  • Liquid Metal Masculinity: The New Man, Will, and US Military
           Pharmacological Supersoldiers

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: “A generation that had gone to school on a horse-drawn streetcar now stood under the open sky in a countryside in which nothing remained unchanged but the clouds, and beneath these clouds, in a force field of destructive torrents and explosions, was the tiny, fragile human body.”Creating soldiers who can somehow survive and thrive amidst the explosions and violence underneath the clouds is one of the most important examples of political-medical imagination work of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Driven on by the technological hell of World War I combat, conceptions of the soldier as an internally armored New Man envisioned a new kind of human who could withstand the stresses and trauma of modern, industrial ... • “Puttin’ Eyes on a Horse”: Horsemanship Attunements and the
Merry-go-round of Kentucky’s Thoroughbred Racing Industry

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On the backside of a Kentucky track, Reverberate, or “Reverb” for short, is recovering after finishing second in a thrilling fall race.1 Some of the training team I work with are standing around chatting, still giddy from the run. Reverb and her groom, Bartolo, pace around shedrow, the covered dirt path that runs around the barn’s perimeter. Quick, eager strides in tandem leave boot and horseshoe prints in the soft ground. Wesley, the trainer, stands off to the side, his eyes locked on the filly as she comes and goes. Afternoon sun cuts into the dark barn. The filly’s body still pulses from the exertion of the race, calling on us to attend. Veins have arisen like webs under her sleek black coat, still wet from the ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A few years ago, there was an initiative by the local government to involve local people in greening the Lamongan region, but it wasn’t quite successful…Then, when the Sunan Drajat1 pesantren got involved, the results were pretty good. Both pesantren members and villagers got involved, and you can see it is greener now…look at the roads in Lamongan City and Paciran, lots of trees erected now.Mr. Hasbullah tells me this on the balcony of Kyai Ghofur’s house while we are enjoying a cup of tea and light snacks prepared by pesantren members. He then shows me pictures and documents on the pesantren’s involvement in the contemporary environmental movement in Indonesia. Inside the house, he shows me an example of a Kemiri ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Nearly every day, Oman’s major Arabic and English language newspapers feature articles showcasing corporate generosity. Carefully posed photos of formally dressed Omani businessmen and women—in traditional dishdashas, massars, and abayas—signing agreements of support, posing alongside members of communities they are helping, and receiving awards in honor of their generosity are commonplace alongside articles announcing corporate initiatives, sponsorship arrangements, and programs designed to help Omani communities and build the nation. In spite of their ubiquity, such articles were carefully read, discussed, and analyzed by many of my Omani friends, colleagues, and interviewees— the merits of particular companies ... Read More

  • The Political Opportunity of Heritage: Appropriations, Memories, and

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the last two decades, the residents of a neighborhood located on the coastline in the city of Valencia (Spain) have been offering adamant resistance, determined to stop the City Council’s plans for urban development (see Figure 1). Its outstanding tenacity has led it to become an international icon of opposition to neoliberal urban policies (Santamarina and Mompó 2020). Throughout the conflict, the neighborhood of Cabanyal1 has witnessed the emergence of a variety of forms of collective action, numerous protest efforts, and a broad range of strategies based on the notion of heritage. In this article, we take several premises as a starting point for understanding the role of heritage in a context of urban ... • Migranthood: Youth in a New Era of Deportation by Lauren Heidbrink
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Thinking about my own sense of identity, I realise that it has always depended on the fact of being a migrant, on the difference from the rest of you. So one of the fascinating things about this discussion is to find myself centered at last. Now that, in the postmodern age, you all feel so dispersed, I become centered. What I’ve thought of as dispersed and fragmented comes, paradoxically, to be the representative modern experience! This is “coming home” with a vengeance! Most of it I much enjoy—welcome to migranthood. It is fitting that most scholars cite Stuart Hall as the coiner of the term, “migranthood.” In this essay, he discusses his own experience, as a migrant himself, of dispersal and fragmentation. His ... Read More

  • Invisibility by Design: Women and Labor in Japan’s Digital Economy by
           Gabriella Lukács (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Invisibility by Design is about the “exploitation” of women by “the masculinist world of entrepreneurship” (73) in various pursuits in “Japan’s digital economy” (79) which rendered their labor “invisible” (73). It does so by describing the works and experiences of some women who have achieved varying degrees of celebrity status in several online activities— as photographers, net idols, bloggers, and amateur traders, and also as cell phone novelists—with the aim of “exposing the centrality of feminized affective labor” by online companies controlled by men for profits (12).The book begins with the introduction which explains its aims, discusses the works of various authors in relation to the emergence of ... • No Alternative: Childbirth, Citizenship, and Indigenous Culture in Mexico
           by Rosalynn A. Vega (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Home-birth, water-birth, delayed cord clamping, belly paints, prolonged breastfeeding, cloth diapers, and Montessori education. These are some lauded practices from the members of the global humanized birth movement that claims to challenge the capitalist, patriarchal biomedical hegemonies and empower women through respecting births. In her book, No Alternative: Childbirth, Citizenship, and Indigenous Culture in Mexico, Rosalynn Vega questions these claims of resistance and offers an insightful analysis of the political economy of midwifery networks in Mexico. By drawing a stark contrast between traditional midwives who come from indigenous backgrounds and professional midwives of foreign or upper-class Mexican ... Read More

  • Healing Labor: Japanese Sex Work in the Gendered Economy by Gabrielle Koch
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Studying Japanese women’s sex work in contemporary Japan, Gabrielle Koch’s ethnography, Healing Labor: Japanese Sex Work in the Gendered Economy, insightfully shows how sex workers make sense of the multilayered contradictions they face: an essential work that reproduces Japanese male workers’ productivity and yet is stigmatized; highly visible sex commerce in Japan while sexual labor itself is largely concealed; sex work that is lucrative and empowering but still looked down upon; a job that entails not only physical but also emotional and psychological skill sets to produce iyashi (healing) for customers but is assumed to be effortless embodiment of inherited femininity. “Even as women in the sex industry view ... • Affective Justice: The International Criminal Court and the Pan-Africanist
Pushback by Kamari Maxine Clarke (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Affective Justice offers an extensive, ambitious, and thorough reconsideration of how we think about international criminal justice, as principally embodied in the International Criminal Court (ICC) today, and the pushback against it by African countries. Starting from the premise that international justice is not simply about the law in a narrow sense but also about affect and emotions and the ways these get technocratically sublimated, accentuated, and expunged though legal discussions, Clarke maps out the discursive terrain of 20th and 21st century attempts to create criminal culpability for gross abuses of human rights such as genocide. The thrust of the book is twofold: first, that undergirding the history ... Read More

  • Virulent Zones: Animal Disease and Global Health at China’s Pandemic
           Epicenter by Lyle Fearnley (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this exceptionally timely ethnography of avian husbandry and virological sciences in China, Lyle Fearnley answers a question that the catastrophic events of the past 14 months have rendered only more urgent: Why do viral pandemics always seem to come out of China' And what, if anything, can or should be done about it'“Seem” is the operative word here, and Fearnley smartly evades the question of whether China really is uniquely culpable, in any normative sense, for producing zoonotic viral threats like COVID-19. Instead, using H5N1 avian influenza as a prototypical example, he explores the scientific, discursive, and social origins and ramifications of this perception of culpability. When Fearnley refers to ... Read More

  • A Revolution in Fragments: Traversing Scales of Justice, Ideology, and
Practice in Bolivia by Mark Goodale (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In A Revolution in Fragments: Traversing Scales of Justice, Ideology, and Practice in Bolivia, Mark Goodale skillfully tracks the political history of President Evo Morales’s legal and political reform project in Bolivia from 2006 to 2015. The book draws from interviews and conversations with Bolivian intellectuals, political leaders, jurists, and indigenous activists, as well as detailed readings of federal legislation and constitutional texts. Goodale argues that the juridification of Bolivian politics during this period became a “mechanism for much more limited, exclusionary, and ambiguous shifts” (241). Through new kinds of legislation, Morales’ government was able to “harness the power of the rule of law” as ... Read More
