  • The Theme

    • Authors: Andreja Brajša-Žganec
      Pages: 1 - 4
Abstract: Intergenerational Family Solidarity across Europe is the theme of this issue of the journal Društvena istraživanja. Intergenerational family solidarity is a construct that includes relationships among family members and their mutual exchange: relations of grandparents and their grandchildren, social support, quality of marital satisfaction,
intergenerational differences, the importance of the quality of relations of the elderly and their adult children. The quality of life of older family members is linked to reciprocity in relationships, the more involved the older members are in the family, the more satisfied with life they are; this is then reflected in different ways in the younger generations and vice versa. The texts in this issue combine a contemporary view of family relationships, described in the model of intergenerational solidarity by US scientist Vern L. Bengtson. The dimensions of this model are frequent contacts, emotional proximity, similarity in thought, geographical proximity, receiving help / helping,
contacts, proximity, i.e. different factors associated with the quality of life at different periods of an individual's life cycle.

  • Intergenerational Solidarity in Adulthood: The Role of Family Norms in
           Intergenerational Support and Ambivalence

    • Authors: Isabelle Albert, Dieter Ferring
      Pages: 5 - 25
Abstract: Starting from Bengtson's solidarity paradigm, we will investigate
the role of internalized family norms in intergenerational support
as well as experienced ambivalence from the adult child
perspective. We assume that internalized family norms are an
important determinant of relationship regulation as they have an
impact both on the selection of specific behavior as well as on its
evaluation. As a consequence, own and others' behavior should
be most positively evaluated if it is in line with internalized norms
and values. In contrast, if intergenerational solidarity and support
exchange do not converge with internalized norms and expectations,
ambivalence might be experienced. These assumptions are
      examined in a sample of N = 131 middle-aged adults living in
Luxembourg and Germany. Findings showed that normative
aspects of intergenerational solidarity were less important
compared to affective aspects when predicting support exchange
between adult children and their parents; however, family values
had a moderating role in the relation between support exchange
and ambivalence. Results are discussed with respect to the
centrality of values in implicitly and explicitly guiding support
      behavior within families.

  • Characteristics and Determinants of Intergenerational Financial Transfers
Within Families Using Mixed Care for Elderly People

    • Authors: Valentina Hlebec, Maša Filipovič Hrast
      Pages: 27 - 46
Abstract: The provision of care to dependent elderly parents or parents-in-
-law is an important part of intergenerational exchange within
families, especially in countries where the long-term care system
is based predominantly on family care. However, in mixed-care
networks, care tasks are shared between family members and
formal carers. Additionally, adult children may need to financially
help their parents, especially due to the financial burden that
formal care places on the elderly. We used the Slovenian national
survey of social home care users and their family members,
collected in 2013, to observe the characteristics and determinants
of intergenerational financial transfers in families that use mixed
care, within dyads comprising a care recipient and a family
caregiver. The findings show that there is a considerable
proportion of financial exchange among the observed dyads.
Furthermore, among the determinants, the income of the elderly
person and amount of care received are important for financial
flows upward (to the elderly parent) and downward (from the
elderly parent). The concurrent flows differ; their main
determinants are the carer's age, household size and education.

  • The Relationship between Social Support and Subjective Well-Being across
           the Lifespan

    • Authors: Andreja Brajša-Žganec, Ljiljana Kaliterna-Lipovčan, Ivana Hanzec
      Pages: 47 - 45
Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine how social support
measured as the subjective assessment of social support
adequacy given by family, friends or significant others contributes
to well-being (happiness, life satisfaction and domain satisfactions)
across the life span. The study was conducted on a representative
sample of the Croatian adult population (N = 1.000).
For the purpose of analyses the sample was divided into three
age groups: 18 to 40 years, 41 to 60 years, and 60+ years. The
results were analyzed by means of multiple group structural
equation modeling, which was performed separately for two
measures of subjective well-being (SWB – a general measure of
life satisfaction and happiness, PWI – domain satisfactions). The
results showed that in all three age groups, among three sources
of social support only the perceived social support from friends
was significantly related to both subjective well-being measures.
Participants who perceived adequate social support from friends
expressed higher levels of subjective well-being.

  • Intergenerational Family Solidarity of Immigrants from Two Successor
States of Former Yugoslavia Living in Austria

    • Authors: Ursula Trummer, Sonja Novak-Zezula
      Pages: 67 - 83
Abstract: Intergenerational Family Solidarity (IGFS) is important for social
cohesion and challenged by migration. Scientific evidence on
how migrants sustain IGFS is scarce. In 2016, 421,875 migrants
from different Former Yugoslav Republics were residing in
Austria, the majority coming from Bosnia and Herzegovina
(162.021) and Serbia (137.057). Immigrants from these
countries are predominantly economic migrants who came in the
1960s and refugees of the Balkan wars in the 1990s. A literature
review showed that intergenerational solidarity in migrant families
in Austria is hardly covered by previous research. No published
studies explicitly dealing with this subject were found. To generate
more understanding, three migrant women who migrated as
refugees in the 1990s from Bosnia and Serbia were asked about
their family structures, family life, and family solidarity through
semi-structured in-depth interviews based on qualitative sociological
method. Results show that although immigration has
weakened IGFS in terms of frequency of contact, high normative
solidarity prevails and results in feelings of guilt and non-met
family responsibilities. Support of parents and relatives is
sustained by sending money and goods to the home country.

  • The Role of Hope and Self-Esteem in the Relation between Economic Pressure
           and Life Satisfaction of Adolescents

    • Authors: Barbara Brdovčak, Marina Merkaš, Marija Šakić Velić
      Pages: 87 - 108
Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine whether hope and self-
-esteem are moderators and/or mediators in the relation
between perceived economic pressure and life satisfaction of
adolescents. The study included 348 children (219 girls),
mean age 15 years, from seven primary and four secondary
schools located in the city of Zagreb and its surroundings.
Perceived economic pressure was assessed using the eight
economic strain items of the Responses to Stress
Questionnaire (Wadsworth & Compas, 2002), hope was
measured with the Children's Hope Scale (Snyder et al.,
1997), self-esteem was measured with the short version of
the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg et al., 1989),
and life satisfaction was measured with the Brief
Multidimensional Students' Life Satisfaction Scale (Selingson
et al., 2003). The results show that self-esteem is not a
moderator, but a partial mediator in the relation between
economic pressure and life satisfaction of girls. Similarly,
hope was a partial mediator, and not a moderator in the
relation between economic pressure and life satisfaction of
boys and girls. The findings of this study show that part of
the negative impact of economic pressure on adolescent life
satisfaction can be explained by the adverse effect of
economic pressure on self-esteem and hope among
adolescents, i.e. by reducing self-esteem and hope.

  • Prejudice toward National Minorities: Exploring the Role of Different
           Forms of National Attachment

    • Authors: Lea Skokandić, Dinka Čorkalo Biruški
      Pages: 109 - 131
Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore relative contribution of
several dispositional (right-wing authoritarianism and social
dominance orientation) identity (national identity, nationalism
and cosmopolitism) and situational antecedents (perception
of intergroup threat) of subtle and blatant ethnic prejudice,
along with multigroup moderation effect of national identity.
The participants were 582 undergraduate students of
University of Zagreb. Research has shown that high and low
national identifiers significantly differ in all measures, except
on orientation on social domination. Path analysis of
composite results on latent variable has proven significant
role of symbolic intergroup threat and dispositional factors in
prediction of prejudice toward national minorities, whereas
national attachment and national identity strength did not
have strong impact on prediction. Implications of these
results, namely limited possibilities for predicting subtle
prejudice with this set of predictors, will be thoroughly
      discussed in this paper.

  • A Shift in Perceiving Organisational Metaphors among Business
Administration Students in an EU Country: A Window into the Current
           Thinking of Future Employees

    • Authors: Barbara Grah, Vlado Dimovski, Judita Peterlin
      Pages: 133 - 154
Abstract: This article aims to offer an insight into which metaphors future
employees use to perceive an organisation as a concept. The
results of inductive content analysis, based on a sample of 208
business students, show that students offer a varied set of
metaphors that are vivid and provide new perspectives. The
metaphor of the organisation as a machine and a living
organism is still frequently used, although most often an
organisation is understood in terms of linkages among social
entities. Nevertheless, the ability to comprehend multiple
perspectives and use critical judgments is a necessary skill
educators must pass on to future generations living in a world
characterised by rapid, almost unlimited access to information
through the Internet and other media.

  • Attitudes towards Citizen Participation in the Local Decision-Making
           Process: A Comparative Analysis

    • Authors: Dubravka Jurlina Alibegović, Suncana Slijepčević
      Pages: 155 - 157
Abstract: A very important pillar of democracy is the involvement of
citizens in the political decision-making process. The change
from "government" to "governance", which has been also
noticed in the literature, implies a greater involvement of
different stakeholders in the decision-making process and
in the process of public policy implementation. Citizens'
participation in the process of public services delivery may
lead to better public services, which comply with the needs
of citizens, better decisions, higher quality and more efficient
collaboration in using public money for public services.
This research empirically tests attitudes towards greater
citizens' involvement in the decision-making process at the
local level. We compare attitudes of local councillors in 16
countries divided according to the expanded Hesse-Sharpe
(1991) typology. The analysis is based on the result of a
survey conducted among local city councillors. We examine
different mechanisms of citizen participation in the decision-
-making process from the comparative perspective. Our research
showed voting to be the most preferable mechanism
for public participation in all groups of countries, while
citizens' juries are the least preferable mechanism for citizen
participation. This research contributes to filling the research
gap concerning the role and the importance of citizens'
