  • Machine learning based energy management system for grid disaster
           mitigation

    • Abstract: The recent increase in infiltration of distributed resources has challenged the traditional operation of power systems. Simultaneously, devastating effects of recent natural disasters have questioned the resilience of power infrastructure for an electricity dependent community. In this study, a solution has been presented in the form of a resilient smart grid network which utilises distributed energy resources (DERs) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to improve the power availability during disastrous events. In addition to power electronics with load categorisation features, the presented system utilises ML tools to use the information from neighbouring units and external sources to make complicated logical decisions directed towards providing power to critical loads at all times. Furthermore, the provided model encourages consideration of ML tools as a part of smart grid design process together with power electronics and controls, rather than as an additional feature.

  • Fully distributed AC power flow (ACPF) algorithm for distribution systems

    • Abstract: Power flow is one of the basic tools for system operation and control. Due to its nature, which determines the complex nodal voltages, line flows, currents and losses, it enforces a large computation load on a power system. A distributed/decentralised algorithm unburdens the central controller and shares the total computation load with all agents. Therefore, such algorithms are an effective method for dealing with power flow complexity. In this study, a distributed method based on a linearised AC power system is proposed. First, the linearisation procedure of a comprehensive non-linear AC power flow (ACPF) is detailed. Second, a distributed method is presented based upon the linear ACPF equations. Three case studies are presented to evaluate the overall performance of the proposed method. In the first case study, the accuracy level of both linearised ACPF and distributed ACPF is assessed. In the second case study, the dynamic performance of distributed ACPF is investigated based on the load sudden changes. In the third case study, the scalability of the proposed distributed ACPF is evaluated by applying it to a larger power system.

  • Validity index based improvisation in reproducibility of load profiling
           outcome

    • Abstract: Under competitive market environment, the knowledge of load variation and its behavioural aspect are essential for the survival of electric supply utility. Load profiling is a useful tool to acquire it, and k-means clustering is a crisp, robust and widely proposed method. However, the multiple runs of a k-means algorithm for the same problem do not result in a deterministic outcome because of its dependency on initialisation. This study proposes an improved k-means algorithm to reduce the stochasticity in the outcome. The methodology combines clustering and qualitative validation processes and extracts the best outcome based on several validity indices that take into account cohesion and separation. The external cluster validity indices are innovatively used for comparison of the proposed method with the k-means algorithm. If the same problem is repeatedly executed, the variation in the outcome is lesser as compared to the standard k-means algorithm, thus improving the repeatability and overall quality of the clustering. The 24 real-life data-sets of load patterns of distribution feeders of the Central Indian state discom have been used for the study. The results show that proposed methodology reduces the stochasticity in the outcome significantly.

  • Evaluating combination models of solar irradiance on inclined surfaces and
           forecasting photovoltaic power generation

    • Abstract: The traditional photovoltaic (PV) forecasting method depends on sufficient historical data (PV power station historical power generation data and numerical weather prediction meteorological data), which is not suitable for a newly built PV power plant. In order to calculate the PV array irradiance and to predict the PV power, a physical prediction approach based on solar irradiance on inclined surfaces is proposed. This method selects three decomposition models and four transposition models to be combined into 12 combination forecasting models. Furthermore, solar spectral response, incidence angle, and soiling factor are taken into account in the modified model. The results show that the methods combining the Liu–Jordan transposition model have higher forecasting accuracy under the different weather types. Among them, the Erbs + Liu–Jordan model predictions are the most accurate.

  • Improved secondary control for optimal total harmonic distortion
           compensation of parallel connected DGs in islanded microgrids

    • Abstract: This study proposes a two-layer hierarchical control to actualize optimal total harmonic distortion (THD) compensation in different buses of parallel-connected inverters in islanded microgrids which had not been studied so far. The proposed secondary layer is used to realize THD compensation of sensitive load bus (SLB) and make distributed generators (DGs) distribute the compensating efforts between them according to their rated capacity. It is noteworthy that improving THD at the SLB can lead to an increase in THD at local buses and/or DG terminals. Although the THD limitations of these buses are not as strict as the THD limitation of SLB, it is necessary to control them within their allowed range. This important problem is not well studied in the literature. A novel complementary part is designed and added to the secondary control to tune the compensation portion of each DG while the THD limitations in DG terminals and local buses are considered. The proposed method actualizes a multi-level voltage quality control in multi-bus islanded microgrids with parallel DGs through a simple yet effective solution. Furthermore, considering the DGs peak current limitation is added to the controller and a method for calculating this peak value is proposed.

  • Distributed coordination control of hybrid energy resources for power
           sharing in coupled hybrid DC/AC microgrid using paralleled IFCs/ILCs

    • Abstract: This study proposes flexible controllers for the interlinking converter (ILC) and interfacing converters (IFCs) used in coupled hybrid AC/DC microgrids (HMGs). Proposed controllers are specifically designed for the multiple stacked bidirectional DC–AC ILCs/IFCs based microgrid outlays, to omit the droop power flow and system stability issues. The ILC and IFC grid supportive converter controllers focus on the wide-spread AC/DC bus parameters control for both DC and AC bus voltage regulation and superfluous power sharing while operating in the grid forming and feeding modes. Proposed controllers minimise the need for the controller parameter tuning as opposed to the conventional controllers used in zonal HMG systems. This makes the system stable for a much wider operating conditions as opposed to the widely used higher-order PLL integrated PQ and dq0 control algorithms. The proposed HMG also integrates the centralised battery energy stack through bidirectional dual active bridge DC–DC converter for achieving the high-power transfer efficiency and omitting the isolation issues between medium-voltage and low-voltage DC buses. The HMG system performance is evaluated using the simulation studies for various strategical operational modes. Further, the proposed controllers have also been tested individually on experimental platform.

  • Comprehensive review of IDMs in DG systems

    • Abstract: Distributed generation (DG) offers solution to the ever increasing energy needs by generating energy at the consumer end, in most cases, by means of renewable energy sources. Islanding detection is an important aspect of interconnecting a DG to the utility. This study presents comprehensive review of various islanding detection techniques along with their relative advantages and disadvantages. A broad classification of islanding detection methods (IDMs) is laid out as classical methods, signal processing (SP)-based methods, and computational intelligence-based methods with a focus on SP-based methods and computational intelligence-based methods. The evolution of SP techniques used for islanding detection is presented along with the merits and shortcomings of each technique. Furthermore, the advent of computational intelligence methods based IDMs are discussed along with their merits and demerits. An insight into various islanding methods based on quantitative measures of performance indices such as detection time, detection accuracy, and efficiency are tabulated and presented. Finally, the prospective direction of research for IDMs is also presented.

  • Anti-windup compensator design for power system subjected to time-delay
           and actuator saturation

    • Abstract: In this study, a delay-dependent anti-windup compensator (AWC) is designed for supplementary damping control (SDC) of flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) device to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillations of the power system subjected to time-delay and actuator saturation. By employing global signal measurements, an SDC of FACTS device is designed without considering the effect of time-delay and actuator saturation to stabilise the power system using a robust output feedback controller with pole placement approach. Then, based on the generalised sector condition and Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, an add-on delay-dependent AWC is designed to mitigate the adverse effect of time-delay and actuator saturation non-linearity. For the design of delay-dependent AWC, sufficient conditions guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop power system are formulated in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). These conditions are cast into the LMI-based convex optimisation problem to compute the AWC gains. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, non-linear simulations were performed first using MATLAB/Simulink. Then, the authors implemented the proposed controller in real-time using the Opal-RT digital simulator. From the obtained results, it is observed that the proposed controller enhances the damping of inter-area oscillations by compensating the effect of time delay and actuator saturation.

  • Versatile decentralised control of the DC microgrid

    • Abstract: This study proposes a versatile decentralised control strategy for the direct current (DC) microgrid based on the DC bus signalling method. Performance of the proposed control strategy is investigated under various generation and load disturbances in both grid-connected and islanded operation modes of the DC microgrid. The studies are conducted using a realistic DC microgrid study system simulated in the PSCAD/EMTDC software. The study results indicate that the proposed control strategy: (i) effectively maintains the power balance in the DC microgrid, (ii) effectively limits the DC bus voltage deviations under large disturbances, (iii) improves stability and dynamic response, (iv) does not curtail renewable power generation unless it is necessary, (v) does not require excessively large grid-tied converter and battery energy storage systems, and (vi) enhances system reliability, flexibility, modularity, and expandability.

  • Fuel cell integrated unified power quality conditioner for voltage and
           current reparation in four-wire distribution grid

    • Abstract: Electrical and electronic devices, when exposed to one or more power quality problems, are prone to failure. This study aims to enhance the quality of power in three-phase four-wire distribution grid using fuel cell integrated unified power quality conditioner (FCI-UPQC). The proposed FCI-UPQC has a four-leg converter on the shunt side and three-leg converter on the series side. A combination of a synchronous reference frame and instantaneous reactive power theories is utilised to generate reference signals of the FCI-UPQC. Also, this study proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) controller to maintain the DC-link voltage in the FCI-UPQC. The ANFIS controller is designed like a Sugeno fuzzy architecture and trained offline using data from the proportional–integral controller. The obtained results proved that the proposed FCI-UPQC compensated power quality problems such as voltage sag, swell, harmonics, neutral current, source current imbalance in the three-phase four-wire distribution grid. The presence of fuel cell in this work makes more effectiveness of the proposed system by providing real power support during supply interruption on the grid side.

  • Unified power flow controllers in smart power systems: models, methods,
           and future research

    • Abstract: Power flow control has become increasingly important in recent years in the area of smart power systems that have to integrate increased shares of variable renewable energy sources. The unified power flow controller (UPFC) provides in real-time, simultaneously or selectively, active and reactive power flow control as well as voltage control in smart power systems. Several models and methods have been suggested for the control, analysis, operation, and planning of UPFCs in smart power systems. This study introduces a review of the state-of-the-art models and methods of UPFCs in smart power systems, analysing and classifying current and future research trends in this field.

  • Optimal distribution system restoration using PHEVs

    • Abstract: Power outages cost billions of dollars every year and jeopardise the lives of hospital patients. Traditionally, power distribution system takes a long time to recover after a major blackout, due to its top-down operation strategy. New technologies in modern distribution systems bring opportunities and challenges to distribution system restoration. As fast response energy resources, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) can accelerate the load pickup by compensating the imbalance between available generation and distribution system load. This study provides a bottom-up restoration strategy to use PHEVs for reliable load pickup and faster restoration process. The optimisation problem of finding load pickup sequence to maximise restored energy is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Moreover, the coordination between transmission and distribution restoration is developed to efficiently restore the entire system back to normal operating conditions. Simulation results on one 100-feeder test system demonstrate the efficiency of MILP-based restoration strategy and the benefit from PHEVs to restore more energy in given restoration time. The proposed restoration strategy has great potential to facilitate system operators to achieve efficient system restoration plans. It also provides incentives to deploy a large amount of PHEVs to improve system resiliency.

  • Potential impacts of emission control policy on the vehicle to grid
           environment: a novel approach

    • Abstract: Environmental conditions strained the existing transportation network to replace its conventional gasoline-based engines by electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce its share in pollution. EVs promise a potential solution, but they fail to motivate end users because of their inherent drawbacks. Utilisation of EVs in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) environment is expected to boost EVs penetration but will burden the conventional power generations for their energy demand. For improvement of the environmental conditions, it is likely that the authorities will come up with a strict emission control policy. This study demonstrates the effects of emission policy on the V2G environment. The proposed problem is modelled as a multi-objective optimisation problem. Non-dominated-sorting-based genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to solve this problem. This study also demonstrates a long-term impact analysis of a system consisting of a V2G market, end users and EVs by considering time variance in EVs penetration and vehicles' performance degradation. This analysis can help in planning and formulating the future V2G market.

  • Mode-based energy storage control approach for residential photovoltaic
           systems

    • Abstract: This study presents a novel mode-based energy storage control approach. Assuming that an energy storage device (ESD) is equipped with a set of predetermined real-time control modes, the dispatch objective is to select an optimal mode instead of a continuous charging or discharging power value. A two-stage algorithm is developed for mode selection. In the first stage, a sliding 24 h economic model predictive control algorithm is used to determine the power outputs of the ESD for the next 24 h. In the second stage, the output sign for the next time step determines the class of modes to be elected (charging or discharging). The information from the first stage is used to compute the total cost for each selected mode. The mode with the lowest day-ahead cost is chosen. The residential electricity consumption data collected in the PECAN Street Project is used in the simulation to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that using a mode-based approach reduces the sensitivity to forecasting errors along with load and solar variability. The algorithm performance is consistent across different load patterns.

  • Cooperative game theory approach for multi-objective home energy
           management with renewable energy integration

    • Abstract: This study proposes a mathematical model of an intelligent multi-objective home energy management (HEM) scheme with the integration of small-scale renewable energy sources. The main aim of the proposed model is to handle the residential load demand in a smart way to minimise both the consumer's energy bill and the system peak demand simultaneously. To generate the best compromise solution of the proposed multi-objective problem, a cooperative game theory approach is used in this study on the basis of super-criterion and a Pareto optimal solution concept. In the cooperative game process, each HEM objective is assigned as a player and every player tries to maximise their own payoff. Bargaining model in the form of super criterion is considered in this game approach. Finally, all players can get win–win nature with collective negotiations. Generally, HEM method deals with various controllable devices having distinct operating characteristics. Because of this, the proposed HEM problem is modelled as a mixed-integer problem. Consequently, a mixed-integer non-linear programming is applied in this game process to maximise the super-criterion. To show the effectiveness of the proposed model, different case studies and various scenarios are carried out.
