  • Claiming and Crossing Borders: A View on the Slovene-Croatian Border
           Dispute

    • Authors: Renata Jambrešić Kirin, Domagoj Račić
      Pages: 433 - 453
      Abstract:
Authors undertake the analysis of border disputes between Slovenia and Croatia as an example of socioeconomic processes typical of the European semi-periphery. The disputes over territorial claims and the acquisitions of Slovenian companies by their Croatian competitors are viewed as complementary processes of claiming and crossing borders, which are based on different notions of (national) sovereignty. The idea of sovereignty as control over territory is transformed and complemented into the notion of sovereignty as national ownership and control over economic assets. Cross-border takeover is thus interpreted as losing sovereignty over the national economy. The dispute over territorial claims has been since 2009 gradually replaced by media-covered business and financial transactions between major national companies (e.g. the case of Agrokor and Mercator). At the same time, borders are circumvented by wider processes of market consolidation and capital accumulation to which EU integration served as a facilitator. This places the issue of physical borders and territorial sovereignty as well as economic sovereignty largely into the symbolic arena.

  • How Internal Immigration Can Affect Income Inequality: The Italian Case
from an Economic and Juridical Perspective

    • Authors: Salvatore Villani, Luigi Ferrara, Giorgio Liotti
      Pages: 455 - 480
Abstract: A number of scholars are currently arguing that migration may have an important role in the reduction of inequality. It has happened before and it may also happen in the future, as it is possible and desirable. However, migration in itself does not resolve the issue of inequalities. At most, it would shift it forward, because redistribution through immigration does not exempt from previously creating a basic set of rules and institutions aimed at stimulating a major cooperation by countries to change the legal management systems of migration and correct their redistributive effects. In light of these studies, the present paper focuses on the regional impact of internal migration and attempts to demonstrate, with reference to the Italian case, how out-migration can increase income inequalities, thus hindering economic growth, while immigration can reduce income inequalities and mitigate economic imbalances. From a juridical point of view, we study the regional restrictions related to residence workers protection, the free movement of European workers and the welfare benefits for migrants.

  • Portrayal of the Croatian Probation Service's Development in Print
           Media

    • Authors: Ines Sucic
      Pages: 481 - 502
Abstract: Generally, research related to the media representation of probation is relatively rare, especially in jurisdictions without a long tradition of probation. The aims of this study were to investigate what themes emerged in constructing the public image of probation and who were probation's key promoters, and to analyse whether there was uniform presentation of probation in the media over time. The 390 newspaper articles related to probation that were published in national newspapers and magazines between 2009 and 2013 were analysed. The analysis showed that stories about probation were typically short, probation was typically not a main topic, and issues on probation were mainly superficially elaborated. Probation in Croatia has relatively low media visibility, but legislation, regulations, and expectations from probation emerged as main themes. Initially, reducing prison overcrowding and financial costs were the most frequently mentioned benefits of probation, but over time, attention shifted slightly towards focusing on the benefits of probationers' resocialisation and rehabilitation. The tone of the stories was generally positive or neutral, and politicians were the strongest advocates of the probation system. Media interest in probation fluctuated over the years, and probation has recently faced more criticism than before, most likely because of the many obstacles that it experienced in the course of becoming truly functional in practice.

  • The Role of Personality and Subject-Specific Motivation in Students'
Achievement in Math and Mother Tongue

    • Authors: Sonja Pečjak, Tina Pirc, Cirila Peklaj
      Pages: 503 - 522
Abstract: The aim of the study was to examine and to compare the relationships of different personality traits, subject-specific motivational dimensions and students' achievement in math and mother tongue in general upper secondary education, as well as how these variables predict their achievement. A total of 397 students attending the first year of general upper secondary education in Slovenia participated in the study. Different measures were used to assess students' personality traits, subject-specific interest, self-efficacy, volitional strategies and final grades in math and mother tongue. The results of the research showed different patterns of achievement predictors in both subjects and differences in the predictive power of included variables according to subjects. The included variables predicted 18% of variance in the Slovene language and 31% of variance in math. In both subjects, achievement was significantly positively predicted by self-efficacy and interest, and significantly negatively predicted by energy and procrastination. In math, agreeableness was also found as a significant negative predictor, and in Slovene language conscientiousness and immediate action were found as positive predictors of students' achievement. Implications of the study's findings are also discussed.

  • Can We Also Predict Electronic Peer Violence Based On the Predictors of
           Traditional Peer Violence'

    • Authors: Tena Velki, Gordana Kuterovac Jagodić
      Pages: 523 - 545
Abstract: The main aim of the study is to test whether the predictors of traditional peer violence consistently obtained in previous studies may also be good at predicting electronic peer violence. The predictability of individual (age, gender, school success), family (parental punishment, warmth, monitoring and permissiveness) and peer variables (number of friends, peer acceptance, previous victimization) were examined. The study included 880 students of fifth to eighth grade. Individual and peer variables were measured with a Questionnaire on violence among school children (UNSD) and parental variables with the Parental behavior questionnaire (URP-29). The results obtained by hierarchical regression analysis showed that the selected variables explain about 30% of the total variance of traditional violence and about 10% of the total variance of electronic violence. All the assumed variables proved to be significant predictors of traditional violence, while electronic violence had a smaller number of significant individual and family predictors. We can conclude that the current predictors of traditional violence only partially explain electronic violence, so we need to include some additional variables in order to better predict electronic peer violence (e.g., frequency of use of media, electronic victimization, etc.).

  • Wellbeing – Conceptual Background and Research Practices

    • Authors: Anna Maria Dluzewska
      Pages: 547 - 567
Abstract: The term wellbeing was introduced with the Gross National Product concept (understood as welfare) and then with the Bruntland Commission Statement, together with the concept of sustainable development. It gained momentum after the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2003, 2005), which opened a new field for interdisciplinary projects. The MEA concept means linking wellbeing to ecosystem services and to sustainable development, looking upon them as inextricable elements of one global process, which are necessary to ensure "our common future". Although the term wellbeing is used very frequently in research and literature, there is a lot of confusion about the content of its meaning. It is sometimes understood in purely economic terms, based on the MEA (2005) definition, from a medical/health point of view or in the socio-psychological way – as the fulfilment of needs or happiness. The article above is an attempt to present the main issues of conceptual background and research practices for wellbeing. The author begins with a conceptual background moving on to the research of wellbeing. The last part of the article gives an overview of participant disciplines (their methodologies and perspectives), the main research topics, and finally – the main gaps in contemporary research and challenges for future ones.
