  • Investigating the effectiveness on educational attainment and behaviour of
           Commando Joe’s: a school-based, military-ethos intervention

    • Authors: Helen E. Mills, Melitta McNarry, Gareth Stratton, Kelly A. Mackintosh
Abstract: Objectives: A military-ethos intervention can enhance engagement in learning and educational attainment. However, such programmes have typically been delivered in a residential setting. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a twelve-month, military-ethos physical activity intervention on educational attainment, attendance and behaviour. Methods: Seven primary (five intervention) and five secondary schools (four intervention) were recruited and 228 primary school (152 intervention; 9.8±0.4 yrs) and 167 secondary school pupils (97 intervention; 13.8±0.4 yrs) participated.  Attainment, attendance and behaviour ratings were collected at baseline, 3-, 6- and 12-months and analysed using multilevel modelling. Results: Significant intervention effects were found at 3 months for Maths, 3 and 6 months in English, 6 months for attendance and across time for both positive social and problem behaviours. Effects were independent of sex and school level. Conclusions: Findings support the utility of the Commando Joe’s intervention as a whole-school strategy to enhance educational and behavioural outcomes.

  • Measure of Physical Activity for Health Promotion and Education Research

    • Authors: Adam Knowlden
Abstract: Objectives: Accurate and reliable measurement of physical activity (PA) is critical for accuracy of health education and promotion research and evaluation. In terms of research, PA measurement allows researchers to model the correlates and determinants of PA. From an evaluation perspective, measurement allows researchers to gauge the efficacy of interventions designed to increase or sustain PA. A variety of direct and indirect PA monitoring methods are available to researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this research was to review methods of measuring physical activity over time and identify best practices for application. Methods: A total of 21 articles were extracted from Medline, CINHAL, and ERIC databases for this review. Monitoring techniques analyzed included doubly labeled water, indirect calorimetry, motion sensors, global positioning system, global geographic information systems, heart rate monitors, direct observation, activity logs, and self-report questionnaires. Strengths and limitations, application, cost of the data collection, and the accuracy of the resulting data was elucidated. Results: PA is an important domain of health promotion and health education research. Accurate and reliable measurement of PA is critical to increasing the internal validity of health education interventions. Conclusions: Ultimately, the research questions that underlie a research project should determine the measurement tool researchers apply. In making a final decision, expertise, resources, and funding of the program must be considered. Even the most advanced monitoring tools have limitations. Researchers must be cognizant of the limitations of the measurement techniques they apply and make efforts to reduce biases associated with their selected measurement method.

  • Selecting Hip Strengthening Exercises for Healthy Aging

    • Authors: Iván Chulvi-Medrano, Esteban Martínez-Ballester, Laura Masiá-Tortosa
Abstract: Muscle strength is necesary for the elderly population, both to preserve their health and prevent injuries and illnesses, and to maintain their physical independence. With regard to this last point, lower-limb strength is essential, and it has been suggested that among the large muscle groups the gluteal muscles are the most important. Gluteus strength is necessary for elderly people and different exercises yield differences in EMG data for the gluteal group. Based on these results, resistance training exercises can be prescribed for older people from among a range of structural and functional exercises.

  • Somatotype, Body Composition and Explosive Power of Athlete and

    • Authors: Sukanta Saha
Abstract: The aim of thisstudy was to identify the effect of somatotype and body composition variableson explosive power of college level men students. The sample consisted of youngcollege students (n= 500) divided into two groups: athletes undergoing Bachelorof Physical Education course (n= 250) aged 23.86 ± 0.36 years; and non-athletes,college students do not take part regular physical activities (n=250) aged 22.16± 0.88 years. The somatotype was assessed using the Heath & Carter method. Assessingbody composition of the subject various anthropometric measurements were taken.Sargent vertical jump test was used to assess leg explosive power. The measureswere compared between the two groups using the Student t-test for independentsamples. The two groups differed significantly in terms of body weight, % bodyfat, lean body mass, % skeletal muscle mass and somatotype. The vertical jumpwas positively significantly correlated with % skeletal muscle mass, lean bodymass, mesomorphy and ectomorphy components of somatotype; on the other handbody weight, height, % body fat, body surface area and endomorphy component ofsomatotype significantly negatively correlated.  In conclusion, somatotype and body compositionvariables are important factors in determining leg explosive power. Keywords:Vertical jump; % body fat; Lean body mass.

  • The Physical Activity Levels and Play Behaviours of Children with Special
           Needs: An Exploratory Cross-sectional Study.

    • Authors: Daniel David Bingham, Lynne M Boddy, Nicola D Ridgers, Gareth Stratton
Abstract: Objectives:This study examined whether children with special needs (SN) achieve current physical activity (PA) guidelines and identify whether habitual PA levels, recess PA and play behaviours differed between different SN’s.Methods:Twenty-five children (aged 11.16 ± 2.37) had PA monitored over 7-days using accelerometry. Recess behaviours were observed using the System for Observing Children’s Activity and Relationships during Play (SOCARP). Participants’ SN(s) were categorised as either autism (AUS), behavioural and emotional needs (BEN) or any other SN (OTH).Results:Children took part in 46.88 minutes ± 9.10 of MVPA. BEN children (65.55 min ± 20.50) were more active than AUS (43.40 minutes ± 27.50). AUS children spent more time playing alone and less time in groups then the BEN and OTH groups (p≤ 0.05).Conclusions:Only 3 children met PA guidelines, with all 3 having BEN. PA levels and play behaviours differ by SN.

  • Psychosocial Predictors of Change in Physical Activity and Quality of Life
in the PESSOA Program: A School-based Intervention Study

    • Authors: António Moreno Quaresma, António Labisa Palmeira, Sandra Silva Martins, Cláudia Sofia Minderico, Luís Bettencourt Sardinha
Abstract: Background: Only 36% of 10-11 years Portuguese youngsters meet the recommendations of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and they decrease progressively to 4% in the ages of 16-17 years. The aim of this study is to analyze if self-determination theory and social support variables predict change in physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QoL) in a school-based intervention study – PESSOA Program, which is a cluster randomized controlled trial that addresses mediator variables within an ecological model. Methods: Our sample was comprised of 1052 youngsters, aged 10-16 years (M=12.50±1.11) allocated to control (n=207), intervention1 (n=365) and intervention2 (n=480) groups. Personal and social indicators of psychosocial health were assessed. Predictor variables were selected through hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: Main results were: a) increases in perceived parental and peer support accounted for the most of the PA positive changes; b) positive changes in PA were associated with increases in autonomous motivation; c) increased perceived parental and peer support, and relatedness, accounted for the most of the QoL positive changes; and, d) competence was the main predictor of positive changes in QoL. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated that positive changes in PA and QoL were predicted through the increased perceived social support, the fulfillment of general basic psychological needs and, the endorsement of more autonomous forms of motivation toward PA.Keywords: Psychosocial predictors, Self-determination Theory, Physical activity, Quality of life, PESSOA Program
