  • Design and analysis of high birefringence and nonlinearity with small
           confinement loss photonic crystal fiber

      Abstract: High birefringence with low confinement loss photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has significant advantages in the field of sensing, dispersion compensation devices, nonlinear applications, and polarization filter. In this report, two different models of PCFs are presented and compared. Both the models contain five air holes rings with combination of circular and elliptical air holes arrangement. Moreover, the elliptical shaped air holes polarization and the third ring air holes rotational angle are varied. To examine different guiding characteristics, finite element method (FEM) with perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary condition is applied from 1.2 to 1.8 μm wavelength range. High birefringence, low confinement loss, high nonlinearity, and moderate dispersion values are successfully achieved in both the PCFs models. Numeric analysis shows that model-1 gives higher birefringence (2.75 × 10–2) and negative dispersion (–540.67 ps/(nm$km)) at 1.55 μm wavelength. However, model-2 gives more small confinement loss than model-1 at the same wavelength. In addition, the proposed design demonstrates the variation of rotation angle has great impact to enhance guiding properties especially the birefringence.

  • Terahertz wave generation from ring-Airy beam induced plasmas and remote
           detection by terahertz-radiationenhanced- emission-of-fluorescence: a
           review

      Abstract: With the increasing demands for remote spectroscopy in many fields ranging from homeland security to environmental monitoring, terahertz (THz) spectroscopy has drawn a significant amount of attention because of its capability to acquire chemical spectral signatures non-invasively. However, advanced THz remote sensing techniques are obstructed by quite a few factors, such as THz waves being strongly absorbed by water vapor in the ambient air, difficulty to generate intense broadband coherent THz source remotely, and hard to transmit THz waveform information remotely without losing the signal to noise ratio, etc. In this review, after introducing different THz air-photonics techniques to overcome the difficulties of THz remote sensing, we focus mainly on theoretical and experimental methods to improve THz generation and detection performance for the purpose of remote sensing through tailoring the generation and detection media, air-plasma. For the THz generation part, auto-focusing ring-Airy beam was introduced to enhance the THz wave generation yield from two-color laser induced air plasma. By artificially modulated exotic wave packets, it is exhibited that abruptly auto-focusing beam induced air-plasma can give an up to 5.3-time-enhanced THz wave pulse energy compared to normal Gaussian beam induced plasma under the same conditions. At the same time, a red shift on the THz emission spectrum is also observed. A simulation using an interference model to qualitatively describe these behaviors has be developed. For the THz detection part, the results of THz remote sensing at 30 m using THz-radiation-enhanced-emissionof- fluorescence (THz-REEF) technique are demonstrated, which greatly improved from the 10 m demonstration last reported. The THz-REEF technique in the counterpropagation geometry was explored, which is proved to be more practical for stand-off detections than copropagation geometry. We found that in the counterpropagating geometry the maximum amplitude of the REEF signal is comparable to that in the co-propagating case, whereas the time resolved REEF trace significantly changes. By performing the study with different plasmas, we observed that in the counter-propagating geometry the shape of the REEF trace depends strongly on the plasma length and electron density. A new theoretical model suggesting that the densest volume of the plasma does not contribute to the fluorescence enhancement is proposed to reproduce the experimental measurements. Our results further the understanding of the THz-plasma interaction and highlight the potential of THz-REEF technique in the plasma detection applications.

  • Development of optical-thermal coupled model for phosphor-converted LEDs

      Abstract: In this review, first, we discussed the effect of phosphor features on optical properties by the software simulation in detail. A combination of these parameters: phosphor material, phosphor particle size and particle distribution, phosphor layer concentration, phosphor layer thickness, geometry, and location of the phosphor layer, will result in the final optical performance of the phosphor layer. Secondly, we introduced how to improve light extraction efficiency with various proposed methods. Thirdly, we summarized the thermal models to predict the phosphor temperature and the junction temperature. To stabilize the optical performance of phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (PC-LEDs), much effort has been made to reduce the junction temperature of the LED chips. The phosphor temperature, a critical reliability concern for PC-LEDs, should be attracted academic interest. Finally, we summed up optical-thermal coupled model for phosphors and summarized future optical- thermal issues exploring the light quality for LEDs. We foresee that optical-thermal coupled model for PC-LEDs should be paid more attention in the future.

  • Efficient deep red phosphorescent OLEDs using 1,2,4- thiadiazole
           core-based novel bipolar host with low efficiency roll-off

      Abstract: A series of 1,2,4-thiadiazole core-based bipolar materials, 2,2'-(1,2,4-thiadiazole-3,5-diyl)bis(N,N-diphenylaniline) (o-TPATHZ), 3,3′-(1,2,4-thiadiazole-3,5- diyl)bis(N,N-diphenylaniline) (m-TPATHZ) and 4,4'- (1,2,4-thiadiazole-3,5-diyl)bis(N,N-diphenylaniline) (p- TPATHZ) were developed as the host matrixes for the deep red phosphorescent emitters tris(1-phenylisoqiunoline) iridium (Ir(piq)3) and [bis(2-methyldibenzo-[f,h]-quinoxaline) Ir(III)(acetylacetonate)] (Ir(MDQ)2(acac)). By systematic studying, we demonstrated that there are two types of charge-trapping effect within the emissive layers through adjusting the host-guest compatibility. And, it is revealed that a symmetric charge-trapping effect can contribute to realizing a stable charge-balance, which led to a mitigating efficiency roll-off at high current density. Consequently, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.2% was achieved by an optimized device with p-TPATHZ-Ir(piq)3 emissive layer. Remarkably, the EQE still remained as high as 15.7% at the high luminance of 1000 cd/m2.

  • A direct method to calculate second-order two-dimensional terahertz
           spectroscopy in frequency-domain based on classical theory

      Abstract: Previous theoretical researches on the twodimensional terahertz spectroscopy (2DTS), which are conducted via inefficiently time-consuming numerical simulation, deal with only single-mode system. To overcome the limitations, we derive a classical-theory-based analytical solution which is applicable to multi-modes system. Three typical weak sources of nonlinearities are introduced. The findings suggest that the analytical results correspond well with those obtained by the traditional numerical simulation. Thus the study provides a more efficient and practical method to directly calculate 2DTS, and, in a broader sense, sheds new light on the theory of 2DTS.

  • Temperature dependence simulation and characterization for InP/InGaAs
           avalanche photodiodes

      Abstract: Based on the newly proposed temperature dependent dead space model, the breakdown voltage and bandwidth of InP/InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD) have been investigated in the temperature range from -50°C to 100°C. It was demonstrated that our proposed model is consistent with the experimental results. Our work may provide a guidance to the design of APDs with controllably low temperature coefficient.

  • Ether chain functionalized fullerene derivatives as cathode interface
           materials for efficient organic solar cells

      Abstract: The electron transport layer (ETL) plays a crucial role on the electron injection and extraction, resulting in balanced charge transporting and reducing the interfacial energy barrier. The interface compatibility and electrical contact via employing appropriate buffer layer at the surface of hydrophobic organic active layer and hydrophilic inorganic electrode are also essential for charge collections. Herein, an ether chain functionalized fullerene derivatives [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyricacid-(3,5-bis (2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)-ethoxy)-phenyl)-methyl ester (C60-2EPM) was developed to modify zinc oxide (ZnO) in inverted structure organic solar cells (OSCs). The composited ZnO/C60-2EPM interface layer can help to overcome the low interface compatibility between ZnO and organic active layer. By introducing the C60-2EPM layer, the composited fullerene derivatives tune energy alignment and accelerated the electronic transfer, leading to increased photocurrent and power conversion efficiency (PCE) in the inverted OSCs. The PCE based on PTB7-Th: PC71BM was enhance from 8.11% on bare ZnO to 8.38% and 8.65% with increasing concentrations of 2.0 and 4.0 mg/mL, respectively. The fullerene derivatives C60-2EPM was also used as a third compound in P3HT:PC61BM blend to form ternary system, the devices with addition of C60-2EPM exhibited better values than the control device.

      Abstract: This work reports on a novel BiOI/WO3 composite photoanode, which was fabricated by depositing BiOI onto a WO3 nanoflake electrode through a electrodeposition method. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity of the BiOI/WO3 electrode for water splitting under visible-light irradiation was evaluated. The results show that the BiOI/WO3 photoanode achieved a photocurrent density of 1.21 mA·cm–2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which was higher than that of the bare WO3 nanoflake electrode (0.67 mA·cm–2). The enhanced PEC acticity of BiOI/WO3 for water splitting can be attributed to the expansion of light absorption range as well as the facilitated separation of photo-generated carriers.

      Abstract: A disorderly nanostructured CdSe nanoagglomerates (NAs) with tunable emission are synthesized in aqueous solution. Although the CdSe NAs have diameters of about 20 nm that are larger than the Bohr radius of the crystal bulk, they show size-dependent emission similar to the CdSe nanocrystals. The CdSe NAs represent a collective energy state based on Anderson localization.

  • Influence of cerium ions on thermal bleaching of photo-darkened
           ytterbium-doped fibers

      Abstract: We studied the influence of cerium (Ce) ions on photo-darkening (PD) behavior in ytterbium/aluminum (Yb/Al) co-doped silica fibers at room and elevated temperatures. Low levels of PD was observed for Ce codoped Yb/Al fiber. And the Yb/Al co-doped fiber was completely bleached at ∼600°C. The addition of Ce ions as co-dopant can significantly lower the initial recovery and complete bleaching temperatures. The complete recovery temperature is ∼450°C and ∼400°C for Yb/Al/Ce low fiber and Yb/Al/Ce high fiber respectively. More importantly, Ce co-doping in Yb/Al fiber also decreases the heat-induced loss.

  • Spectrally efficient single carrier 400G optical signal transmission

      Abstract: In this paper, the recent progress on spectrally efficient single carrier (SC) 400G optical signal transmission was summarized. By using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 64QAM, we can realize transmission distance over 10000, 6000 and 3000 km, respectively, with large area fiber and all-Raman amplification. To improve the system performance and generate high-order QAM, advanced digital signal processing algorithms such as probabilistic shaping and look-up table pre-distortion are employed to improve the transmission performance.

  • High fill factor over 82% enabled by a biguanide doping electron
           transporting layer in planar perovskite solar cells

      Abstract: N-type doping in electron transport materials is an effective way to improve the electron collection and enhance the performance of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, for the first time, an antibiotic and antimicrobial compound of 1-(o-Tolyl) biguanide (oTb) is used to dope the electron transport material of phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The oTb doping into the PCBM can increase the conductivity and reduce the work function of the PCBM. The oTb doping can significantly enhance the fill factor (FF) of the perovskite solar cells with the structure of glass/ITO/NiOx/MAPbI3/(oTb)PCBM/(PEIE)/Ag. For the cells without PEIE (polyethylenimine ethoxylated) coating, the oTb doping increases the FF from 0.57 to 0.73. S-shaped of the current density-voltage (J-V) characteristic under illumination is removed after the oTb doping. For the cells with PEIE coating between the (oTb)PCBM and Ag, the oTb doping increases the FF from 0.70 to 0.82. These results show the potential of the oTb as an n-dopant in the applications of perovskite solar cells.

  • Recent advances in solar cells and photo-electrochemical water splitting
           by scanning electrochemical microscopy

      Abstract: Investigation on the mechanism and kinetics of charge transfer at semiconductor/electrolyte interface is significant for improving the photoelectric conversion efficiency and developing novel and high-efficiency photovoltaic devices. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), as a powerful analytical technique, has a potential advantage of high spatial and temporal resolution. It has been expanded into a broad range of research fields since the first inception of SECM in 1989 by Bard groups, which includes biological, enzymes, corrosion, energy conversion and storage (such as solar cells, hydrogen and battery). Herein, we review the basic principles and the development of SECM, and chiefly introduce the recent advances of SECM investigation in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells including solar cells and PEC water splitting. These advances include rapid screening of photocatalysts/photoelectrodes, interfacial reaction kinetics and quantitation of reaction intermediates, which is significant for evaluating the performance, choosing catalysts and developing novel composite photoanodes and high efficiency devices. Finally, we briefly describe the development trends of SECM in energy research.

  • MIMO-WiMAX system incorporated with diverse transformation for 5G
           applications

      Abstract: Wireless systems and standards are now progressing toward the implementation of fifth generation (5G) to combat with an expected and explosive growth of demands of wireless services in future. Consequently, wireless interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology at its physical layer is being utilized for the uplink and downlink transmission to afford the high spectral efficiency in fading environments. However, the 5G implementation requires additional improvements to meet the futuristic stress. This work proposes an innovative solution that combines WiMAX system with multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology to meet the required elevated data rates as desired by the growing application needs of 5G. MIMO is capable to fulfil the vision of 5G to realize a huge number of base stations equipped with a large number of terminals to be served in the same time-frequency resource without severe inter-user interference. Furthermore, the proposed system is demonstrated incorporation with discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and fractional Fourier transforms (FrFTs) in the physical layer of the WiMAX system. The evaluated outcomes exemplify a considerable improvement in bit error rate (BER) performance in contrast with the earlier reported work.

  • Weakly-coupled mode division multiplexing over conventional multi-mode
           fiber with intensity modulation and direct detection

      Abstract: Multi-mode fiber (MMF) links are expected to greatly enhance capacity to cope with rapidly increasing data traffic in optical short-reach systems and networks. Recently, mode division multiplexing (MDM) over MMF has been proposed, in which different modes in MMF are utilized as spatial channels for data transmission. Strongly-coupled MDM techniques utilizing coherent detection and multiplex-input-multiplex-output (MIMO) digital signal processing (DSP) are complex and expensive for short-reach transmission. So the weakly-coupled approach by significantly suppressing mode coupling in the fiber and optical components has been proposed. In this way, the signals in each mode can be independently transmitted and received using conventional intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD). In this paper, we elaborate the key technologies to realize weakly-coupled MDM transmission over conventional MMF, including mode characteristic in MMF and weakly-coupled mode multiplexer/ demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX). We also present the up-to-date experimental results for weakly-coupled MDM transmission over conventional OM3 MMF. We show that weakly-coupled MDM scheme is promising for high-speed optical interconnections and bandwidth upgrade of already-deployed MMF links.

  • Design and fabrication of compact Ge-on-SOI coupling structure

      Abstract: In this paper, we have proposed and demonstrated a simple approach to fabricate vertical integrated structure for coupling between active germanium (Ge) waveguide and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide. The active Ge waveguide is sputtered after etching the underlying passive silicon (Si) waveguide. This method scuttles away from the difficulty involved in the waveguide fabrication by avoiding the etching process for the Ge waveguide, and thereby the waveguide quality is improved. The influences of the coupling structural parameters on the coupling loss are analyzed and discussed. The optimizing parameters are obtained for the fabrication. The minimal coupling loss is experimentally measured about 2.37 dB, and variation tendency of coupling loss against the structural parameters is consistent with the theoretical result. The proposed approach offers an effective path for vertical coupling between Ge and SOI optical components.

  • Single polarization photonic crystal fiber filter based on surface plasmon
           resonance

      Abstract: In this paper, we propose a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) polarization filter based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) characteristics. Gold nanowire is used as the active plasmonic material. Light into silica core becomes coupled to gold nanowire stimulating SPR. It splits light into two orthogonal (x-polarization and y-polarization) polarization in the second order of surface plasmon polarization. Numerical investigations of the proposed PCF filter is finite element method (FEM). By tuning the diameter of gold nanowire and shifting their position, the performance of the proposed PCF filter is inspected rigorously. Filtering of any polarization can be obtained by properly placing the metal wires. The maximum confinement loss of x-polarization is 692.25 dB/cm and y-polarization is 1.13 dB/cm offers at resonance position 1.42 μm. Such a confinement loss difference between two orthogonal polarizations makes PCF a talented candidate to filter devices. Consequently, the recommended PCF structure is useful for polarization device.

  • Proposal for CEP measurement based on terahertz air photonics

      Abstract: Single-shot carrier envelope phase (CEP) measurement is a challenge in the research field of ultrafast optics. We theoretically investigate how an intense terahertz pulse modulates second harmonic emission (SH) from a gas plasma induced by a few-cycle laser pulse (FCL). Results show that the modulation quantity of SH intensity has a cosinoidal dependence on the CEP of FCL pulses, based on which we propose a low energy, alloptical method for single-shot CEP measurements via using a known intense terahertz pulse. Moreover, we propose an experimental realization.

  • Progress on photochromic diarylethenes with aggregation induced emission

      Abstract: Among various photochromic compounds, diarylethenes (DAEs) have been widely studied and applied due to their excellent thermal bistability and fatigue resistance. Most researches are focused on the properties and applications of DAEs in solution. However, they meet the problem of fluorescence quenching at high concentration or at solid state which limits their performance in the practical applications. Fortunately, the DAE based photochromic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials do well in addressing this problem. This work here reviews the current research progress on the structures, properties and applications of the DAE based photochromic AIE materials and points out some existing problems so as to promote subsequent development of this field in the future.
