  • Introduction: Homefront Frontlines and Transnational Geometries of Empire
           and Resistance
    • Abstract: What changes when we think about homefronts transnationally? What structures of power and resistance emerge? Coined in England during World War I, the term “homefront” ties domesticity to militarism while constructing an imagined barrier between the life-threatening space of combat and the geographical foundation “at home” of the state waging war. On the one hand, homelands are spaces away from conflict, and thus of safety. On the other hand, the discursive militarizing of such spaces by making them a “front” enlists all civilians in the war effort. Frontline, the linguistic partner of homefront, produces a separation of violent conflict from spaces of civilian life and harkens back to ... Read More

  • Serving on the Eugenic Homefront: Virginia Woolf, Race, and Disability
    • Abstract: In her 1926 essay On Being Ill, Virginia Woolf construes her experience of illness as a refusal to serve on the battlefield of eugenics. “In illness . . . we cease to be soldiers in the army of the upright,” she states, and instead “we become deserters” (2002, 12). Her use of the term “upright” has direct eugenic connotations, and suggests that there is a war being waged at home against the unfit. But in Woolf’s figuration, the infirm are not merely unfit for service in the war against degeneracy, nor are they the enemy. Instead, they choose to abandon the frontlines and blur the battle lines between fit and unfit. Rather than being purely marked by deficiency, in Woolf’s formulation, the sick gain abilities ... • Turkish Mother Citizens and Their Homefront Duties: The Cold War Discourse
           of the Türk Kadını Magazine
    • Abstract: In this article,1 I argue for a particular Cold War view of the Turkish woman as a Mother Citizen. This term refers to a conceptualization of the Turkish woman as both a guardian of family values and a protector of the republic. The Mother Citizen is a possessor of civic rights and duties that are justified with reference to her capacities for motherhood as well as for citizenship. These two functions are interrelated in the sense that the Mother Citizen is assigned a responsibility for the protection of the republic as a mother (or at least as a prospective mother) and because she is a (prospective) mother. Elements of traditional and religious family values are combined with modernist and egalitarian ideals of ... Read More

  • Re-membering Iraqis in Nuha al-Radi’s Baghdad Diaries: A Woman’s
           Chronicle of War and Exile
    • Abstract: Baghdad Diaries recounts the horrific consequences of the first Gulf War and the embargo imposed on Iraq that started in 1991 and drastically affected the daily lives of Iraqis, especially women. The diaries cover a time span between 1991 and 2003. In 1991, the first Gulf War was launched by coalition forces, primarily led by the United States and the UK, against Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait.1 During the 1990s, economic sanctions were imposed on Iraq by the UN and lasted until 2003. In 2003, another US-led war, commonly known as the Iraq War, was launched against Iraq due to alleged ties to terrorism and possession of weapons of mass destruction.2 Throughout the diaries, al-Radi portrays the multiple ... • American Sniper and American Wife: Domestic Biopolitics at Necropolitical
           War
    • Abstract: “To me, the home I was in was just another part of the battlefield. The apartments and everything in them were just things to be used to accomplish our goal.” In November 2004, Navy SEAL Chris Kyle participated in the so-called second battle for Fallujah of the US-led war in Iraq,1 considered “the fiercest during the Iraq War and the deadliest urban combat for the Marines since Vietnam” (Murphy 2014). US and British armed forces violently transformed the homes and neighborhoods of Iraqi civilians into a war zone. In his memoir, American Sniper (2012), Kyle describes using a baby’s crib to construct a platform for his sniper rifle: I was going to be shooting out of the windows, so I needed to be ... Read More

    • Abstract: The United States (US) federal government and the United States Department of Defense (DOD) accentuate the colonial and gendered narrative that the residents and islands of the Marianas Archipelago are in need of governance and guardianship by the United States through aggressive notions of militarized security. This gendered protector/protected approach denies political self-determination and is constructed to validate militarization.1 Continued political subordination of the residents and continuous expanding militarization of the islands create an unequally militarized world. The colonial-militarized treatment of the residents and the region is justified in the masculinist ideal of national security. In US ... Read More

  • (Im)possible Futures: Liberal Capitalism, Vietnamese Sniper Women, and
           Queer Asian Possibility
    • Abstract: My father was thinking of ways to skip school when his house was bombed. “It was a woman with a fruit basket trying to kill the group of officers having breakfast downstairs,” he told me. I thought you knew everyone in your village. Who was it? He was too slow to answer. I ran through all of the nameless women in the extraordinary stories he would tell me throughout my childhood. He patiently said no to all of them. “It was too chaotic. The blood, the smoke, broken dishes everywhere. I ran to find my parents. She disappeared before anyone could find her.” After he told me the story of the bomber, I pestered him for days after, at times with unintentional insensitivity. Yeah, but what was she ... Read More

  • After War: The Weight of Life at Walter Reed by Zoë H. Wool (review)
    • Abstract: Zoë Wool’s After War is an ethnographic exploration of the lives of severely injured soldiers in the extra/ordinary space of Fisher House, a communal home for men and their families attached to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. With incredible empathy and attention to her own positionality as a researcher residing and working among wounded soldiers, Wool follows the men and their wives, girlfriends, siblings, and parents as they are faced with extraordinary trials: having amputations and battling bone infections; relearning to walk; or adjusting to new ways of seeing which render everything dangerous and everyone an enemy. Wool also documents the more ordinary routines of these men: eating cereal in the ... Read More

  • Bioinsecurities: Disease Interventions, Empire, and the Government of
           Species by Neel Ahuja (review)
    • Abstract: Neel Ahuja’s Bioinsecurities: Disease Interventions, Empire, and the Government of Species is a timely book. With hyperbolic media representations of the 2014 Ebola outbreak and Zika’s recent link to microcephaly in newborns, it is particularly important to understand the ongoing “racialization of transborder epidemics” (5) in the context of US colonialism, imperialism, and militarism. In Bioinsecurities, Ahuja offers five historical cases that demonstrate how US empire has shaped scientific research, public health policy, and media representations of infectious disease. He shows how the circulation of “racial fears of disease” (5) and the “gothic risk of interspecies contact” (10) have been used during the ... Read More

  • Holidays in the Danger Zone: Entanglements of War and Tourism by Debbie
           Lisle (review)
    • Abstract: What does war have to do with tourism? Holidays in the Danger Zone sets out to offer a way not only to juxtapose these two phenomena, but also to unsettle their seemingly mutual exclusiveness. Lisle makes a convincing argument for the serious theoretical consideration of “soft” cultural practices and institutions of tourism alongside the more traditional subjects of international relations, namely war and conflict. Needless to say, these seemingly opposed areas of study are gendered in formation and practice, and Lisle’s work is thus a simultaneous attempt at bridging and critiquing these fields of studies, their sets of theoretical frameworks, archives and methodologies. Building on a connection theorized ... Read More

  • Ghost Stories for Darwin: The Science of Variation and the Politics of
           Diversity by Banu Subramaniam (review)
    • Abstract: In Ghost Stories for Darwin (2014), Banu Subramaniam invites us to explore critical challenges that lie at the heart of current work in feminist science and technology studies (STS). As she visits ghosts brought forward through the figurations of morning glories, Darwin, eugenics, evolutionary biology, and invasive plants, she raises the crucial question of how to engage and think with the world through what Donna Haraway has named naturecultures (2003). More specifically, Subramaniam poses the productive question: “How does one study a naturecultural world” (6)? In this collaborative review of Ghost Stories, we highlight what we see as five key gestures devised by Subramaniam that can serve as tools to ... Read More
