  • A Distributed Computing Real-Time Safety System of Collaborative Robot

      Abstract: Robotization has become common in modern factories due to its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Lots of robots and manipulators share their workspaces with humans what could lead to hazardous situations causing health damage or even death. This article presents a real-time safety system applying the distributed computing paradigm for a collaborative robot. The system consists of detection/sensing modules connected with a server working as decision-making system. Each configurable sensing module pre-processes vision information and then sends to the server the images cropped to new objects extracted from a background. After identifying persons from the images, the decision-making system sends a request to the robot to perform pre-defined action. In the proposed solution, there are indicated three safety zones defined by three different actions on a robot motion. As identification method, state-of-the-art of Machine Learning algorithms, the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG), Viola-Jones, and You Only Look Once (YOLO), have been examined and presented. The industrial environment tests indicated that YOLOv3 algorithm outperformed other solutions in terms of identification capabilities, false positive rate and maximum latency.

  • Optimization of Threshing Quality Control Strategy Based on Type-2 Fuzzy
           Logic Controller

      Abstract: At present, loss rate and grain damage are the most complicated problems for combine harvester. Besides, existing controllers that control threshing quality do not take into account environmental noise, data fluctuations, and other detection factors. In this paper, considering the interference of uncertain factors, a control strategy with low crashed rate and reduced loss rate using type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is proposed. This control strategy takes threshing separation component as a research object and adopts combination of theory with experimental analysis. Firstly, basic data acquisition experiment of threshing system is designed. Secondly, a control strategy is established by adequately previous filled test data. In the process of control strategy design, Fuzzy Logic Toolbox evaluates the performance of type-2 FLC. Integral of Square Error (ISE) and Integral of the Absolute value of the Error (IAE) show a better performance of type-2 FLC than of type-1 FLC. At last, field experiments are designed to verify the effectiveness of type-2 control strategy. The field test shows that the maximum reduction of grain damage rate and loss rate can reach to 44.08 % and 29.6 %. Experiment results show that the type-2 FLC can significantly reduce loss rate, crashed rate, and improve threshing quality.

  • State Estimation with Reduced-Order Observer and Adaptive-LQR Control of
           Time Varying Linear System

      Abstract: In this study, a new controller design was created to increase the control performance of a variable loaded time varying linear system. For this purpose, a state estimation with reduced order observer and adaptive-LQR (Linear–Quadratic Regulator) control structure was offered. Initially, to estimate the states of the system, a reduced-order observer was designed and used with LQR control method that is one of the optimal control techniques in the servo system with initial load. Subsequently, a Lyapunov-based adaptation mechanism was added to the LQR control to provide optimal control for varying loads as a new approach in design. Thus, it was aimed to eliminate the variable load effects and to increase the stability of the system. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a variable loaded rotary servo system was modelled as a time-varying linear system and used in simulations in Matlab-Simulink environment. Based on the simulation results and performance measurements, it was observed that the proposed method increases the system performance and stability by minimizing variable load effect.

  • Reliable Low-Cost Air Quality Monitoring Using Off-The-Shelf Sensors and
           Statistical Calibration

      Abstract: Modern cities are densely populated spaces and number of people living in cities is increasing rapidly by years. The air monitoring stations exist in most of the cities to monitor air pollution. However, their number is insufficient having in mind the high cost of stations, as well as annual calibration cost. The potential solution is to use low-cost off-the-shelf sensors to monitor related air quality parameters, but they are not reliable due to the low accuracy, calibration issues, and short life cycle. In this paper, the methodology is proposed for calibration off-the-shelf air quality sensors using statistical algorithms and offset values from the official public measurement stations. The possibilities are analysed to improve the reliability of low-cost sensors by processing the obtained raw data. Special attention is devoted to the detection and elimination of short intervals when the raw results have the extraordinary high value-peaks and to the corresponding interpolation of these data. New algorithm for “peaks” detection and elimination is proposed and evaluated. Common Air Quality Index (CAQI) is calculated and evaluated in comparison with public monitoring station. It is shown that low-cost sensors could be used with high reliability as a complementary network to public monitoring stations.

  • Integer- and Fractional-Order VCO Using Non-Inertial Amplitude
           Stabilization and Modern Active Elements

      Abstract: This paper introduces design of the linearly tunable quadrature voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using modern off-the-shelf active elements suitable for the design of electronically adjustable applications. The simplified topology was achieved using non-inertial stabilization of amplitude. It allows targeting adjustability of the oscillation frequency only into lossless integrator part of the topology. This arrangement simplifies the design and the tenability also. Derived symbolical expressions indicate that gain adjustment of used amplifiers (that are still in single path) does not influence amplitude and phase shift ratio of generated waveforms, which is a beneficial feature. The performances of the circuit are tested experimentally in band of units of MHz and results confirmed expected behavior. Initial study of the oscillator with fractional-order capacitors is presented and discussed. Results are supported by laboratory measurements.

  • Electro-Thermal Modelling and Experimental Verification of Power
           Semiconductor Diode

      Abstract: The aim of the proposed paper is discussing problematics related to the thermal modelling of power electronic components. More in detail, the electro-thermal relationship is investigated for the selected power diode, while analysis shall serve for system optimization considering thermal performance with the use of highly accurate 3D simulation model. The presented approach describes the procedure of the simulation model development, whereby the main part is discussing necessities relevant for material property identification through the indirect procedure, i.e, material properties are not known from the manufacturer. Electro-thermal dependencies are defined within the proposed model, while this model enables parametric changes of the geometrical properties of the device. Added value of this procedure is the possibility of its use in exact determination of the lifetime of a semiconductor component using mathematical models taking into account operational variables (current, voltage, temperature, etc.). The proposed model is verified and validated through thermovision experimental measurements within defined operational conditions.

      Abstract: The devices for monitoring biological variables have become a hot topic in the last years. An important aspect in the design of these wearable devices is the continuous communication, as well as the associated energy consumption. As a result, the concept of flash monitoring has been recently coined. This implies that the reading of the variables is not made in a continuous manner, but the values are stored on the sensor electronics for a while and then retrieved altogether to the reader. This concept reduces the energy consumption since there is no continuous communication, and this feature is, therefore, beneficial in certain contexts. However, the communication is sometimes required to be continuous, so that solutions based on continuous communication or alarms can be implemented. This work shows a technological development that allows converting a biological variable reading system based on flash monitoring into a continuous one. The details of the electronic development of the components are shown, and the software structure integrated in the microcontroller is discussed. The system devoted to the management and remote acquisition of the data is shown as well. As an example, the performance of the system is shown in two different contexts: with a flash biopatch for the body temperature monitoring designed in the laboratory and with a commercially available flash interstitial glucose monitoring system.

  • Measurement of Event-Related Brain Potentials (ERP) Amplitude and Latency

      Abstract: In this paper, the measurement of event-related brain potentials (ERP) amplitude and latency based on digital stochastic measurement over interval (DSMI) method are described. Different variations of the measurement system are considered. It was found that measurement errors of amplitude increase with the reduction of the examination time. However, the measurement errors for ERP peak latency remain relatively small. This makes the system useful for practical implementations when the latency is the most interesting parameter and requirements for a short measurement time are of high priority.

  • Graphic Library Optimization for MIPS Architecture

      Abstract: The aim of this paper and research was to analyse the efficiency of the compiler-generated code for the graphics library and to present results obtained by optimization for the MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) architecture. Libpng is the official Portable Network Graphics reference library for use in applications that read, create, and manipulate PNG (Portable Network Graphics) raster image files. Given the data structure in the PNG files, as well as the capabilities of the MIPS instruction set, it was expected that significant improvements could be made. Graphic library libpng is optimized by using MIPS instruction set extension and tested on MIPS Malta 74K platform. Test results show, that by using MIPS optimization test, execution times are substantially improved. Our libpng optimization have achieved performance increase of 10 %–78 % depending on optimized routine.

  • Virtual Network Construction Technique, Treating All VPNs Simultaneously

      Abstract: In the paper, a new construction technique for virtual network (e.g., Virtual Private Network (VPN)) based on flow permutation algorithm is proposed. In existing methods for creating virtual networks, whereby virtual networks are constructed one by one in time and the new virtual network can use only the remaining resources, it could be non-optimal. Our approach treats all traffic flows simultaneously and is capable of balancing the network much better than other existing techniques. As we show, the proposed new construction technique work well, even in the condition of hard loaded networks operating on the edge of capacity, i.e., in situations when traditional techniques could cause unbalanced network and significant congestion problems. For huge number of traffic flows, heuristic algorithm, whose complexity rises linearly, is evaluated.

  • Comparison of Dispersion Compensation Techniques for Real-Time up to 160
           Gbit/s DWDM C-Band Transmission

      Abstract: The exponential growth of data traffic related to the progress of newest technologies (e.g., 4K/8K live stream videos, virtual reality (VR) applications, etc.), new services, and a fast-growing number of end-users require higher bandwidth and increase of user bitrate, as a result pushing hard the telecommunication infrastructure for upgrading. Expected usage of more complex modulation formats in fiber optical link infrastructure for cellular network transmission and data center interconnections (DCI) are still affected with fundamental chromatic dispersion influence on the signal quality, which consequently increases bit error rate (BER). We experimentally demonstrate a real-time comparison of commercially used dispersion compensation techniques for 100 GHz spaced dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) optical transmission system with a total transmission speed capacity of 160 Gbit/s.
