  • An Improved Decoding Scheme for Emergency Alert Wake-Up Bits in ATSC 3.0

      Abstract: This paper proposes an improved decoding scheme of emergency alert wake-up bits in Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0. When a broadcast service is being provided, a bootstrap signal of ATSC 3.0 includes the minimal essential information that does not change at least for two consecutive physical layer frames. Then, the received signal can be further assumed to be binary modulated according to each wake-up bit, so as to achieve the improved decoding performance as well as reduced decoding complexity. The simulation results show that the proposed decoding scheme of wake-up bits can obtain signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains of approximately 1.6 dB and 2.5 dB at bit error rate (BER) of 10-4 compared to the conventional decoding scheme under fixed and mobile reception environments, respectively. In addition, the analysis on the computational complexity of the proposed decoding scheme is provided.

  • Layered Division Multiplexing With Co-Located Multiple-Input
           Multiple-Output Schemes

      Abstract: The most recent standard for broadcast services, Advanced Television System Committee-Third Generation (ATSC 3.0), has adopted co-located multi-antenna schemes and Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) in order to increase the capacity and reliability compared to former Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) systems. ATSC 3.0 has adopted both technologies separately, but no combination of them is planned yet. Compared to baseline LDM case, use of several antennas allows for diverse parametrization for each layer. This paper analyzes the potential combination of co-located Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) schemes with LDM. A trade-off analysis between complexity constraints and performance benefits is evaluated.

  • Block-Level Utility Maximization for NOMA-Based Layered Broadcasting

      Abstract: Layered transmission is studied in this paper to accommodate various device capabilities and channel conditions. The problem of efficiently broadcasting a common set of layer-encoded data from a single base station to multiple users over quasi-static fading channels is examined. Considering the maximum tolerable delay, a block-level utility is defined in terms of average probability of successful reception of each layer. Based on non-orthogonal multiple access scheme, we propose a complete algorithm to jointly optimize power allocation and transmission rates. By utilizing the idea of opportunistic scheduling, we first derive the success probability of one single layer in homogeneous scenarios, then extend the results to heterogeneous scenarios where users are subject to different channel statistics. The multi-layer optimization is realized by iteratively repeating the single-layer operations. Starting from the base layer, we first choose an optimal subset of users as the corresponding target group, then apply the single-layer allocation process until no power resources are left. Computer simulation and discussion confirm that our method maximizes the block-level utility at the same time balances the tradeoff between multiuser diversity gain and multicast gain.

  • A QoE-Driven Multicast Strategy With Segment Routing—A Novel Multimedia
           Traffic Engineering Paradigm

      Abstract: Quality of Experience (QoE) reflects end users' overall experience and feeling with network services, but needs support in terms of end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS). Segment routing (SR) as a new routing paradigm can provide good end-to-end QoS guarantee, making traditional multimedia traffic routing more efficient and scalable. In this paper, we address two problems related to the new SR mechanism: enabling fine-grained end-to-end QoS routing under a complex network environment and constructing the multicast routing tree with branch node load balancing. To solve these problems, an Inaccurate information-based QoE-driven Routing algorithm (IQdR) and a Branch-aware Multicast Tree (BaMT) algorithm were proposed. Simulation test results that have compared the performance of our proposed solution against that of other algorithms show that the previous works were outperformed. Additionally, the results also show that our multicast architecture improves the scalability of the network in terms of the number of flows.

  • An Energy-Quality Utility-Based Adaptive Scheduling Solution for Mobile
           Users in Dense Networks

      Abstract: There is an important trend in terms of user expectations of ubiquity in relation to rich media services and increase in number and range of devices with high specifications which enable access to such services, with very ambitious technical requirements. Providing this support is a very challenging issue, especially in urban dense network environments (DenseNet). Diverse solutions have been proposed, including deployment of femtocells in conjunction with the existing infrastructure, but there is still need for new approaches to balance resources and quality in current competitive market. This paper proposes an innovative three-phase adaptive scheduling solution [energy-quality utility-based adaptive scheduling solution (EQUAS)], which performs trade off between service quality and energy efficiency when allocating network resources to mobile users in a DenseNet. Resource allocation is performed according to a utility function that takes into account throughput, device energy consumption, and user mobility. Furthermore, adaptive reallocation is applied to increase network coverage and avoid dropping service. Testing results show how EQUAS outperforms two competitive approaches in terms of energy consumption and efficiency, data throughput, and estimated user satisfaction.

  • On the Parameters of ITU-R P.1546 Propagation Model for Dual-Polarization

      Abstract: As technology evolves, broadcast television is shifting to 4K and 8K resolution videos. To achieve the bit-rates required for transmitting this content, multiple-input-multiple-output communication systems have been tested. Some proposals employ dual polarization links. We employ field measurements to optimize and evaluate the adequacy of the parameters of the ITU-R P.1546 propagation model in a dual polarization setup. In order to improve the accuracy of the predicted electric field, the parameters are tuned for each polarization alone and for both together. Two different optimization algorithms are employed, the steepest descent and the Gauss-Newton method. Significant improvement on the agreement between predicted and measured link budgets is obtained by using the optimized parameters.

  • Distributed Caching Mechanism for Popular Services Distribution in
           Converged Overlay Networks

      Abstract: With the proliferation of portable devices, the exponential growth of the global mobile traffic brings great challenges to the traditional communication networks and the traditional wireless communication technologies. In this context, converged networks and cache-based data offloading have drawn more and more attention based on the strong correlation of services. This paper proposes a novel popular services pushing and caching scheme by using converged overlay networks. The most popular services are pushed by terrestrial broadcasting networks. And they are cached in n router-nodes with limited cache sizes. Each router-node only interconnects with its neighbor nodes. Users are served through the router's WiFi link. If the services requested are cached in the routers, the user can be immediately responded; otherwise, the requests can be responded through the link from cellular stations to the router. In the proposed scheme, the cache size of the router, the maximum number of requests each router can serve, and the whole-time delay are limited. Three node-selecting and dynamic programming algorithms are adopted to maximize the equivalent throughput. Analytical and numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is very effective.

      Abstract: Broadcasting has been proved to be an efficacious approach of video-on-demand (VOD) service. Over the past few decades, many scholars have devoted a great deal of time to the study of broadcasting. Among all available schemes, harmonic broadcasting (HB) scheme points out the minimum bandwidth required to broadcast a popular video given a fixed viewers' waiting time. HB divides each segment equally into several horizontal subsegments in line with the harmonic series. However, such segmentation is too complex to be feasible. To solve this problem, we come up with an original scheme dubbed wrap HB (WHB), in which we partition each segment equally into vertical subsegments according to its serial number. Given a fixed channel allocation, the maximum number of segments of our scheme approaches to the theoretical upper bound. Compared to the fast broadcasting scheme and the recursive frequency-splitting scheme, the buffer requirement in the WHB scheme decreases by 26%. We also design a simple VBR WHB (SVWHB) scheme to accommodate VBR video based on the WHB scheme. The comprehensive simulation results indicate that the SVWHB scheme has similar savings as the WHB scheme.

  • Simplified Level Estimation for Rate-Distortion Optimized Quantization of

      Abstract: The rate-distortion optimized quantization (RDOQ) in High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) brings a significant coding gain but also leads to huge computation at encoder. Since the level estimation (LE) demands dominant computational complexity among the three major internal stages inside the RDOQ, this paper addresses speeding up of the RDOQ process by simplifying the LE stage. Under the observation that in particular cases, some quantization levels are very likely to be changed (or unchanged) after the RDOQ, and zero levels do not need to go through the RDOQ process, we propose an adaptive dead-zone scheme which can make more transform coefficients of high probability to change from one to zero have zero level by quantization itself before the LE stage. Moreover, for the levels expected to keep unchanged, we introduce two approaches to simplify their decision for optimal quantized levels. Our experiment results show 14.39%, 12.88%, and 12.91% of average quantization time saving under all intra (AI-Main), random access (RA-Main), and low delay B (LB-Main) configuration, respectively. Furthermore, the average saving time for the entire encoding is 4.00% for AI-Main, 2.27% for RA-Main, and 2.33% for LB-Main, respectively. In the Bjøntegaard delta bit rate (BDBR) sense, our proposed simplified level estimation framework achieves the above time reduction with merely no performance loss.

  • A Spatiotemporal Content-Based CU Size Decision Algorithm for HEVC

      Abstract: The high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard provides superior efficiency for encoding and improves the compression ratio by almost 50% compared with previous video coding standards, such as advanced video coding (AVC). However, more intensive computation complexity is introduced by implementing the flexible quad tree-structured coding model. In a typical HEVC encoder, coding units (CUs) in a coding tree unit (CTU) that is built as a quad-tree structure are recursively traversed each depth level (CU size) to select the optimal coding configuration. Therefore, most of the encoding time is spent searching for the optimal coding configuration. In this paper, an efficient and fast CU size decision algorithm is proposed to reduce HEVC encoder complexity by the spatiotemporal features. First, an adaptive depth-range prediction method minimizes the possible range depth level by observing previous frames and proximal CTUs. Second, an early termination method based on the boundary examination from the de-blocking filter (DBF) prevents unnecessary calculation on small CU sizes. Furthermore, according to the sum of absolution difference (SAD), a smooth area detection mechanism is triggered when the predictive depth range excludes the largest CU size. This mechanism increase the bitrate of the CU, which contains static objects with complex textures. Compared with the HM 16, the experimental results revealed that the proposed algorithm can achieve an average 59.73% and 64.98% reduction in encoding time along with a 0.68% and 1.27% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BDBR) penalty for various test videos under low-delay P and random-access conditions, respectively.

  • Inter-Block Dependency-Based CTU Level Rate Control for HEVC

      Abstract: Although high efficiency video coding (HEVC) has achieved high coding performance, it has been shown that dependent rate-distortion optimization (RDO) can still further improve the coding performance at the encoder side. Inspired by our previous work on temporal-dependent RDO, this paper proposes a rate control method at coding tree unit (CTU) level to obtain both higher rate-distortion (R-D) performance and lower bitrate errors. We first formulate the global optimization problem in hybrid video coding and present a general solution framework based on a weighted Lagrange multiplier, where the weighted coefficient is related to the strength of temporal dependency among coding units, and a propagation factor is introduced for quantitative measurement of the temporal dependency. Second, an estimation method of CTU level R-D model is proposed to characterize R-D relationship more accurately. Finally, under the constraint of frame level bit budget, a formulation combining inter-block dependency and R-D characteristic is developed for optimal bit allocation at the CTU level. In the process of encoding a frame, a relaxed constraint algorithm (RCA) and a strict constraint algorithm (SCA) are employed to reduce the difference between numbers of actual and target bits for the current frame, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that, on the HEVC test model (HM-16.7), our methods including RCA and SCA achieve considerable R-D performance improvement with lower bitrate errors, outperforming the state-of-the-art schemes. It is worth mentioning that even compared with HEVC without rate control, the RCA can still achieve bitrate savings of 5.4% and 5.1% on average under configurations of low delay P and B frames, respectively.

  • Multiscale Natural Scene Statistical Analysis for No-Reference Quality
           Evaluation of DIBR-Synthesized Views

      Abstract: This paper proposes to blindly evaluate the quality of images synthesized via a depth image-based rendering (DIBR) procedure. As a significant branch of virtual reality (VR), superior DIBR techniques provide free viewpoints in many real applications, including remote surveillance and education; however, limited efforts have been made to measure the performance of DIBR techniques, or equivalently the quality of DIBR-synthesized views, especially in the condition when references are unavailable. To achieve this aim, we develop a novel blind image quality assessment (IQA) method via multiscale natural scene statistical analysis (MNSS). The design principle of our proposed MNSS metric is based on two new natural scene statistics (NSS) models specific to the DBIR-synthesized IQA. First, the DIBR-introduced geometric distortions damage the local self-similarity characteristic of natural images, and the damage degrees of self-similarity present particular variations at different scales. Systematically combining the measurements of the variations mentioned above can gauge the naturalness of the input image and thus indirectly reflect the quality changes of images generated using different DIBR methods. Second, it was found that the degradations in main structures of natural images at different scales remain almost the same, whereas the statistical regularity is destroyed in the DIBR-synthesized views. Estimating the deviation of degradations in main structures at different scales between one DIBR-synthesized image and the statistical model, which is constructed based on a large number of natural images, can quantify how a DIBR method damages the main structures and thus infer the image quality. Via trials, the two NSS-based features extracted above can well predict the quality of DIBR-synthesized images. Further, the two features come from distinct points of view, and we hence integrate them via a straightforward multiplication to derive the proposed blind MNSS-metric, which achieves better performance than each component and state-of-the-art quality methods.

  • A Wavelet-Predominant Algorithm Can Evaluate Quality of THz Security Image
           and Identify Its Usability

      Abstract: This paper presents an aggregate wavelet-predominant algorithm to measure the distortions in THz security images. The algorithm integrates a spectral-based sharpness estimator, a noise estimator derived alpha-stable model and an overall viewing experience estimator based on free-energy principle. Among them, the greater weight is assigned to the spectral-based sharpness estimator considering that the main quality factor in THz security image is sharpness. To verify the feasibility of the proposed metric, we construct the THz security image dataset including a total of 181 THz security images, and each image has the mean opinion score (MOS) collected via subjective quality evaluation experiment. Quantitative experimental results on the constructed THz security image dataset show that the aggregate wavelet-predominant estimator produces the promising overall performance for the estimation of MOS values, with PLCC, SROCC, and RMSE of 0.900, 0.873, and 0.386, respectively. This performance is superior to other opinion-unaware approaches, viz., FISBLIM, SISBLIM, NIQE, CPBD, SINE, S3, FISH, and noise estimator. The determination coefficient (R2) of linear regression between reference and predicted MOSs is 0.81. The result of Bland-Altman analysis further validates that the aggregate wavelet-predominant estimator can substitute for the subjective IQA of THz security image, with approximately 94.5% of data points locating within the limits of agreement. For usability identification, the wavelet-predominant estimator gives the satisfactory results, with accuracy, precision, recall rate, and false positive rate of 84.0%, 79.8%, 95.0%, and 29.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the potential application perspectives of the proposed metric can refer to commercial applications (guarantee THz security images of good quality) and scientific researches (assist in software development for THz security image analysis). Possible researches on this dataset may include the development of THz quality standards, the selection of the best display mode, the enhancement of images, the modeling of image noise, and the detection of prohibited goods.

  • Enhancement of Underwater Images With Statistical Model of Background
           Light and Optimization of Transmission Map

      Abstract: Underwater images often have severe quality degradation and distortion due to light absorption and scattering in the water medium. A hazy image formation model is widely used to restore the image quality. It depends on two optical parameters: the background light (BL) and the transmission map (TM). Underwater images can also be enhanced by color and contrast correction from the perspective of image processing. In this paper, we propose an effective underwater image enhancement method for underwater images in composition of underwater image restoration and color correction. Firstly, a manually annotated background lights (MABLs) database is developed. With reference to the relationship between MABLs and the histogram distributions of various underwater images, robust statistical models of BLs estimation are provided. Next, the TM of R channel is roughly estimated based on the new underwater dark channel prior (NUDCP) via the statistic of clear and high resolution (HD) underwater images, then a scene depth map based on the underwater light attenuation prior (ULAP) and an adjusted reversed saturation map (ARSM) are applied to compensate and modify the coarse TM of R channel. Next, TMs of G-B channels are estimated based on the difference of attenuation ratios between R and G-B channels. Finally, to improve the color and contrast of the restored image with a dehazed and natural appearance, a variation of white balance is introduced as post-processing. In order to guide the priority of underwater image enhancement, sufficient evaluations are conducted to discuss the impacts of the key parameters including BL and TM, and the importance of the color correction. Comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods demonstrate that our proposed underwater image enhancement method can achieve higher accuracy of estimated BLs, lower computation time, overall superior performance, and better information retention.

  • A Generalized Piecewise Linear Companding Transform for PAPR Reduction in
           OFDM Systems

      Abstract: Companding is a well-known technique for the peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) reduction of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. Piecewise linear companding (PLC) scheme, compared with other companding schemes, can effectively reduce PAPR with much lower complexity, while achieving improved bit-error-rate (BER) performance. However, when the PAPR target value for companded signals is relatively small, such as 4 dB for 16-QAM or 5 dB for 64-QAM, there is a clear error floor of PLC in high SNR region for high-order QAM modulation. Focusing on this problem, we first analyze the reason for the error floor of PLC. Based on the analysis, we propose a generalized PLC scheme to reduce the distortion in decompanded signals with the relaxation of the constraint on the conservation of the average signal power. Finally, we formulate the optimization problems to obtain the parameters of the companding function in the pursuit of a preferable tradeoff between the BER and power spectral density performance under the constraint on PAPR. Simulation results verify that the proposed generalized PLC can significantly improve the BER performance while maintaining the same PAPR performance as PLC.

  • A Hybrid PAPR Reduction Scheme for OFDM Systems Using Perfect Sequences

      Abstract: In this paper, a peak to average power ratio (PAPR) reduction scheme with low complexity and high performance for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals is proposed. The proposed scheme is a hybrid PAPR scheme that employs a two-stage cascade structure. The first stage is a post-IFFT stage that can construct a set of high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) sequences from QPSK or BPSK sequences with the smallest possible number of IFFTs. The second stage is based on an optimal Class-III selected mapping (SLM) scheme which consists of a bank of parallel blocks. Each of these blocks generates more candidate sequences from each of QAM sequences by passing it through a set of parallel sub-blocks that perform circular convolution with perfect sequences and circular shifting with optimum shift values. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can outperform existing schemes in terms of PAPR reduction with lower complexity.

  • Quasi-Cyclic Spatially Coupled LDPC Code for Broadcasting

      Abstract: Flexible and robust transmission schemes are required to support different coded modulation modes, receiver types and channel conditions in future broadcasting systems. However, conventional low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded schemes are usually optimized towards particular scenario, and may face the problem of performance degradation in other different scenarios. In this paper, a type of quasi-cyclic spatially coupled LDPC (QC-SC-LDPC) codes, which have been recently proven to be able to universally achieve capacity over different channels under conventional belief propagation decoding, are proposed as the forward error correcting codes for broadcasting applications. Then a QC-SC-LDPC coded transmission scheme is proposed, which is capable of showing good performance in various scenarios under practical constraints of finite coupling length, smoothing parameter, uncoupled code length and number of decoding iterations. To maintain the universal property under the above constraints, a typical construction method is developed, based on which a QC-SC-LDPC code is constructed as an example. Finally, the performance and robustness of the proposed QC-SC-LDPC coded transmission scheme are demonstrated via simulations under different yet typical coded modulation modes and channel conditions.

  • Suboptimal Maximum Likelihood Detection of Integer Carrier Frequency
           Offset for Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting System

      Abstract: The integrated services digital broadcasting-terrestrial (ISDB-T) system adopts band segmented transmission orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (BST-OFDM) to support different services using hierarchical transmission. In the ISDB-T system, in particular, a hierarchical configuration depends on modulation type used in OFDM segment, which has to be decoded at the receiver. Therefore, it is necessary to detect integer carrier frequency offset (IFO) before decoding the modulation type carried through transmission and multiplexing configuration control (TMCC) signal. To address this issue, an effective IFO estimation scheme is presented for the ISDB-T system, considering information-carrying TMCC signal as pilot symbol without any need of additional pilots. In order to verify the performance of the proposed estimation scheme, theoretical detection error rate is derived. It is shown from simulation results that the redundantly transmitted TMCC signal can be efficiently utilized for IFO detection, offering an approximate performance of maximum likelihood detection.
