  • Improving threat detection in networks using deep learning
    • Abstract: Detecting threats on the Internet is a key factor in maintaining data and information security. An intrusion detection system tries to prevent such attacks from occurring through the analysis of patterns and behavior of the data stream in the network. This paper presents a large data stream detection and analysis distributed platform, through the use of machine learning to dimensionality reduction. The system is evaluated based on three criteria: the accuracy, the number of false positives, and number of false negatives. Each classifier presented better accuracy when using 5 and 13 features, having fewer false positives and false negatives, allowing the detection of threats in real-time over a large volume of data, with greater precision.

  • MineCap: super incremental learning for detecting and blocking
           cryptocurrency mining on software-defined networking
    • Abstract: Covert mining of cryptocurrency implies the use of valuable computing resources and high energy consumption. In this paper, we propose MineCap, a dynamic online mechanism for detecting and blocking covert cryptocurrency mining flows, using machine learning on software-defined networking. The proposed mechanism relies on Spark Streaming for online processing of network flows, and, when identifying a mining flow, it requests the flow blocking to the network controller. We also propose a learning technique called super incremental learning, a variant of the super learner applied to online learning, which takes the classification probabilities of an ensemble of classifiers as features for an incremental learning classifier. Hence, we design an accurate mechanism to classify mining flows that learn with incoming data with an average of 98% accuracy, 99% precision, 97% sensitivity, and 99.9% specificity and avoid concept drift–related issues.

  • Capacity analysis of maximal ratio combining over Beaulieu-Xie fading
    • Abstract: The present paper analyzes an L-branch maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver over the Beaulieu-Xie (BX) fading channel. The expression of the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of an MRC receiver in BX fading is derived by using the characteristic function approach. The obtained PDF is then utilized to calculate the various link-level and system-level parameters. This paper focuses on deriving closed-form expressions for different adaptive transmission techniques based on instantaneous channel state information in BX fading. The accuracy of our derived expressions is verified by comparing them with Monte Carlo simulations.

  • Cyclic interleaving scheme for an IFDMA system
    • Abstract: In this paper, a new interleaving scheme for an interleaved frequency division multiple access (IFDMA) system is proposed. The proposed scheme combines the advantages of code division multiple access (CDMA) with maximal length sequence (m-sequence) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). Multiaccess interference (MAI) among users is eliminated by employing orthogonal carriers, and the intersymbol interference (ISI) due to multipath channels is minimized by using cyclic interleaving. Diversity gain is achieved in the proposed method with maximal ratio combining (MRC) in the case of a Rayleigh environment. Compared to complex multiuser (MU) detection, the detection process in the proposed method is relatively simple. Multipath orthogonality is achieved in the proposed method, avoiding the need for channel equalization. The proposed method is compared with the conventional interleaving employing well-known minimum mean square error frequency domain equalization (MMSE-FDE). The Monte Carlo simulation results prove the superiority of the proposed interleaving over conventional interleaving with MMSE-FDE, showing that the present scheme is suitable for both uplink and downlink mobile radio transmissions.

  • Physical layer security in shotgun cellular systems over
           correlated/independent shadow fading channels
    • Abstract: The shotgun cellular systems (SCSs) (modeling, generally, a dense cellular or wireless data network deployment and non-ideal regular hexagonal grid with site-acquisition difficulties, variable traffic load) are wireless communication systems with randomly placed base stations (BSs) over the entire plane according to a stochastic (e.g., Poisson) point process in n dimensions (n = 1, 2, and 3). Due to the good performance and the importance of the SCSs in today’s communications, the physical layer security of these systems is practically of importance, specifically, in more realistic channel propagation models. In this paper, by assuming that the channel coefficients are known at the receiver, we analyze the performance of the physical layer security for the classic Wyner’s three-node model in the SCSs over correlated/independent log-normal shadow fading channels. For this purpose, first, we calculate the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance at a mobile station (MS) in an SCS. Then, the average secrecy capacity (ASC), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNSC), the secure outage probability (SOP), and the lower bound of SOP (LSOP) are obtained, and also, their approximated closed-form expressions are derived. Finally, analytical results are validated numerically.

  • Moments of the quadrivariate Rayleigh distribution with applications for
           diversity receivers
    • Abstract: Wireless channels exhibit time, frequency, and spatial correlation. Models in literature that study four-branch diversity receivers make assumptions such as independence, constant correlation, exponential correlation, or some other kind between received signals at each antenna. However, these models are not accurate in many scenarios. Addressing this issue, we provide novel results for the moments, moment-generating function, probability density function, and cumulative distribution function of the quadrivariate Rayleigh distribution with an arbitrary correlation model. To the best of our knowledge, our model is the most comprehensive and the only one that can incorporate the 3GPP suggested spatial correlation structure. We use our new results to derive an analytical expression for the moments of the output signal-to-noise ratio of the four-branch equal gain combining receiver and the four-branch maximal ratio combining receiver. We provide original insight about their output signal-to-noise ratio distributions through their higher order moments in different scenarios. Our expressions are valid for all moments.

  • A break-glass protocol based on ciphertext-policy attribute-based
           encryption to access medical records in the cloud
    • Abstract: In emergency care, fast and efficient treatment is vital. The availability of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) allows healthcare professionals to access a patient’s data promptly, which facilitates the decision-making process and saves time by not repeating medical procedures. Unfortunately, the complete EMR of a patient is often not available during an emergency situation to all treatment teams. Cloud services emerge as a promising solution to this problem by allowing ubiquitous access to information. However, EMR storage and sharing through clouds raise several concerns about security and privacy. To this end, we propose a protocol through which all treatment teams involved in the emergency care can securely decrypt relevant data from the patient’s EMR and add new information about the patient’s status. Furthermore, our protocol ensures that treatment teams will only access the patient’s EMR for the period during which the patient is under their care. Finally, we present a formal security analysis of our protocol and some initial experimental results.

  • Performance analysis of secondary users under heterogeneous licensed
           spectrum environment in cognitive radio ad hoc networks
    • Abstract: Cognitive radio (CR) is a hopeful technology to sort out spectrum scarcity and underutilization problem in ad hoc networks. With the help of cognitive radio technology, unlicensed users can efficiently utilize the unused part of heterogeneous licensed spectrum. In this article, we present a three-dimensional (3D) Markov chain analysis for spectrum management scheme under heterogeneous licensed bands of two different licensed spectrum pools in cognitive radio ad hoc networks. We present the concept of interpool and intrapool spectrum handoff in the proposed model and derive blocking probability, dropping probability, non-completion probability, and throughput to estimate the performance of the secondary users under heterogeneous licensed spectrum environment. The impact of secondary users dynamic along with the primary users’ activity model on the performance measuring metrics in terms of blocking probability, dropping probability, non-completion probability, and throughput for three different cases is also investigated. The proposed model offers significant improvement in the performance of secondary users under heterogeneous licensed spectrum environment in a CR ad hoc network.

  • Proof of usage: user-centric consensus for data provision and exchange
    • Abstract: This paper presents a new consensus algorithm, Proof of Usage (PoU), for the blockchain technology. This consensus is introduced for permissioned (or private) blockchains and is designed for a user-centric personal data market. This market is subject to specific regulations with which conventional blockchains fail to comply. Proof of Usage aims to promote a new paradigm dedicated to usage incentivization, valuation, and control of user data in various sectors, such as banking and insurance. Other consensuses such as Proof of Stake or historical Proof of Work do not encourage coin spending and usage (in fact, Proof of Stake promotes the opposite). However, the value of the currency mainly depends on its use. This paper first introduces a contextualization of blockchain technology and decentralized consensus models. The motivation is then discussed for a new model of personal data exchange in a decentralized but supervised environment. The PoU protocol and its process flow are defined in detail. Furthermore, the paper explores two different approaches regarding the reward mechanism and the incentive model. Finally, the paper focuses on security requirements and how PoU meets such requirements in a permissioned-based blockchain system.

    • Abstract: Blockchain is a disruptive technology that relies on the distributed nature of the peer-to-peer network while performing an agreement, or consensus, a mechanism to achieve an immutable, global, and consistent registry of all transactions. Thus, a key challenge in developing blockchain solutions is to design the consensus mechanism properly. As a consequence of being a distributed application, any consensus mechanism is restricted to offer two of three properties: consistency, availability, and partition tolerance. In this paper, we survey the main consensus mechanisms on blockchain solutions, and we highlight the properties of each one. Moreover, we differentiate both deterministic and probabilistic consensus mechanisms, and we highlight coordination solutions that facilitate the data distribution on the blockchain, without the need for a sophisticated consensus mechanism.

  • A prototype filter design based on channel estimation for OQAM/OFDM
           systems
    • Abstract: A prototype filter design for offset quadrature amplitude–modulation based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OQAM/OFDM) systems is proposed in this study. The influence of channel estimation is considered, with the object to minimize stop-band energy. An efficient preamble structure is proposed to improve the channel estimation and save the frequency spectral efficiency. The reciprocal of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (RSINR) is derived to measure the influence of the prototype for channel estimation. After that, the problem of prototype filter design is formulated as an optimization problem with constraints on the RSINR. To accelerate the convergence and obtain a global optimal solution, the box-based branch and bound algorithm is utilized to solve the optimization problem. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the prototype filter designed in this study.

  • On the detection of selfish mining and stalker attacks in blockchain
           networks
    • Abstract: The blockchain technology emerged in 2008 as a distributed peer to peer network structure, capable of ensuring security for transactions made using the Bitcoin digital currency, without the need for third party intermediaries to validate them. Although its beginning was linked to cryptocurrencies, its use has diversified over the recent years. There are various projects using the blockchain technology to perform document validation, electronic voting, tokenization of non-perishable goods, and many others. With its increasing use, concern arises with possible attacks that could threaten the integrity of the consensus of the chain. One of the well-known attacks to the blockchain consensus mechanism is the selfish mining attack, in which malicious nodes can deflect their behavior from the standard pattern by not immediately disclosing their newly mined blocks. This malicious behavior can result in a disproportionate share of rewards for those nodes, especially if they have a significant processing power. The goal of this paper is to present a simple heuristic to detect the presence of selfish mining attack (and variants) in blockchain networks that use the proof-of-work (PoW) consensus algorithm. The proposal is to signal when the blockchain fork height deviates from the standard, indicating when the network is under the influence of such attacks.

  • FDTD propagation of VLF-LF waves in the presence of ions in the
           earth-ionosphere waveguide
    • Abstract: The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used for a long time to compute the propagation of very low frequency (VLF) and low frequency (LF) radio waves in the Earth-Ionosphere waveguide. In previously published FDTD schemes, only the electronic density of the ionosphere was accounted for, since in usual natural conditions the effect of the ion density can be neglected. In the present paper, the FDTD scheme is extended to the case where one or several ion species must be accounted for, which may occur in special natural conditions or in such artificial conditions as after high altitude nuclear bursts. The conditions that must hold for the effect of the ions not to be negligible are discussed, the FDTD scheme with ions is derived, and numerical experiments are provided to show that the effect of the ions may be significant when the ionosphere is disturbed by incident flows of γ or β rays.

  • Low-latency and high-throughput software turbo decoders on multi-core
           architectures
    • Abstract: In the last few years, with the advent of a software-defined radio (SDR), the processor cores were stated to be an efficient solution to execute the physical layer components. Indeed, multi-core architectures provide both high-processing performance and flexibility, such that they are used in current base station systems instead of dedicated FPGA or ASIC devices. Currently, an extension of the SDR concept is running. Indeed, cloud platforms become attractive for the virtualization of radio access network functions. Actually, they improve the efficiency of the computational resource usage, and thus the global power efficiency. However, the implementation of a physical layer on a Cloud-RAN platform as discussed by Wubben and Paul (2016); Checko et al. (JAMA 17(1):405–426, 2015); Inc (2015); and Wubben et al. (JAMA 31(6):35–44, 2014) or FlexRAN platform as discussed by Wilson (2018); Foukas et al. (2017); Corp. (2017); Foukas et al. (2016) is a challenging task according to the drastic latency and throughput constraints as discussed by Yu et al. (2017) and Parvez (2018). Processing latencies from 10 μ s up to hundred of μ s are required for future digital communication systems. In this context, most of works about software implementations of ECC applications is based on massive frame parallelism to reach high throughput. Nonetheless, they produce unacceptable decoding latencies. In this paper, a new turbo decoder parallelization approach is proposed for x86 multi-core processors. It provides both: high-throughput and low-latency performances. In comparison with all CPU- and GPU-related works, the following results are observed: shorter processing latency, higher throughput, and lower energy consumption. Regarding to the best state-of-the-art x86 software implementations, 1.5 × to 2 × throughput improvements are reached, whereas a latency reduction of 50 × and an energy reduction of 2 × are observed.

  • Multidimensional frequency estimation using LU decomposition
           eigenvector–based algorithm
    • Abstract: Many algorithms have been proposed for multidimensional frequency estimation from a single snapshot or multiple snapshots of data mixture. Most of these algorithms fail when one or more identical frequencies are found in certain dimensions. In this paper, a multidimensional frequency estimation technique from a single datum snapshot is proposed. It applies LU decomposition (Gaussian Elimination) on an eigenvector-based algorithm for multidimensional frequency estimation. This proposed technique is simulated using a MATLAB code. The average root mean square error (RMSE) is investigated as a performance measure of the proposed technique. A comparison between original eigenvector-based (traditional) and the proposed techniques is introduced. The simulation results show that the RMSE of the proposed technique is less than the original one, and it has a more efficient solution for an identical frequency case but at the expense of complexity.

  • Exploiting capture and interference cancellation for uplink random
           multiple access in 5G millimeter-wave networks
    • Abstract: The forthcoming 5G technology aims to provide massive device connectivity and ultra-high capacity with reduced latency and costs. These features will be enabled by increasing the density of the base stations, using millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands, massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques. The ability to support a large number of terminals in a small area is in fact a great challenge to guarantee massive access. In this context, this paper proposes a new receiver model for the uplink of 5G mmWave cellular networks. The receiver, called Iterative Decoding and Interference Cancellation (IDIC), is based on the Slotted Aloha (SA) protocol and exploits the capture effect alongside the successive IC process to resolve packet collisions. A 5G propagation scenario, modeled according to recent mmWave channel measurements, is used to compare IDIC with the widely adopted Contention Resolution Diversity SA (CRDSA) scheme to show the performance gain of IDIC, when elements of practical relevance, like imperfect cancellation and receive power diversity, are considered. The impact of packet and power diversity is also investigated to derive the preferable uplink random access strategy that maximizes the system throughput according to the offered channel load.

  • Traffic load–based cell selection for APCO25 conventional–based
           professional mobile radio
    • Abstract: Wireless communication between public safety officers is very important to transmit voice or data during emergency crises. When the public communication networks cannot provide services during crises, disasters, and high traffic cases, Professional or private mobile radio (PMR) such as Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO25) conventional systems are needed to improve the service quality and to provide uninterrupted service to the users. In this paper, we propose traffic-based cell selection algorithms for the APCO25 conventional systems to attach users to base stations in a balanced manner to reduce waiting time while establishing a connection. The simulation results of the proposed traffic load–based cell selection algorithms are illustrated in terms of the RSSI measurements counter, the number of connection requests, the average waiting time, and the number of re-selections for the APCO25 conventional systems.

  • Space-time code selection via particle swarm optimization
    • Abstract: In this paper, the space-time code selection technique for multiple-inputs single-output systems is optimized using particle swarm optimization. We considered both variable-rate and constant-rate strategies. For a variable-rate technique, we address the problems of minimizing the bit-error rate for a given throughput objective and maximizing the throughput for a given bit-error rate objective. For a constant-rate technique, we address the problem of minimizing the bit-error rate. Results show that it is possible to find BER and throughput values close to those required when using a variable-rate technique with optimized threshold levels. For the constant-rate technique, we obtain considerable energy to noise gains when using optimized threshold levels.
