  • PEN/Hemingway Keynote Address Delivered at the John F. Kennedy Library 2
           April 2017
    • Abstract: Thank you for that wonderful introduction, and I can't say how proud I am and honored I feel to be part of a celebration like this. To those of you in the room who are writers, we all know how important it is to feel that the world hears us.So thank you, PEN New England, and thank you to the Hemingway Foundation, and to the JFK Library. All of you are tremendously important in the lives of writers.Writers work in solitude and silence, so response is essential to us. If you drop a stone into the well, and if you lean over to listen, and if you never hear a splash, you will never know if you what you sent into the world had any weight at all. This is why encouragement is so crucial, and why what PEN New England does ... Read More

  • Hemingway's Requiem for Battle Fields: "Atomic Jokes" after
Hiroshima/Nagasaki in Across the River and into the Trees
    • Abstract: In a letter on 1 September 1945 to Mary Welsh, his would-be fourth wife, who was staying in Normandy, Ernest Hemingway writes, "Normandy is dairy products and cider. Cider, of course, is 90 percent of all the alcohol that makes all the aperitifs. But we never drank them anyway. Just as long as the atomic bomb doesn't wipe out the Juniper berry you'll be o.k." (SL 597; emphasis added). A similar attitude toward atomic bombs can be seen in a letter sent to Lillian Ross in 1951:By the time I get it [the draft of The Old Man and the Sea (1952)] all right and as good as I can do they will probably be dropping atomic bombs around like goat shit. But we can make a trip to some comparatively unbombed area and you can read ... Read More

  • "How the Weather Was": Anthropogenic Climate Change and Environmental
Damage in Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa
    • Abstract: During the 1930s, the heyday of literary modernism, the American Great Plains experienced a severe, multi-year drought unprecedented in recorded history. Crops failed, and in the absence of adequate ground cover, the wind blew the soil away, ruining additional land and causing more widespread crop failure. Twenty-two dust storms blackened the skies of the Great Plains in 1934 alone (Lookingbill 22). A dust storm in the spring of 1934 was particularly devastating: "Drought conditions became worse, and in May the wind stripped the soil to the depth of the plow in parts of the Great Plains, removed approximately 300 million tons of soil, and deposited it over the eastern half of the nation including Washington, D.C. ... • Wise Blood: Menstruation, Fertility, and the "Disappointment" in
Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees
    • Abstract: "A man does not know about what a woman suffers in menstruation since all women are different in this and suffering and conduct is very variable."In Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises (1926), Jake Barnes's physical incapacity to consummate his love for Brett Ashley has generated reams of exegesis by nearly a century of critics, even including a rare, detailed explanation by Hemingway himself.1 Jake's sexual impotence has been imputed to represent the spiritual impotence of the Lost Generation, with scholars finding profound symbolic significance in the wound.2 Critics also lauded the injury as a quintessential example of Hemingway's iceberg principle of writing, in which omitted or suggested material lends power by its ... • Breaking Forelegs: Hemingway's Early Prefaces
    • Abstract: "It is all skinning dead horses to me."Ernest Hemingway's work exists in concert with his vast public authority. More so than most writers of his time, Hemingway showed remarkable public staying power. He consistently promoted a persona of strength, regularly commented on the business of literature, and took aim at literary critics when necessary in his fiction, public letters, essays, and prefaces. These motifs run through nearly every public piece he ever wrote, but in his earliest prefaces (both published and unpublished) Hemingway struggled to find his footing within the genre. He was an apprentice to the trade, rather than the fully formed and confident arbiter of writing and writers he would become. More ... Read More

  • "Dear Mr. Hemingway": Modernism, the Market, and the Fan Mail Reception of
           A Farewell to Arms
    • Abstract: On 10 December 1929, a fan wrote to thank Ernest Hemingway for his most recently published novel:Dear Mr. Hemingway,I don't know you personally, and you don't know me at all. But I've felt the power of 'A Farewell to Arms' so deeply that, though I don't share your innate pessimism, I feel like sending you this line of admiration and thanks.Yours sincerely,Hamilton Fish Armstrong(JFK)1Dear Mr. Hemingway,I don't know you personally, and you don't know me at all. • Hemingway's "Now I Lay Me," Prayer, and The Fisher King
    • Abstract: "Now I Lay Me" has gotten a fair degree of attention from critics, particularly in light of Nick Adams's description of his parents and their relationship, and what it might reveal about Hemingway's own relationship to his parents and his own psyche. Critics thus engaged have been Paul Smith, Joe Flora, Richard Hovey, and Gerry Brenner, among others. That is to say, the criticism has been primarily psychological or even psychiatric, neglecting literary allusions. After Malcolm Cowley's 1943 revelation that Hemingway had used the same mythic materials that T.S. Eliot had in The Waste Land to create a Fisher King motif in the Sun Also Rises,1 seconded by Carlos Baker in 1952 (90), critics have found referential ... Read More

  • Ernest Hemingway: A Biography by Mary V. Dearborn (review)
    • Abstract: Mary V. Dearborn's new book represents the most thorough and authoritative one-volume biography of Hemingway since Carlos Baker's magisterial Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story in 1969. At 752 pages in bound galleys, with an index to come, it runs even longer than Baker, and for good reason. A great deal of new material has surfaced during the past half century to be taken into account, and Dearborn has been diligent both in reading what other biographers and critics have contributed and in uncovering fresh information. She is an accomplished biographer whose subjects have included Henry Miller, Louise Bryant, Norman Mailer, and Peggy Guggenheim. But her last book, on Guggenheim, was published in 2002 and, as her ... Read More

  • Ernest Hemingway: A New Life by James M. Hutchisson (review)
    • Abstract: As Kirk Curnutt noted in the Spring 2017 issue of The Hemingway Review, there's no shortage of Hemingway biographies. From the epic and magisterial (Baker's Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story, 1969, and of course Reynolds's five volume biography), to the focused (Hendrickson's Hemingway's Boat, 2012, Blume's Everybody Behaves Badly, 2016), to the brief (Kale's Ernest Hemingway for the Critical Lives series of Reaktion Books, 2016), life stories and biographical studies of the twentieth century's most famous author continue to populate the field like dandelions. The first question asked of any new biography, then, in this rich landscape of competing and at times contradictory books, is: What does any particular work ... Read More

  • Hemingway's Brain by Andrew Farah (review)
    • Abstract: Hemingway studies has waited a long time for the right physician to take an interest in the tragic central problem of Hemingway's life—his progressive mental unraveling, begun early and accelerating in the 1950s, and his final descent into severe depression and psychosis, culminating in one of the most famous suicides of the twentieth century. At last, the doctor is in. Andrew Farah is a Neuropsychiatrist, Chief of Psychiatry at the High Point Division of the University of North Carolina Healthcare System, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His arrival is timely. Neuroscience, bolstered by technologies such as the PET scan, which uses radioactive tracers to show problems at the ... Read More

  • Hemingway at War: Ernest Hemingway's Adventures as a World War II
           Correspondent by Terry Mort (review)
    • Abstract: Hemingway's war experiences have always been something of a Rorschach Test, where the commentator's own perspective emerges from Hemingway's personality: Hemingway was a born warrior with a preternatural understanding of military strategy and terrain; Hemingway was an overcompensating juvenile playing around with guns; Hemingway never got over being rejected from the military as a teenager; Hemingway was a braggart and a poseur who was seeking glory; Hemingway courted death; Hemingway needed an excuse to drink with his friends; Hemingway's frustration at writing an epic novel was sublimated in his… and so on.Someday, someone with all the evidence might be able to reconcile convincingly all of these perspectives to ... • Teaching Hemingway and Gender ed. by Verna Kale (review)
    • Abstract: Teaching Hemingway and Gender, the latest title in the Teaching Hemingway series from Kent State University Press, gives the impression that the Bad Old Days may have passed, but they are not far behind us. Editor Verna Kale writes in her introduction: "Our job now as feminist critics (and at this point we are all, I hope, feminist critics) is to be aware of how the gaze—Hemingway's and our own—assumes … a host of subject positions," as well as "how considerations of gender and sexuality in Hemingway's work might revise our understandings not only of Hemingway but of modernism, authorship, the literary marketplace, popular culture, gender theory, queer theory, men's studies, and other modes of inquiry" (3). Kale ... Read More

  • Current Bibliography
    • Abstract: [The current bibliography aspires to include all serious contributions to Hemingway scholarship. Given the substantial quantity of significant critical work appearing on Hemingway's life and writings annually, inconsequential items from the popular press have been omitted to facilitate the distinction of important developments and trends in the field. Annotations for articles appearing in The Hemingway Review have been omitted due to the immediate availability of abstracts introducing each issue. Kelli Larson welcomes your assistance in keeping this feature current. Please send reprints, clippings, and photocopies of articles, as well as notices of new books, directly to Larson at the University of St. Thomas, 333 ... Read More
