  • Discovering the role of innovation in contemporary business systems: an
assessment technique from the literature analysis
    • Authors: Hanen Chaouch Jebril, Khaled Ouni, Lotfi Nabli
      Pages: 1 - 15
Abstract: In an increasingly changing environment, innovation is recognised as one of the main sources of sustainable competitive advantage. Innovation is able to improve company products and processes and this progress allows companies to survive and be more efficient, in other words to be more profitable that non-innovators. In this way, the aim of the paper is to investigate, through a literature analysis, the connection between innovation and company performance by referring to a whole range of sectors such as entertainment, culture, sports and IT in order to highlight that private equity investments are associated with a consequent increase in innovation. The method used for the research is based on a qualitative approach. International literature on the topic is examined in order to define the role of private equity in the increase of company innovation. The findings of the paper emphasise how innovation, private equity, social and environmental factors are increasingly connected to the business systems that decide to invest in product and process innovation.

  • Innovation and firm internationalisation: evidence from Italy
    • Authors: Daniela Federici, Valentino Parisi
      Pages: 16 - 27
Abstract: The paper explores the relation between innovation investments and internationalisation choices of Italian firms. To this end, we rely on an integrated data set that combines the Indagine sulle Imprese Manifatturiere carried out by the Unicredit Bank with publicly available company accounts for the period 2004-2006 to estimate a multinomial Probit model. This methodology allows studying how innovation affects different modes of internalisation. Our results suggest that the various channels of international involvement are positively associated with both having carried out innovative and ICT investments. As expected, this finding can be traced to the positive impact of these variables on firm productivity, which permits more internationalised firms to exploit market opportunities compared to domestic firms.

  • The consumer journey in the digital age: the challenges faced by
           destination and place marketing agencies
    • Authors: Peter Scott, Tamsin Scott, Peter Stokes, Neil Moore, Simon M. Smith, Caroline Rowland, Tony Ward
      Pages: 28 - 45
Abstract: This conceptual paper evolved from an extensive literature review and a consultancy project conducted via a UK University Business School/commercial sector collaboration. The paper explores how the digital age is presenting challenges for destination and place marketing agencies. Key trends in consumer behaviour are identified and their significance is examined. The context is largely the European tourism sector with a particular focus on the UK. The paper argues that many place and destination marketing agencies are not responding to the challenges of the digital era. With this as the backdrop, a novel conceptualisation of the customer journey model is offered which can be tested empirically. A vignette supports the model and this illustrates the complexities in consumer behaviour that are involved in a decision over where to take a city break. The paper concludes with strategic recommendations for destination and place marketing agencies.

  • The performance of Italian conservatories: a methodological proposal
    • Authors: Domenico Celenza, Fabio Nappo, Alberto Giraldi, Martina Fusco
      Pages: 46 - 66
Abstract: This paper aims to analyse the theme of management control in the Italian conservatories as cultural companies, using the financial statement analysis with ratios to measure and summarise the performances achieved. The analysis is structured into two stages: the first stage analyses the indicators for a better control management; the second one shows the data obtained from the application of these indicators. The research topic is developed into two levels: a qualitative one and quantitative one. In the first level, we analyse the existing ratios for the financial statement analysis of conservatories; in the second level, we examine the results of the financial statement analysis of the 15% of Italian conservatories. The paper proposes practical evidence to support the financial statement analysis as a management control tool for the conservatories. The approach taken for the development of performance reporting system is intended to detect the aggregate results through logical indexes.

  • Social media adoption: an exploratory international case study of
           hotel organisations
    • Authors: Domenico Celenza, Fabio Nappo, Alberto Giraldi, Martina Fusco
      Pages: 67 - 82
Abstract: The pressure on organisations to adopt social media technologies is increasing, due to the large usage among customers and stakeholders. Nevertheless, there are still uncertainties about why organisations adopt social media and researchers call for more empirical studies in this research field. This study focuses on a hotel chain that recently made the decision to adopt social media. A technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework is used to analyse the hotel chain and local hotels' perception of the social media adoption. 22 interviews in 14 hotels in seven European countries have been conducted. The results shows that the hotel management and the local hotels have different views on why social media should be adopted and that there are several organisational challenges for the hotels, such as example to create structures for social media usage within the organisations.
