  • National Geographic Magazine and the Power of Media: How an Elite Society
           Influenced American Perception

    • Authors: Michelle Welsch
      Pages: 3 - 10
Abstract: The history of the National Geographic Magazine has largely evaded the same readers who have adored its editions. Originally intended as a private platform for a select group of white bureaucrats and Washington-D.C. elite, the National Geographic Society achieved commercial success once it included the general public. In time, its publications made foreign lands and scientific discovery accessible to the masses. The magazine’s articles thrilled the American audience as readers could browse foreign destinations from the safety of their homes. Fascination with the elite combined with powerful platforms of photography and text influenced perception of portrayed subjects. "Exotic" topics established a division between observer and the observed, and published content revealed undertones of racial and gender hierarchy. Early editions provide evidence that caution reader of the impact media can have both on and within cultures and the accompanying importance of questioning the intent of publications. • Karl Polayni, Market Economy and Economic Liberalisation in Nepal

    • Authors: Krishna P. Pandey
      Pages: 11 - 20
Abstract: This review essay is a short account for Karl Polanyi’s alternative interpretation of the world economic history that largely relies on the comparative analysis of two forms of economic exchanges; non-market and market. The replacement of reciprocity and redistribution produced by the market economy based on the principles of profit making, gain and competition, in which money has a central role, is the key argument that Polanyi brings into consideration. His notion of market economy that is self-regulating by its very nature has been synonymous with the free market practice under economic liberalization policy adopted by the capitalist societies nowadays. Despite his projection of the collapse of the market economy in the future, it is gaining ground along with frequent adjustments, adaptations and compromises with other dynamics of society, which could be considered as a new form of embeddedness. The essay raises few analytical issues embeddedness from Nepal’s exercise of market economy on the backdrop of Polanyi’s notion of self-regulating market.Crossing the Border: International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

  • Development Impacts of Globalization and Education: Evidence from the
           Asia-Pacific Countries

    • Authors: Pramila Neupane, Jeet Bahadur Sapkota
      Pages: 21 - 40
Abstract: This article compares globalization, education and development indicators of high-growth and low-growth countries in terms of their GDP per capita in the Asia-Pacific region from 1970 to 2010. Although development is multifaceted, this study mostly considers growth alone as the measure of development. It finds that countries with high level of education at 1970 have achieved high-growth along with rapid globalization over time, and vice versa. Similarly, panel data analysis of selected countries shows that globalization and education significantly enhance the growth. However, despite high level of education and globalization, the Philippines has surprisingly low-growth, high poverty and inequality, which indicates that good policies and institutions should complement globalization and educational base for rapid development. • Cultural Change and Human Behavior: Evolution or Development?

    • Authors: Antonella Delle Fave, Fausto Massimini
      Pages: 41 - 52
Abstract: The study of cultures in today’s world has become a major academic exercise. There are many challenges and problems for human beings that are created by the relationship between cultural inheritance and individuals, namely, through modernization and globalization processes. ! e immediate outcomes of these challenges and problems are ethnic conflicts, cultural clash and other cultural competitions. In order to maintain peace in the world and foster the mutual cooperation among the individuals, each individual has to be an active participant in the attainment of a sustainable development of the whole human system. The main focus of this paper, thus, is to analyze human behavior, as a way of understanding underlying powers of the interplay of biology and culture. • Chronological Trend of Climate in the Lumle Village Development Committee
           from Kaski District, Nepal

    • Authors: Yajna Prasad Timilsina
      Pages: 53 - 64
Abstract: A study has been conducted to examine how the temperature and precipitation in the Lumle Village Development of Kaski district, Nepal has varied over the thirty years period of 1997-2008. Maximum and minimum temperature and precipitation data were collected from Narayani basin. Maximum and minimum-summer and winter temperatures and precipitation categorized as pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon were studied with duration of 10 years separately and average annual temperature and precipitation trends of each decade was examined. The trends of temporal variations of temperature and precipitation were analyzed using secular trend of time series analysis with simple linear regression. For almost all decades maximum temperatures were found to be increasing trend whereas most of the minimum temperatures for three decades were found to be decreasing trend except for two events. So, maximum and minimum temperatures were seen increasing trend with average value 0.033 Celsius per year. Extreme temperature event was seen in 2000-2005. Post monsoon precipitation was seen erratic pattern with increasing during first decade and decreasing second and third decades. Pre-monsoon precipitation is constant pattern and trend of precipitation in the first two decades are increasing where as present decade seen decreasing. But average precipitation is increasing trend with rate of 2.5346mm/year because increasing trend of previous two decades outweighs present rate. Extreme drought period was seen in 2005. Actually, it is concluded that Lumle has decreasing trend in total seasonal precipitation and an increasing trend in temperatures. • Arsenic Contamination in the Deep and Shallow Groundwater of Bara
           District, Nepal

    • Authors: Sadhana Pradhanang Kayastha
      Pages: 65 - 70
Abstract: Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in the Tarai region of Nepal. Communities depend on drinking water of dug wells and tube wells. Altogether thirty six groundwater samples were randomly collected from dug wells and tube wells of Bara District, during pre-monsoon in 2012. The depths of the wells, ranged from 10 to 70 m. Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), were used to measure the concentration of arsenic. About 50% of tube wells exceeded permissible values of WHO guideline (10 ppb), but 12.5 % tube wells exceeded permissible values of Nepal interim standard of arsenic (50 ppb). The risk of arsenic is high because the contaminated water has been continuously used for cooking, drinking and other purposes. This alarming situation therefore calls for measures to mitigate the problem.Crossing the Border: International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

  • Sexual Transgression for Power and Identity: A Glimpse on
           Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

    • Authors: Radha Devi Sharma
      Pages: 71 - 80
Abstract: Crossing social restrictions for identity and status is often the act of dissatisfying group in every society. Shakespearean society which was basically patriarchal and male-dominate set strict restrictions to impose on women’s sphere. However, the suppressed women’s voice sometimes denied the social restrictions in different ways as cross-dressing going beyond the boundary of women’s sexuality. Cross-dressing as sexual transgression was often committed in the actual life of English Renaissance and also in the literary world for independent identity, power and authority. In this regard, this article tries to explore on the sexual transgression committed by the main female character, Viola in the play Twelfth Night to get identity and fulfill her inner desire challenging the socially prescribed norms of gender and sexuality. • Reforms and Changes in Nepal: Political-Sociological Perspectives on State
Restructuring Process in the Post-Democratic Period

    • Authors: Prakash Upadhyay
      Pages: 81 - 98
Abstract: Transitions, by definition, bring changes and the 1951, 1979-80, 1990 and 2006 transitions in Nepal were changes towards democracy. But all transitions before 2006 did not herald major inclusive reforms. Pedestal on the perspectives of Political Sociology, this article argues that political actors, including parties, pressure groups and social movements, operate within a wider social contexts and issues. The socio-political formation of the modern Nepali state is extremely bucolic and power centric hence who rules is a vital concern in Nepal. Political actors inevitably rule, shape, and in turn are shaped by blistering issues faced by the society. Issues as State restructuring often becomes a blistering controversial issue when a country is going federal on the basis of desegregation. Nepali society is extremely diverse and complex hence steps forward in Nepal is possible only from macro perspective which could be a yardstick in developing the Nepali society. As Nepal is a state of many nationalities, hence in post republican State restructuring in Nepal, not xenophobia but positive protests, civil society and political parties /opposition and factual devotion will provide the common bond of harmony in variety. In the process, the affects of public opinion, civic society, ideologies and social tendencies outside of the formal institutions of political power remains decisive.Crossing the Border: International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies

  • Acupuncture and Modern Medicine

    • Authors: Asis De, Abhijit De
      Pages: 99 - 106
Abstract: It is estimated that acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 4000 years. It has now gained increasing acceptance in many countries as an option for treatment of certain painful conditions. Chinese medicine works to balance the Qi (chi) energy in the body, balancing the body’s female (yin) and male (yang) energies. Acupuncturists use needle to stimulate the 14 main meridians and up to 2000 points to prevent and treat diseases by regulating ! ow of chi through a person’s energy channels within the body. There are five elements in acupuncture: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. They along with other six exogenous factors such as wind, cold, summer heat, damp, dryness and fire heat and miscellaneous pathogenic factors influence the energy flow through the body’s five organ networks. According to WHO, acupuncture can be useful in pain management, organic lesions, substance abuse, gynecological disorders, neurological and psychiatric problems. Although it was originated in China, it has slowly spread through the years to Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Europe, and America. Different styles and modifications have been developed over the centuries and many of the countries have been integrating ancient Chinese medicine into modern medicine for treating patients. More importantly, it harmonizes our body energy, calms our mind and spirit and thereby enhances our capacity to enjoy life and attain happiness.Crossing the Border: International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies
