  • Application of MEMS-based accelerometer wireless sensor systems for
           monitoring of blast-induced ground vibration and structural health: a
           review

      Abstract: Ubiquitous wireless sensor network (WSN) enables low-cost monitoring applications such as blast-induced ground vibration (BIGV) and structural health monitoring (SHM). In particular, monitoring and analysing the ambiguous BIGV waves are essential requisite to control and protect surrounding grievous damage structures. Similarly, improving health and longevity of structures using WSN is a new facet that owes to diminish the low-cost installation. Recent advances in WSNs are forging new prospects for sensors. A variety of intelligent sensors are integrated into the wireless system to monitor environmental, and health of civil infrastructures. Considering the current trends in the area of development of wireless monitoring prototypes, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) accelerometer sensors are widely prevalent owing to the small size and inexpensive. In general, BIGV waves are less intensity and low-frequency signals. Hence, it is essential to select an appropriate accelerometer to detect micro-vibration waves. The study exemplifies a summarised review of recently made MEMS-based accelerometer wireless systems for intelligent and reliable monitoring of BIGV and SHM since the last decade. This research effort focuses on the numerous adopted accelerometers and their characteristics such as sensitivity, noise density, measurement range, bandwidth, resolution, network topologies, and performance of designed systems to analyse the micro-vibration levels comprehensively.

  • LaGOON: a simple energy-aware routing protocol for wireless nano-sensor
           networks

      Abstract: Although nanoscale sensors provide valuable data at finer levels, their size limitations impose difficulties in designing nanoscale systems. The limitations in the hardware part of such systems consequentially affect the software part too. Routing, being one of the main functions of the communication software of nano-sensors, it requires customised design, where constraints such as the energy efficiency have to be considered. Knowing that communication is the most energy consuming operation for the sensor networks, in general, the importance of routing protocol becomes clear. With this motivation, the existing routing protocols for the wireless nano-sensor networks are reviewed. The presentation of the classification and comparison of the existing protocols, followed by the discussion on the proposed simple energy-aware routing protocol based on the `backward-learning' paradigm. Simulations are carried out in ns-3 by using Nano-Sim package. Results are listed to show the efficiency of the proposed method in terms of energy use and the packet statistics.

  • SAPIL: single access point based indoor localisation using Wi-Fi L-shaped
           antenna array

      Abstract: Single access point (AP) based indoor localisation (SAPIL) has attracted much attention recently. Most of the existing SAPIL systems require frequency hopping, which cannot be easily achieved in commercial APs. In response to this compelling problem, the authors proposed the SAPIL using Wi-Fi L-shaped antenna array without modifying the existing Wi-Fi protocol. Specifically, the scenario in which the target is located is determined based on the maximum weight firstly. If the target is located in the line-of-sight scenario, the angle-of-arrival (AoA) corresponding to direct path is identified from the AoAs of multipath signals which are estimated using the smooth multiple signal classification algorithm. Meanwhile, the adaptive signal propagation model trained from the channel impulse response in offline phase is adopted to calculate the distance of direct path. Then the target is located by the estimated AoA and distance of direct path. Otherwise the target is located by combining its speed and heading with pedestrian dead reckoning. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves the median AoA estimation error of 5°, median distance estimation error of 0.5 m, and median localisation error of 1.8 m.

  • Fuzzy inference system based 3D geographic routing in wireless sensor
           networks

      Abstract: The 3D geographic routing in mobile wireless sensor networks (MWSNs) is gaining importance because of its simplicity, effectiveness, scalability and low cost. This study proposes a 3D geographic routing for multimedia traffic in MWSNs where the node which captures/senses an event establishes the route to the sink. If distance of an event node (source node) to the sink is within the sensing range, then the event data is transmitted to the sink. Otherwise, event node broadcasts bandwidth requirement to nodes. The surrounding nodes reply with bandwidth availability which is computed using fuzzy inference system situated in the node. The reply also comprises of node's residual energy and its distance to the sink. Event node identifies neighbour nodes which can provide the required bandwidth. The event node then selects the forwarder node from the list of neighbour nodes based on their residual energy and distance to the sink using another fuzzy inference system. The selected forwarder node becomes the source node and the process is repeated until one of the forwarder node finds the sink as neighbour. The algorithm is compared with dynamic 3D fuzzy routing based on traffic probability algorithm and novel fuzzy clustering scheme to demonstrate the improved performance.

  • Load aware energy-balanced data gathering approach in CRSNs

      Abstract: Cognitive radio sensor network (CRSN) is a combination of two different prominent technologies named as wireless sensor network (WSN) and CR network (CRN). There are different related issues of two different technologies such as energy and hardware for WSN and dynamic spectrum for CRN. CRSN constitutes the research challenges in designing efficient communication protocol in resource constraints network. So, energy-balanced transmission is necessary to prolong the lifetime of WSNs. It ensures uniform average energy consumption among all the nodes. Data gathering approach in traditional sensor network suffers uncontrolled interference in the unlicenced spectrums as these spectrums are gradually getting crowded. CRSN network can provide a solution to spectrum scarcity in unlicenced channels. This study proposes a load aware energy balancing approach to maximise the network lifetime. It also proposes a dynamic channel sensing and accessing algorithm to optimise the energy consumption when the quality of unlicenced spectrum deteriorates. Once the event gets detected, the proposed routing protocol's objective is to transmit the data through energy-efficient path from source to destination. Its performance is evaluated through extensive simulations. Simulation results demonstrate a significant improvement over closely related works.

  • Viewing sector optimisation for indoor localisation using multi-lateration
           with unilateral nodes deployment

      Abstract: Viewing sector optimisation allows reaching a maximum available localisation accuracy in indoor environments using optimal estimators. In this study, the authors provide such an optimisation for multi-lateration by employing the unbiased finite impulse response (UFIR) filtering technique, which ignores noise and initial values. The authors consider the unilateral deployment of anchor nodes and show, both theoretically and experimentally, that the optimal angle of arrival is zero, optimal viewing angle is $pi /2$π/2, acceptable viewing angle ranges as $pi /4 ldots 3pi /4$π/4…3π/4 and nodes density k increases the localisation accuracy as a reciprocal of the root square of k. Experimental verification is provided using the ultra-wide band indoor precise localisation technology, in which the distance is measured via the time of arrival.

  • Low-complexity wireless sensor system for partial discharge localisation

      Abstract: This study describes a key element of any modern wireless sensor system: data processing. The authors describe a system consisting of a wireless sensor network and an algorithmic software for condition-based monitoring of electrical plant in a live substation. Specifically, the aim is to monitor for the presence of partial discharge (PD) using a matrix of inexpensive radio sensors with limited processing capability. A low-complexity fingerprinting technique is proposed, given that the sensor nodes to be deployed will be highly constrained in terms of processing power, memory and battery life. Two variants of artificial neural network (ANN) learning models (multilayer perceptron and generalised regression neural network) that use regression as a form of function approximation are developed and their performance compared to K-nearest neighbour and weighted K-nearest neighbour models. The results indicate that the ANN models yield superior performance in terms of robustness against noise and may be particularly suited for PD localisation.
