  • Kdy mít dítě' Představy o ideálním věku rodičovství v Evropě

Abstract: Based on data from the European Social Survey (2018), this paper examines ideas about the ideal age to become a parent in 28 European countries. Using multi-level models, it assesses the impact of real timing of childbirth and childlessness acceptance at the country level while controlling for individual characteristics. The findings show that the variability of ideas about ideal age at the country level is relatively limited and correlates significantly with the real timing of childbearing. A higher ideal age is preferred by women, people with higher education, the childless, and parents of one child. Although at the individual level lower childlessness acceptance is associated with a preference for a lower ideal age for childbearing, at the country level this is not the case. In countries where postponement of childbearing is more advanced, differences in attitudes about the ideal age of childbearing, particularly the ideal age to become a father, by education and age are smaller. This paper contributes to the understanding of differences in the perception of age norms of childbearing in Europe and to the factors influencing the postponement of childbearing.

Abstract: Long-term cultural trends of increasing fragility of partnerships, changing gender roles and the culture of childhood create a situation in which forms of shared parenting are becoming increasingly relevant. This review study aims to make available to the Czech audience a summary of foreign research on the impact of post-divorce/separation arrangements on children, with particular emphasis on those forms in which the child alternates between parents’ households. In peer-reviewed articles from Web of Science, Scopus, J-Stor, Springer, and similar databases, we first sought to answer the question of what negative and positive consequences household turnover produces. A review of the relevant literature shows that the assumption of an overall negative effect of alternating care is not consistent with the results of most analyses. Rather, the comparisons show the opposite, i.e. a predominance of positive consequences of shared custody, but modified by circumstances. Therefore, we next focus on papers that examine the most important intervening factors, which are parental conflict, the status of the family of origin, and the parents’ new partnerships. Detailed research in this area shows that only in families with significantly negative circumstances (extensive and chronic conflict, economic deprivation etc.) can the negatives of the circumstances outweigh the benefits of contact with both parents that shared custody generally brings. In the conclusion of the text, we summarize the findings from foreign sources, discuss their transferability to the Czech environment and, based on the literature, suggest areas that should be addressed in an effort to deepen this field of research.

  • Dopady pandemie na sólo rodiče a jejich potřebu

Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the work, personal, and family lives of all Czechs. In this regard, single parents are one of the most vulnerable groups. They are very frequent recipients of external support, provided by the state or by grandparents. Government restrictions, accompanied by, among other things, reduced availability of institutional childcare services, have significantly increased parents’ demand for informal childcare. However, grandparents have not been able to fully satisfy this demand. Within the proposed typology, the so-called risk group of single parents who did not receive the required childcare support concerning school preparation or free time, as well financial or material help, was identified. The size of this group grew during the pandemic. According to regression analysis, parents of preschool and younger school children, working in precarious forms of work, in a low-income situation, and/or in rental housing, were at higher risk of falling into the group of single parents who need informal support

Abstract: Foster care in many ways challenges the dichotomy between home and workplace, intimate care, and paid employment. Foster parents are supposed to provide love and safety to children who cannot be with their biological parents for various reasons while receiving financial rewards. Foster care in many ways challenges the idea of parental care as care embedded in a loving relationship that should by its very nature be free of financial rewards. Using semi-structured interviews with eight foster parents, the paper analyses how the foster parents (de)construct the boundaries between the private sphere of care and what meanings they attribute to the financial reward they receive. The paper points out that foster parenting reflects an established gender order, within which care appears as an activity intrinsically linked with the gender identity of women. However, the identity of foster parents has simultaneously been constructed also in terms of a professional identity that permeates the sphere of paid work. Foster parents construct their care both as a labour of love and full-time employment. They actively deconstruct the opposition between love/care and paid work and articulate care as a value that should be financially evaluated.

      Pages: 93–1 - 93–1
Abstract: Through a qualitative analysis of interviews with 52 men and women with non-heterosexual identities, the article deepens the understanding of parental intentions and the formation of pathways to gay and lesbian parenting in the Czech Republic. The article explains the reduced parental intentions and postponement of gay and lesbian parenting in the contexts of heteronormative, biologizing and gendered discourses of parenthood and the lack of legislative recognition of homoparental families in Czechia. The analysis also sheds light on the various choices of gay and lesbian pathways to parenthood in conditions that severely limit their parenting options.

  • „Já jsem právně úplně mimo“ – Zkušenosti rodičů z
           homoparentálních rodin v České republice

Abstract: The article focuses on the definition and description of basic forms of parenthood in homoparental families, i.e. families in which a child or children are raised by two parents of the same sex. The findings are based on the results of a qualitative phenomenological survey involving 37 in-depth interviews with same-sex parents. The research approach emphasised the actors’ views. Homoparental families are specific in the Czech Republic in that the lack of equality of social parents is currently supported by legislation. Since same-sex parents feel equal in terms of the relationship with their child concerning both parental responsibility and childcare mutual replaceability, they have a critical perception of the legal inequality of social parents, who are not permitted by legislation to assume the role of the legal representative of a shared child. The declaration of parental equality with respect to the child can be interpreted as one of the strategies that same-sex parents have adopted in terms of strengthening the position of social parents. The deeper analysis of the data revealed differences in the parenting experiences of two types of same-sex parents. Lesbian women perceive the relationship with the child that they gave birth to differently to the relationship with a child that their partner gave birth to, while gay men deny or play down the importance of such differences.

Abstract: This paper deals with work values as an important factor in individual career decisions. It relies on data from the PIAAC survey and the follow-up SKILLS II survey. Using a sample of Czech men and women 20–45 years old, we examine the factors that affect the formation of orientations to work as compared with family, and the values of high salary and career progress as compared with intrinsic enjoyment of work. Our results show the significant positive influence of family background for men and of higher education, especially for women, on an orientation to a job and to enjoyment of its contents. The orientation of men toward achieving high earnings is strengthened by the need to ensure income for their families, especially raising children, while for women, work centrality and perceived career importance increases after long periods of unemployment. The results show the contribution of high educational achievement to closing the gaps between the work-family orientations of men and women, but also a return to traditional gender roles during periods of childcare. In the conclusion we indicate directions for further research to focus on the different consequences of experiences with unemployment for men and women and on the role of cognitive skills in work values that are not always analogically related to formal education.

Abstract: Several factors that influence playing the role of grandparent are described in the scientific literature. Basically, these factors contribute to forming the grandparent’s role at the time when the role is played. This article takes a different approach to the topic. It considers factors shaping the grandparent’s role in the past, not in the present. Consistent with this approach, the article deals with family factors that contribute to the shaping of the grandmother’s role. The aim of this article is to answer the question: among the interviewed women, what roles do the figures of grandmothers play in shaping conceptions of the role of grandmother' For this purpose, interviews conducted with eight women who had personal experience with the role of grandmother were analyzed. The article identifies two family factors mentioned in the grandmothers’ narratives: upbringing and grandmothers’ patterns. These factors were the first to shape individual conceptions of the future grandmother’s role. In the women’s lives, these factors affected the role of grandmother long before the women became grandmothers. The article points out specific aspects of the role of a grandmother that are influenced by these factors.
