  • From the Past, for the Future: Defining Southeast Asian Identity at
           Thailand’s ASEAN Cultural Center

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Parked near an arrangement of plastic chairs and folding tables, a hawker’s cart advertises its offering of ‘ASEAN street food’. But rather than being parked on a roadside to tempt people with a range of regional treats, this is a display at the ASEAN Cultural Center in Bangkok, Thailand. So, what is the cultural flavour of Southeast Asia' And is this an identity that the people of the region would like to dine out on'The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recognizes that fostering a greater sense of regional identity among its citizens will be important to support its broader integration agenda, which covers political, economic and cultural spheres. ASEAN has adopted a specific goal to achieve ... Read More

  • The Migration of International Academics to Thailand and their Experiences
           of Thai Higher Education

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This study reports on exploratory research on migrants working in higher education in Thailand, a population that has been less studied than other groups of migrants in that country. The focus is on what led academics to choose Thailand and on their perceptions and experiences in Thai universities. Our intention is to achieve a better understanding of the challenges of, and potential for, increased international recruitment and enhancement of the teaching and learning experience in Thai higher education. We hope to provide a springboard to explore the parameters that Thailand should further investigate to enhance the quality of inbound academic mobility and consequently the quality of education provided by ... • Obtaining the Nha Heun “Culture” from the King: Considering a Sacred

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Since 1995, I have been visiting ethnic Heuny (Nha Heun)1 villages in Paksong District, Champasak Province, on the Bolaven Plateau for research (Roberts and Baird 1995, pp. 219–62; Baird 2013, pp. 241–63; Green and Baird 2016, pp. 853–73; Baird 2020, pp. 1–21). However, I only became aware of the sacred palm-leaf manuscripts of the Nha Heun in 2014, when an American who had been an International Voluntary Service (IVS) volunteer in 1969 and a US Agency for International Development (USAID) Community Development Advisor between 1970 and May 1971, William (Bill) Sage, approached me. He later provided seventy-eight photographs he had taken of a particular set of palm-leaf manuscripts he had come across when he was ... Read More

  • Social Memory and Philippine Electoral Politics: Contests of Masa

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Despite his unusual style and the tremendous criticism that followed, Rodrigo Roa Duterte remains popular and unchanged in his politics. In the recent Philippine election for local representatives (13 May 2019), nine out of twelve senators were allies of the Duterte administration (Ranada 2019a). In addition, the political power held by Duterte’s family remains dominant in Davao City (Ranada 2019b). How do we explain his continued popularity' Commentators have called Duterte’s presidency and his political style—(neo and new) populist leadership—‘Duterterismo’ (David 2016), a politics that is driven by paranoia (Vitug 2017), and the resurgence of nationalism (Teehankee 2016b) underpinned by ‘grievance politics’ ... • On Improvisational Islam: Indonesian Youth in a Time of Possibility by Nur
           Amali Ibrahim (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In describing current trends in Indonesian Islam, I usually present the five latest developments: (1) post-secular Islam, (2) hybrid Islam, (3) internet Islam, (4) Salafism, and (5) Islamic populism. Among these developments, for the second and third categories, I take advantage of Nur Amali Ibrahim’s explanation in his current study on Indonesian Islam as described in this book. Although these five developments may be understood as independent phenomena, they are fundamentally interrelated. And in the context of understanding contemporary Indonesian Muslim society, Nur Amali’s work is an important contribution, as it lays down a fundamental sociological analysis; namely, the interplay of social and political ... Abstract: Animal history has come of age over the last decade or so (Specht 2016). But in the historiography on Southeast Asia, animal history might be said to have already been a well-established sub-field prior to this, particularly through the work of Greg Bankoff (2004; Bankoff and Swart 2007), Peter Boomgaard (2008) and William Clarence-Smith (2004). Timothy Barnard’s lively contribution to this field itself builds on a swath of recent studies of Singapore’s ecological history, a field that he has played a leading role in fostering (Chee 2011; Barnard 2014; Tan 2015; Barnard 2016; Powell 2016). The broader field of animal history is a dynamic and diverse one, much of it animated by involved, philosophically informed ... Read More

  • Asian Place, Filipino Nation: A Global Intellectual History of the
Philippine Revolution, 1887–1912 by Nicole CuUnjieng Aboitiz (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Nicole CuUnjieng Aboitiz’s book examines the intellectual origins and key concepts of the Philippine Revolution, centring them within the vibrant transnational political contexts of Southeast and East Asia. Aboitiz’s account is an innovative break from prior scholarship on the Revolution, which situated the upheaval in the Philippines at the turn of the century within a national context and along the axis of East-West relations. By situating the anti-colonial ideas of the Filipino revolutionary leaders in the broader transnational context of pan-Asianism, Aboitiz recovers the Philippines as an Asian place from which it has been largely historiographically excluded for over a century.Asian Place, Filipino Nation ... • Censorship in Colonial Indonesia, 1901–1942 by Nobuto Yamamoto
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This book describes the methods used by the colonial government to censor the press during the last decades of Dutch rule in Indonesia. As Yamamoto shows, colonial officials were concerned that newspapers, above all vernacular newspapers, could be used to foment opposition to foreign rule and undermine the calm, orderly society that the Dutch prided themselves on maintaining. This was plainly a danger with the nationalist and communist press that emerged in the 1910s and 1920s. Dutch officials were also wary of the political content of Islamic newspapers and the Chinese press in Indonesia. In the 1930s, a new source of anxiety emerged, as officials fretted that the hostility towards Japan expressed in Chinese ... Read More

  • Moments of Silence: The Unforgetting of the October 6, 1976, Massacre in
           Bangkok by Thongchai Winichakul (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Long before I knew anything about Thailand or the horrific violence perpetrated by right-wing thugs and state actors against Thammasat University students in Bangkok on 6 October 1976, I had been aware of the photo of the Chair Guy from an unlikely source: American youth culture of the 1980s. The iconic image shows a rightist criminal using a folding chair to batter the lifeless body of a student swinging from a tree while a gleeful crowd of boys and men cheered him on. The photo adorned the cover of the 1980 EP Holiday in Cambodia by the California hardcore punk band the Dead Kennedys. I loved the angry music but hated the cover image. To this day, the perpetrator and the victim captured in Neal Ulevich’s ... Read More

  • Traces of Trauma: Cambodian Visual Culture and National Identity in the
Aftermath of Genocide by Boreth Ly (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This remarkable book takes an arts-based approach to the question of “how a morally shattered [Cambodian] culture and nation [found] ways to go on living after the civil war, the US bombing and the Khmer Rouge genocide” (p. 7). It advances original arguments about the embodied nature of trauma—the broken body—in Cambodia (Chapter 1), the cultural trope of scars and scarification (Chapter 2), and how the myth of Neang Neak the serpent princess might be recognized and understood anew (Chapter 5). Ly introduces recent and contemporary artists from Cambodia and the Cambodian diaspora and presents fascinating, emotionally charged analyses of their works, for which many colour plates are provided. The book also ... Read More

  • Fifty Years in the Karen Revolution in Burma: The Soldier and the Teacher
by Saw Ralph and Naw Sheera (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Fifty Years is a rare and gut-wrenching first-hand account of the long trajectory of Karen struggle at Burma’s (Myanmar) peripheries. Riddled with tales of hardship, death, suffering and sacrifice, the book tells the life histories of Saw Ralph, a former brigadier general in the rebel Karen National Union (KNU), and his wife, Naw Sheera, the former general secretary of the Karen Women’s Organisation (KWO). The book is narrated in the first person and collated by editor Stephanie Olinga-Shannon, with Martin Smith’s introduction situating the KNU leadership within the different conundrums it faced: between alliances, ceasefires and conflict.Divided into two parts, following each of the two protagonists, the book ... • Towards a New Malaysia' The 2018 Election and Its Aftermath ed. by
Meredith L. Weiss and Faisal S. Hazis (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Malaysian politics, particularly under the Barisan Nasional regime, often attracts the attention of observers. With the state’s spectacular economic performance, especially from the 1980s to the mid-1990s, many observers were baffled by the overarching dominance of Barisan Nasional despite the rapid growth in the middle-class, increasing urbanization and industrialization, and the incremental curtailment of fundamental freedoms. In fact, for Malaysia during those decades, economic progress was one of the foundations that sustained the regime rather than threatened it. Hence, Malaysian society is seen to prioritize economic interests over political freedom. This phenomenon, however, which is sometimes regarded as ... Read More

  • Everyday Justice in Myanmar: Informal Resolutions and State Evasion in a
Time of Contested Transition ed. by Helene Maria Kyed (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This collaborative collection edited by Helene Maria Kyed makes an important and timely contribution to discussions about Myanmar’s changing legal and political landscape. Everyday Justice in Myanmar foregrounds the perspectives and experiences of local communities in accessing and practising justice, effectively highlighting the diversity of politico-legal orders in Myanmar, a country that recently experienced a decade of semi-democratic change amidst long periods of military rule. Indeed, while patterns of exclusion and repression reminiscent of the military past were still present in Myanmar, the fact that the research for this book could take place at all is remarkable in view of the decades of isolation that ... • The Potentials of Fieldwork in a Pandemic: Navigating Shifting Landscapes
           of the Indonesian Fishery Industry

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On Saturday, 14 March 2020, I woke up in a hotel room in Makassar, the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Two days prior, I had travelled to the city as part of a school field trip from Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Perikanan (SMKP),1 a fishery vocational boarding high school in the district of Bone, South Sulawesi, where I was living and conducting ethnographic fieldwork. As a school whose aim is to prepare a “new generation of world-class fishers” (Pusat Pendidikan Kelautan dan Perikanan 2015), SMKP had sent a group of its students to Makassar to a navy training event with me and two other adult chaperones. That morning, I woke to an inbox brimming with new emails, including one that was flagged as ... Read More

  • Paper, Pen and Today’s Communication Platforms: Remote Disaster
           Research during a Pandemic

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This note reflects on how measures to face the pandemic have affected how we conduct fieldwork. In my case, COVID-19 arrived just as I began my doctoral project on how mobilities are shaped in post-disaster Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, which was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami in September 2018. Studying the disaster and its aftermath as a focusing event (Birkland and Warnement 2014, p. 60), I had planned to identify pre-existing social vulnerabilities and look at how these relate to the articulation of power asymmetries. In order to understand how social, political, economic, environmental and cultural interactions give shape to what we call a disaster, I planned to use archival sources on population ... Read More
