  • Numerical investigation of the effects of fuselage upsweep in a propulsive
           fuselage concept
    • Abstract: Abstract In recent years, aircraft concepts employing wake-filling devices to reduce mission fuel burn have gained increasing attention. The study presented here aims at a detailed physical understanding of the effects of integrating a propulsive fuselage device on a commercial aircraft. Compared to an isolated, axisymmetric fuselage-propulsor configuration, a propulsive fuselage device experiences an increased circumferential inlet distortion due to three-dimensional geometric features of the aircraft. This study uses three-dimensional CFD simulations to investigate the effect of fuselage upsweep on the aero-propulsive performance of an aircraft configuration featuring a boundary layer ingestion device. It is shown that fuselage upsweep has a negative impact on the performance of a propulsive fuselage device as compared to an axisymmetric configuration. Increasing the upsweep angle by \(\Delta \alpha _{{{\text{SW}},{\text{PFC}}}} = 3.5^\circ\) leads to an increase in required fuselage fan shaft power by 19%. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the negative effects of fuselage upsweep on the propulsor’s performance can be effectively mitigated by a circumferential variation in the propulsor nacelle thickness.

  • Estimating supersonic commercial aircraft market and resulting CO $$_2$$ 2
           emissions using public movement data
    • Abstract: Abstract Interest and effort in re-introducing civil supersonic transport (SST) airplanes as a means of travel have surged in the past decade. Current major endeavours are underway for both commercial and business supersonic vehicles. The value proposition for these aircraft exists for high-net-worth individuals and business-class travellers who value time savings more than the potential cost associated with supersonic travel. One important driver for the higher travel cost is the increase in fuel consumption for an SST due to higher cruise speeds. Even though the new SSTs in development should be more fuel-efficient than SSTs of the past, comparing to a subsonic aircraft flying the same routes, an SST that burns more fuel while having fewer passengers (pax) on board per trip yields significantly higher fuel burn per passenger for these operations. However, due to the higher ticket costs and other limitations such as noise and emissions, supersonic commercial operation is not expected to capture a large portion of the aviation market. This means that in the broader scope of global aviation, the effect of increased fuel burn per pax on fleet-level carbon dioxide (CO \(_{2}\) ) emissions is unknown. Also, due to uncertainties in the effectiveness of sonic boom reduction technologies, it remains unclear whether supersonic over-land flight will be permitted in the future. This study formulates a methodology that employs a bottom-up approach for estimating the demand for supersonic commercial operations in the coming decades, using only publicly available subsonic baseline-fleet data. The scope of this work focuses specifically on the supersonic commercial aviation market and does not consider the supersonic business jet market. The constraints and limitations identified while using publicly available data is key to understanding the data requirements for executing market assessment studies of this type. The bottom-up methodology for demand estimation is implemented, and the environmental impact of the estimated market is determined. The results identify a supersonic commercial flight demand of 34–776 daily, global flights in 2035, growing to 52–1164 in 2050, corresponding to low and high demand scenarios, respectively. These fleets will contribute approximately 1.43–28.25 megatonnes (MT) of CO \(_{2}\) to global aviation emissions in 2035, growing to 2.20–42.50 MT of CO \(_{2}\) in 2050. These emissions in 2035 and 2050 represent a 0.16–3.08% and 0.24–4.63% increase in CO \(_{2}\) emissions with respect to the 2018 global subsonic commercial aviation fleet.

  • Methods of the wall interference reduction at low supersonic velocities in
           wind tunnels
    • Abstract: Abstract The paper describes the research aimed at reducing wall interference in wind tunnels at low supersonic velocities. The results of such wind tunnel tests are often affected by wave perturbations generated by the model and reflected from the test section walls. This research describes the methods that can effectively reduce the wave reflection from the wall. A numerical investigation is presented that includes a novel boundary condition that eliminates disadvantages of previously considered methods. The numerical study was conducted in the frame of electronic wind tunnel concept and ANSYS CFX software. The numerical investigation showed that the effect of shock wave reflection could be reduced using a new type of boundary condition that is a combination of perforated walls and a controlled boundary layer.

  • CFD-based prediction of wall-pressure spectra under a turbulent boundary
           layer with adverse pressure gradient
    • Abstract: Abstract A model of the spectrum of wall-pressure fluctuations under a turbulent boundary layer based on an analytical solution of the Poisson equation is presented. This model is suited for aeroacoustic prediction based on CFD-extracted flow information but requires statistical properties of the boundary-layer turbulence that are not resolved in steady-state simulations and need to be modelled. For this reason, this paper uses Lattice-Boltzmann (DNS-LBM) and Navier-Stokes Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS-NS) of an airfoil in a wind-tunnel jet to investigate the link between turbulence and wall-pressure statistics and validate the assumptions made in the application of the analytical model. The use of input from two numerical simulation methods allows generalizing the results of the analytical model.

  • A meso-mechanical material model describing a crash behavior of 2D plain
           weave fabric composites
    • Abstract: Abstract In composite aircraft structures, woven carbon-fiber-reinforced composites are used as elements of the boxes to mitigate damage during crash events and provide a measure of protection for the passengers against abrupt decelerations. Due to their multi-scale damage effects and complex coupling between failure mechanisms, despite years of extensive works of researchers around the world, a complete and validated methodology for predicting crushing behavior of woven composite structures has not yet been achieved. In the present paper, experimental and numerical investigations were conducted. The principal contribution is to model and adapt failure mechanisms; fragmentation and kink-bandings, for plain weave fabric CFRP composites, within an advanced numerical model to predict the quasi-static crush behavior of hat-shape cross-section coupons. A meso-scale model, which accounts for intralaminar damage, implemented as a user subroutine VUMAT in Abaqus/Explicit was developed and used. Eight layers of stacked solid elements model were used with saw teeth type and 45° chamfer-type triggering mechanisms to ensure a continuous stable crushing mode of failure. A comparison with experimental and existing numerical model Abq_Ply_Fabric results confirms the computational tool’s accuracy.

  • Numerical position optimization of an over-the-wing mounted engine
    • Abstract: Abstract The Collaborative Research Center 880 is investigating different technologies and configurative variants for the purpose of short take-off and landing (STOL) capabilities, ranging from high-lift systems with Coandӑ flaps to unusual but potentially more efficient engine arrangements. The present study focuses on the reference configuration 3 (REF3). This configuration is characterized by an UHBR over-the-wing nacelle (OWN) located above the wing trailing edge. Starting from the wing/body configuration the installation effects of the OWN were investigated. A fully automatized surrogate based optimization was used to evaluate the impact of an engine position variation in vertical and horizontal direction to observe fundamental aerodynamic interactions between wing and OWN in cruise flight conditions. Due to the presence of OWN and pylon, a distinct disturbance on the wing upper surface could be observed leading to significant interference effects. Nevertheless, the overall cruise drag of REF3 could be improved by 37 drag counts or nearly 11% due to the position optimization.

  • Blade element momentum new methodology and wind tunnel test performance
           evaluation for the UAS-S45 Bàlaam propeller
    • Abstract: Abstract The evolution of aircraft is closely linked to the study and improvement of propulsion systems. Determining the propulsion performance is a real challenge in aircraft modelling and design. In addition to theory-based approaches, experimental procedures are used to obtain a good estimation of propulsion performance. To evaluate piston-propeller propulsion, several experimental tests are required that can be very demanding in terms of time and money. This paper presents a procedure to estimate the performance of a propeller from a numerical approach using an improved blade element momentum theory. The methodology used rotation effect model and a high angle of attack lift coefficient correction model to increase the accuracy of the results. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was also implemented. Polyhedral meshing and the realisable k–ε turbulence model were applied to accurately describe the flow pattern around the propeller. Thus, the Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes equations were solved using ANSYS FLUENT software. These methods were applied on the UAS-S45 propeller designed and manufactured by Hydra Technologies in Mexico. An extensive investigation was performed for several flight conditions in terms of altitude and airspeed with the objective of determining the thrust coefficient, power coefficient and efficiency of the propeller. The CFD and blade element momentum theory results were compared with experimental data acquired from wind tunnel tests performed at the LARCASE Price-Païdoussis wind tunnel. The results of this comparison demonstrated that our approach is highly accurate.

  • A CFD benchmark of active flow control for buffet prevention
    • Abstract: Abstract This paper will present the main results of the aerodynamic design and analysis for flow control applied to trailing edge of wings and profiles. This work has been conducted in the framework of the European project AFLoNext aiming at developing technologies allowing for an improvement of the performance and loads situation in the operational domain. The technologies are expected to provide an increase in aerodynamic efficiency and a structural weight reduction for the design flight conditions with a potential for 1–2% fuel savings and corresponding emission reduction. Numerical simulations are performed on 2D and 3D test cases. Where available, a comparison with experimental data is performed. High-speed flow is considered, to investigate a transonic configuration representative of cruise conditions. Trailing edge devices (TED) such as fluidic Gurney flaps or micro-jets for circulation control are used for assessing the possibility of delaying the buffet onset or increasing the maximum achievable lift, thus extending the flight envelope of an aircraft. The purpose of the present paper is to present the result of the work performed by the different partners involved in the project.

  • Evaluation of an advanced slung load control system for piloted cargo
    • Abstract: Abstract Helicopter operations with externally slung loads are highly demanding for the flight crew. As the pilot does not have a direct view of the load, assistance is required from an additional crew member to achieve operational requirements (e.g., for load handling to achieve precise load positioning). An automatic load stabilization and positioning system for cargo operations has been designed with the aim to reduce pilot workload, damp load pendulum motion and to improve the load positioning performance. This system uses the concept of load-motion feedback to the rotor control. To avoid degradation of Handling Qualities (HQs), as found in previous investigations, a function has been developed that monitors pilot control inputs. Dependent on the amplitude and duration of pilot control stick deflection, the feedback signal for slung load damping is blended between two different gain sets. One set provides improved HQs during piloted control and one set provides good load damping when the pilot is passive. A further novel aspect is the evaluation of an automatic load control system using a Translational Rate Command as a method of helicopter control. A piloted simulation study has been conducted using this advanced load control system with automatic load stabilization and positioning. Three test pilots evaluated the system in different control law configurations using a Mission Task Element simulating an external load cargo operation. HQs and pilot workload were evaluated using the Cooper-Harper Rating Scale and NASA Task Load Index, respectively. The results of the study show that improved HQs and reduced pilot workload in combination with improved task performance can be achieved with the advanced slung load control system.

  • Damage detection and localisation of CMCs by means of electrical health
    • Abstract: Abstract Carbon-based composites such as C/C-SiC are used in thermal protection systems for atmospheric re-entry. The electrical properties of this semiconductor material can be used for health monitoring, as electrical resistivity changes with damage, strain, and temperature. In this work, electrical resistance measurements are used to detect damage in a thermal protection system made of C/C-SiC. This can be done in-situ. Damage experiments with \(320\,\hbox {mm}\,\times \,120\,\hbox {mm}\,\times \,3\hbox { mm}\) panel shaped samples were conducted with a multiplexer switching unit to determine up to 288 electrical resistance and voltage measurements per cycle time and spatially resolved. The change in resistance is an indicator for damage, and with the use of post-processing algorithms, the location of the damage can be determined. With these data, inhomogeneous temperatures can be accorded for and damage can be detected. This method reacts even to small damages where less than 0.02% of the monitored surface is damaged. A localisation with a deviation from the real defect of less than 8% in sample width and 17% in sample length is presented.

  • Assessment of the efficiency of an active winglet concept for a long-range
    • Abstract: Abstract This paper presents the analysis of an active winglet concept applied to a long-range aircraft. The winglet is actuated along the longitudinal axis to control its cant angle. Due to aeroelastic effects, the wing twist changes and therefore impacts aircraft performance. As a consequence, this technology offers the opportunity to optimize aircraft performance throughout the flight. This ability will be evaluated using high-fidelity coupled aerodynamic and structural computations. The consideration of the wing flexibility and the impact of the winglet on the wing shape contributes to more accurate aerodynamic predictions. First, the winglet geometry is optimized for the cruise condition using surrogate models. The designed winglet reduces the drag with a limited impact on loads while ensuring the capability to change the wing tip twist through the control of the cant angle. Then, a mission analysis is performed to assess the benefits of the technology on a variety of flight conditions.

  • Design of a pulsed jet actuator for separation control
    • Abstract: Abstract A pulsed jet actuator for separation control has been developed for application in a real-scale wind tunnel experiment with focus on separation behind the pylon-wing junction. This paper covers the last steps of hardware design and testing on the way to a successful demonstration of flow control at the pylon-wing junction. The concept of the actuator is based on fluidic technology and applies pulsed blowing without the help of moving parts. Design parameters are given by numerical simulations of the experimental application case and are validated in ground test. Results of these ground tests are presented and parameters for wind tunnel test settings are derived. The further evaluation of ground test results yields a relation of momentum coefficient, supply mass flow and wind tunnel velocities. It is shown that for the given wind tunnel experiment levels of constant momentum coefficient approximately coincide with levels of constant velocity ratio. All requirements with respect to flow control parameters and model geometry can be satisfied with the presented design, paving the way for a successful demonstration of flow control in a large-scale wind tunnel test.

  • Reynolds number and wind tunnel wall effects on the flow field around a
           generic UHBR engine high-lift configuration
    • Abstract: Abstract RANS simulations of a generic ultra-high bypass ratio engine high-lift configuration were conducted in three different environments. The purpose of this study is to assess small scale tests in an atmospheric closed test section wind tunnel regarding transferability to large scale tests in an open-jet wind tunnel. Special emphasis was placed on the flow field in the separation prone region downstream from the extended slat cut-out. Validation with wind tunnel test data shows an adequate agreement with CFD results. The cross-comparison of the three sets of simulations allowed to identify the effects of the Reynolds number and the wind tunnel walls on the flow field separately. The simulations reveal significant blockage effects and corner flow separation induced by the test section walls. By comparison, the Reynolds number effects are negligible. A decrease of the incidence angle for the small scale model allows to successfully reproduce the flow field of the large scale model despite severe wind tunnel wall effects.

  • Long-term application potential of urban air mobility complementing public
           transport: an upper Bavaria example
    • Abstract: Abstract In this paper, the required models and methods to analyze and quantify the potential demand for urban air mobility (UAM) complementing public transport and possible impacts were defined and applied to the Munich Metropolitan region. An existing agent-based transport model of the study area were used and extended to cover socio-demographic changes up to the year 2030 and intermodal UAM services. An incremental logit model for UAM was derived to simulate demand for this new mode. An airport access model was developed as well. Three different UAM networks with different numbers of vertiports were defined. Sensitivity studies of ticket fare and structure, flying vehicle cruise speed, passenger process times at vertiports and different Urban Air Mobility networks sizes were performed. For the reference case, UAM accounts for a modal share of 0.5%. The absolute UAM demand is concentrated on very short routes; hence, UAM vehicle flight speed variation shows low UAM demand impacts. Kilometer-based fare, number of UAM vehicles per vertiport and passenger process times at vertiports show a significant impact on UAM demand.

  • Closed-loop MIMO data-driven attitude control design for a multirotor UAV
    • Abstract: Abstract In this paper, the problem of tuning the attitude control system of a multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is tackled and a data-driven approach is proposed. With respect to previous work, the data used to tune the controller gains is collected in flight during closed-loop experiments. Furthermore, the simultaneous tuning of roll and pitch attitude control loops is demonstrated, thus paving the way to MIMO data-driven attitude control design. Simulation results confirmed that a MIMO controller allows rejecting undesired coupling effects that affect the performance of a standard decoupled controller usually employed in autopilots for multirotor UAVs. Finally, the results based on experimental work carried out on a quadrotor UAV show that a good level of performance can be achieved in typical operating conditions with the proposed tuning method.

  • Evaluation of the noise impact of flap-tip fences installed on laminar
    • Abstract: Abstract The aeroacoustics of laminar wings and the noise abatement provided by flap-tip fences are studied experimentally on a scaled model installed in the closed test section of a subsonic wind tunnel. The activity has been developed under an international project funded by the European Union through the H2020 Framework Program. The model reproduces an innovative regional aircraft mounting aft-engines and adopting the Natural Laminar Flow concept. Both take-off and landing settings are tested for several combinations of wind tunnel speeds and angles of attack; these configurations being the most critical from the viewpoint of airframe noise generation. A baseline configuration without flap-tip fences is also tested for a comparative study. Noise sources are identified by measuring pressure fluctuations through a phased microphone array. Data are processed using both Conventional Beamforming and CLEAN-SC algorithms to retrieve the sound source maps and the integrated spectra over the areas of interest. Directivity effects are investigated as well by moving the microphone array in different axial positions corresponding to different aircraft polar directivity angles. The wind tunnel data are eventually extrapolated to full scale and projected to flight condition allowing the analysis of the results in terms of Effective Perceived Noise Level (EPNL). Tests provided an extensive characterization of the acoustic behavior of the analyzed model demonstrating the capability of measurements carried out in a non-anechoic environment, to provide reliable data. The longitudinal traversing of the microphones array allowed us to compute, even though qualitatively, the EPNL and thus demonstrated the feasibility of a procedure that can be a reference for the design of future aeroacoustic tests. The effectiveness of the flap-tip fences to successfully reduce the flap side-edge noise has been definitely verified both through the analysis of the acoustic maps retrieved from the beamforming investigation and by the estimation of the overall variation of the EPNL with respect to a baseline reference configuration without low-noise devices.

  • Design of a synthetic jet actuator for flow separation control
    • Abstract: Abstract This paper describes the development of a piezo-electric synthetic jet actuator (SJA) of the AFLoNext project. Active flow—loads and noise control on next generation wing (AFLoNext) is a project within European Union’s 7th Framework Program. One of the main project goals is the application of active flow control (AFC) techniques, such as SJAs and pulsed jet actuators (PJAs) in two different application scenarios to evaluate the potential benefit for retrofit of current aircraft and also for future aircraft designs. This paper is focusing on the SJAs. For large-scale wind tunnel testing, an actuator panel with 84 SJAs including the drive electronics system was designed and pre-tested in a laboratory environment. The performance exceeds 100 m/s with outlet nozzles of 2.5 mm diameter and a span wise clearance of 10 mm. A second actuator design was prepared for the application on the outer wing region and was investigated in a harsh environmental test campaign. Two span wise rows of five actuators were integrated in a panel with 10 × 0.5 mm2 slotted outlet nozzles. With this design also velocities exceeding 100 m/s were measured. The actuators withstand different harsh environmental conditions including extreme temperature, rain, mechanical vibration and shock. With the results of the project, a technology readiness level (TRL) evaluation will conclude the maturity of the technology. Depending on the final test and evaluation results, achievement of TRL4 is expected.

  • Adaptive prediction for ship motion in rotorcraft maritime operations
    • Abstract: Abstract This paper focuses on motion prediction for a ship navigating through sea swell. Ship motion prediction may be useful for helicopter maritime operations, notably for search and rescue missions. An efficient prediction method based on adaptive notch filters is proposed for non stationary perturbations. Classic methods of prediction are reviewed for comparison. An application using real ship motion data is considered in a performance evaluation. Finally, a comparative analysis based on prediction performance and real-time implementation constraints is presented.

  • Aeroelastic behaviour of a wing with over-the-wing mounted UHBR engine
    • Abstract: Abstract The aeroelastic behaviour of a wing with an over-the-wing pylon-mounted ultra-high bypass ratio engine and high-lift devices is studied with a reduced-order model. Wing, pylon and engine structures are reduced separately using the modal approach and described by their natural frequencies and modes. The characteristic aerodynamic loads are investigated with steady and unsteady flow simulations of a two-dimensional profile section. These results indicate possible heave instabilities at strongly negative angles of attack. Three-dimensional effects are taken into account using an adapted lifting line theory according to Prandtl. Due to high circulations resulting from the high-lift systems, the effective angles of attack are in the range of the potential instabilities. The substructures and aerodynamic loads are coupled in modal space. For the wing without three-dimensional effects, the bending instability occurs at the corresponding negative angles of attack. Even though there is potential for improvement, including the three-dimensional effects shifts the endagered area to possible operation points.
