  • Trust enforcement in vehicular networks: challenges and opportunities

      Abstract: A major objective of vehicular networking is to improve road safety and travel convenience. The experience of individual vehicles on traffic conditions and travel situations can be shared with other vehicles for improving their route planning and driving decisions. Nevertheless, the frequent occurrence of adversary vehicles in the network is unavoidable. These vehicles may engage in various malicious activities affecting the overall network performance. To control and monitor effectively security threats in vehicular networks, an efficient trust management system should be employed to identify the trustworthiness of individual vehicles and detect malicious drivers. This study provides a review of the research efforts aimed at enabling trust in vehicular environments. The major challenges are highlighted, and an edge-based architecture is proposed as a supportive platform. Furthermore, existing models proposed for trust evaluation, aggregation, propagation and decision making are reviewed. Finally, the current directions to enforce trust in vehicular environments are highlighted.

  • Deployment model of wireless sensors having not similar sensing ranges on
           roads in framework of hybrid sensors and vehicular networks improve the
           road safety

      Abstract: Among of the main searching field, the coverage and the connectivity of wireless sensors networks (WSNs) on the roads. The purpose of this field is tried to find a deployment model of WSNs ensuring full coverage of the roads and allowing full connectivity between sensors while using a minimum number of sensors. This deployment model allows sharing of the data collated by the WSN with the vehicular ad hoc network. The collaboration between the two networks is called hybrid sensors and vehicular networks. This hybrid network has been created to improve the road safety. The first key of success of this network is the creation of a deployment model of sensors on roads.
      Authors ' article aims to create this deployment model. To make authors' deployment model closer as much as possible to the real environment, the authors have proposed a set of models and algorithms allowing assignment the sensors on the roads. These sensors have not similar sensing ranges, and their deployment has been made on roads having different geometric models. The results obtained prove the reliability of authors' deployment model.

  • Hybrid indoor location positioning system

      Abstract: Indoor location positioning techniques have experienced a significant growth in recent years. This work presents a hybrid indoor positioning system with fine and coarse modes. It utilises acoustic signals for fine positioning and received signal strength (RSS) for coarse location estimation. Acoustic positioning systems require a line-of-sight connection for accurate positioning which may not be available due to obstacles in indoor environments. A new solution is presented to overcome this problem using RSS as a reference to validate the line-of-sight connection. Moreover, a new digital signal processing algorithm using a matched filter is presented to enhance the system's robustness in indoor environments with low a signal-to-noise ratio.   • Detection of a recurrent static target using binary sensor networks

      Abstract: The authors address the problem of decentralised detection of a recurrent event produced by a static uncooperative target in a wireless network of spatially distributed sensors. The presence or absence of the target is determined by applying fusion rules on local binary decisions of individual sensors. Optimal fusion rules require complete statistical knowledge about local detection and false alarm probabilities; hence, in practice they are infeasible. Previous works, such as the counting rule test, scan statistics and the generalised likelihood ratio test, have suggested sub-optimal fusion rules based on the total number of detecting sensors. Neither method takes full advantage of the spatial or temporal correlation between adjacent sensors. In practice, the decisions of adjacent sensors are dependent both in space (as the target is static) and in time (as the event reoccurs). Herein, the authors propose an approach that capitalises on the temporal and spatial arrangement of the local decisions. Simulation examples demonstrate that the detection probability of the proposed spatio-temporal rule is significantly higher than that of the common methods, and also achieves a lower probability of false alarm. Moreover, real data results show that the proposed approach is robust to strong environmental noises.

  • Adaptive PSO with optimised firefly algorithms for secure cluster-based
           routing in wireless sensor networks

      Abstract: One of the important considerations in a sensor network is energy consumption. Cluster-based routing protocols are often proposed to reduce energy consumption. However, clusters are vulnerable due to malicious nodes. Malicious nodes inject fake messages to cluster-header, which increases communication overhead and energy consumption. Secure cluster-based routing is one of the most required solutions to consume more energy during data transmission. In this study, the authors propose a secure cluster-based routing protocol (SCBRP) that uses adaptive particle swarm optimisation (PSO) with optimised firefly algorithms during data transmission in a wireless sensor network. The objective of this study is to minimise energy consumption over an individual node to improve the whole network lifetime. The proposed SCBRP is based on the hexagonal sensor network architecture, and it is designed by three processes to include energy-efficient clustering, secure routing, and security verification. The performance of the proposed SCBRP is evaluated using NS-3, and it is estimated by different metrics such as encryption time, decryption time, energy consumption, packet drop rate, and network lifetime. The simulation results are compared with the previous approaches and finally, the authors' proposed SCBRP is proved that it obtained better performance than previous approaches.

  • Wireless sensor node deployment strategy for hilly terrains – a surface
           approximation based approach

      Abstract: Sensor deployment in a wireless sensor network (WSN) is a challenging task due to the high chance of occurrence of the error in the deployment process, which makes the network inefficient. Particularly in three-dimensional (3D) WSN, the ideal positioning of sensor nodes over the ground with precise coverage and connectivity is a very significant consideration in the deployment of sensors. Various models for 2D sensor deployment have been proposed to date, but in real-world scenarios, the target field (field of interest) is not always 2D flat surface and therefore a 2D deployment model cannot address the issue of deploying sensor nodes on uneven surfaces such as hilly terrains. In this paper, we presented a surface approximation-based sensor deployment using truncated octahedron (SASD-TO) to solve the problems of sensor deployment on an irregular surface. Using the B-Spline, a 3D model of the target surface is approximated and then a Truncated Octahedron is used to estimate the exact coordinates of a sensor node. A very decent coverage area as high as 98% on average, whereas at lowest 2% of the uncovered area and 8% of the superimposed area were observed.

  • Sensor network node scheduling for preserving coverage of wireless
           multimedia networks

      Abstract: Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are receiving increasing consideration in the deployment of unmanned surveillance systems for applications such as monitoring battle field and security surveillance. However, ensuring high levels of coverage of the monitored area and concurrently maximising the WMSN lifetime remains a challenging issue. The authors introduce a novel distributed algorithm in this study, for scheduling multimedia sensor nodes (MSNs) activity that maximises coverage and minimises energy consumption. The proposed activity scheduling algorithm incorporates an approach that enables each MSN in WMSN to efficiently extract its cover sets to ensure that the critical points are monitored, and thereby minimise and effectively balance the network energy utilisation. They introduce a new way to select the most suitable cover set of an MSN by assigning priority for each cover set based on the correlation of visual information from the camera observations. The efficacy of the proposed approach is studied through rigorous simulations. Their simulation work and results comparison with existing approaches demonstrate that their proposed scheme exceeds current results in terms of network lifetime, capture rate and percentages of dead and active nodes.

  • Optimising compressive sensing matrix using Chicken Swarm Optimisation
           algorithm

      Abstract: According to compressive sensing (CS) technique, the smaller the mutual coherence between CS matrix and transformer matrix (Φ and Ψ), the better the performance of CS matrix to reduce the reconstruction error. Generating CS matrix from any distribution may achieve low but not minimum mutual coherence. In this study, using Chicken Swarm Optimisation (CSO), we propose a new efficient CS matrix optimisation algorithm (CSMO-CSO) to optimise CS matrix by minimising the mutual coherence between Φ and Ψ. The proposed CSMO-CSO succeeds to minimise the coherence between CS matrix and transformer matrix which improves the CS matrix, and thereby minimise the reconstruction error. The simulation results show that the performance of proposed algorithm exceeds the baseline existing algorithm in terms of mutual coherence reduction and normalised mean square error reduction.

      Abstract: The design of an energy-efficient routing protocol is crucial for extending the life-time of limited energy-constrained wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To achieve this goal, the authors propose three proactive routing protocols; the first protocol is a circle zone stable election protocol (CZSEP). This protocol is a two-level heterogeneous energy protocol with a circle zone located at the centre of the network field and used to deploy the normal nodes and with advanced nodes that are randomly distributed around the circle zone. The performance of the proposed CZSEP was compared to that of the conventional ZSEP considering the same total initial energy. To further improve the performance of CZSEP, they propose the second protocol named as, CZSEP with helper nodes (CZSEP-HN) which is a three-level heterogeneous energy protocol. In CZSEP-HN, they add helper nodes in certain places in the network field to minimise the energy consumption in the considered network. Both CZSEP and CZSEP-HN can overcome the problem of large transmission distance between normal nodes and the base station (BS) and between cluster-heads and BS exists in conventional ZSEP. Finally, they propose the third protocol, which is a modified CZSEP-HN (MCZSEP-HN) to overcome the problem of energy consumption in CZSEP-HN. MCZSEP-HN is a four-level heterogeneous energy protocol with two circle zones one for normal nodes and the other for intermediate nodes. The obtained results showed that the MCZSEP-HN outperforms the other protocols in terms of life-time, throughput, stability and instability period and can reduce the energy consumption in WSNs.

  • Joint optimisation of radio and infrastructure resources for
           energy-efficient massive data storage in the mobile cloud over 5G HetNet

      Abstract: This study formulates the problem of radio resource and data transmission strategy in a dense HetNet enhanced with mobile cloud computing and mobile edge computing technologies as a combinatorial optimisation problem. An ant colony optimisation (ACO)-based energy-aware algorithm is proposed as solution approach, which consists of a data transmission management scheme and a physical resource blocks/bandwidth allocation scheme. Simulation results show that compared with baseline approaches [(greedy and data split multiple user equipment (UEs) algorithms]), the proposed ACO-based algorithm achieves: (i) about 99% of reduction in terms of transmission delay under varying data file sizes (resp. varying number of UEs in the network); (ii) about 99% of reduction in terms of transmission energy dissipated by an UE during transmission of a file under varying data file sizes (resp. varying number of UEs in the network); (iii) improved performance with an increase in the number of small base stations in the network, (iv) significant reduction in the energy transmitted (by the UE) during transmission of big data files to the cloud storage; and (v) some stability irrespective of the variation in network conditions such as increasing the number of active UEs or increasing the number of UEs in the network.
