  • Health and Safety Practitioner Competency Development Using Experiential
           Learning

    • Authors: Laurie Martin Southgate
Abstract: During the construction of a copper mine in Kazakhstan, the contractor health and safety (H&S) team had members who lacked necessary competency in hazard recognition and intervention skills to support the projects Zero Harm philosophy. An action research method was used in this study to create, assess, and improve an intervention strategy of developing the contractor H&S team competencies using experiential learning at the work site. A training and development program that used classroom instruction, hazard control bulletins for specific site hazards, and experiential learning activities supported by task observation checklists to aid in hazard identification in the work area was developed and implemented. The experiential learning process used a four-step cyclic process of planning for task observation in the work area, observation, engagement, and reflection. Task observation checklists were developed and became an effective tool to support hazard recognition. The average number of at-risk deficiencies identified and corrected per observation was three. Critical reflection after the task observation and engagement experience was used by the H&S practitioners to recognize what they learned, how the learning could be applied to future situations, and reflection allowed for the consideration of what knowledge and skills still required further development. This study found that the experiential learning approach implemented, supported by mentoring was effective to train health and safety practitioners in the evidence-based practice of hazard identification and risk management in their work areas.

  • Commentary to the prologues of “The situation of the working class in
England”, by Friedrich Engels 200 years after his birth

    • Authors: Josemanuel Luna-Nemecio
Abstract: The study offers commentary on the Prologues of the book “The situation of the working class in England” written by Friedrich Engels in 1845. The purpose of this research is to commemorate two hundred years of the birth of Engels, considering him as a nodal thinker to think about the situation of the world proletarianized humanity in the 21st century. The main results were: 1) there is a continuity in the theoretical and political argument developed in Engels' analysis presented in the three Prologues analyzed; 2) for Engels there is a relationship between the development of contemporary capitalism and the conditions of possibility for the political organization of the proletariat; 3) Engels' thought is a hub for thinking about the living conditions of proletarianized humanity in the 21st century.

  • From the sexual division of labor to the naturalization of oppression: a
study on the works of Engels and Clastres

    • Authors: Mariana Silveira dos Santos Rosa
Abstract: This article intends to present a study on different approaches to the sexual division of work. This has been based on classical texts of social thought, in order to establish a comparison between two anthropological studies, in which the sexual division of work is seen as the basis of the social relationships of certain societies. It was decided to work with the books “The Society against State”, by Pierre Clastres, and “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State”, by Friedrich Engels, in which the division of work by sex is presented as a socially constructed aspect in the process of development of capitalism. Thus, we sought to map some elements that may help the understanding of the problem related to the sexual division of work.

  • Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx: On overcoming material scarcity as an
economic condition for the full realization of the communist project of
           the emancipation of humanity

    • Authors: Juan Vicente Martínez-Bautista
Abstract: Friedrich Engels along with Karl Marx are the builders of the materialist conception of history, the critique of political economy and scientific socialism. And upon reflecting on the communist project for the emancipation of humanity, they conclude that overcoming material scarcity is the fundamental economic condition for carrying out the total realization of said project. In particular, when Engels correlates and identifies respectively the concepts of the kingdom of necessity and the kingdom of freedom with Marx's concepts of the prehistory of humanity and truly human society; not only does it philosophically substantiate them, but it also gives them historical and material specification. Herein lies Engel's contribution to the project of scientific socialism.
