  • The investigation of the relationship between physical activity levels and
obesity of academic staff at Nigde Omer Halisdemir University

    • Authors: Rüçhan İRİ; Zait Burak AKTUĞ, Serkan İBİŞ
Abstract: Aim: It is a well-known fact that physical activity plays an effective role in preventing obesity, which is considered one of the most important health problems today. The first objective of the study is to determine the relationship between obesity and physical activity levels (PAL) of the academic staff, who spend most of their time sitting at a table, and the second objective is to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP) body fat mass (BFM) and PAL in terms of gender. Methods: 355 voluntary academic staff working at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University participated in the current study. PALs of the academic staff were determined through the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the BMI, BFM and BFP by body analysis system and their systolic-diastolic blood pressure through the automatic blood pressure instrument. After the obtained data were analyzed by SPSS program, Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine the difference between sexes, BMI, BFM, BFP and PAL, Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between BMI, BFM, BFP and PAL.Results: As a result of statistical analysis, there was no statistically significant relationship between BMI, BFM, BFP and PAL. It was determined that BMIs of male academic staff were significantly higher than female ones, whereas BFP of female academic staff were significantly higher than male ones “p<0.05”. It was also found that 77% of male academic staff, 32% of female academic staff were overweight. Moreover, 15% of male academic staff and 5% of female academic staff were above the cardiovascular risk limit of systolic blood pressure. In addition, female academic staff have low PALs, whereas male academic staff have high PALs.Conclusion: As a conclusion, it can be stated that the PALs are very low due to the fact that the academic staff spend most of their time on their desks, and thus depending on the sedentary lifestyle they have a high risk of such diseases as obesity, high blood pressure, etc.

  • Turkish adaptation of the sport motivation scale II (SMS-II): Procedures
           of validity and reliability

    • Authors: Kubilay ÖCAL; Derya SAKALLI
Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was put forward the procedures related with the adaption of the Sport Motivation Scale II (SMS-II) developed by Pelletier (2013) into the Turkish Culture. Validation and reliability analysis were also conducted for the scale that consists of 18 items in 6 main factors. Material and Methods: The Scale was applied (78 female and 127 male) 205 athletes from 14 sports branches. A number of factors and correlations of items were tested with Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) with principal component and oblique rotation method suggested for simplifying the structure of predetermined factors. That model was tested with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) in AMOS 18 according to the criterion of fit indices given in the literature. Results: Total scale explains the 66% of total variances. Factors loadings vary from 0.57 to 0.94. Cronbach's alpha for the total scale was found 0.76 and 0.72 for intrinsic, 0.61 for integrated, 0.81 for identified, 0.55 for introjected, 0.73 for external, 0.72 for amotivated. Correlation between factors varies from low (0.14) to high (0.69). CFA results provides the fit indices as X²=181.3, df=120, X²/df=1.5, RMSA= 0.05, CFI=0.96, NFI=0.88, NNFI=0.96 with 18 items and 6 factors. Conclusion: The fit indexes of the scale are an acceptable level. There is a strong correlation between the results of this study and the result of original scale developed by Pelletier (2013). Results show that Turkish version of Sport Motivation Scale II is conceptually and structurally valid and reliable measurement for Turkish athletes.

  • Semiological analysis of sports related advertisements featured on Tv or

    • Authors: Ali ÇEVİK; Hakan ÜNAL
Abstract: Aim: The purpose of this study is to analyse 5 of the sports-related advertisements featured on TV or online between 2013 and 2015 in terms of semiology. Material and Methods: Hypotheses posed for the study were tested utilizing semiological analysis proposed by Barthes. Roland Barthes proposed three methods for analyzing messages: coded iconic message, non-coded iconic message, and linguistic message. The iconic indicators will be analysed using these three methods along with consideration of denotation, connotation, myth, metaphor, and metonymy. All these aspects of the advertisements will be taken into consideration holistically. Data included sports-related advertisements, and it was selected from the up to date channel list from 2013 to 2015 of Türksat 4A (a Turkish satellite broadcasting company) and video sharing websites. Of these channel list, only top rating Turkish channels were selected, which are as follow: TRT 1, Show TV, Star TV, Atv, Kanal D, Tv8, Fox TV, NTV, NTV Spor, and CNN Türk. Results and Conclusion: In conclusion, 5 sports-related advertisements of the following companies were analyzed in terms of their verbal messages: Türk Telekom, Turkish Airlines, Lassa, İntegral Forex, and Skechers. It was found that coded and non-coded messages included denotations and connotations regarding certain forms of representation, and female representation in sports-related advertisements was very low. It was found successful to present new services, benefits for the customer, safety, teamwork, community support for sports, and new technologies in advertisement for the identity of the company and strength of the brand

  • The study of the somatotypes of the Turkish National Rafting Team

    • Authors: Vedat AYAN; Selami YÜKSEK, Fatih BEKTAŞ, Fatih GÜR, Burak KURAL
Abstract: Aim: In the study, it was aimed to determine the somatotype characteristics of the male athletes of the Turkish National Rafting Team. 8 male rafting athletes from the Turkish National Rafting Team voluntarily participated in the study during the national team camp in Rize before 2015 World Rafting Champs-Indonesia. Material and Methods: The age, height, weight, skinfold thickness, circumference, and width measurements of the athletes participated in the study were taken at the Performance Lab of Physical Education and Sports Academy, Karadeniz Technical University. Heath-Carter method was used to determine their somatotypes. The statistical analyses of the measurements were carried out by using SPSS 13. Results: The mean values of the participant male rafting athletes of the Turkish National Rafting Team (n=8) were found as follows; mean age 21 years old; mean height 175.68±3.32 cm; mean body weight 76.00±7.96kg. The mean values of the somatotype components of the athletes were found as endomorphy 2.23±0.88, mesomorphy 5.04±0.91, ectomorphy 1.92±0.94. Although there are various studies on determining somatotype characteristics in Sports Science, those related to rafting are limited in number. Conclusion: We are of the opinion that our study, in addition to determining the somatotype characteristics of the male rafting athletes of the Turkish National Rafting Team, will also contribute to the studies carried out in this field.

  • Elite athletes' characteristics in esthetic sports related to body
composition, physiology, bone mineral density and nutrition

Abstract: Aim: Nutritional deficiencies occur in elite athletes in aesthetic branches who suffer from intensive training programs and strict weight control. Increased disability, the weakening of the immune system, menstrual disorders and increased risk of bone fracture due to abnormal bone mineralization impair the quality of life and threaten the health of athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine body composition, nutrition and hydration status, bone mineral density levels and some physiological parameters in athletes interested in aesthetic sports. Material and Methods: The study was participated by a total of 15 healthy artistic gymnasts, ice skaters and ballet dancers aged 18 and over and 10 individuals of similar age and physical qualities as the control group. The body composition, resting metabolic rate, hydration status, bone mineral density, nutritional habit and menstruation period of the athletes were assessed and some health parameters in blood about bone metabolism, anaemia and infection were evaluated. Results: It was found that the athletes’ daily energy consumption and dietary intake of vitamin-mineral levels, vitamin D, Ca and Fe, are inadequate for especially female athletes. The fat ratio was higher and carbohydrate ratio was lower than the recommended daily energy distribution of athletes, 2/3 of athletes were dehydrated. The athletes did not have menstrual irregularities and eating disorder behaviours. The highest bone mineral density was in athletes, especially in gymnastics, while the lowest was in the control group. Conclusion: Although the athletes have higher values than the controls, due to insufficient energy, low carbohydrate and calcium intake and low bone density of female athletes, especially female athletes are suggested keeping under control for risk of female athlete triad.
