  • Introduction
    • Abstract: The Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, designed by architect Isaac Holden and built 1835–1841 near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Drawn by W. Mason and engraved by W.E. Tucker (Philadelphia: Butler & Long, pr., ca. 1860). (Wellcome Images, Wikimedia Commons. License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Once one gets past the perversity of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether” (1844), it is hard not to be impressed by his skills of observation. Ostensibly set in southern France, the story was written in Philadelphia and the method it purports to describe (or rather the one Tarr and Fether claim to have improved upon) bears an uncanny resemblance to the ... • Persuasion and Coercion: Therapeutic Landscapes of the Early National
           Period
    • Abstract: Ground Plan of the [Friends’] Asylum (att. William Strickland, 1814–16), Philadelphia. Plan in 1853, after the addition of lodges (end pavilions) for the most disturbed. (Library Company of Philadelphia) For nineteenth-century experts, the architecture of the asylum was an indispensable tool for the treatment of the insane. Thomas Story Kirkbride, head of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane from 1840 to 1883 and the leading mid-nineteenth-century American authority on the treatment of mental illness told his readers that The moral treatment of the insane, embraces a most extensive range. Its importance in nearly every case can hardly be over-rated, while in some, it alone is ... Read More

  • “Until Cleansed and Purified”: Landscapes of Health in the
           Interpermeable World
    • Abstract: Aerial view of the Lazaretto, 1860s. (Watercolor by T. L. Cernea, Philadelphia History Museum at the Atwater Kent) Philadelphia’s Lazaretto quarantine station stands empty and seemingly forgotten on the banks of the Delaware River just a mile west of Philadelphia International Airport. The roar of jet engines above and the background hum of traffic on Interstate 95 just a few blocks away contrast with the stately calm of the Lazaretto, where what looks like a grand but decaying Federal-style manor house and a scattering of smaller outbuildings border a strangely bucolic stretch of riverfront, facing the wild landscape of Little Tinicum Island in the middle of the Delaware (Fig. 2). Two ... Read More

  • Housing Lunatics and Students: Nineteenth-Century Asylums and Dormitories
    • Abstract: Baldwin Cottage, Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, 1887, Weary and Kramer, architects. Baldwin Cottage housed about thirty students. Along with Talcott Hall, these two cottages replaced an earlier congregate dormitory building known as the Second Ladies’ Hall. (Photo by author) Nineteenth-century reformers shared a belief in self-improvement of individuals enacted through the force of environmental factors, both built and natural. Prison wardens, psychiatrists, park designers, and urban planners all had faith in a form of environmental determinism, the idea that certain architectural settings could shape behavior. Much as doctors attempted to reeducate unhealthy minds through carefully planned ... Read More

  • Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals
    • Abstract: Administration Building, Buffalo State Hospital, Buffalo, New York, 2003 Almost all nineteenth-century asylums built in the United States were modeled after the Kirkbride plan (named for Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, the superintendent of the Philadelphia Hospital for the Insane), which consisted of a central administration building flanked symmetrically by linked pavilions, each stepping back at right angles. This layout facilitated a hierarchical segregation according to sex, illness, and even social class. At present, only a few Kirkbride asylums still serve their original function. The very qualities that made them appealing in the first place—their enormous size, heavy construction, and distinctive floor ... Read More

  • In the Garden of Puériculture: Cultivating the Ideal French Infant in
Real and Imagined Landscapes of Care (1895–1935)
    • Abstract: Bébés dans les choux (Babies in cabbage fields). (Postcard, Anonymous, ca. 1906) There is a centuries-old tradition in France of explaining the procreative process to children by telling them that babies are born in cabbage fields. It is a myth that has a rich array of literary, cultural, and visual references to reinforce it, and it seems to speak to a fantasy, unique among the French, that the fertile soil itself was capable of producing crops of healthy infants.1 By the early twentieth century, a new and decidedly more clinical space for the therapeutic cultivation of French infants was emerging that also had loosely agricultural antecedents: the transparent crèche of glass or centre ... • Greening Cities in an Urbanizing Age: The Human Health Bases in the
           Nineteenth and Early Twenty-first Centuries
    • Abstract: Expressions of urban greening in the nineteenth and early twenty-first centuries. Image on left: Birds-eye view of Central Park in New York City, N.Y. (William Scherer [WilliamSchererPhotography.com]). Image on right: Simulated illustration of urban greening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Philadelphia Water Department. Rendering by Wallace, Roberts and Todd) Since the rise of urban civilization, vegetated public space has been a strategy to enhance the experience of living in cities. Mesopotamian ruler Sennacharib is said to have dedicated a park to the citizens of Ninevah,1 and trees were planted in central gathering places during the Greco-Roman era.2 Amid European and North American ... • Home and/or Hospital: The Architectures of End-of-Life Care
    • Abstract: Frank Gehry’s Maggie’s Centre at Dundee, Scotland, shows the power of architecture to inspire patients diagnosed with cancer. (The Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres Trust) The architecture of end-of-life care is a relatively understudied topic. Most healthcare architects focus their attention on creating effective environments to heal patients, rather than on the relief of symptoms and end-of-life design arrangements. Indeed, for more than a century hospital architects and administrators have put extraordinary faith in the power of architecture to cure, in other words in the capacity of buildings to serve as part of society’s ever-expanding toolkit to eradicate disease. Palliative care ... Read More
