  • Life Between Walls: Race, Subdivision and Lodging Houses in Postwar London

    • Abstract: Four solid walls and a roof over one’s head. These, from an essentialist standpoint, are the minima of homely existence. What happens then under conditions of speculation and subdivision when domestic walls are no longer stable givens, but become flimsy, mobile and contested' Drawing on a rich seam of popular British films from the late 1950s and early ’60s — set in the transitional world of postwar London lodging houses — this paper examines how partition walls refashioned the interior space of the terraced house. Analysis of popular visual culture is supported by archival research centred on local valuation lists, which allow us to read the traces of these sometimes temporary, often illegal structures. The paper argues that partition walls were key to the extraction of value from a declining private rental sector by property traders and landlords. At the same time, these ubiquitous structures formed a series of highly charged thresholds between disparate individuals. Partition walls were instrumental in the ‘spatialisation’ of race in postwar Britain, serving to heighten an awareness of otherness while simultaneously bringing individuals into uncomfortable proximity. Finally, the paper asks how people overcame or lived between these divisions, and how this affected questions of visibility and representation. Published on 2020-03-20 09:13:33

  • Housing and Revolution: From the Dom-Kommuna to the Transitional Type of
           Experimental House (1926–30)

    • Abstract: In the USSR, against the backdrop of political change and social instability in the 1920s, the issue of housing for the masses was addressed by the Association of Contemporary Architects (OSA), under the leadership of Moisey Ginzburg. Their mission was not only to provide a solution to the lack of accommodation in the major cities of the country, but to redefine housing as a framework suited to a society transitioning towards a fully socialised life. The response was developed in three stages of design research, over a period of five years. The initial conceptual phase was formally presented by members of the OSA at the 1926 Comradely Competition, and focused on the housing question, with specific designs for communal houses. The second stage revolved around the scientific and methodological research of the Stroykom, developed in parallel with the designs for the new communal living units. The final stage took material form in six specific buildings, known as transitional-type experimental houses. One of these, the Narkomfin, gained worldwide recognition as a modern prototype of Soviet avant-garde housing, and has been widely researched as a result. However, to date no study has approached all three phases with equal scrutiny and methodology. This article offers a detailed account of the OSA’s experimental design strategies for collective workers’ housing between 1926 and 1930 under Ginzburg’s leadership by examining original sources, as well as analysing and restoring the individual projects at each stage. It provides a new interpretation of the famous Narkomfin House and ideas on the first Soviet avant-garde housing project by reconstructing the complex research context in which the building, in tandem with other projects, was developed. • The Life and Death of Residential Room Types: A Study of Swedish Building
           Plans, 1750–2010

    • Abstract: While the study of building types is a well-known and relatively active research field, the topic of room types is less explored. This article takes a broad approach to spatial categorization, enabling the examination of different types of spaces over longer periods. How do different room types evolve and die' How do the different residential room types relate to each other' Do they act alone or do they follow each other over time' The article looks at the particular evolution and development of Swedish residential room types and is based on the study of plans of 2,340 Swedish buildings from about 1750 to 2010. Six themes emerged from this study: thresholds of birth and extinction, abruptive change, the relation between absent and present room types, contagious types, different temporal scales and the stabilization of prototypical sets. • White Whale: The Aquarium and Reptile House at the Turin Zoo and the
           Architecture of Enzo Venturelli (1955–1965)

    • Abstract: In Enzo Venturelli’s architectural oeuvre, the relationship between his overlooked built work and his better known drawn and written production is problematic and currently under-studied. Venturelli’s design of the acquario-rettilario (aquarium and reptile house) (1958–60) for the Turin Zoo appeared midway through his career, part of the architectural milieu of the mid-1950s in which the zoo itself was conceived. This article analyses the building’s history and design within the context of Venturelli’s writings, projects, exhibitions and contacts with artists and architects between the late 1950s and early 1960s. The acquario-rettilario constitutes a significant case for reconsidering Venturelli as both a radical architectural theoretician and a practising building designer. Published on 2019-12-20 11:02:39
  • Resilient Matters: The Cathedral of Syracuse as an Architectural

    • Abstract: While every material artifact engages with time on various levels, palimpsests stitch together layers from several periods simultaneously. By physically expressing the passage of time, architectural palimpsests explicitly raise questions about the historicity of buildings. These questions concern cultural heritage studies and architectural historiography, and reverberate in renovation projects and design commissions. As yet, in architecture there is no theory that covers in a consistent manner the way palimpsests express historicity. This article approaches the diachronic essence of the architectural palimpsest, starting from the original use of the term ‘palimpsest’ in paleography. It distinguishes a set of features by which to explore buildings that can be labelled as palimpsests. By discussing the Cathedral of Syracuse through this lens, the article illustrates its various palimpsestic features and shows how an architectural palimpsest can embody resilience. • Experiencing the Gothic Style

    • Abstract: Eighteenth-century French accounts of Gothic churches are testimonies of both negative preconceptions about the Gothic style formed through reading and actual positive experiences of Gothic buildings. While Goethe at Strasbourg Cathedral reconciled the discrepancy between preconceived opinion and opinion based on experience by referring to history, many 18th-century French architects avoided any historicist interpretation after they visited churches. They continued to express a dislike for Gothic ornament, but also found they could admire the spaciousness of Gothic churches. Jacques-Germain Soufflot, who analysed the church of Notre Dame in Paris by moving through it, suggested disregarding ‘entirely the chimerical and bizarre ornaments of the Goths’, in favour of experiencing the church’s spatial qualities. This article argues that we can only understand how ideas about the Gothic style changed if we study them from the point of view of the observer of these buildings. This turnaround happened precisely through experience, which allowed 18th-century architects to reconcile their conflicting feelings. By moving through the buildings, they came to understand the idiosyncrasies of the Gothic, from its ornamentation to its spatiality. Beginning with Soufflot’s lecture of 1741, ‘Mémoire sur l’architecture gothique’, this article analyses similar experiences of 18th-century architects and writers who focussed not on historicization (like Goethe did) but on the ahistorical aspects of the Gothic. It thus aims to unveil the complexity of the workings of style. Published on 2019-12-16 10:27:00

  • Revisiting Louis Roelandt’s Aula Academica: Interior Decoration and
Visitor Experience in Early 19th-Century Belgian Architecture

    • Abstract: Since the inauguration of the Aula Academica in Ghent in 1826, its grand proportions and lavish decoration have impressed visitors. An examplar of tasteful, neoclassical architecture, the university building soon joined the list of Belgium’s canonical buildings. The Aula was the first commission of Louis Roelandt (1786–1864), a promising architect who had just returned from training in Paris at the École spéciale d’architecture under Charles Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine. Through a detailed analysis of the design process, this article examines how Roelandt’s design forms part of an international architectural culture that understood not just the principles of composition but how composition combines with the ways an interior is used. Drawing on the example of a national pantheon commemorating important people, Roelandt created an ensemble in which architectural composition, interior decoration and the visitor’s path of movement contribute to the expression of architectural character. • Style: Notes on the Transformation of a Concept

    • Abstract: Style has been a key concept in architectural discourse since the 18th century, yet its meaning is far from unequivocal. This essay traces the shifting meanings attributed to style in German architectural thinking from the mid-18th to the early 19th century. Reading and discussing texts by J.J. Winckelmann, J.W. Goethe, C.C. Hirschfeld, A.W. Schlegel, H. Hübsch, and F. Eisenlohr, I study the multifarious uses to which style was put in this period and look at the effects these uses had on architecture.
