Abstract: Advances in Complex Systems, Volume 21, Issue 01, February 2018.
In complex adaptive systems (CASs), the relaxation based on intra-individual interactions and the adaptation based on sub-individual variations are two fundamental processes entangled to induce great complexity. We analyze the system evolution under multicellular homeostatic regulations coupled with various mutation strategies in computational tumorigenesis as a typical instance to clarify the coupling effect of relaxation and adaptation in CASs. Through visualizing the system dynamics on a synthesized fitness landscape which results from the superposition of the phase diagram and the individual fitness landscape, we entertain a simple theoretical framework that not only helps analyze our simulated multicellular dynamics but is potentially applicable to a broader class of problems in CASs where relaxation and adaptation intertwine. It is stressed that the nonadaptive relaxation process has the essential role in shaping the selective pressure of adaptation as well as in defining the final state of the evolution, whereas it is the rigidity of mutation strategy that determines the complexity of the dynamical process.

Abstract: Advances in Complex Systems, Volume 21, Issue 01, February 2018.
Many real-world networks are known to exhibit facts that counter our knowledge prescribed by the theories on network creation and communication patterns. A common prerequisite in network analysis is that information on nodes and links will be complete because network topologies are extremely sensitive to missing information of this kind. Therefore, many real-world networks that fail to meet this criterion under random sampling may be discarded. In this paper, we offer a framework for interpreting the missing observations in network data under the hypothesis that these observations are not missing at random. We demonstrate the methodology with a case study of a financial trade network, where the awareness of agents to the data collection procedure by a self-interested observer may result in strategic revealing or withholding of information. The non-random missingness has been overlooked despite the possibility of this being an important feature of the processes by which the network is generated. The analysis demonstrates that strategic information withholding may be a valid general phenomenon in complex systems. The evidence is sufficient to support the existence of an influential observer and to offer a compelling dynamic mechanism for the creation of the network.

We introduce a new solution concept, called periodicity, for selecting optimal strategies in strategic form games. This periodicity solution concept yields new insight into nontrivial games. In mixed strategy strategic form games, periodic solutions yield values for the utility function of each player that are equal to the Nash equilibrium ones. In contrast to the Nash strategies, here the payoffs of each player are robust against what the opponent plays. Sometimes, periodicity strategies yield higher utilities, and sometimes the Nash strategies do, but often the utilities of these two strategies coincide. We formally define and study periodic strategies in two player perfect information strategic form games with pure strategies and we prove that every nontrivial finite game has at least one periodic strategy, with nontrivial meaning nondegenerate payoffs. In some classes of games where mixed strategies are used, we identify quantitative features. Particularly interesting are the implications for collective action games, since there the collective action strategy can be incorporated in a purely noncooperative context. Moreover, we address the periodicity issue when the players have a continuum set of strategies available.

Since all the existing real world networks are evolving, the study of traffic dynamics is a challenging task. Avoidance of traffic congestion, system utility maximization and enhancement of network capacity are prominent issues. Network capacity may be improved either by optimizing network topology or enhancing in routing approach. In this context, we propose and design a model of the time-varying data communication networks (TVCN) based on the dynamics of inflowing links. Traffic congestion can be avoided by using a suitable centrality measure, especially betweenness and Eigen vector centralities. If the nodes coming in user’s route are most betweenness central, then that route will be highly congested. Eigen vector centrality is used to find the influence of a node on others. If a node is most influential, then it will be highly congested and considered as least reputed. For that reason, routes are chosen such that the sum of the centralities of the nodes coming in user’s route should be minimum. Furthermore, Kelly’s optimization formulation for a rate allocation problem is used for obtaining optimal rates of distinct users at different time instants and it is found that the user’s path with lowest betweenness centrality and highest reputation will always give maximum rate at the stable point.

In this paper, we explore the relationship between Minimum Feedbackability Set (MFS) and Feedbackability Set (FS) of complex networks and use simulated annealing algorithm to obtain a relatively fast and reliable estimation of the MFS. Then, we implement this method to estimate the MFS of some real-world networks and explore whether the topological features influence the size of MFS. Additionally, we propose an optimal perturbation strategy to enhance the feedbackability of complex networks. Finally, we also research the intricate relationship between the structural properties and the feedbackability of various networks perturbed by optimal and random perturbation strategies.

Statistical properties of software networks have been extensively studied. However, in the previous works, software networks are usually considered as a single-layer network, which cannot capture the authentic characteristics of software since software in its nature should be multilayer. In this paper, we explore the structural properties of the multilayer software network at the class level by progressively merging layers together, where each coupling type such as inheritance, implements, and method call defines a specific layer. A case study in software Tomcat is conducted using a set of 10 measures widely used in complex network literatures. The results show that some structural properties that are widely observed in software network researches can only emerge when several layers are merged together, such as high clustering coefficient, small value of average shortest path length, and high global efficiency. Our study highlights the importance of taking into consideration the multilayer nature of software systems. The results we found can provide valuable insights to our understanding and modeling of the dynamical processes taking place in the design and development of software systems.

To what extent does joint membership in intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) matter for bilateral trade' How and under what conditions do the various types of IGOs — economic, socio-cultural and general purpose — influence bilateral trade between their members' How do complex interdependencies in world trade matter' Existing research tends to examine aggregate joint IGO memberships and has done little to analyze how specific types of IGO membership matter in trade. Using a detailed IGO dataset and a novel network analysis approach called the temporal exponential random graph model, I assess the importance of three main IGO types — economic, socio-cultural and general purpose — in helping members to establish major trading ties. The results provide support for general purpose and socio-cultural IGOs and point to the importance of network phenomena such as popularity, activity and transitivity effects. Moreover, joint economic IGO memberships exhibit slightly more complex relations with bilateral trade. A robustness test reveals that preferential trade agreements are significant in fostering trade, while the World Trade Organization and other economic IGOs such as development banks are not. This paper presents a nuanced way of analyzing IGOs and provides the impetus for the study of complex interdependencies in international trade.

The availability of massive data about sports activities offers nowadays the opportunity to quantify the relation between performance and success. In this study, we analyze more than 6000 games and 10 million events in six European leagues and investigate this relation in soccer competitions. We discover that a team’s position in a competition’s final ranking is significantly related to its typical performance, as described by a set of technical features extracted from the soccer data. Moreover, we find that, while victory and defeats can be explained by the team’s performance during a game, it is difficult to detect draws by using a machine learning approach. We then simulate the outcomes of an entire season of each league only relying on technical data and exploiting a machine learning model trained on data from past seasons. The simulation produces a team ranking which is similar to the actual ranking, suggesting that a complex systems’ view on soccer has the potential of revealing hidden patterns regarding the relation between performance and success.

Scientific collaborations shape ideas as well as innovations and are both the substrate for, and the outcome of, academic careers. Recent studies show that gender inequality is still present in many scientific practices ranging from hiring to peer-review processes and grant applications. In this work, we investigate gender-specific differences in collaboration patterns of more than one million computer scientists over the course of 47 years. We explore how these patterns change over years and career ages and how they impact scientific success. Our results highlight that successful male and female scientists reveal the same collaboration patterns: compared to scientists in the same career age, they tend to collaborate with more colleagues than other scientists, seek innovations as brokers and establish longer-lasting and more repetitive collaborations. However, women are on average less likely to adopt the collaboration patterns that are related with success, more likely to embed into ego networks devoid of structural holes, and they exhibit stronger gender homophily as well as a consistently higher dropout rate than men in all career ages.
