  • The Sports Hero in the Social Imaginary. Identity, Community, Ritual and
           Myth

    • Authors: Luca Bifulco, Mario Tirino
      Pages: 9 - 25
Abstract: This paper aims to introduce the sociological processes and mechanisms defining the social imaginary of sports hero, who is a sportsperson acquiring a special status by virtues of his/her extraordinary and exemplary skills, achievements and biography. The sports hero inspires long-term identification and he is symbol of a community, of its values, ideas and collective meanings, while his body incorporates socially appreciated and celebrated qualities. In the dramaturgical and ritual dimension of sport, an athlete can become a collective symbol, and, over time, an hero with mythical features. However, it is only through media narratives that a sportsperson can be heroic and mythical. Thus, the social imaginary in the narrative construction of the sports hero as a central role. The stories revitalise myths, archetypes and beliefs displaying human passions, ambitions, contradictions, conflicts and so on.

  • De Maradona a Messi: viejos y nuevos argumentos sobre el héroe
           deportivo y la patria

    • Authors: Pablo Alabarces
      Pages: 26 - 43
Abstract: The article discusses the relationship between national narratives and sport, incorporating the cases of women's hockey and rugby in Argentina (which allows to debate the gender problematic), as well as the transformations produced in the role of the State as producer of the patriotic narrative in the contemporary neo-populisms. But, postulating the centrality of the sports hero in these narratives, it analyzes the passage from Maradona to Messi: from the “kid” to the “good boy”.

  • Sia lodato il Grande Torino. La tragedia di Superga e la costruzione della
           comunità immaginata cattolica

    • Authors: Daniele Serapiglia
      Pages: 44 - 61
Abstract: On 4 May 1949, all the players of the top Italian team of the time, Il Grande Torino, died in an air crash. The tragedy of Superga seemed to be representative of Italy in the immediate post-war period and for this reason it managed to connect with almost the entire nation. The images of the carcass of the plane at the base of Turin’s basilica evoked the war images broadcast by the newsreels between 1940 and 1945. The Torino players were heroes and as heroes were celebrated at their funeral, which seemed to indirectly refer to the cult of the fallen in fascist culture. The funeral held in Turin was attended by 500,000 people and managed to unite a large part of the population in a public rite, during which not only did the deaths of the Grande Torino appear to be celebrated, but also those who had died in the Second World War. Public funerals such as those of the Grande Torino gave Italians the opportunity to openly vent intimate emotions linked to personal experience, helping to build the new nationalCatholicpost-war community.

  • Il surfista, eroe romantico nell’Australia contemporanea. Un’analisi
etnografica a partire dal caso della Gold Coast

    • Authors: Dario Nardini
      Pages: 62 - 83
Abstract: Through the ethnographic analysis of surf culture on the Gold Coast, this paper examines the relevance of the surfer’s image in Australia’s representations. In fact, surfing epitomises some of the cultural traits that symbolically define the national identity such as the relation with nature, the beach, fitness and “larrikism”. Among these qualities, bravery represents the cornerstone of an exclusive and mainly manly—and white—sporting culture. As a seductive echo of the Romantic hero, surfers embody the ideal appeal of “fun” and freedom, as well as the competitive attitude of sport and the athletic allure of youth; with no contradictions, they also exemplify the individualism of the “neoliberalist ethos”, a virile kind of brotherhood and the discriminating dynamics which have characterized the history of sport in Australia. The Gold Coast is an ideal context to observe these processes in fieri, for its role in promoting competitive surfing and surfers’ representations in the Country.

  • Eroe sportivo e memoria collettiva. Bartali nella letteratura per ragazzi:
un paradigma culturale della generazione postmemory.

    • Authors: Monica Musolino
      Pages: 84 - 100
Abstract: This paper analyses the relationship between sporting heroes and collective memory, through a specific case study: the Gino Bartali biography. Usually, this type of narrative is referring to sporting heroes and their extraordinary performances and successes; instead, in this case, we talk about Bartali not only as a sporting hero but also in the context of relevant national historic events, defining more clearly the relationship between memory and history. In this paper, we analyse the post memory studies (Hirsch, 2012) wherever these scholars use the human and sporting champion biographies to pass down human and political value-based messages to younger generations. In other words, the social memory (Halbwachs) will be used to build a generational imaginary.

  • El deporte y la idolatría: la caminata heroica de la judoca brasileña
Rafaela Silva en los Juegos Olímpicos Londres 2012 e Río 2016

    • Authors: Adriana Guimarães Moreira
      Pages: 101 - 116
Abstract: The article analyzes the narrative of the brazilian newspaper O Globo about mediatic construction of the heroine image of the judo brazilian athlete Rafaela Silva. Many journalistic examples were searched with nominal athlete’s citations published in sports editions in 2012 (London Games) and in 2016 (Rio Games). Based on hero theory concept, it has been verified that the athlete was presented as a character that goes through the stages of the journey proposed by Campbell (1995). The conclusion of Helal, Cabo and Marques (2009), confirmed by Amaro (2014), ratifies a specific vocabulary used by sports press about the Olympic medalists. This is valuable to show her route. Textual references such as "overcoming” and "dedication", associated with Rafaela’s life, also allow us to identify repeated characteristics that prove how the Olympic heroes imaginary are treated by specialized media that helps the consumption of the megaevent.

  • Maradona, Pelè e altre leggende. Il ruolo dei miti sportivi nelle
           simulazioni videoludiche calcistiche

    • Authors: Emiliano Chirchiano
      Pages: 117 - 129
Abstract: The sports genre has historically been the most present in the world of videogames, since the first experiments like "Tennis for two", probably because simulating a gaming activity with already known boundaries is easier to understand (Bogost, 2013. Conway, 2010). Since ancient times, myth was the favorite creativeplace to elaborate individual or collective human passions. Even in videogames, the introduction of mythical protagonists makes the game boasts a charm that allows players to experience, with strong emotional involvement, the game interactivity. This article aims to discuss how football simulations use avatars of legendary players, from the present and the past, to support a certain ideal of sports culture and celebrity.

  • Tra serve and volley: l’immaginario eroico di Stefan Edberg

    • Authors: Vincenzo Del Gaudio, Paolo Diana
      Pages: 130 - 146
Abstract: This work intends to investigate the figure of Stefan Edberg from two perspectives: on the one hand the icon of Edberg within the sporting imagery in relation with the hero mythology, and on the other, starting from the particular development of the Serve and volley, as it can make us understand tennis in a mediological key. This analysis must therefore take into account the technical-tactical characteristics of Edberg's game and the relationships that the Swedish tennis player has had with the media who have built the character (Marchesini 2016). The purpose of the article is to trace the particular heroic substance of Edberg suspended between the shine of the classical hero and the duplicity of the modern hero. This heroic substance is investigated also starting from the figure that the media have built of the Swedish tennis player.

  • Between solar and lunar hero: a cartographic study of Brazilian Olympic
           athletes in the social imaginary

    • Authors: Katia Rubio, Rafael Veloso, Lucia Leao
      Pages: 147 - 162
Abstract: Sport, understood as a social phenomenon and object of research, brings together the efforts of the most diverse fields of academic knowledge production. In the present paper, we propose a cartographic study of the images that are present in the biographical narratives of four Brazilian Olympic athletes, exploring their interconnections, subtleness and ambiguities. We defend that the study of the images of the nocturnal heroes, normally placed in the background by media processes, can act as important amplifier for the understanding of the complexities that constitutes the social imaginary of the sport phenomenon. Our argument is that, in their trajectories, these athletes manifest solar, lunar and “in between” hero experiences. The theoretical framework connects three previous studies: the research on the theme of the nocturnal hero; Rubio’s investigation on “Brazilian Olympic Heroes”; and the cartographic method for the investigation on the processes of image and imaginaries’ creation proposed by Leao.

  • Roland Barthes and the “beauty of speed”: sports as a Futurist
           myth

    • Authors: Andrea Lombardinilo
      Pages: 163 - 179
Abstract: The paper deals with Roland Barthes’ interpretation of sports as a contemporary myth, becoming a semiotic and communicative medium with the approach of consumer society. In particular, the paper dwells on the transformation of motor racing into a collective myth, in accordance with Marinetti’s celebration of speed. The texts arranged by Barthes for the documentary directed by Aubert Aquin (Les sport et les hommes, 1960-1961) enable an analysis of the diffusion of sports as a mere collective business. Therefore, the paper revolves around Barthes’ ability to elaborate a theoretical framework suitable for the study of contemporary myths, in line with the Futurist “beauty of speed”. Juan Manuel Fangio embodied the real social myth, nowadays enhanced by Luis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. The latter won the 2018 edition of the F1 Canadian Gp forty years after Gilles Villeneuve reached his first victory. The deaths of Villeneuve and Senna and Schumacher’s serious injury attest that speed has become an effective social myth, suspended between risks and immortality.

  • ” We are the Superhumans!” Sport e disabilità: gli eroi
           inabili

    • Authors: Isabella Quatera
      Pages: 180 - 191
Abstract: The social representationsof phenomena arise and develop through the processes of interaction and communication within a collectivity. The sport performance, moreover, is nothing more than a series of microstories whose protagonists are heroes that convey both the values of sports practice, connoted in the medial dimension of testimonial, and the maximum exaltation of the exceptionality of the act sports in itself, to become true icons in the social imagination. Based on the Foucauldian concept of bio power, the great sports movement of the Paralympics, developed in recent decades, has become a worldwide event. What has changed about the "deformed body"' Are we rediscovering a central figure, in social narratives: the disabled hero' Are they wounded heroes who do not give up, whose prostheses seem magical bows, such as that of Philoctetes (Sophocles) or superhumans cyborgs with exceptional talents'

  • L’atleta paralimpico: dallo stigma al mito, e ritorno Riflessioni sul
ruolo dello sport nell’immaginario della disabilità

    • Authors: Antonietta Spoto
      Pages: 192 - 210
Abstract: The original label of “sport for the disabled” is currently facing a transition. From the idea of “minor competition” to its gradual affirmation as an independent sport reality, even a way to support social activism and, on closer inspection, a privileged instrument to deconstruction the social stigmaof disability. It has been analyzed the current mediaattention on disability and the narrative ways used to talk about it, in the light of the inevitable mutual interaction between social imaginary and mass-culture representation. Disability has been converted into a myth since the Paralympic champions have become popular not only for their sports results, but also because of their life stories and thanks to the cultural and advertising industries. The social imaginary migrates from the pietism and social invisibility of the stigma to the celebration of the “extra-ordinariness” of the Paralympic myth. However, these heroes will soon end up being locked up in a new cage of sense.

  • Una vita eroica. Il significato dello sport nell’immaginario della
           “società del rischio”

    • Authors: Antonio Camorrino
      Pages: 211 - 226
Abstract: In recent years, in a symptomatic manner, peculiar practices are spreading. As David Le Breton brilliantly explains, in the « physical and sporting activities at risk » the individual - often in the presence of a wild nature - becomes heroically the only sovereign of his existence by means of a bet on his abilities, engaging a challenge that, at the limit, puts life at stake. The possibility of finding death in the challenge ensures - in the positive performance - an intensification of the biographical meanings (Le Breton, 2002). According to Le Breton line of thinkingwe can affirm that individual, becoming the hero of his own existence, fights the anxiety of a world lived as hostile, indifferent and meaningless. Analyzing this particular phenomenon, in an investigation that takes into account the sociological reasons of its indicative success, is the aim of this article.

  • Le skin turn dans les nouvelles mythologies sportives

    • Authors: Fabienne Laval, Bernard Andrieu, Olivier Sirost
      Pages: 227 - 241
Abstract: In sixties Roland Barthes shows that sport’s event composed little mythologies. With the postmodernity images of sports collide with fan’s skin. In a sport’s universe redifined by transmedia storytelling, the ethnographic documentuary is proclamed as a new style of reporting athlete’s life. Since 1998 and the film “Les Yeux dans les bleus” inside France football players realized by Stephane Meunier and the TV Canal +, this kind of intimacy film has increase a lot. Technology and uses of image renewed sport mythology. We can see it on movie in fictionnnal flashback (Pelé, Niky Lauda, Howard Winstone), in publicity with peopleized sportsmen (Beckham, Riner, Bolt) or with the new generation of high level athletes with social media and show TV (Iverson, Shields). This way of shivering uses in sports treatment is a sign of a skin turn wich embodied myths.
