  • Introduction: Social Movements, Protest, and Academic Knowledge Formation.
           Interactions since the 1960s
    • Authors: Susanne Schregel
      Pages: 5 - 26
Abstract: This introductory paper seeks to stimulate discussion on entanglements between protest campaigns, social movements and academic processes of generating knowledge in the USA and Western Europe since the 1960s. It examines how protagonists from social movements and counterculture have contributed to understandings of academic knowledge formation and its relationship to the public sphere, the role of the scientist, and the practical processes involved in generating and acquiring knowledge. Focusing on drafts of both ‘alternative’ and ‘conventional’ science and their impact on each other, the paper in particular suggests enquiring into the creative and experimental aspects of alternative scientific projects and the media in which they took form. In pursuit of this goal, it proposes to transcend the existing compartmentalisation of research in social movements and the formation of knowledge into numerous specialities, and to further broaden the dialogue between the history of social movements and the history of science and of knowledge.

  • Fictional Academies as Strategy of Artists’ Institutional Critique:
           Jörg Immendorff’s LIDL-academy (1968 – 1970) and Gérard
           Gasiorowski’s Académie Worosis Kiga (1976 – 1982)
    • Authors: Theresa Nisters
      Pages: 27 - 44
Abstract: Since the student movements of 1968, a wide range of educational alternatives has spread in France and Germany. In the scholarly discussion of this phenomenon, artistic contributions have not yet found the attention they deserve. As an important gatekeeper in an artist’s career, the art academy strives to legitimatise artists’ social status by procuring canonical norms for their formation. The academy thus aims to provide a basis of theoretical and practical knowledge that guarantees the quality of artistic production and hence its value on the art market; this ideological foundation, however, disagrees with the general idea of a liberal artist whose ingenious talent cannot be taught. Furthermore, in fact, not all successful artists emerged from an academic education. In this respect, the art academy has been subject to resistance. Using two exemplary art works, LIDL-academy (1968 – 1970) by the German artist Jörg Immendorff and Académie Worosis Kiga (1976 – 1982) by the Parisian painter Gérard Gasiorowski, this article discusses the case of the ‘fictional academy’ as a specific approach in the struggle for educational reform in the field of art during the uproars around 1968. Uncovering the tight connection between wider social tendencies and individual artistic practices, it proposes an outlook on the effects of artists’ claims on today’s art business.

  • ‘Project Studies!’. Reform Experiments in Academic Learning and
Teaching in the 1960s and 1970s
    • Authors: Wilfried Rudloff
      Pages: 45 - 70
Abstract: In the growing literature on the history of the student movement and university reform in the 1960s and 1970s, little emphasis is placed on the contested discourse surrounding academic learning and teaching. This article attempts to shed some light on the strong criticism that students directed at the traditional methods of teaching during this period, and on the subsequent proposals that emerged for a reform of tertiary education. After a short outline of the critical comments made by students and of the scattered attempts undertaken to initiate self-organised forms of learning, this paper analyses the reform proposals instigated by the assistant movement. At the heart of these proposals stood the highly ambitious concept of ‘project studies (‘Projektstudium’), which in a number of places — especially at some of the newly founded universities — was put into effect in the early 1970s. The concluding remarks address obstacles and constraints that contributed to the limited success of the reform concept, which is currently experiencing a certain revival albeit in a modified form.

  • Service Learning as an Alternative Academic Trend in U. S. Higher
Education from the late-1960s to the mid-1980s: A Case Study from Michigan
           State University
    • Authors: Anna Wellner
      Pages: 71 - 94
Abstract: The article sheds light on the way in which alternative academic trends that originated alongside student protests in the late-1960s and early-1970s influenced higher education in the U. S. It focuses on a case study from Michigan State University (MSU), analysing the initiation and implementation process of service learning, an alternative trend in education that combined community service with academic education, from the late-1960s to the mid-1980s. It examines the roles different stakeholders at the local level (i. e., students, faculty, and administrators) as well as others on the national level (i. e., politicians and education commissioners) played in influencing that process. The case of service learning at MSU exemplifies that an alternative trend, one introduced from the bottom up, could become a standard academic practice, yet one that was not implemented without numerous adjustments and compromises. This article will demonstrate the pedagogical method’s execution and how its educational goals changed according to common standards in higher education that were usually established from the top down.

  • Alternative Legal Publicism' Four Legal Publications from the Long
1970s and Their Reception in Legal Studies and Legal Practice
    • Authors: Martin Löhnig
      Pages: 95 - 120
Abstract: Between 1968 and the early 1980s, four long-term orientated legal publication media came into being in the Federal Republic of Germany: the journals Kritische Justiz (KJ) and Zeitschrift für Rechtspolitik (ZRP), as well as the Alternativkommentar zum Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch (AK-BGB) and the Münchener Kommentar zum Bürgerlichen Gesetzbuch (MünchKomm-BGB). Albeit in a different manner, each of these four claimed to constitute an alternative to more established publication media in law. The article describes which aspirations led to the foundation of these media — two of which competed with one another –, how they developed and how they were received in legal studies and legal practice. By doing so, the article exemplifies interactions between social movements and academic knowledge formation in contemporary history through the lens of jurisprudential publicism.

  • Against Japanese and Italian Imperialism: The Anti-War Campaigns of
Communist International Trade Union Organizations, 1931 – 1936
    • Authors: Holger Weiss
      Pages: 121 - 146
Abstract: This essay discusses the international anti-war campaigns of the International of Seamen and Harbour Workers (ISH) and the International Trade Union Committee of Negro Workers (ITUCNW) against Japanese imperialism in Manchuria and Italian imperialism in Ethiopia during the first half of the 1930s. Both crises propelled international campaigns, ‘Hands off China’ and ‘Hands off Abyssinia’, that were orchestrated by the Third (Communist) International or the Comintern and the Red International of Labour Unions (Profintern) and their affiliated organisations such as the ISH and ITUCNW. Comintern / Profintern anti-war campaigns were organized under the banner of the prevailing ‘class-against-class’ strategy. In practice, this meant that the campaigns were both calls for international solidarity and at the same time attempts to position communist activities against those of the ‘social fascists’, i.e., socialist, social democratic, reformist and / or syndicalist controlled parties and trade unions.
