  • Expertise, Leadership Style and Communication in Interfunctional
           Coordination

    • Authors: Eva Tomášková
      Pages: 103 - 111
Abstract: The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the effect of expertise, leadership style and communication on coordination by electrical engineering companies. It is unexceptionable that expertise, communication, teamwork and mutual cooperation are fundamental for interfunctional coordination (IFC). A questionnaire in the form of the Likert scale was prepared, it involves information about IFC. The questionnaire was tested for internal consistency and reliability using Cronbach alpha. The complete database of 60 SMEs was analysed by using statistical software package Minitab, version 17. Spearman’s rank correlation test was used to answer the hypotheses. The main findings show: (1) A positive correlation among items related to expertise and communications and IFC. (2) Some positive correlation among items related to leadership style and IFC – positive correlation shows only with team-work and mutual cooperation. The results of the paper can assist companies in their attitude towards IFC, by reason that companies can better implement IFC. The novelty of the paper is in determination some possible connectedness of IFC, concretely the correlation among experts, leadership style and communications with IFC of a company. The results of the paper can assist companies in their attitude towards IFC, by reason that companies can better implement IFC.

  • Empirical Investigation of Chief Executive Officers' Personal Brand

    • Authors: Ildikó Takács, Veronika Takács, Anna Kondor
      Pages: 112 - 120
Abstract: Leadership has been a topic of investigation in organizational studies for many years. Several researchers have investigated the ideal leader, and even more theories and models have been built around the concepts of leadership style, behavior, personality, performance, competences, skills and so on. However, studies of how these characteristics are combined as 'personal brands', and how they are perceived by the social environment are clearly lacking. The aim of the paper is therefore to identify the dimensions of CEOs' personal brand, in other words to investigate the aspects that apply to leaders’ social environment and to perceive and evaluate them. Using exploratory factor analysis on a Hungarian sample, three factors have been identified as the basis for CEOs' personal brand: competence, morality and humanity.

  • Interruptions at Work from the Point of View of IT Professionals

    • Authors: Fruzsina Pataki-Bittó
      Pages: 121 - 129
Abstract: It is a major challenge nowadays to recruit and retain young professionals, especially IT professionals in Europe. Interior designers do their bests to create an office space that is more attractive for the young talents than the competitor’s workspace. Modern workstyle is based on communication and collaboration and therefore modern office spaces are designed to support continuous communication and teamwork. In this research, we raise the question how IT professionals fit in this workstyle. The focus of this research is on how IT professionals feel about the different types of communication channels, which are those they identify as hindering factors, and how much their opinion differs from other professionals. During the research, we collected information from questionnaires asking about work environment, communication channels used in the workplace, individual communication preferences, and factors considered as disruptions. The questionnaire was completed by 191 Hungarian office workers from which 63 respondents were IT professionals. The most important result of the research shows that while IT professionals consider personal inquiries useful, many of them are dissatisfied with organized meetings. This research also outlines that IT professionals have an outstanding ability to block out office noise and to focus on work. With the conclusions we make suggestions to the organizations how to improve the communicational environment in order to support work efficiency.

  • Comparison of Strategies to Manage Stress Considering to Selected
           Socio-demographic Characteristics of Employees

    • Authors: Tatiana Lorincová
      Pages: 130 - 136
Abstract: The presented paper deals with the analysis of selected stress management strategies considering to gender and position in organization in which individual employees work. The aim of the paper is to compare the ways of managing and processing the stressful situations, as well as their variability with regard to the group of respondents, their inclusion in the organization (manager or executive employee) and the size of organization (small and medium organization). The research was conducted by using two methodologies, namely Brief COPE from Carver (1997) and SVF 78 by Janke and Erdmann (2003). The research sample consisted of 130 respondents aged 19 to 63 (mean age 40.38 with a standard deviation of 6.73), namely 53.8% of males and 47.2% of women. The research sample consisted of executive employees (49.2%) and managers (50.8%) working in a small and medium-sized organization. The research results were analyzed by t-test for two independent samples, namely the individual stress management strategies were compared. We found statistically significant differences in the level of control of the situation, self-blaming, POZ 1 and NEG among executive employees and managers. At the level of perseverance, self-blaming, religiosity and spirituality, and NEG we found statistically significant gender differences. Comparison of employees working in a small and medium-sized organization has demonstrated the existence of statistically significant differences in levels of underestimation, negation, ventilation and self-blaming. The most common strategy of stress management was the strategy of self-blaming, given the analyzed socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents.

  • The The Role of Knowledge-based Consumption in the Consumers’ Purchase
           Decisions of Heating Products

    • Authors: Noémi Munkácsi
      Pages: 137 - 148
Abstract: The increasing role of the Internet enables the spread of knowledge-based consumption; consumers are turning to their social environment to exchange information and experiences with products either through personal contacts or by contacting others on the Internet. Several former studies analyzed the influencing role of experience-based communication on a variety of products but in the case of heating appliances the scientific literature is lacking. The goal of the study is to reveal the influence of experience in the various stages of the purchase process and to identify the credible information sources that consumers consult while making a decision. A two-step exploratory research was conducted in 2013 with homeowners in Hungary on the residential heat market. Consumers were found be active decision-makers and deliberately planned the purchase of heating products. The influencing role of experience prevails not only in the consumers’ personal experience but also in the experience of other users they interact with and in the experience of professionals they consult. Personal experience starts at the early age as respondents’ recall childhood memories with heating, which influences the consumers’ expectations in the early stage of the purchase process. The experience of other users prevails along the whole purchase process through credible sources and the experience of professionals influences mainly the information search and validation phase of the purchase process. Consumers consult other users (strong and weak social sources) personally or via online sources by the final decision rather than turning to the installer.

  • Of Predators and Preys: Corporate Psychopathy and Employee Burnout as
           Parallels

    • Authors: Adebukola E. Oyewunmi, David M. Akinnusi, Olabode A. Oyewunmi
      Pages: 149 - 156
Abstract: Different personalities constitute modern workplaces. One of such personalities is the corporate psychopath, whose presence poses manifold threats to organizational existence. This study examines the personality of the corporate psychopath and specifically investigates the relationship between corporate psychopathy and employee burnout. A total of 104 respondents within a university setting in Nigeria completed measures of corporate psychopathy to establish the existence of the traits in their managers; a self-report measure of employee burnout was also completed. Corporate psychopathy correlates positively and significantly with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased personal accomplishment. Results indicate that corporate psychopathy is an underlying factor of employee burnout. Enhanced whistleblowing structures and ethical regeneration are proffered to mitigate the consequences of corporate psychopathy in the face of cultural complexes that fan its flames.

  • Adaptation and Cognition of High-Risk Environment Teams in an
           Input-Mediator-Outcome Framework

    • Authors: Veronika Klára Takács, Márta Juhász
      Pages: 157 - 167
Abstract: The aim of this article is to introduce a conceptual, integrative model of the adaptation of teams in high risk environments. The model is a combination of previous theoretical frameworks of adaptation and task execution, with the aim of providing a comprehensive model for understanding team adaptation specific to high risk environments. We give equal importance to adaptation as an input, a mediator, and an outcome by putting it in an Input-Mediator-Outcome model, although we further wish to emphasize the relevance of team cognition in team adaptation. In addition, we aim to highlight that, depending on the trigger and the already existing characteristics of the team, adaptation might either follow an algorithm-based or a knowledge-based pattern.

  • Development Strategy for a Quality Management System of Gayo Coffee
           Agro-Industry Using Soft Systems Methodology

    • Authors: Rahmat Fadhil, Qanytah Qanytah, Dwi Yuni Hastati, Mohamad Syamsul Maarif
      Pages: 168 - 178
Abstract: The potential of Gayo coffee production in Aceh Province, Indonesia, has not been thoroughly well optimized, especially the low quality of coffee products and an inadequate quality management. Resulting in a demand of a holistic mapping problem system to elaborate the problem and discover the root and the most suitable solution. This article explains the development strategy for quality management system of Gayo coffee agro-industry using Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) approach. The SSM approach is able to provide solutions for unstructured problems. In this case, it is recommended to initiate an improvement from the farmers and exporters regarding the planning, controlling, and improving the quality under a control of local government, research institutions, and universities. Building a union and tools for the quality observation, control, and improvement is highly needed with a continuous process to achieve a sustainable improvement.

  • A Review on the Resource Curse

    • Authors: László Szalai
      Pages: 179 - 189
Abstract: Natural wealth is generally considered as one of the fundamental sources of economic growth. However, a vast majority of the related empirical research verified that resource-rich countries tend to underperform their resource-deficient counterparts. This paradox is known as the resource curse. During the past two decades more sophisticated analyses have revealed that the presence of the curse is conditional and its growth effects are non-monotonic. Recent efforts concentrate on understanding the transmission channels and identifying the decisive conditions on the fulfillment of the curse. This article gives an overview on the progress and depicts the current state of the research.
