  • A Reconfigurable Reflector Antenna System With a Hybrid Scanning Method:
           Imaging antennas for simultaneous multiple spot and wide coverage beams

      Abstract: On-orbit beam reconfiguration and beam scanning are the two most important features for future satellite antenna payloads. There are several ways of achieving the desired flexibility using different types of antennas and different scanning methods. This article presents single- and dual-reflector antenna systems where reconfiguration is achieved using high-gain multiple beams (HGMBs) employing imaging reflector configurations. Beam scanning over the global coverage is achieved using a combination of precise electronic scanning over a small coverage region and a coarse mechanical scanning over a wide global coverage. This method results in significant improvement in gain relative to conventional methods that employ element beams and can simultaneously provide both HGMBs and wide-area coverage beams with low-cost payloads.

      Abstract: Small satellites (smallsats) provide low-cost access to space and have historically been used for flight technology demonstrations and limited-function space science activities. Novel antenna technologies have enabled high-performance smallsat telecommunications, science in Earth orbit, and the first CubeSat mission to deep space. In the past five years, technologists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have designed, tested, and successfully flown these innovative and enabling smallsat antennas. This article describes these innovations and their impact on smallsat performance for recent and future NASA missions.

  • Paving the Way for Higher-Volume Cost-Effective Space Antennas: Designing
           for manufacturing, assembly, integration, and test

      Abstract: The commercial satellite industry, which has primarily been focused on highly customized geostationary satellites, is seeing increasing interest in constellations of small satellites (smallsats) operating in nongeostationary orbits. These smallsat constellations require larger quantities of antennas that are cost-/mass-effective and compact. Ideally, this is achieved by designing for manufacturing, assembly, integration, and test (DFMAIT). Maxar Technologies Company (MDA), a global leader in antenna systems, developed its expertise through R&D, establishing itself as a key supplier for antennas on constellations such as Iridium-NEXT, O3b, and OneWeb. These capabilities range from innovative steerable antenna designs, fastener-free feedchains, 3D-printed antennas as well as automated assembly and test setups. MDA is also leveraging this acquired knowledge to develop new products for future geostationary missions. This article describes the different antenna designs developed at MDA using the DFMAIT approach and presents automated test and integration setups developed for higher-volume production.

  • A Ka-Band Active Aperiodic Constrained Lens Antenna for Multibeam
           Applications: Active discrete lens antennas are promising alternative
           solutions for multibeam coverage using a single aperture

      Abstract: This article presents the design, manufacturing, and testing of a transmitting active discrete lens antenna demonstrator in the Ka band. These antennas permit generating multibeam coverage using only a single main aperture and exhibit excellent scanning capabilities and a large-frequency bandwidth. Because the beamforming is mainly achieved in the free space, the complexity and cost of the antenna grows marginally with the number of beams and radiating elements. For these characteristics, active discrete lens antennas are a promising alternative to more conventional antenna solutions that are based on phased arrays and reflectors antennas, especially for Ka-band and higher frequencies where the dimensions become smaller.

      Abstract: An innovative measurement methodology is developed and successfully implemented for a spot beam antenna and payload characterization of high-throughput satellites (HTSs) in a compact antenna test facility (CATF). With the developed measurement methodology, total measurement time and measurement setup duration are reduced by more than 70% with respect to conventional measurement techniques. The proposed methodology is successfully implemented in multiple spacecraft (SC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

      Abstract: This article presents some recent developments in multiplebeam antennas (MBAs) based on reflectarrays for communication satellites in the Kurz (K) and Kurz-above (Ka) bands. The existing high-throughput satellites commonly employ four reflector antennas to provide cellular coverage that is formed by multiple spot beams in a four-color scheme. Reflectarray antennas are proposed as an attractive solution for the design of novel MBA configurations to produce multispot coverage, with a smaller number of apertures than conventional MBA systems based on reflector technology. Single and dual reflectarray configurations have been considered for the purpose of exploiting their ability to produce independent beams in different polarizations and frequencies.

  • Parallel-Shaping Technique for a Ring-Focus Reflector Antenna: A multiband
           Gregorian ring-focus reflector antenna for the Satcom flyaway terminal

      Abstract: The article describes an innovative shaping procedure for the Gregorian ring-focus reflector antenna with two swappable feed units (horn and subreflector) and a common reflector antenna for the flyaway terminal for communication at the C and Ku bands. Over such a multiband, the main challenge is to achieve a compact antenna structure that meets stringent radio-frequency (RF) specifications. The optimization is carried out to achieve enhanced peak gain and reduction of the sidelobe level through rotationally symmetric shaping of the main and subreflectors. Circular symmetric shaping provides ease in manufacturing of the subreflector and identical segments of the main reflector for portability. The measured results of a prototype model of the shaped ringfocus antenna with swappable feed units support the parallelshaping technique.

  • A Ka-Band Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar Instrument: A modular sparse
           array antenna design

      Abstract: The article presents the design of a Ka-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instrument based on innovative phased-array antennas, with steering capability in azimuth and elevation. To limit the complexity and costs associated with conventional large active arrays with regular layouts, a sparse array concept is presented. The proposed approach results in a 40% reduction in the number of active controls, with a marginal reduction in performance compared to conventional phased-array solutions previously developed for SAR instruments. Additionally, a preliminary thermomechanical design is presented to assess the challenges associated with the industrial production and to identify options for accommodation on the spacecraft.

  • A Large Microstrip Patch Array With a Simplified Feed Network: A low
           cross-polarized design

      Abstract: Discontinuities in the feed lines are one of the major sources of spurious radiation that results in high cross-polarized (XP) radiation in microstrip-line-fed large arrays. This limits the use of the arrays in satellites where frequency is reused by means of polarization diversity. But for low-profile and lightweight designs, microstrip arrays are very useful. In this article, the design aspects of a simpler topology for the array feed network are discussed in detail. The purpose is to realize an array with high XP isolation by reducing the number of discontinuities. In addition, this topology reduces the length of the feed network of 2 × 2 subarrays by approximately 20%, as well as reducing the amount of the mutual coupling. A rectangular array with 32 × 16 elements has been realized at 10.7 GHz using this concept, for transmission of satellite telemetry data. The measured results of the array indicate more than 35 dB of XP isolation, even in the diagonal planes. The aperture efficiency of the array is found to be approximately 27%, which is very good for a microstrip-fed array.

  • M1-D FDTD Methods for Mobile Interactive Teaching and Learning of Wave
           Propagation in Transmission Lines [Education Corner]

      Abstract: This article presents the multiple 1D finite-difference time-domain (M1-D FDTD) methods for mobile interactive teaching and learning of wave propagation in transmission lines (TLs). Both the M1-D explicit FDTD method and the unconditionally stable M1-D fundamental alternating direction-implicit (FADI) FDTD method are discussed. Using the M1-D FDTD methods, multiple TLs, stubs, and circuit elements can be simulated efficiently. They are readily implemented on mobile devices and applied for mobile interactive teaching and learning of TL topics, including wave reflections from stubs, standing waves, and impedance matching. These topics can be elucidated clearly through interactive visualizations on mobile devices. Using the unconditionally stable M1-D FADI-FDTD method, the simulation may be "fast-forwarded" with enhanced efficiency by using a time-step size larger than the stability constraint. Student surveys and tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the method.

  • Base-Station Antennas in Wireless Communications: A Low-Profile-Loop,
           Resonator-Loaded Broadband Antenna [Wireless Corner]

      Abstract: A new low-profile antenna is proposed for modern base stations. The low profile of 0.164 λ0 (λ0 denotes the free wavelength corresponding to the center operating band) is obtained by solving the problems introduced by profile reduction. The concept of an L-shaped radiator-coupling feed-loop resonator is proposed. A new resonance is induced at lower frequency by the loop resonator. The measured results show a wide impedance bandwidth of 33.6% for a voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) of less than 1.7 (698-980 MHz) and isolation of more than 30 dB. Stable radiation patterns and gain are achieved over the desired band. In addition, a five-element, lowprofile antenna array with different electrical downtilts of 0°-14° is developed for the modern base station. A prototype has been fabricated to verify the proposed design. The antenna array achieves a wide impedance bandwidth of 34.7% (690-980 MHz) for VSWRs of less than 1.7 and stable half-power beamwidth (HPBW) (3-dB beamwidth) of 66 0 ± 60 at the H-plane (YOZplane); antenna gain of 14.2 ± 0.9 dBi is achieved with electrical downtilts of 0°, 7°, and 14°. Owing to these broadband low-profile advantages, the proposed antenna is a promising choice for modern 5G wireless applications.
