  • Dose scale matter': scale and research traditions

    • Authors: กษมา พลกิจ, ปวร มณีสถิตย์, ยุพเรศ สิทธิพงษ์, สถาปนา กิตติกุล, รณวีร์ สุวรรณทะมาลี
      Pages: 2 - 23
Abstract: Scale is a central tenet of spatial–related research; however, the “scale issues” in landscape architecture and environmental planning have often been taken for granted and rarely been questioned. This paper explores the issues of scale through reviewing literature from two disciplines tied to spatial research, which are geography and landscape ecology. These two disciplines put the scale issues at the forefront of their studies, and they are deemed appropriate since both provide fundamental knowledge for many fields, including landscape architecture and environmental planning, that examine human–environment systems.  By situating scale in research traditions, this paper explains what scale is and explores “scale” from two schools of thought–the science of scale and the social construction of scale.  The paper urges to discuss the issues of scale explicitly at the beginning of the research to avoid confusion among researchers.  The paper also argues that, fundamentally, by understanding scale issues and problems from various perspectives would not only help ways in which the complex spatial phenomena can be conceptualized, investigated and managed through multi–scalar frameworks, but also encourage teamwork in multi–disciplinary research.

  • The residential real estate development process through participation:
case study of Co-housing project and Baan Mankong project

    • Authors: ถิรวัฒน์ พิมพ์เวิน
      Pages: 24 - 47
Abstract: Residential is one of the largest sectors that has highest value in Thailand’s real estate market. When the market reached saturated predicament, real estate companies developed new projects trying to capture new market segmentation. In contrary, some real estate development types mainly focus on a production returns (mass product) rather than encouraging a sense of community to residents. In fact, cultural foundation of Thai
community are community-based culture and community social area. Apart from the real estate projects developed by the Thai Government, a number of developers tried to create the sense of community in housing projects through extensive participatory process. This article aims to study the participatory process in real estate development project comparing between government and private developers to examine lessons learned in applying
participation into the residential real estate development process in the future. The research was conducted on two case studies, which are co-housing project (Bandiaokan 2 project) and Baan Mankong project (Rung Manee Pattana Community).

  • The searching process for social and cultural identities for contemporary
design: case studies of wooden row houses along Amphawa Canal

    • Authors: ณัฐพนธ์ อนุสรณ์ทรางกูร, ปรีชญา ครูเกษตร
      Pages: 48 - 73
Abstract: Many countries have started to identify their unique cultures by scrutinizing their traditional rules and values. Such identification of the cultural uniqueness has a direct impact on the work of contemporary-interior design. Interior environment in each region reflects perceptions, behaviors and specific solutions to the natural environment that form the
regionally specific culture. Regarded as accumulated wisdoms of the ancestors, local
socio-cultural Identity is an essential element that should be accounted for in the interior design process. Gaining more recognition of the local socio-cultural identity imprinted in the interior design can bring sustainable benefits concerning economy and culture of
communities. In this work; therefore, we present the searching for social and cultural
identities for using in the interior design. Design management efforts involve long-term work in the background and involve different environmental design that expresses local
socio-cultural identity as one of the significant competitive priorities for increasing the value and a better visualization of the communal identity. From a quality management perspective, the speed of design and the interior environmental design indicate the
importance of design quality in inheritance and conservation issues because design efforts often have inherent drivers for people’s perception through an optimized design. The
researcher selected “Amphawa Floating Market and Community” in Samut Songkhram province to be a case study of a community where travel itineraries were managed in the form of creative tourism or local tourism. By scoping only on the part of building community and uniqueness of Amphawa floating market which is called the wooden row house along Amphawa Canal.

  • Developing devices for handrail installation and dimensions of handrail
           installation in local materials

    • Authors: ปิยเดช อัครโพธิวงศ์
      Pages: 74 - 91
Abstract: This research aims to develop a tool for scaling handrail and using substituted local materials as well as study the local materials that can be used for handrail materials by having hypothesis that the installment standard of handrail may differ in individual person. The difference may come from the physical differences of each person as well as the
difference in handrail materials may cause different in installation scaling. The scaling tool that developed in this research can be the appropriate dimension of elderly in actual sites. As well as this tool can apply for testing the relationship between the substituted materials in handrail and actual installation dimension whether the actual dimension relates with standard dimension. This research has developed the scaling tools as described and testing in actual site. It was found out that the tools can be installed conveniently. The testing of the relationship between materials and dimension of handrail found out that the materials affect the dimension in elderly in Bangkok. The research found that in average of 61 - 70 years old, the elderly satisfied at 75 centimeters which higher that standard at 65 - 70 centimeters. The conclusion of this research points out that the tool for scaling dimension handrail is necessary due to the elderly in different places might satisfy in different of installation dimension. This tool can help to find a suitable dimension for handrail installation of each elderly. Also, the different of handrail’s materials might affect to installation dimension. In some areas the standard material such as stainless handrail might be difficult to find and apply substituted materials instead such as PVC tube, bamboo, or steel tube which are cheap and easy to find. In this situation the tool for scaling dimension of handrail might be necessary and it can improve the satisfaction and confidence of elderly in using substituted materials handrail.

  • The development of concrete masonry units by luffa cylindrica fiber

    • Authors: ดิศสกุล อึ้งตระกูล, กิตติพงศ์ รื่นวงศ์
      Pages: 92 - 107
Abstract: This article describes development of concrete masonry units made from luffa cylindrica fiber to be an environment–friendly material in order to promote the use of
agricultural material in architectural work. Chopped luffa cylindrica fiber was used as
admixture of concrete masonry units based on Thai Industrial Standard of Non–Load
Bearing Concrete Masonry Unit in type of non–moisture controlled units 58 – 1990. There were 5 mixture ratios by having prototype concrete masonry unit mixture of Portland
Cement Type I : sand : gravel = 1 : 3 : 5 by weight (kg.) with 10% of clean water by total mixture weight and then replaced gravel with luffa cylindrica fiber in ratios of 25, 50, 75 and 100 by weight. The concrete masonry units were casted in 10 x 10 x 10 cm3 cube steel molds in order to find out the maximum ratio of luffa cylindrica fiber used to replace gravel to produce concrete with the standard size of 70x190x390 mm with dimensional coordinate of 4/5 x 2 x 4 according to Thai Industrial Standard 58 – 1990. The research results showed that D formula with 75 grams of luffa cylindrica fiber replacement for gravel was the maximum ratio to give average density of 1237.95 kg./m3., compressive strength of 3.19 MPa, 0.044% of lengthwise shrinkage, 11.17% of water absorption and 0.132 W/m.K of
thermal conductivity. It could be concluded that luffa cylindrica fiber could be admixture of non–load bearing concrete masonry units which could be applied with architectural work as well.

  • Traditional houses of Lavue ethnic group in Mae Cham, Chiangmai province

    • Authors: สิริชัย ร้อยเที่ยง, เกรียงไกร เกิดศิริ
      Pages: 108 - 131
Abstract: Lavue, the Austro–Asiatic speakers, is regarded as an indigenous ethnic group of mainland Southeast Asia. Lavue people had been inhabited in Southeast Asia earlier than the groups of Thai speaker migrated to this region. This study aims to examine a village of Lavue people in Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai, as a case study because their customs and traditions related to the built environment and vernacular architecture are still conserved well rather than other Lavue villages nearby an urban area. From a fielded survey, this study found that the development of vernacular dwelling house of Lavue can be divided into 3 phases 1) traditional Lavue dwelling house 2) traditional Lavue dwelling house with addition 3) modern Lavue dwelling House. However, only a traditional Lavue dwelling house is discussed in this paper because it is an endangered house. There is only one house of this type that still survive in the village. A qualitative research was used to study the traditional house of Lavue in order to analyze its architectural form, structure, interior space organization, sacred space. This study records an observation, survey the house, interview the house owner and scholars. Finally, this study of traditional Lavue house will provide a contribution for the status of knowledge of vernacular dwelling house of Lavue.
