  • Does Early Nutrition Support Reduce ICU Muscle Wasting'
    • Authors: Lomangino; Kevin
Abstract: KEY MESSAGESMuscle mass is reduced by 10% to 30% within a week of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU).It is unclear if early nutrition support plays a role in limiting loss of muscle mass and preventing ICU-acquired weakness.

  • Saturated Fat: No Definitive Answers on Role in CVD Prevention
    • Authors: Lomangino; Kevin
Abstract: KEY MESSAGESCurrent best evidence suggests a modest protective effect of replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat on cardiovascular disease risk. The quality of evidence is insufficient to conclusively establish the benefits of this approach.

  • A Controversial Risk Calculator
    • Authors: Lomangino; Kevin
Abstract: KEY MESSAGESProminent cardiologists disagree about the accuracy of a new risk calculator developed as part of updated U.S. guidelines for cardiovascular disease prevention. The risk score generated by the calculator should inform patient conversations regarding treatment, and should not automatically trigger a statin prescription.

  • Less Focus on LDL in New CVD Prevention Guidelines
    • Authors: Lomangino; Kevin
Abstract: image KEY MESSAGESFor most patients, decisions regarding cholesterol-lowering drug therapy should be based on an overall cardiovascular risk score, not LDL cholesterol levels, according to new U.S. guidelines.Patients with a 10-year cardiovascular risk of 7.5% are now candidates for drug therapy—a threshold that will expand the population advised to consider statins.Patients at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease are advised to reduce saturated fat intake to 5% to 6% of energy, avoid red meat, and follow a risk-reducing dietary pattern.
