  • José M. Regueiro (1939–2017)
    • Abstract: José Miguel Regueiro, an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Pennsylvania, passed away on the evening of Sunday, January 22, 2017 after a long battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.Image courtesy of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, University of Pennsylvania.José was affiliated with the university and with our department for 47 years: first as a graduate student, then as an instructor, and from 1972 onwards, as a member of the standing faculty in Romance Languages; following the division of the Romance Languages Department, he was a standing faculty member in Spanish and Portuguese. At the time of his retirement in December 2014, he was Associate Professor of Spanish.José ... Read More

  • Donald L. Shaw (1930–2017)
    • Abstract: Image courtesy of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Virginia. The passing of renowned Hispanist Donald L. Shaw on January 30, 2017 merits a moment to look back at the arc of Spanish American literary criticism, as its growth throughout the second half of the twentieth century rebalanced the scales in terms of Peninsular and Spanish American studies. When Mr. Shaw (a professor at the University of Virginia, where all faculty are referred to as Mr. or Ms.) began his professional career in the 1950s, many Spanish programs at US and British universities, as well as journals and conferences, were primarily oriented towards Spain. Mr. Shaw's own description of his early academic positions (1959–1961) ... Read More

  • Colonial Commodity or Numinous Realm' The Representation of Nature in
the Poetry of Luis Palés Matos
    • Abstract: Luis Palés Matos's Tuntún de pasa y grifería (1937; 2nd ed. 1950) remains one of the foundational texts of Afro-Caribbean poetry in Spanish, even as his poems have been the site of conflictive readings for decades. In the 1930s and 40s, his work generated resistance among a Hispanophile Puerto Rican intellectual elite, including critics and fellow poets like Margot Arce de Vázquez and José I. de Diego Padró, that often rejected the notion that these poems constituted "authentic" Puerto Rican poetry, yet also celebrated their aesthetic achievement. In the 1960s and 70s, more progressive critics like Manuel Maldonado Denis and Isabelo Zenón Cruz objected to Palés's often stereotypical representation of blacks in the ... Read More

  • Wagner and Schoenberg in the New World: The Legacy of German Musical
           Romanticism in Los pasos perdidos
    • Abstract: In an interview from 1980, Cuban writer and musicologist Alejo Carpentier revealed his plan to write a novel about Richard Wagner's imaginary visit to the New World. According to him, "sería una historia de Wagner en Río de Janeiro, donde compone exactamente lo mismo que hizo en Europa, porque el genio es el mismo, se esté donde se esté" (Entrevistas 481). Although he died in 1980 and this novel never came to fruition, the idea of writing it attests to his prolonged reflections on Latin America's connection to Wagner. Using this unrealized project as a starting point, in this article I retrace Wagner's position and legacy in the genealogy of Carpentier's third novel Los pasos perdidos (1953). According to critic ... Read More

  • The Political Becomes the Personal: Rosario Castellanos and the US Women's
           Liberation Movement
Juan Ventura's diagnosis of Rosario Castellanos (1925–1974) in the epigraph of this essay is founded on the belief that a true feminist must practice what she preaches. Ventura finds that Cartas a Ricardo—a collection of letters written between 1950 and 1967 by the Mexican author to her lifelong lover, Ricardo Guerra—reveals incongruences between her personal and political selves, contradicting the political image she projected as a champion against sexism. With the definitive and reductive conclusion that the Mexican ... Read More

    • Abstract: What conventional historians call the context is already in the text in the specific modalities of code switching. Read More

  • "Lector Ludens": The Representation of Games and Play in Cervante by
           Michael Scham (review)
Read More

Unamuno by Luis Álvarez Castro (review)
Read More

  • El Eternauta, Daytripper, and Beyond by David William Foster (review)
    • Abstract: Graphic narratives have become a staple of US academe, mostly as an acknowledgement of millennial sensibility, in which imagery is valued as highly as—and occasionally, even more than—lettered prejudice. Within the field of Latin American cultural studies, David William Foster represents a veteran voice espousing graphic narratives as cultural products of merit. Back in 1989, he published From Mafalda to Los Supermachos, one of the very first texts dealing with Latin American comics in a scholarly manner—as humor, since that is how their study was justified back then. In a way, this book is a followup, though it focuses exclusively on Argentina and Brazil. The text is divided into two sections, each one discussing ... Read More

           Hispanoamérica by Sergio Franco (review)
Read More

  • Spanish Film Cultures: The Making and Unmaking of Spanish Cinema by Nuria
           Triana-Toribio (review)
    • Abstract: It is perhaps a measure of the new maturity of the discipline of Anglophone Spanish film studies that scholars should now venture beyond close readings of films and auteurist studies, both of which are accessible extensions of the literary criticism in which the great majority of specialists in the UK and USA were trained. Addressing the institutional questions of industry and government policy (and, indeed, the relationship between the two) requires a more painstaking apprenticeship in media and area studies. It is thus to Nuria Triana-Toribio's great credit that she devotes a whole monograph to this hitherto neglected area. And she builds here on the considerable body of pioneering work she has already published: ... Read More

  • Nicaragua and the Politics of Utopia: Development and Culture in the
Modern State by Daniel Chávez (review)
    • Abstract: The quest for the ideal society has preoccupied philosophers, leaders, and artists for centuries. Five hundred years after the publication of Sir Thomas More's Utopia, utopian discourse remains as salient as ever, as societies struggle to reinvent themselves within the context of domestic and geopolitical change. In Nicaragua and the Politics of Utopia David Chávez, Assistant Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of New Hampshire, investigates how Nicara-guan society reinvented itself at key junctures in history through the construction of narratives produced by the interactions between popular culture and political regime. Chávez's study utilizes significant archival research and draws ... Read More
