  • The Evolution From Metal Horns to Metahorns: The development of EM horns
           from their inception to the present day

      Abstract: The development of horn antennas is described from their inception in the 1890s to the present. Our main objective is to describe the advancement of their fundamental features, which are often driven by applications. The horn antennas discussed here were selected based on their significant concept advancements and are listed in chronological order within each class based on their first publication. Until the 1960s, only metal horns were used. In the 1970s, horns with dielectric loading were developed and resulted in several new and advanced horn designs. The latest renaissance in horn technology was fueled by the advent of metamaterials over the last 15 years, enabling horns with metasurfaces (metahorns) and horns with metalenses in particular. We now have air-filled, dielectric-loaded, and metamaterial-loaded horns; from inception, we have seen the transformation from metal horns to metahorns. More details will be supplied in the following sections.

  • Optimal Planar Electric Dipole Antennas: Searching for antennas reaching
           the fundamental bounds on selected metrics

      Abstract: Considerable time is often spent optimizing antennas to meet specific design metrics. Rarely, however, are the resulting antenna designs compared to rigorous physical bounds on those metrics. Here, we study the performance of optimized planar meander line antennas with respect to such bounds. Results show that these simple structures meet the lower bound on the radiation quality factor (Q-factor) (maximizing single-resonance fractional bandwidth) but are far from reaching the associated physical bounds for efficiency. The relative performance of other canonical antenna designs is comparable in similar ways, and the quantitative results are connected to intuitions from small antenna design, physical bounds, and matching network design.

  • An Improved Antenna Scattering Model: An equivalent model based on the
           reciprocity theorem

      Abstract: The Thévenin and Norton equivalent models of a receiving antenna cannot be used to calculate the antenna's scattered power because they are too simplistic. Based on the reciprocity theorem, a more elaborate equivalent model, consisting of a passive distributed transformer, is proposed for wire antennas in both the transmit and receive modes. The model parameters are derived from the antenna's transfer admittance parameters, the latter obtained under short circuit loading conditions in transmit mode only. A method is then applied to determine the new admittance parameters when the antenna is perturbed by an arbitrary load, which allows the receive-mode current distribution on the antenna to be calculated. Once the receive-mode current is known,scattered power can be calculated with a formula that avoids integration over the far-field sphere. The method has been applied to a λ/2dipole, λ-dipole, and three-element Yagi antenna for resistive loads spanning up to nine decades. Calculated scattered-power values are shown to agree almost perfectly with values obtained using a commercial simulator, thus demonstrating that it is possible to calculate scattered power based on the characterization of the antenna in transmit mode only. Results indicate that the aperture efficiency of a dipole antenna can exceed 50% when it is connected to a mismatched load. Finally, a newly defined transducer efficiency is presented, which can be used to choose an optimum load to obtain the best compromise between the aperture and scattering areas.

  • Resonant Near-Field Power Transfer: Revisiting the frequency-splitting
           phenomenon using the spherical mode theory antenna model

      Abstract: In this article, the resonant coupling phenomenon is revisited using the antenna theory. The methods for extracting the maximum power by the load (i.e., the frequency tracking, conjugate matching, and critical coupling adjustment) are addressed. To obtain the best performances in terms of the highest power and the greatest transmission range, the system's tuning needs to be very sharp regardless of the method applied. Conjugate matching is shown to be the best method for reaching the highest possible antenna separations and the maximum efficiency, but the critical coupling adjustment turns out to be more practical in the sense of the bandwidth when the antenna separations are not too large.

  • High-Performance Chipless Radio-Frequency Identification Tags: Using a
           slow-wave Approach for miniaturized structure

      Abstract: In this article, we introduce a novel planar chipless radiofrequency identification (RFID) tag. The tag is composed of multiple miniaturized reflecting resonators based on a slow-wave structure. To validate the proposed approach, a tag with a coding capacity of 16 b was designed with a compact size of 15 × 21 mm2. Tags with different pattern configurations were fabricated using a Rogers RO4003 substrate, and their radar cross-section (RCS) responses were measured. Compared to conventional multiresonator tags, the proposed tag offers a good miniaturization ratio and spectral coding efficiency. In addition, the measurements revealed a high quality factor (Q-factor) and coding robustness, which demonstrates the efficiency of the used approach to develop high-performance chipless tags.

  • A Low-Profile Multilayer Cylindrical Segment Fractal Dielectric Resonator
           Antenna: Usage for wideband applications

      Abstract: Until the 1980s, shielded dielectric resonators (DRs) were used as high-quality factor energy storage devices for filter and oscillator applications [1]. Later, they gained status as effective radiators due to the efforts of Long, McAllister, and Chen [2]. Since then, enormous DR antenna (DRA) designs have been explored and different feeding techniques introduced to achieve optimum antenna characteristics like high gain and low quality factor (Q-factor), etc. Compared to microstrip antennas, DRAs offer attractive features such as low loss, high efficiency, and wide impedance bandwidth (BW). Low-profile design and BW enhancement are two important aspects of effective antenna synthesis. Various BW enhancement techniques-like the compact slot DRA [3], aperture feeding, perturbation, cavity-backed disk, ring-shaped DRA, and the stacking of two or more dielectric layers [4]-can be applied on DRAs for this purpose. The stacked DRA, dual-segment, hybrid DRA, and slots in ground-plane approaches were also well suited to improve the impedance BW of DRA [5]-[10]. Various multilayer cylindrical DRA (MCDRA) structures have been proposed and investigated for BW enhancement like the stacked cylinder approach [11], [12], slotted coaxial layered structure [13], etc. More recently, various fractal geometries have been introduced for antenna applications. The main objective of fractal applications is to reduce the size of the antenna for wideband characteristics, while maintaining other design parameters at an acceptable level. Several antenna configurations based on fractal geometries have been previously examined [14].

  • A User-Friendly Glueless Solution for Dielectric Resonator Antennas Using
           a Probe-Feeding Technique [Antenna Applications Corner]

      Abstract: This article extends the glueless technology of a dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) to its most popularly used probe-fed geometry to achieve a comprehensive solution in terms of adhesive-free stable deployment along with improved radiation characteristics. Obtaining reduced cross-polarized (XP) fields through the glueless technique for commercial use is demonstrated in this article for the first time. It incorporates a single unit-shaped ground plane along with a pair of horizontal pins inserted through the DRA body and clamped with the metallic units of the structure. The study is based on the HEM11d mode, and the design maintains unperturbed modal characteristics. This has been experimentally verified for a 4-GHz antenna indicating as much as a 6-dBi gain with about a 12-dB reduction in cross-polar fields. This should find potential uses in practical applications.

      Abstract: This article presents the design of a portable, compact radio system for locating transmitters in real time. The system is based on the concept of a multibaseline additive interferometer and has a custom interferometric antenna configuration using a single low-cost, software-defined radio (SDR) as the receiver. It can tune to frequencies within the 5 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band (5.725-5.875 GHz) and is capable of switching the antenna configuration between either of the two baselines or a single antenna. The system can be used to reliably locate a transmitter and compute the delay-spread profile of a received signal.

      Abstract: This article reports the development of a direction-finding (DF) system and channel sounder, at 5.8 GHz, by a team of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, for the 2018 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Student Design Contest. Based on the competition's transmitter (Tx) specifications, a link budget was calculated to determine the components of a receiving-antenna system. Accordingly, a low-cost, small, battery-powered software-defined radio (SDR) based on a pseudo-Doppler antenna array (PDAA) receiving system was constructed using a HackRF One (HO) SDR, an Opera Cake (OC) switching board, and a circular array of omnidirectional monopoles (the PDAA). For digital signal processing, GNU Radio software was used.

      Abstract: This article presents the design of a complete radio system receiver to detect, in real time, the direction of arrival (DOA) of an incoming industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM)-band signal at 5.8 GHz. When a transmitter continuously sends a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK), modulated pseudo-noise (PN) code, the receiver estimates the DOA based on the received signal strength (RSS) and performs the channel sounding. The device that we describe includes a pattern-reconfigurable monopole antenna array, a front end, and a systemon-module (SOM). The SOM controls the antenna's main lobe direction by positive-intrinsic-negative (p-i-n) diode switching, configures the front-end modules, completes the data acquisition, and performs the digital signal processing (DSP) for the DOA estimation. The system has an average DOA resolution of 90° in the horizontal plane, with a success rate higher than 90%. It is presented as an educational platform for electrical engineering undergraduate and M.S. degree students.

      Abstract: A circular conformal array antenna (CAA) with beamsteering capabilities as well as omnidirectional performance at 3.5 GHz (S-band) is presented. The single radiating elements are formed by double-stacked microstrip patches placed on the planar faces of an octagonal holding structure fabricated with a 3D printer. An eight-way tunable feeding network (TFN) is designed, manufactured, and integrated into the conformal structure to excite the array elements. Novel tunable T-junctions (TTs) based on p-i-n diodes are proposed to form the TFN in microstrip technology. This novel T-junction allows a splitting configuration with uniform distribution to the two output ports or a switching mode to deliver the signal to either output port. In all T-junction operation modes, good input matching performance is achieved. The TFN network is integrated into the conformal antenna and digitally controlled by a microcontroller Arduino MEGA. A total of 29 states grouped in six modes with a global matching bandwidth of 17.2% can be selected. The omnidirectional radiation and beamsteered directional patterns (covering 360°) can be electronically tuned. The proposed antenna is suitable for future 5G terrestrial communications in the 3.5-GHz International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT) range, the primary candidate band for the first 5G networks.
