  • Migrations – Local Experiences in a Globalized World (Case of
           Slovenia)

    • Authors: Žarko LAZAREVIĆ
      Pages: 17 - 33
Abstract: Migrations were one of the crucial economic and social questions of the period of the last two centuries in Slovenia. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the emigration and immigration flows were in strong correlation with the changing cultural, social and economic context in Slovenia, as at the international level. Slovenia became a multi-ethnic and multicultural society. Migrations were the spontaneous answer of inhabitants to rural overpopulation and the lack of economic and social prospects, lack of opportunities for improving their lives not only in the short term, but from the long-term perspective as well. Migrations were a useful tool to balance the number of population and available income on a macroeconomic level. The author presents three contexts of migration movements: the time up until World War I, the Interwar period and the time after World War II. Each of these periods represents a different context in the national and international framework. The contexts of emigration include three measurable categories, three variables determining the extent of migrations in the Slovenian space. Thus, the contexts include rural overpopulation, industrialization and urbanization. Migrations changed their form and direction in the second half of the twentieth century when Slovenia, with accelerated economic growth, became an immigration country, prevailingly for the people from the territory of the former Yugoslav republics.

  • Language as a Symbol of a Fractured Country

    • Authors: Vesna POŽGAJ HADŽI
      Pages: 35 - 59
Abstract: In this paper we look at the bipolar Serbo-Croatian language which has undergone various processes in the past two centuries: a) integration in the mid-nineteenth century; b) variation during SFR Yugoslavia, when a common, but not a ‘unique’ Serbo-Croatian language was promoted, and when national varieties were tacitly allowed within the borders of the republics; c) disintegration upon the fall of SFR Yugoslavia in the 1990s; and d) the promotion of successor standard languages (Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Montenegrin). In these processes, unitarian and separatist language policies have constantly changed, and many times the language has been a symbol (its name, script, certain lexemes, etc.) and a means of connecting with the national identity that the advocates of nationalist politics used to promote their political ideologies – by enforcing linguistic changes with the aim of creating as many differences as possible between ‘Our’ language and ‘Their’ language. Following the historical and cultural context, the paper describes the period during the 1990s, which is marked by turbulent socio-political changes, showing that the tendencies towards the dissolution of Serbo-Croatian could have been expected. Two contradictory approaches to Serbo-Croatian and successor languages are further highlighted: on the one hand, it is considered to be a common, polycentric (standard) language realised in national varieties (Bosnian, Montenegrin, Croatian and Serbian); while on the other hand, these languages are considered to be separate standard languages with their own histories and language and cultural particularities. For that reason, forced linguistic changes are implemented by the language policies of the newly-formed states with the aim to preserve and strengthen national identities. This is illustrated by the examples of language nationalisation, including purist cleansing of lexis in Croatia, the enforcement of Cyrillic script in Serbia, the introduction of new phonemes/graphemes in Montenegro, and the nationalist education policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a response to these language policies, a language document entitled The Declaration on the Common Language was published online in 2017. However, it does not offer any concrete solutions for different linguistic realities, but instead advocates the idea of language standardisation which has not been particularly successful in the past. It is therefore concluded that linguists should take into account the limited influence of politics on language and begin conducting systematic language research from the philological and cultural standpoint, putting political views and agenda aside.

  • Classification of Noun-Concluding Sentences from a Syntactic Analysis
           Perspective

    • Authors: Hiroko SAWADA
      Pages: 61 - 87
Abstract: This paper discusses the problem of ‘noun-concluding sentences’ (NCS) in modern Japanese and aims to systematize classification based on syntactic analysis. An NCS refers to a noun predicate sentence in which the noun of the predicate requires a modification part and does not have an equivalent relation with the subject. The NCS is a special construction both from a linguistic typology perspective and from a Japanese syntax perspective. NCS cover a wide range of semantic fields, and several classification systems have been attempted. However, because these classifications in the existing research depend on the lexical meanings of nouns of predicates, the individual categories are considered in parallel to each other, making it difficult to perceive a clear picture of relationships between them. This paper, therefore, focuses on a syntactic view of NCS, and on that basis, proposes the establishment of an NCS classification system. This paper will attempt to show that NCS can be classified into two main groups: those which can take cognitive subjects as their themes (Type I), and those which cannot take cognitive subjects as their themes (Type II). Type I constructions can be further divided into two patterns based on whether the cognitive subject has a person restriction (Type I-1, I-2). Type II constructions also can be further divided into two patterns, those which take cognitive objects as their themes (Type II-1), and those which do not take any themes (Type II-2). Bringing a syntactic perspective to the classification of NCS constructions has therefore made it possible to see the systemicity between the classes.

  • Report on the International Mother Language Day Forum

    • Authors: Jérémie BRIDE, Bruno JACTAT, Ruth VANBAELEN
      Pages: 91 - 120
Abstract: This paper reports on the International Mother Language Day Forum held at the University of Tsukuba (Japan), on February 22nd, 2019. Lectures followed by open discussion, documentary video screening and poster sessions, each took up the theme of mother tongue in a multilingual context. Taking a region of Europe and the former Dominion of Pakistan as case studies, Andrej Bekeš and Mohammad Abdul Malek discussed how cycles of violence, language repression and assimilatory policies have had, and continue to have, far-reaching consequences, leading not least to severe political, educational and economic oppression of targeted peoples. The event concluded with a Declaration to establish International Mother Language Day at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Tsukuba in order to recognize the value of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote the preservation, development and dissemination of mother tongues.

  • Research Evaluation in Humanities and Social Sciences

    • Authors: Yukihito MORIMOTO
      Pages: 131 - 135
Abstract: This paper reports on the Symposium for Research Evaluation in Humanities and Social Sciences which was held in Tokyo (Japan) on February 15th, 2019. Although citation-based research metrics might meet the needs in certain academic fields, when this methodology is applied to evaluate fields such as the Humanities and Social Sciences, it may fail to capture a proper picture of research in these fields. This symposium, therefore, brought together research institutes that are evaluated, public agencies which evaluate such institutes, as well as publishers who provide data for evaluation with the objective of discussing how they perceive research evaluation, how it should be, and what they expect from research metrics. 要旨

Abstract: Japanese returnees and Coda (Hearing Children of Deaf adults) are bilingual and bicultural groups, yet invisible in Japanese society. Both groups have experienced marginalization from their peers in Japan due to their language use and bicultural identity. Coda and returnees alike are shown to be seeking an identity that they can reconcile with their cultural context in Japan. This joint paper aims to develop the concepts of bilingualism and biculturalism by sharing the experiences of these unique minority groups in Japan.
