  • Microgrids interconnection to upstream AC grid using a dual-function fault
           current limiter and power flow controller: principle and test results

    • Abstract: This study presents a novel magnetic-based solid-state dual-function fault current limiter and power flow controller (FLPFC) that offers a promising application for safe and controllable interconnection of microgrids to upstream AC grids. The proposed structure includes series reactors and power electronic switches that protects microgrid from upstream AC grid short-circuit fault and it controls the power flow between microgrid and upstream grid. Performance of the proposed FLPFC is analysed and simulated using Matlab/Simulink and results are confirmed by experimental tests.

  • Electric spring controller design for distribution network loaded by
           electric vehicles

    • Abstract: Although electric vehicles (EVs) offer a viable mean of commuting, their widespread penetration can have adverse effects on the current electrical distribution networks due to voltage drop and overloading of distribution transformers. In this work, a novel control scheme is proposed and implemented to support the voltage profile of a typical distribution network loaded by EVs. Electric spring (ES), a real/reactive power compensator, is driven by the proposed controller to provide voltage support under dynamic loading conditions. In the proposed scheme, the ES reference voltage is continuously determined and then compared with its instantaneous output voltage in a closed-loop configuration. The proposed controller is tested under various loading conditions both through simulations and digital implementation in the hardware-in-the-loop configuration to evaluate its overall performance. Results show that ES equipped with the proposed controller can be successfully used to fix the problem of the voltage drop caused by the sudden and simultaneous charging of EVs.

  • Guidelines for required grid-supportive functions in grid-tied inverters
           with distributed energy resources

    • Abstract: Grid-tied inverters have become required to equip the function that supports electrical grids stable. So-called ‘smart inverters’ have also been shown to provide load distribution under steady state. Similarly, other types of advanced inverters that contribute to transient grid stability have recently attracted attention. Combining a battery with an inverter not only enables the use of renewable energy (RE) regardless of time or season but also increases the system inertial and synchronising forces due to its high responsiveness. However, the use of these grid-supportive features in inverters is commonly not disclosed by manufacturers; thus, a system administrator must uniformly regulate and verify the effects. Although the requirements for smart inverters' are being established, those for advanced inverters with transient contributions have not yet been formulated. Furthermore, these requirements must confirm the transient-supportive functions regardless of the inverter control method. Therefore, this work proposes a set of guidelines for establishing these requirements based on stabilisation/disturbance theory. Furthermore, it was confirmed by simulation that inverter control satisfying these requirements can be realised, for example, by a control method that simulates a virtual inertial force.

  • Position sensorless control of switched reluctance motor based on a linear
           inductance model with variable coefficients

    • Abstract: To solve the problem of inaccurate position estimation due to the influence of magnetic saturation in sensorless control of switched reluctance motor (SRM), a new position estimation method is proposed. By analysing the linearity of the inductance curve, the region with better linearity can be found. Then, in this region, the mathematical model between rotor position and inductance can be built to estimate the rotor position by the linear fitting. However, the inductance curve will shift due to the influence of magnetic saturation in the case of heavy load, which makes the estimation error larger. Therefore, this study carries out a linear fitting of this region under different loads and establishes a linear inductance model with variable coefficient. This method can effectively eliminate the influence of saturation inductance on position estimation and have better estimation accuracy. Simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed method.

  • Iterated extended Kalman filter-based grid synchronisation control of a PV

    • Abstract: A new control scheme employing the Iterated Extended Kalman Filtering (IEKF) algorithm for synchronization of a PV system with a three-phase grid is proposed. IEKF accurately estimates the fundamental sinusoidal component of the distorted voltage signals at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) and the current signal of the load. The Kalman gain is updated through the minimization of the estimation error covariance yielding accurate estimation of the fundamental component of the aforementioned voltage and current signals. IEKF uses an iterative loop to reduce the mean square error and also increases the convergence speed. The proposed IEKF-PI control scheme is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink first and then it is realised on a prototype of a single stage grid connected PV system developed in the laboratory. From the results obtained from both the simulation and experimental studies, it is concluded that after compensation, the grid current reaches the steady state faster using IEKF-PI than using EKF-PI and STF-PI. The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the grid current is compensated to a lowest value of 3.5% using the proposed IEKF-PI control scheme than that obtained using both EKF-PI and STF-PI, despite distortion of PCC voltage and PCC voltage sag and swell condition.

  • A hybrid active load and ideal synchronous condenser-based model for
           STATCOM applied to power flow studies

    • Abstract: This study proposes a generalised STATCOM model employing active load and ideal synchronous condenser representation and its related power flow solution. The proposed method considers the effects of DC side voltage, internal switching losses, and operation mode on the power flow problem. To such aim, the proposed model tackles with a tap changing transformer accompanied by a variable conductance at the DC side in order to model the switching losses. This model can also take into account voltage regulation, reactive power control as well as amplitude modulation ratio and practical limitations. It is worth noting that the proposed model can be easily used for power flow studies by applying ordinary changes to the prevalent Newton–Raphson-based power flow methods. The introduced model is applied to two test systems including IEEE 14-Bus system, followed by a discussion on results.

  • Power flow calculation based on local controller impedance features for
           the AC microgrid with distributed generations

    • Abstract: In AC microgrid, since the impedance features of the power electronic converter are not considered, the accuracy of power flow calculation is degraded. Thus, this study, firstly presents a power flow calculation approach based on local controller impedance features for the AC microgrid consisting of numerous distributed generations. Firstly, the source-side equivalent output impedance matrix of the converter is estimated by small-signal perturbation approach and the equivalent transformation among the dq axis, α β axis and abc axis. Then, the bus–bus line impedance model is proposed by converting the bus line equivalent impedance model. Moreover, the equivalent impedance model is embedded into Jacobian matrix iterative process to improve the accuracy of the power flow calculation approach. Eventually, the power flow calculation based on local controller impedance features is simulated by IEEE 4-bus MATLAB/Simulink test system, PG&E 69-bus test system and IEEE 118-bus test system, indicating that the proposed power flow calculation approach is more accurate.

  • Comprehensive review of VPPs planning, operation and scheduling
           considering the uncertainties related to renewable energy sources

    • Abstract: The penetration of renewable energies in the energy market has increased significantly over the last two decades due to environmental concerns and clean energy requirements. The principal advantage of renewable energy resources (RESs) over non-RESs is that it has no direct carbonisation impact on the environment and that it has none of the global warming effects which are caused by carbon emissions. Furthermore, the liberalisation of the energy market has led to the realisation of the virtual power plant (VPP) concept. A VPP is a unified platform for distributed energy resources that integrates the capacities of various renewable energies together for the purpose of improving power generation and management as well as catering for the buying and selling of energy in wholesale energy markets. This review study presents a comprehensive review of existing approaches to planning, operation and scheduling of the VPP system. The methodologies that were adopted, their advantages and disadvantages are assessed in detail in order to benefit new entrants in the power system and provide them with comprehensive knowledge, techniques and understanding of the VPP concept.

  • Analysis of integrated energy-load characteristics based on sparse
           clustering and compressed sensing

    • Abstract: An integrated energy system not only provides a platform for multi-energy coupling utilisation but also satisfies users' diversified energy demands. However, in view of the enormous amount of integrated energy data and the difficulty of analysing the characteristics of that data, an integrated energy-analysis method based on sparse clustering and compressed sensing is proposed in this study. This method uses the fuzzy c-means algorithm to construct an over-complete dictionary and then compresses, collects, and reconstructs the integrated energy data using the compressed sensing theory method. This process analyses integrated energy-load characteristics accurately and also solves the problem of low data-transmission efficiency. Simulation results show that the method is suitable for analysing and processing integrated load data in integrated energy systems.

  • Reliability modeling for Integrated Community Energy System considering
           dynamic process of thermal loads

    • Abstract: The Integrated Community Energy System (ICES) has developed rapidly, but the reliability assessment models of ICES are somehow out of date. A new reliability assessment model for ICES is proposed incorporating electricity, gas and heat, considering dynamic process of thermal loads. First, the static model of ICES consisting of three subsystems is constructed based on the energy hub model. Then the inertial features of loads are incorporated in the reliability of ICES. Thereafter, a quasi-sequential simulation based on a decomposed optimisation method is proposed to assess the reliability of ICES. Case studies are conducted on an ICES with four energy hubs to validate the performance of the presented model. Results show that the proposed reliability assessment model is more practical and the identified weak points of each subsystem have changed after utilising the new model.

  • Assessing the potential of surplus clean power in reducing GHG emissions

    • Abstract: This work assesses the potential of surplus electricity in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the building sector. The assessment is done by modelling the interaction of government and energy consumer using game theory. The government can provide discounted power to energy consumer by covering a fraction of the off-peak price to encourage the replacement of natural gas consumption with electricity. This replacement reduces GHG emissions from the building sector. Energy consumer adopts electricity-based technologies only if it leads to a lower heat and electricity supply cost. Cost-effectiveness of solid oxide fuel cell, air–source heat pump (ASHP), and battery and hydrogen storage are assessed as alternatives to natural gas combined heat and power (CHP) and boiler technologies. The modelling results show that ASHP is the only technology that can compete with natural gas CHP and boiler. ASHP is chosen by the energy consumer when discounts of 4.5 cents/kWh or more for off-peak electricity are available. The analysis also showed that CHP could be completely replaced by grid power at discount value of 4.5 cents/kWh and up. Natural gas boilers continue playing a role in building heating supply even under increased discount for off-peak electricity price.

  • Planning and operation of LV distribution networks: a comprehensive review

    • Abstract: The low-voltage (LV) distribution network is the last stage of the power network, which is connected directly to the end-user customers and supplies many dispersed small-scale loads. To achieve environmental targets and to address the energy shortage issue, governments worldwide increase the renewable energy sources (RESs) into the electricity grid. In addition, different types of low carbon technologies (LCTs) such as electric vehicles are becoming widely used. A significant portion of RES and LCTs is penetrated into the LV distribution network, which poses a wide range of challenges. To address these challenges, there is a persistent need to develop traditional planning and operation frameworks to cope with these new technologies. In this context, this study provides a comprehensive review of planning, operation, and management of LV distribution networks. The characteristics, types, and topologies of LV distribution networks plus different aspects of operation and planning are investigated. An insightful investigation of the reasons impacts and mitigation of voltage and current unbalanced in LV networks is provided. Moreover, the main three-phase power flow techniques used to analyse the LV networks are analysed.

  • Sizing of renewable energy based hybrid system for rural electrification
           using grey wolf optimisation approach

    • Abstract: The utilisation of renewable energy sources (RES) in increasing drastically because of various issues including depletion of fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and so on. As the power generated from RES is fluctuating in nature, therefore, the appropriate sizing of the hybrid model based on RES is utmost important. In this study, the grey wolf optimisation, a newly developed approach is used for the optimal sizing of the hybrid model. In this work, the optimal design of solar/biomass/biogas/battery-based hybrid system has been carried out to supply continuous electricity to various households of a cluster of villages of Haryana state of India. The results obtained from the proposed model have been compared with harmony search and particle swarm optimisation and found better.
