  • On Power Scalability of Modular Multilevel Converters: Increasing Current
           Ratings Through Branch Paralleling
    • Authors: Stefan Milovanovic;Drazen Dujic;
      Pages: 53 - 63
      Abstract: The modular multilevel converter (MMC) presented in Figure 1 found its place within highvoltage and medium-voltage (MV) applications owing to the possibility of effortlessly meeting the imposed voltage requirements by stacking the so-called submodules (SMs) in a series [1]. Therefore, high-quality voltage waveforms can be synthesized across the MMC ac terminals, while using the power devices of a lower voltage rating, resulting in a very modest or even no filtering requirement on the grid side. Depending on the application, the SMs are mainly half bridge (HB) or full bridge (FB), not including the other types of SMs reported in the literature [2]. According to Figure 1, a cluster of SMs in a series connection with an inductor Lbr will be referred to as the branch, whereas two branches comprise the leg.

           Power Technologies and Products: A Cancelled Conference Taps Alternate
           Methods to Disseminate Cutting-Edge Information
    • Authors: Ashok Bindra;
      Pages: 64 - 71
      Abstract: With the growing concerns of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the IEEE Power Electronics Society/Industrial Applications Society (PELS/IAS) and Power Supply Manufacturers Association-sponsored 2020 Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC 2020) in New Orleans, Louisiana, was cancelled for the safety of the attendees. While it was a difficult decision, the health, safety, and welfare of the community was paramount for the organizers and sponsors of the 15-19 March 2020 conference. Although this was the first such cancellation in APEC's 35-year history, the organizers were quick to offer a virtual conference to those registered. In addition, peerreviewed papers accepted by the conference committee were submitted to IEEE Xplore and are available to all.

  • Patent Applicant's Duty of Disclosure [Patent Reviews]
    • Authors: Art MacCord;
      Pages: 72 - 75
      Abstract: Reports on a patent applicant's Duty of Disclosure requirements. Specifically, this states that the invention must satisfy certain requirements to be granted a patent. Among them are that the invention, as claimed in a patent application, must not describe what is known in, or be obvious from, the prior art. Another important criterion is that the invention must not have been on sale (which includes offers that are not accepted) more than one year before the filing date of the patent application. What happens when an applicant knows there is information about one of these invalidating events but still wants to get a patent' A patent applicant may not hide that information but must bring it to the attention of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This requirement is referred to as the duty of disclosure and has been part of the U.S. patent law for decades. The duty is to disclose information that is material to the patentability of the invention. The definition of materiality has varied through time, but currently, information is material if a patent examiner would not allow a claim if he or she knew about the omitted facts.

  • Indium Corporation: Igniting an Electronics Materials Renaissance in
           Upstate New York [Company Profile]
    • Authors: Andy Mackie;
      Pages: 76 - 79
      Abstract: Profiles Indium Corporation. Igniting an electronics materials renaissance in Upstate New York round the world, glowing touchscreens, displays, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in our homes, mobile devices, and outdoor displays are examples of the ubiquity of indium as an element, whose atoms may well have passed through Indium Corporation manufacturing or recycling facilities on their way into our lives. Founded exclusively on the properties and applications of the element In49, Indium Corporation has expanded its capabilities over its 86 years of operation into a wide variety of materials, applications, and markets. Indium metal itself now represents only a small part of the company’s business. Over the decades, the organization has become a major materials supplier in areas as diverse as automotive, medical, mobile, and aerospace electronics; renewable energy; wall-size displays; lighting; and artificial intelligence.

  • Capacitive-Based Power Architectures Gain Ground [Expert View]
    • Authors: Stephen J. Allen;
      Pages: 80 - 81
      Abstract: In traditional single-stage power architecture, the inductor typically dominates the bill of materials, often occupying 50% of the total circuit area and dictating the solution height and footprint. Given that inductor size is dictated by switching frequency, most of the power industry has been focused on pushing switching frequencies higher and exploring alternative FET technologies such as gallium nitride (GaN) that promise much lower figures of merit (FOM). However, while GaN has made substantial inroads to high voltage applications such as off-line ac-dc inverters, it has yet to show any substantial performance improvements in low-voltage (< 60-V) applications.

  • Power Electronics in Renewable Energy Systems and Smart Grid: Technology
           and Applications [Book Review]
    • Authors: Marian P. Kazmierkowski;
      Pages: 94 - 94
      Abstract: This eighth book in the series of popular power electronics books authored/edited by Prof. Bimal K. Bose was released in June 2019 in the IEEE Press Series on Power Engineering. According to the author/editor, the idea for the book appeared after the publication of the special issue of Proceedings of the IEEE “Power Electronics in Smart Grid and Renewable Energy Systems” in November 2017. Prof. Bose managed to mobilize 19 outstanding specialists in the field of power electronics and energy systems from around the world, who presented current issues in the 12 chapters of the book. The authors of individual chapters systematically review the latest technologies and provide examples of applications to familiarize readers with problems and solutions of modern power electronics in renewable energy systems and intelligent networks. The excellent style of Prof. Bose is apparent as each chapter begins with a clear introduction and ends with a constructive conclusion. Moreover, each chapter contains an extensive list of publications and what should be emphasized—among them, the most up-to-date positions. Also, a list of abbreviations, biographies of contributors, and an index are included. This book is a valuable tool for graduate researchers, practicing engineers, and scientists working in the areas of renewable and distributed energy systems. It provides the needed technical background for each subject. Therefore, it is also suitable for senior undergraduate- and master’s-level students of electrical engineering and power system faculties interested in modern power electronic energy systems.
