  • The Mediating Role of Prejudice in Mobbing and Organizational Commitment

    • Authors: Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Ali BALTACI
Abstract: This study aims todetermine the effect of prejudice on the relationship between organizationalcommitment and mobbing. Mobbing is the negativeactions and behaviors that an employee in an organization applies to otheremployees. Organizational commitment implies that theemployee is adopting an organization and that he/she is trying for theorganization willingly. Prejudice is oftentimes anegative prognostication because of lack of information against a person or agroup. Although there are studies on mobbing andorganizational commitment in the literature, there is no study linking theseconcepts with prejudice. The research sample consistsof 391 teachers working in Ankara. In order to measureorganizational commitment, mobbing and prejudice behaviors, scales developed bythe researcher based on the literature were used. This research wasdesigned with correlational survey model. Data were analyzedby correlation and hierarchical regression tests. According to theresults of the research, professional tenure, age and school size influenceorganizational commitment, mobbing, and prejudice. A significant andnegative relationship was found between mobbing and organizational commitment.Likewise, a significant and negative relationship was found between prejudiceand organizational commitment. However, there is a meaningfuland positive relationship between prejudice and mobbing. As a result of the hierarchical regression analysis, prejudice was foundto be completely mediated between organizational commitment and mobbing. Thisresearch is the first research to determine the relationship between conceptsin literature.

  • Spatial Functioning in Khalwati Convents in the XVI. Century of Istanbul:
Relations of Tekke Units to Other Structures in the Complex

    • Authors: Ayşe Bölükbaşı
Abstract: In the XVI. century, Khalvatiyya was one of the most influential orders in Ottoman social life. The order of Khalwatiyya owed this power to the support of government officials. In this respect, they had a widespread convent network in many cities, especially in Istanbul. Khalwati convents were mostly in the large or small complexes built by the statesmen. These convents were in contact and interaction with other units of the complexes they belonged to. There were partnerships in terms of space and staff between the convents and the mosque, masjid, madrasah, darülhadis, imaret, hamam of the complex. The members of a convent sometimes can get a job in other units of the complex; can use the spaces belonging to other units while they were performing the mystical rituals like zikir, tawhid, sema ; and sometimes  they were able to benefit from the various facilities of other units. All this helped to keep members of Khalwatiyya in touch with the broader social sectors, as well as maximizing the influence of the order. From the beginning, it was the result of a process in which the patrons of these convents wanted and consciously prepared their sub-structure.

  • Romani Ethnic Identity Through Instrumentalist and Constructivist
           Theoretical Framework

    • Authors: Öğretim Görevlisi Gizem PARSOVA
Abstract: Inthis article the concept of ethnic identity has been discussed over Romani as oneof the ethnic groups in Turkey, within the theoretical framework ofconstructivism and instrumentalism. Being a Romani is perpetually reconstructedwith discriminatory discourse and treatment by the dominant group in society. Inthe social background of this reconstruction specific interest groups in labourmarket are situated. The persistent reconstruction of negative stereotypetowards Romani puts them away from the labour market and prompts them to be informal, cheap and temporary labour force. Romani labour force as being a cheap andtemporary labour force reconstructs their lifestyle as poverty, passing downfrom one generation to the other. Therefore, as a collective identity, beingRomani is related with the demand for right which aims at the maintenance ofthe limited sources owned by the ethnic group. Romani collective identity, as aresult, has instrumentalist characteristic which is activated by the demand forcitizen rights. It gains emotional content with the emphasis on tradition aspart of shared benefits. As an individual identity, being a Romani, similar tocollective identity, has instrumentalist characteristic; it may be prominent aspart of the individual benefits or it may be disregarded.
