  • Editor's Foreword
    • Abstract: With this issue of Literature and Medicine, I have the privilege and honor of thanking Catherine Belling, Rita Charon, Anne Hudson Jones, and Maura Spiegel for inviting me to be the journal's next Executive Editor. I will draw from the stellar examples of their past stewardship for guidance. I look forward to working with the Associate Editors and Contributing Editors, whose counsel and wisdom I have already come to rely upon. I am thrilled to announce a new Associate Editor, Lorenzo Servitje, who is an Assistant Professor of Literature and Medicine at Lehigh University. Anna Fenton-Hathaway will continue on as Managing Editor; I cannot imagine embarking on this journey without her wit, patience, and diplomacy. My ... Read More

  • "Founding Its Empire on Spells of Pleasure": Brunonian Excitability, the
Invigorated English Opium-Eater, and De Quincey's "China Question"
    • Abstract: Twenty-one years after the first publication of his notorious Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821), Thomas De Quincey received news that his son Horace had died in China.1 Horace had sailed to China to fight for Britain in the First Opium War (1839–42), a war triggered by China's resistance to opium and the opium trade, later ironically named for the drug itself. Although De Quincey might have warned Horace not to go to China,2 he acted as an avid supporter of an Anglo-Chinese war in his periodical writings. In "The Opium and the China Question," an article published in Blackwood's in June 1840, De Quincey drew a comparison between the British and Chinese empires, describing the war as a competition between ... • Where Similar Cases Are Stated: Medical Case Studies and Provisional
Knowledge in Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland
    • Abstract: Charles Brockden Brown's first published novel, Wieland; or The Transformation: An American Tale (1798), opens with a medical case. After being burned during intense prayer at his private temple, the protagonist Clara Wieland's father is brought into the house. Fever gives way to delirium and he expires. Clara concludes the account with a series of questions: "Was this the penalty of disobedience' this stroke of a vindictive and invisible hand' Is it a fresh proof that the Divine Ruler interferes in human affairs, mediates an end, selects and commissions his agents, and enforces, by unequivocal sanctions, submission to his will' Or, was it merely the irregular expansion of the fluid that imparts warmth to our heart ... • "Harmonies of Form and Color": Race and the Prosthetic Body in Civil War
           America
    • Abstract: In two Army Medical Museum photographs from the late 1860s, a young Civil War veteran displays for viewers both the injury and the ingenuity spawned by war. The images depict David D. Cole, a former Corporal in the New York Second Cavalry who was wounded at the battle of Amelia Court-House, Virginia in April 1865 and had his leg amputated by United States Assistant Surgeon George M. McGill in August of that year. In photograph 1300, a seated Cole bares for viewers the stump of his left leg (see fig. 1.1). His hand rests on an artificial limb, which reaches nearly to the height of his chest. The young veteran leans back slightly in his chair, away from the camera, as his hat veers downward and casts a shadow over ... Read More

  • "Soldiering On": Social Media Representations of Infertility and Assisted
           Reproduction as Patient Narratives
    • Abstract: In 2016, London's Young Vic Theatre staged an update of Federico García Lorca's 1934 play Yerma, a story of a childless woman whose desperation to become pregnant drives her to insanity over the course of the play. Australian director Simon Stone changed the setting from rural Spain to contemporary Great Britain, garnering acclaim in the mainstream British press. Several reviewers singled out for praise Billie Piper's performance as the unnamed lead, referenced only as "Her."1 Stone's updates to the play included central placement of two twenty-first-century technologies: "She" undergoes twelve rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) in her quest to become a mother, and she maintains a blog where she records her ... • Clinical Empathy and the Ethics of "Detached Concern" in
           Mid-TwentiethCentury British Literature
    • Abstract: Empathy is increasingly understood to be a crucial aspect of effective medical care because: (i) it establishes trust between doctors and patients that can result in faster, more accurate diagnoses; (ii) it promotes healing; (iii) it encourages patients to adhere to their treatment regimes. Nevertheless, the dominant view amongst medical practitioners throughout the second half of the twentieth century has been that emotional engagement with patients should be avoided. Critics of empathy in health care claim that: (i) emotions interfere with cognitive assessment and objective judgement; (ii) that emotional responses make it difficult for surgeons to perform procedures; (iii) that daily exposure to the pain and ... • Abstract: In the midst of the 2014 West African Ebola crisis, an image titled "Ebola Zombie" appeared on the Internet, and quickly, appropriately, went viral. Accompanying reports stated that, "for the first time in human history, confirmed footage of a man who scientists watched die from Ebola then only several hours later, regain life and rise from the dead" [sic].1 The slightly blurry image portrayed the face of a man with brown, disease-pocked skin, dreadlocks, and bloodshot, translucent eyes (Fig. 1). While the picture circulated for several days before being identified by a blogger as an altered still shot from the 2013 zombie horror flick World War Z (Fig. 2), the related story remained harder to disprove.2"Ebola ... • Diagnosis Race: Troubling Etiologies in Claudia Rankine's American Lyrics
    • Abstract: The way the body slows down what's going down helps to clarify the relation of living on to ongoing crisis and loss.Claudia Rankine's Don't Let Me Be Lonely: An American Lyric (2004) and Citizen: An American Lyric (2014) both focus on Black pain—which is to say, the psychological and the physiological costs of moving through a society in which, at any given moment, you may be unseen/invisible, or mis-seen as an imminent physical threat, or viewed as a spectacle of abjection. In both Citizen and Lonely, we see racism do its pernicious work in many forms: through overt acts of racialized terror, through dehumanizing media representations of Black bodies, through ongoing systemic inequalities, and through eruptions of ... • Samuel Thomson's Crusade: Populism, Folk Remedy, and Tradition in Timothy
           Flint and Catharine Maria Sedgwick
    • Abstract: Late in the spring of 1790, a doctor was called to the home of John and Hannah Thomson in the fledgling community of Alstead, New Hampshire. Though firmly on the east coast, Alstead still resembled a frontier community, and its doctors, though respected, were not as well-trained as some that could be found in larger population centers. The Thomson family had suffered an outbreak of measles earlier that spring which had largely abated, but Hannah fared extremely poorly, and the disease retained a tenacious hold on her. John was away tending another parcel of land and had left their twenty-one-year-old son, Samuel, in charge of the household. Samuel watched with horror as the doctors "attended her without doing any ... Read More

  • Communicative Biocapitalism: The Voice of the Patient in Digital Health
and the Health Humanities by Olivia Banner (review)
    • Abstract: Olivia Banner joins a growing number of health humanities scholars who take the field and its histories, methods, pedagogical practices, and "classic" texts as objects of analysis. In Communicative Biocapitalism: The Voice of the Patient in Digital Health and the Health Humanities, Banner discusses the digital health revolution and the institutionalization of medical humanities as two aspects of what she calls communicative biocapitalism, which she defines as "an economic logic powered by the integration of people's articulations of their somatic experiences into biomedical research and modern health care" (49). In Banner's analysis of this neoliberal logic and process, value is extracted from the voices of ... Read More

  • Anti/Vax: Reframing the Vaccination Controversy by Bernice L. Hausman
           (review)
    • Abstract: At the heart of Bernice Hausman's Anti/Vax is a call to take vaccination skeptics at their word, to take their stories seriously. Drawing from her experience at Virginia Tech's Vaccination Research Group (VRG) interviewing people who do not vaccinate or only partially vaccinate, Hausman argues that while vaccination controversy is understood within popular discourses to be a problem of science denial, it is in fact a problem of social and political disagreement. She proposes that "vaccine skepticism is linked to various beliefs and practices that are actually not unusual in American society, and that such skepticism is sustained by popular suspicions of government, sponsored scientific research, and pharmaceutical ... • The Good Story: Exchanges on Truth, Fiction and Psychotherapy by J. M.
           Coetzee and Arabella Kurtz (review)
    • Abstract: "We are all fictioneers"; so wagers a character in one of J. M. Coetzee's fictionalized autobiographies.1 It is an utterance that reveals something true about every effort to tell the story of one's life, whether to oneself or to others. The famed writer describes his experimental memoirs as "autrebiographies"; beset by a predicament which renders efforts to capture the past, and the self who once occupied it, an incomplete, perhaps finally, impossible task, his neologism highlights how every instance of personal history is mediated by the distortions of memory and the indeterminacies of language. Accordingly, the only truly true account of the self is the one prepared to admit it is an unfinished story which ... Read More

  • Late-Life Love: A Memoir by Susan Gubar (review)
    • Abstract: If Late-Life Love were only a study of novels, poetry, and films in which persons of a certain age fall in love, then it would not be reviewed in this journal. The book's subtitle opens its second strand, which is a memoir of a period of time—maybe a year but it's vague—in which Susan Gubar and her partner who is called only Don (check the new Norton Critical Edition of Pride and Prejudice to learn his surname) experience multiple injuries and illnesses (more his than hers), move out of the home where they built lives together when they married in late middle age, and through all this, keep themselves in love with each other. As these two strands entwine—art and life informing each other—a third emerges: reading as ... Read More
