  • Cross-layer routing protocol for event-driven M2M communication in
           IoT-assisted Smart City Planning and Management: CWSN-eSCPM

      Abstract: The robustness of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has broadened the use of wireless communication systems for modern machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. Internet-of-Things (IoT) being one of the most explored technologies has gained wide attention due to low-cost WSN communication systems. IoT is one of the dominant technologies used in Smart City implementation demands better communication paradigm including mobility assisted transmission paradigms; however, native IEEE 802.15.4 standard does not have mobility provision that limits its use for real-time applications. On contrary, implementing mobility with classical WSN might impose significantly great topological changes and node or network condition variations which cannot be dealt with the traditional reactive routing approach. Incorporating node and/or network awareness with proactive network management can enable classical WSN to support mobility, which can be vital for IoT based Smart City Planning and Management (SCPM). With this motivation, in this study, a robust Cross-Layer Architecture based WSN Routing Protocol for Event-Driven M2M Communication in SCPM (CWSN-eSCPM) is developed. CWSN-eSCPM encompasses Proactive Node Management Strategy, Data-Centric Service Differentiation and Fair Resource Scheduling (DCSDFRS), Packet Velocity Estimation, Cumulative Congestion Estimation, Dynamic Link Assessment that enables optimal Best Forwarding Node selection for deadline sensitive and reliable data communication. CWSN-eSCPM applies dynamic link quality, cumulative congestion degree, and packet velocity of a node to enable optimal routing decision. DCSDFRS enables optimal resource provision to the real-time data while assuring maximum possible resource for non-real-time data that assures Quality of Service provision for event-driven critical communication in SCPM. Noticeably, CWSN-eSCPM protocol has been applied on top of IEEE 802.15.4 protocol standard, while preserving backward compatibility fea-ure, it can be used for WSN assisted communication purposes. The authors’ proposed protocol has performed better in terms of packet delivery ratio, packet loss ratio and deadline miss ratio for both real-time data as well as non-real-time data.

  • Optimising energy in distributed phenomena detection for mobile WSN

      Abstract: We propose an energy-aware distributed scheme, general phenomena detection, to detect phenomena in data gathered from mobile sensors. In the proposed algorithm, mobile sensors self-organise themselves into groups and elect group heads (GHs) based on the location of the phenomena. To better share, the extra battery power overhead, GHs and subsequently group membership are updated periodically (every window). Each GH gathers readings from sensors within its group and processes the data to detect possible phenomena within its geographical boundaries. Then, GHs communicate with each other to discover and report global phenomena. To further reduce the energy cost, the study proposes three optimisation strategies: the first strategy, reporting by partial participation (RPP), limits the number of participating GHs in reporting the phenomena. RPP achieved a saving in the energy cost of around 50%. The second strategy, reporting by Z-order (RZO), provides an overall short communication path between GHs by using Z-order. RZO achieved a saving of more than 35% of the required energy. The study also proposes a lazy window update strategy that is suitable for a wireless sensor network (WSN) with slow sensor speed. The proposed solutions are validated via comprehensive experiments performed on an NS2 network simulator.

  • Fault-tolerant mechanism for wireless sensor network

      Abstract: The study aims to understand the various types of faults occur in a wireless sensor network (WSN). The primary objective of the fault-tolerant technique is to enhance the robustness and self-healing capacity of sensor network. The resource constraint environment, remote deployment and harsh monitoring conditions frequently invite different types of faults in WSN. The fault can be handled in two ways such as fault tolerance and fault prevention method. The novelty of this state-of-art is, the authors propose two new algorithms named Uniform Energy Clustering for fault tolerance and Population-Based Clustering for fault prevention. The result of the simulation is satisfactory in comparison to existing algorithms such as Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy, Stable Election Protocol, Virtual Area Partition – Energy and Energy-Aware Multi-Hop Multi-Path Hierarchical protocols. In addition to these new algorithms, they also propose a unique taxonomy on fault which is based on sensitivity issues of specific applications.

  • Cloud connection oriented real-time monitoring system for atmospheric
           particles

      Abstract: To meet the requirements of data acquisition from mobile pollution sources and unfixed data acquisition points in atmospheric particle monitoring system, this study designs a real-time monitoring system for atmospheric particles such as PM2.5 based on a single-chip microcomputer, an ET-iLink open cloud platform and an Android operating system. The movable data acquisition nodes for atmospheric particles are designed. The laser scattering method is used to obtain the data of atmospheric particle concentration, which are uploaded to the cloud platform through the GPRS network. The Android application obtains the real time data of atmospheric particle concentration from the cloud platform. Thus the real-time remote monitoring for atmospheric particles is realised. The test results show that the system has the following advantages: stable performance, high scalability and low error rate.

  • Distributed robust filtering with hybrid consensus strategy for sensor
           networks

      Abstract: The problem of distributed state estimation for time-varying uncertain systems over a sensor network within the robust Kalman filtering framework is studied. It is assumed that the parameters of the underlying model are subjected to stochastic uncertainties. At the first step, the authors present a particular form of the Kalman filter named information form of a robust Kalman filter. Then, using a consensus scheme that guarantees an agreement in estimation among nodes, they propose a new consensus-based robust filtering approach. The consensus methodology is a hybrid method that is a combination of consensus on information (CI) and consensus on measurement (CM). To this end, before proposing the hybrid consensus filtering algorithm, distributed robust filtering based on CI and CM have been presented. Next, they show that the estimation error in the proposed consensus algorithm is exponentially mean square bounded using a Lyapunov function. Finally, they provide two illustrative examples to show the robust performance and effectiveness of the proposed consensus filtering algorithms.

  • Toward fast and accurate emergency cases detection in BSNs

      Abstract: In body sensor networks (BSNs), medical sensors capture physiological data from the human body and send them to the coordinator who act as a gateway to health care. The main aim of BSNs is to save peoples’ lives. Therefore, fast and correct detection of emergencies while maintaining low-energy consumption of sensors is essential requirement of BSNs. In this study, the authors propose a new adaptive data sampling approach, where the sampling ratio is adapted based on the sensed data variation. The idea is to use the modified version of the cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm (modified CUSUM) that they previously proposed for wireless sensor networks to monitor the data variability, and adapt the sampling rate accordingly. Modified CUSUM is then applied to the adaptively sampled data to detect anomalies, and the correlation property between physiological parameters will be used to identify emergency cases from false alarms. Several experiments are performed and compared to evaluate the efficiency of their approach, and different parameters are considered.
