  • Connecting Energy Availability and Iron Deficiency with Bone Health:
           Implications for the Female Athlete
    • Authors: Goldstein; Erica R.; Fukuda, David H.
Abstract: imageAn inability to meet the energy demands of sport and support physiological functioning can be the result of chronic energy deficiency. Resting energy expenditure, endocrine disruption, menstrual disturbances, and poor bone health are outcomes of low energy availability (LEA). Iron deficiency (ID) can be an outcome of inadequate intake as well as hepcidin activity and its role in the development of exercise-associated ID and anemia. The purpose of this article is to discuss the effects of ID and anemia in combination with LEA and the implications for a female athlete's bone health.

  • Exercise Benefits and Recommendations for the 6-Week Postpartum Period
    • Authors: Loewen; Brandon; Collum, Connor; Ryan, Greg A.
Abstract: imageThe postpartum period is the stage after childbirth and is associated with many physical and psychological changes. Exercise has been shown to be beneficial for both the physical and psychological health of a new mother. Previous literature has examined the effect of both aerobic and resistance training in this period; however, there have been no clear guidelines and recommendations provided. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review the benefits of exercise in the postpartum period, and to provide guidelines and a sample 6-week aerobic and resistance training program after exercise initiation after delivery and medical clearance. A video abstract describing this article can be found in Supplemental Digital Content 1 (see video,

  • Historical and Social Considerations of Strength Training for Female
    • Authors: Shurley; Jason; Felkar, Victoria; Greviskes, Lindsey; Todd, Jan
Abstract: imageFemale athletes may be hesitant to fully engage in the weight room. Common concerns include violating social norms through their muscularity, or a lack of competence in strength training. These concerns are rooted in historical efforts to constrain the intensity of female competition and traditional societal assumptions about the attributes of femininity. This work seeks to help strength coaches understand the historical and social background of female concerns about strength training and provides a psychological framework that may be useful in helping female athletes overcome their trepidation about the weight room.

  • Injury Prevention Programs in Youth: A Narrative Review Targeting Females
    • Authors: Sommerfield; Lesley M.; Harrison, Craig B.; Whatman, Chris S.; Maulder, Peter S.
Abstract: imageInjury prevention (IP) programs have been developed to reduce sports-related injuries and risk factors for injuries and to improve athletic performance in youth. This review aims to provide an overview of IP programs in youth females, males, and both sexes and then provide recommendations for those working with female athletes. Independent IP training programs with a high session attendance, of greater than 20 minutes in length, and completed 2–3 times per week have shown the greatest benefit. In addition, programs with multiple components, progressed according to the technical competency of the participants, are the most beneficial. For a video abstract of this article, see Supplemental Digital Content 1,

  • Load Carriage for Female Military Personnel
    • Authors: Orr; Robin M.; Pope, Rodney P.; O'Shea, Simone; Knapik, Joseph J.
Abstract: imageThis article reviews the physiological, biomechanical, and health impacts of load carriage on the female soldier and includes issues impacting on the female athlete and hence female soldier. Physiological factors (e.g., mass, strength, and aerobic endurance) and biomechanical factors (e.g., forward trunk lean and step length) have the potential to increase the energy cost of load carriage and injury risk. Optimal load carriage conditioning guidelines are presented while considering issues specific to the female soldier, including the female athlete triad and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, which can likewise reduce performance and increase injury risk.

  • Nutrition for Adolescent Female Team Sport Athletes: A Review
    • Authors: Sharples; Alice; Baker, Dane; Black, Katherine
Abstract: imageAdequate nutrition generally promotes training adaptations and thus optimal performance. Adolescence is characterized by a pubescence growth spurt, increasing energy and nutrient needs. Most team sports literature focuses on male athletes, with little on adolescent female team sports. Adolescent female athletes are at an increased risk of inadequate energy, and micronutrient intakes because of the pursuit of high fitness levels, and society pressures. This may cause hormonal irregularities, delayed development, poor bone health, and increased risk of injury. This review synthesizes information on the nutritional needs of adolescent female team sport players for performance and health.

  • Nutritional Considerations for the Female Vegan Athlete
    • Authors: Schoenfeld; Melody L.
Abstract: imageAccording to the top trends in prepared foods 2017 market research report, the number of U.S. consumers following a vegan lifestyle has jumped from 1% of the population in 2014 to 6% of the population in 2017. It is therefore a reality that many female athletes may be considering or following a vegan lifestyle. Although macronutrient and micronutrient needs can certainly be met on a meat-free diet, understanding how to execute a nutritionally sound vegan diet is key. This article will discuss the vegan diet, as it pertains to the female athlete.

  • Nutritional Needs of the Female Athlete: Risk and Prevention of Low Energy
    • Authors: Black; Katherine E.; Baker, Dane F.; Sims, Stacy T.
Abstract: imageTo date, most of the research surrounding low energy availability (LEA) and female athletes has focused on the high prevalence rates (2–77%). Despite the severe negative health and performance consequences, awareness of this issue is low. There are potentially a multitude of factors that contribute to the development of LEA across the menstrual cycle and training phases. This review highlights these influences and provides practical tips for those working with female athletes.

  • Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Female Athletes
    • Authors: Rial Rebullido; Tamara; Chulvi-Medrano, Iván; Faigenbaum, Avery D.; Stracciolini, Andrea
Abstract: imagePelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) in female athletes can have a negative impact on quality of life, athletic performance, and participation in sport. Research indicates that female athletes participating in sports that involve running, jumping, and high-impact landing are at a higher risk for PFD than nonathletic females. The stress and increased intra-abdominal pressure from high-impact forces, as well as neuromuscular fatigue of the pelvic floor musculature, may contribute to PFD in female athletes. Sport coaches, fitness professionals, and health care providers play an essential role in raising awareness about PFD and promoting pelvic floor fitness for female athletes.

  • Pregnancy and Postpartum Training: Coaching Considerations
    • Authors: Wise; Stephanie L.; Binkley, Jean L.; Binkley, Helen M.
Abstract: imageExercise is beneficial for women to continue during pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, many women do not meet the minimum guidelines set forth by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Strength and conditioning coaches and personal trainers working specifically with athletes and nonathletes during childbearing years should continue to encourage their clientele to exercise. Educating them on altering their current exercise program and adapting it as they progress through their pregnancy into the postpartum period is important. General recommendations for exercise and certain modifications may be needed as many physical and physiological adaptations occur within the body during this time.

  • Strength and Conditioning Recommendations for Female GAA Athletes: The
           Camogie Player
    • Authors: Duggan; John David; Moody, Jeremy; Byrne, Paul J.; Ryan, Lisa
Abstract: imageCamogie (kuh·mow·gee) is a traditional, amateur Gaelic sport played by female athletes. This invasion-based field sport involves high-intensity intermittent physical demands. There is currently a dearth of available research in intercounty despite the prevalence of research in the male version of the game (hurling). The aims of this article are to provide strength and conditioning recommendations for the sport of camogie, specifically at intercounty level. These recommendations include considerations working with intercounty female camogie athletes, specific camogie injury epidemiology, physiological demands, and practical strength and conditioning for implementation by practitioners. Moreover, a sport-specific testing battery; development of physical attributes to enhance match-play performance; a proposed annual periodization cycle; and sample strength, speed and agility programs will be discussed.

  • Concussions in Female Athletes: Practical Applications for the Strength
           and Conditioning Expert
    • Authors: Craig; Debbie I.; Vogel, Tanya
Abstract: imageWith the significant increase in concussion research and focus in the media, it is important for strength and conditioning coaches and medical experts to be clear on sex differences between how female and male concussed athletes may experience a concussion. To that end, this article offers a review of this current research, along with practical applications of the research for coaches and clinicians who work with female athletes. How should we be working with concussed female athletes specifically to assure their optimal recovery and future brain health?
