  • An Evaluation About the Number and Order of the Children Born from Khadija
           of The Prophet’s

    • Authors: Kevser ÖZDOĞAN
Abstract: In resources, there is little report about the Prophet’s children, who were born by Khadijah. However there can be observed differences in the information given by these resources about thenumber of the children and the order of the children. There are reports in the resources claiming thenumber of children was five, six, seven, eight and even ten. It is understood that the problem aboutthe number of children arises from accepting the names of Tayyib, Tâhir, Mutayyeb, Mutahhar, which were all given to Abd Allah, as a different child for each. On the other hand, it is determinedthat the names, which are openly mentioned in the resources such as Abd as-Shams Abd al-Uzzah,do not cause any difference in the number of the children. As for the reports which give informationabout the number of the children, the most reasonable ones are those which consider the number ofchildren as six. In addition, it is ascertained that the problem about the order of the children arisesbecause of the daughters. There is no disunity about that the eldest of the daughters is Zeyneb. Yet,there is no mutual agreement in relation to which one is younger among Rukayya, Umm Kulthumand Fâtıma. In order to be able to solve this problem, the reports about the order of the children arecompared to the information about the children’s dates of birth. As a result of that, the conclusionreached is that the order of the children can be as following; Kâsım, Zaynab, Rukayya, Fâtıma,Umm Kulthum and Abd Allah.

  • A Philosophy of Mind Evaluation on Soul-Body Dualism in Avicenna’s

    • Authors: Mehtap DOĞAN
Abstract: Soul has been a huge problem in history of philosophy within the context of its description, existence, immortality and its relationship with body since the ancient times. Avicenna’s theory onsoul could be evaluated as a bridge between his epistemological and ontological ideas. Although histheory has similar characteristics with Plato’s and Aristoteles’ philosophical arguments on soul,Avicenna offers a significant schema on soul that really exceeds both Plato and Aristoteles.Avicenna proposed a systematical analysis of mind-body problem decades before Descartes, whohas been known as the constructer of mind-body problem. Therefore, it should be taken into anaccount that Avicenna although lived in Middle-ages, made a significant contribution to bothpsychology and philosophy of mind indirectly. The aim of this essay is firstly to evaluate Avicenna’ssoul theory concerning the description of soul, the nature of soul, types of soul and the functions ofsoul and then to search for its effects on modern philosophy of mind. Especially it is easy to realizethat there is an explicit similarity between Descartes and Avicenna’s ideas on soul. On the issue ofmind-body problem, Descartes claims that mind could exist without the existence of body. Mind isa separate and distinct substance; however, there is a mutual relationship between mind and bodythrough pineal gland. Similar with Descartes, Avicenna also claims that soul can exist withoutbody because it is a distinct substance. He constructs a ground for this idea by using his popularthought experiment “flyman”. In this essay, it is tried to be indicated that Avicenna’s theory of soulhas important reflections both on Descartes and modern philosophy of mind

  • A Contrubition from Outside to the Field of New Ilm al-Kalam: Milasli
           Ismail Hakki’s Views

    • Authors: Resul ÖZTÜRK
Abstract: Sincethe end of the 19th century, especially in Kalam, innovations invarious fields of Islamic thought have beenlooked for. Discussions about the method and contents of the Kalam have madethe necessity of this renewal of the Kalam. Some translations from Westernlanguages and some works contain information contrary to Islam. As aresult, Islam has to be re-expressed. For thispurpose, it is inevitable to use a new language and method and to benefit fromthe possibilities of philosophy in this field. The Kalam had to rely on the new philosophy and itsmethods in order to be able to repel the attacks directed at the religiousbelief. Therefore, “New Kalam” movement was born and İzmirli İsmail Hakkı wasthe pioneer of this movement. In this approach, many topics such asreligious-state relations, secularism, human rights, women's issues, racism, alienation, international security crisis, colonialism, hunger, belief andfreedom of thought, which are all discussed in today's world, have entered intothe scope of Kalam.  The factthat Kalam is a science based on human interpretation proves that everyone itis open to everyone who has the quality. In this context, it is worth notingthat Milaslı Ismail Hakkı, who was a medical doctor, finds this courage inhimself and responds by writing a book to the questions of the Anglican Church. His work is important for showing different approaches. He has demonstrated a Koranic approachwithout using classical Kalam sources. The relationship between faith andreligion, approach to different religions and the importance that Islam givesrise to science are the main themes of his. It is especially worthwhileof him to study the wisdom of worship, psychological and moral dimensions.

  • The Establishment Process of Tawhid in Qur’an

    • Authors: Fikrullah ÇAKMAK
Abstract: Tawhid is the main principle that establishes the essence of Islamic belief. It is a religious beliefthat all the prophets manifest in the name of Allah. This belief expresses the way of thinking, theway of life that occurs around a single god. In this context, faith is the result of a meaningfulrelation between the worship and islamic law. Tawhid is not only a discourse for the grace of Allahbut a system that determines how Allah-universe relation operates. In this relationship, it is notpossible to engage active forces between Allah and the universe. All kinds of beliefs and thoughtsare in the face of Tawhid that will leave Allah in a passive position during his relation with thecreatures and particularly with humans. In this study, the establishment process of the belief oftawhid will be tried to be examined, which is the basic doctrine of Islamic belief. In this regard, criticism directed at polytheism(Shirk) will be examined from the perspective of Qur’an. Especiallyareas where tawhid narratives intensify will be determined. The narrative will be attempted to beunderstood in the way of understanding in the revelation process.

  • The Legitimate Religious Truth and Its Linguistic Roots from the
Perspective of the Theologians: The Concept of Faith in God as a Example

    • Authors: Hasan el-Hattaf
Abstract: The legitimate religious truth is seen frommore than one angle. Linguists, speakers and fundamentalists spoke about it.What we are concerned with here is the views of Kalam scholars. The controversyto the legitimate religious truth between Ahl al-Sunnah represented byAsha’riya and Maturidism represented by Mu’tazila is obvious. Mu'tazilaseparates the legitimate religious truth from linguistic rules, since religiongave it a new meaning which didn’t exist before. While Asha’riya and Maturidismmake language origin of the religious legitimate truth. Ibn Hazm was closer toMu'tazilah as well as being prejudiced against Asha’riya. In the process of this disagreement a newdisagreement was based on ‘faith and its relationship to the works’. In thisconcept Mu'tazilah and Khawarij considered the works as a part of the faith, and this led Khawarij to takfeer , and led Mu'tazila to call this ‘a positionwhich is between two positions’. Contrary to this, in Asha'riya and Maturidism, which represent Ahl al-Sunnah, works are the complements of the basics offaith. This is what we are going to discuss in this research.
