  • Planar Phased-Array Antennas: Mutual Coupling and Ultralow Peak Sidelobes
    • Authors: Will P.M.N. Keizer;
      Pages: 14 - 28
      Abstract: This article will deal with the impact of mutual coupling on the far-field peak sidelobe performance of a finite planar phased-array antenna having a circular aperture shape and containing 2,066 elements arranged in a triangular grid. The radiator that is used is of the open-ended rectangular waveguide type, vertically polarized. The computation of the far-field performance of the array antenna is based on the use of embedded element patterns (EEPs). The effect of mutual coupling on the EEPs is taken into account through measured coupling coefficients.

  • Magnetodielectric Materials in Antenna Design: Exploring the Potentials
           for Reconfigurability
    • Authors: Evmorfili Andreou;Theodore Zervos;Antonis A. Alexandridis;George Fikioris;
      Pages: 29 - 40
      Abstract: The growing demand for low-profile, efficient compact antennas with reconfigurable characteristics has prompted antenna engineers to use novel materials in place of conventional dielectrics. Magnetodielectric materials combining both dielectric and magnetic properties have been widely investigated. In this article, we present a comprehensive literature study that examines the advantages and limitations of using these materials. We focus primarily on magnetodielectric materials exhibiting anisotropic behavior and tunable permeability by means of physical mechanisms (e.g., by applying an external magnetic field). This article provides theoretical background, modeling guidelines, and a step-by-step simulation procedure, and aims to be a straightforward and useful guide for the development of reconfigurable antennas using magnetic materials. We explain the reasons for selecting ferrimagnetic oxides for antenna applications and discuss their fundamental properties. The critical parameters that should be taken into consideration for the determination of the permeability of ferrimagnetic oxides in various magnetization states are reported. To demonstrate the proper use of this analysis, we have designed, simulated, and implemented a reconfigurable ferrite antenna prototype. The proposed simulated procedure is validated via measurements.

  • Improvements in Wi-MAX Reception: A New Dual-Mode Wideband Circularly
           Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna
    • Authors: Rajkishor Kumar;Sreenath Reddy Thummaluru;Raghvendra Kumar Chaudhary;
      Pages: 41 - 49
      Abstract: An examination of a new kind of rectangular dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) demonstrates that it delivers better gain and radiation efficiency for operating in the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wi-MAX) (3.3-3.7 GHz) band. The new dual-mode wideband circularly polarized (CP) DRA is implemented by using a stair-shaped microstrip feed line, a pair of L-shaped slots in the ground plane, and a rectangular DR.

  • Dual-Polarization Antennas With High Isolation and Polarization Purity: A
           Review and Comparison of Cross-Coupling Mechanisms
    • Authors: Mirhamed Mirmozafari;Guifu Zhang;Caleb Fulton;Richard J. Doviak;
      Pages: 50 - 63
      Abstract: Existing dual-polarization antennas are categorized into three separate groups according to their topologies. Various cross-coupling mechanisms between orthogonal polarizations are specifically discussed in three categories and related to port isolation and cross-polarization radiation. Some representative antennas of each group are presented, and their performance is compared in terms of port isolation, cross polarization, frequency bandwidth (BW), dimension, and complexity. The techniques to enhance the polarization purity is discussed in the context of example antennas. Finally, further research opportunities in each category are introduced.

  • Investigating the Polarization of an Omnidirectional Patch Antenna:
           Polarization Change With Respect to Radiation Angle
    • Authors: Murat Emre Ermutlu;Oskari Amper;Yuda Luz;Kari Kalle-Petteri Kiesi;Matthew S. Schirmacher;Joseph Schuler;P. Sakari Sistonen;
      Pages: 64 - 71
      Abstract: In ultradense networks (UDNs), finding an omnidirectional, yet orthogonally polarized, antenna in a reasonable size has been a challenge. We have developed an antenna type that appears to address this need. These antennas, which operate in pairs, offer enhanced polarization characteristics and can be scaled to operate at different frequencies. Moreover, the gain of each antenna, and thus the pair, can be increased by using more than one radiating element as suggested by array theory. To analyze the polarization characteristics of the antenna pair, a complex polarization ratio was used and compared to more traditional methods. The antenna has been prototyped and tested.

    • Authors: Gary A. Thiele;
      Pages: 72 - 76
      Abstract: The free-space Friis equation is often used in a half space over a conducting ground plane, sometimes with erroneous results. In this article, corrections for the Friis equation are shown for several ground-plane cases. This article also offers an explanation for the previously misunderstood 6-dB puzzle in the monopole-to-monopole case.

  • Dynamical Short-Term Prediction of Rain Attenuation in W Band: A
           Time-Series Model With Simpler Structure and Higher Accuracy
    • Authors: Bin Xue;Ningning Tong;Xin Xu;Xingyu He;
      Pages: 77 - 86
      Abstract: Most existing rain attenuation prediction models are tested only at 55 GHz. Few W-band models have been tested, and these models present problems associated with high complexity and cannot predict with high accuracy in the short term. A dynamical short-term prediction method is proposed here, and it has a simpler structure and higher accuracy than previous rain attenuation models and can theoretically be implemented at any station and frequency. The method uses the relationship among time series to establish an autoregression integrated moving average (ARIMA) model, conducts a stationary test, transforms the nonstationary series into a stationary series, and estimates the parameters.

  • Miniaturizing a Microstrip Antenna Using Metamaterials and Metasurfaces
           [Antenna Applications Corner]
    • Authors: Surendrakumar Painam;Chandramohan Bhuma;
      Pages: 91 - 135
      Abstract: A smaller microstrip antenna design is essential for current and future wireless applications. For the design proposed in this article, researchers achieved size reduction when a circular microstrip patch is loaded with a metamaterial structure using a complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) with partially loaded nonuniform metasurfaces (NUMSs) on a ground plane. The designed antenna achieved a size reduction of 74% compared to a conventional microstrip antenna. The proposed antenna, resonating at 6.22 GHz, is designed, fabricated, and tested, and the measured results are then compared with the simulations as well as with the designs reported in the literature. The proposed antenna can be used for wireless applications, such as an indoor base-station antenna for vehicle-tovehicle communications.

           Circularly-Polarized Millimeter-Wave Antennas [Measurements Corner]
    • Authors: Ad Reniers;Qiang Liu;Mohadig Rousstia;Matti Herben;Hubregt Visser;Adrianus Bart Smolders;
      Pages: 98 - 138
      Abstract: A framework is presented to investigate the leading causes that determine deviations between simulation and measurement results in circularly polarized (CP) antennas operating in the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) range. For mm-wave antennas in general and CP antennas in particular, the whole validation procedure is considered to be especially challenging. The mechanical differences between the application design of the antenna and its measurable counterpart also have a significant impact on the antenna characteristics.

      Pages: 111 - 142
      Abstract: In late 2016, U.S. government personnel serving in Havana, Cuba, began presenting to their embassy medical unit after experiencing unusual auditory and/or sensory stimuli of variable intensity and character, with associated onset of varied neurological manifestations. Initial signs and symptoms pointed toward injury of the auditory system… The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Medical Services, subsequently convened an expert panel in July 2017, which came to consensus that the triage findings were most likely related to neurotrauma from a nonnatural source and recommended that further investigation into this novel cluster of findings was necessary. Reports on the likely source of these sounds and examines the possibility of malicious intent on part of the Cuban government.

  • Hardware-Based Courseware for Teaching the Theory of Transmission Lines
           [Education Corner]
    • Authors: Zuo-Min Tsai;Yu-Syuan Wang;
      Pages: 112 - 122
      Abstract: This article presents a hardware-based courseware package for use in teaching transmission line (Tline) theory. The hardware components include large inductors and capacitors that are used to slow down the speed of signals in the Tline and LEDs to allow the slowed-down signals to be observed by the human eye. This courseware can be used to augment the laboratory work in electromagnetic courses that teach Tline theory or for experimentation in microwave circuits, such as open/short stubs, branch line couplers, or Wilkinson dividers. A workshop was conducted to collect feedback on the proposed courseware from students after they had received instruction in Tline theory using both softwarebased and the proposed hardwarebased courseware. In their feedback, the majority of students expressed more interest in the proposed hardware-based courseware than in the conventional software-based courseware.

      Pages: 123 - 129
      Abstract: The implementation of a web-based application to estimate the path loss in outdoor environments is presented in this article. The tool provides the results of an empirical formulation in a user-friendly interface. The benefit of the proposed system is that the required information of the environment is obtained from OpenStreetMap, which allows the calculation of the propagation everywhere easily. In addition, the formulation is applicable to both rural and urban environments. The web application has been implemented using HTML5 and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)3. The open source JavaScript library Leaflet has been used to include interactive maps. The simulation tool has been validated with measurements in a real environment. A good agreement between simulated and measured results has been found.

  • Entrepreneurship: Getting Your Research Off the Bench and Out Into the
           Real World [Young Professionals]
    • Authors: Cynthia Furse;Arabella Bhutto;
      Pages: 139 - 142
      Abstract: Taking an idea off the bench and into the market, often called technology transfer, encompasses a variety of activities by which inventions flow from basic research to commercial entities and then to public use. This article describes two useful tools to help improve the translation of ideas to market. The first is the Business Model Canvas, or Lean Canvas for Business (LCB), an existing tool that helps entrepreneurs identify a minimum viable product (MVP) and channels and methods to take it to market. The second is a new tool (in the early pilot test stages), the Lean Canvas for Invention (LCI), that can help academic researchers identify the most valuable research questions (MVRqs) that may yield inventions that could later move through a Business Model Canvas to become a viable product.
