  • Cuba in Hemingway
    • Abstract: "You have expat writers. They are not American. They are something else. And I won't say something in between because that would encourage unnecessary and inaccurate dualities.""They are able to inhabit two worlds simultaneously … human communities, in other words, are becoming at least partially detachable from geography.""Where 'we' end and 'they' begin is at least partially detached from geography. The category of 'we' is widened. Or—perhaps the crucial point—it keeps jumping about."Just before Hemingway donated the Nobel Prize to Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre: "Everyone stood up. When the hymn ended, the speaker said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, you just heard the Cuban National Anthem.' At one of the ... Read More

  • Robert Jordan's (and Ernest Hemingway's) "True Book": Myths and Moral
Quandaries in For Whom the Bell Tolls
    • Abstract: Several times in Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, the protagonist Robert Jordan thinks about the "true book" he will write after the Spanish Civil War (SCW) ends. For example: "And what are you going to do afterwards? I am going back [to the University of Montana] and earn my living teaching Spanish as before, and I am going to write a true book" (178). He cannot write the book in the fictional present, of course, caught up as he is in the war as a partizan for the Spanish Loyalists operating behind enemy lines. But after the war ends, when he is presumably free to write whatever he wants, and when his revelations will not affect the war's outcome, then Jordan can write his "true book."Why this emphasis on ... • Louis Fischer as "Mitchell" in For Whom the Bell Tolls
    • Abstract: In Chapter 18 of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan recalls encountering "a certain British economist" (239) during the defense of Madrid in November 1936, specifically "on the afternoon when they had attacked at Carabanchel" (239). At Gaylord's, the Russian hotel and watering-hole in Madrid, Hemingway's barely fictionalized version of the Soviet journalist and Stalinist agent Mikhail Koltsov—"Karkov" in the novel—names the man "Mitchell." The details and tone of Mitchell's characterization suggest that Hemingway based him on an actual person, and the correspondence with Maxwell Perkins and Charles Scribner confirms as much. Perkins worried that the typescript's description of this "'certain American ... Read More

  • The Scapegoat's Scapegoat: A Girardian Reading of Across the River and
           into the Trees
    • Abstract: The most notorious instance of scapegoating in Hemingway's work is the vilification of Robert Cohn in The Sun Also Rises; however, a less noted, but more layered and similarly important instance of scapegoating occurs in Across the River and into the Trees. Colonel Richard Cantwell is a scapegoat for the military, arbitrarily blamed and demoted for the disastrous loss of his battalion. His position as a scapegoat infects his treatment of other characters, which is most clearly seen in his desire for exclusivity in his relationship with Renata and "the Order," and his abusive treatment of outsiders. This pattern and its implied connection to his scapegoating by the military allow Cantwell and readers to recognize ... Read More

  • Pastoral as Commodity: Brautigan's Reinscription of Hemingway's Trout
           Fishing
    • Abstract: Both Ernest Hemingway's "Big Two-Hearted River" (1925) and Richard Brautigan's Trout Fishing in America (1967) make excursions into the domain of trout fishing. As scholars such as William Hjortsberg, Thomas Hearron, and William L. Stull have pointed out, Brautigan was strongly influenced by Hemingway's works, and the shadow of Hemingway is most evident in Trout Fishing in America.1 The narrator mentions Hemingway's death in connection with his farewell to an enigmatic character named "Trout Fishing in America," thus inviting readers to consider how Brautigan references and adapts Hemingway's portrayal of trout fishing in "Big Two-Hearted River." Brautigan's approach to the human relationship with nature as it is ... Read More

    • Abstract: Any scholar of twentieth-century art, letters, and history; existentialism and the (post)modern; travel and travel writing; and migrant aesthetics and the shaping effects of place on the individual will be drawn to Ernest Hemingway like a moth to a streetlamp. The publication of his correspondence, unedited and unabridged, traces some monumental events in his life and American Letters: a 100-day separation from Pauline Pfeiffer (and eventual divorce of Hadley Richardson), the publication of The Sun Also Rises, the decision to leave Paris (and to eventually move back), the composition and revision of A Farewell to Arms and Men without Women, the birth of his second child, his father's suicide, first impressions of ... • Ernest Hemingway by Verna Kale (review)
    • Abstract: Approaching the twenty-fifth anniversary of James R. Mellow's Hemingway: A Life Without Consequences, we are entering a new age of Hemingway biography. Mellow's was the last stand-alone volume in that revisionary wave of 1980s' biographies that included sometimes controversial takes on Hemingway's life by Scott Donaldson (1978), Jeffrey Meyers (1982), Bernice Kert (1984), Peter A. Griffin (1985), and Kenneth Lynn (1985). By the time the late Michael S. Reynolds completed the final entry in his multivolume series in 1999—some thirteen years after his first installment—the well on new insights felt as if it had run dry. No matter that the Ernest Hemingway of the 1980s and 1990s was a thoroughly different creature ... Read More

  • Reading Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees by Mark Cirino
           (review)
    • Abstract: When Mark Cirino began writing his Glossary and Commentary for Across the River and into the Trees, he faced a challenge vastly different from the one H. R. Stoneback encountered when he began the same endeavor on The Sun Also Rises. Stoneback would be dealing with a novel consistently ranked among the masterpieces of twentieth-century American literature, the novel critics regularly judge Hemingway's greatest. What better way to inaugurate the Reading Hemingway series than by selecting the first novel of the young genius who by age twenty-five had learned to write short stories of immense skill? For half a century and more, The Sun Also Rises has been regularly taught in the nation's colleges, and the world thinks ... Read More

  • Teaching Hemingway and Modernism ed. by Joseph Fruscione (review)
    • Abstract: As part of the "Teaching Hemingway" series, Joseph Fruscione's essay collection Teaching Hemingway and Modernism follows Lisa Tyler's Teaching Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Peter L. Hays's Teaching Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises (2008) and precedes Alex Vernon's Teaching Hemingway and War (2016), Verna Kale's Teaching Hemingway and Gender (2016) and Kevin Maier's soon-to-be-published Teaching Hemingway and the Natural World (2017). In the forward to Fruscione's volume, Mark P. Ott notes the rationale for shifting away from specific novels and toward broader concepts: "To promote their usefulness to instructors and professors—from high schools, community colleges, and universities—the newest volumes in this ... • Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg (review)
    • Abstract: This is one of the finest works about the publishing industry. In fact, it stands alone at the top of the mountain in this category for a number of reasons, including A. Scott Berg's passion for the subject matter, his brilliant reportage skills, and the fact that he had access to primary sources, original author letters, and the Malcolm Cowley article about Perkins—"Unshaken Friend"—that appeared in The New Yorker. To buttress my assertion, Max Perkins: Editor of Genius won the 1980 National Book Award when Berg was only thirty-one years old. The book swells with facts and anecdotes about how Maxwell Evarts Perkins navigated the roadways and roadblocks of the New York City publishing world in the early ... Read More

  • The Hemingway Heist by Wm. Jon McCormick, and: Hemingway's Heist by Chuck
           Ball (review)
    • Abstract: In the chameleonic realm of fiction where writers for various reasons appropriate Ernest Hemingway as a character, either directly or indirectly, a fair number of titles may be said to have established a sort of cachet: John Dos Passos's Chosen Country, Leonardo Padura Fuentes's Adiós, Hemingway, Kirk Curnutt's Coffee with Hemingway, Joe Haldeman's The Hemingway Hoax, Gerhard Köpf's Hemingway's Suitcase, Paula McLain's The Paris Wife, Michael Palin's Hemingway's Chair, Dan Simmons's The Crook Factory, Clancy Carlile's The Paris Pilgrims, and William McCranor Henderson's I Killed Hemingway, to name ten. The publishers range from Houghton Mifflin and Simon & Schuster to Picador and St. Martin's.And then there's the ... Read More

  • Current Bibliography
    • Abstract: [The current bibliography aspires to include all serious contributions to Hemingway scholarship. Given the substantial quantity of significant critical work appearing on Hemingway's life and writings annually, inconsequential items from the popular press have been omitted to facilitate the distinction of important developments and trends in the field. Annotations for articles appearing in The Hemingway Review have been omitted due to the immediate availability of abstracts introducing each issue. Kelli Larson welcomes your assistance in keeping this feature current. Please send reprints, clippings, and photocopies of articles, as well as notices of new books, directly to Larson at the University of St. Thomas, 333 ... Read More
