  • Relationship between Financial Satisfaction and Financial Literacy:
           Exploring Gender Differences

    • Authors: Ivona Škreblin Kirbiš, Maja Vehovec, Zvonimir Galić
      Pages: 165 - 185
Abstract: The goals of this study were to explore gender differences in the components of financial literacy (financial knowledge, financial attitude and financial behavior) and financial satisfaction, and to explore gender differences in the relationship between financial satisfaction and the financial literacy components. Analyses conducted on a data collected on a large and heterogeneous sample of Croatian citizens (N = 900) showed that men scored higher on some financial literacy variables and were more financially satisfied. Moreover, in the male subsample there were significantly stronger correlations between financial satisfaction and some financial literacy variables (rational financial attitude, self-assessment of financial management and monitoring expenses) when compared to the female subsample. In addition to demographic variables, significant predictors of financial satisfaction in both gender groups were primarily financial behaviors. Financial attitude component explained additional financial satisfaction variance for men but not for women. Financial knowledge as the third component was not a significant predictor of financial satisfaction for either gender.

  • Society and Corruption: Political Influence in Professional Structures of
Public Institutions as a Risk Factor for Corruption

    • Authors: Renato Matić
      Pages: 187 - 206
Abstract: The paper analyzes the correlation of political influence in the professional structures of public institutions with corruption risk. The goal is to determine, based on qualitative data, how favourable general political influence and political appointments in professional public institutions (as opposed to transparency and professional autonomy) are for the development and sustainability of corruption. Qualitative empirical research using the method of semi- -structured interviews was conducted with 60 participants from 10 countries, divided into two groups according to the Corruption Perceptions Index. Indicators of the presence of political influence in public structures are: participants’ experience on the mobility of institutional services, experience of the presence of political staffing in professional structures, and the experience of the possibility of predictable career management based on clear institutional criteria. The results of the interviews show that between societies which differ according to the perception of corruption there is an experiential difference in the presence of these indicators, and that the political influence of the professional structures of public institutions can be considered as a factor of corruption risk.

  • Was Županov Right' Testing the Origin and Persistence of the
           Egalitarian Syndrome

    • Authors: Vuk Vuković, Aleksandar Štulhofer, Ivan Burić
      Pages: 207 - 225
Abstract: The egalitarian syndrome theory (Županov, 1970) is the most significant Croatian theory of societal development. As opposed to Županov’s interpretation according to which the egalitarian syndrome (ES) is defined by the legacy of the premodern agrarian culture which was further embedded under socialism, some critics of this theory believe that the values which form the ES are a reaction to the costs of the post- -socialist transition and the war for independence. In this paper, these two confronted explanations of the origin of the ES are empirically tested and arguments for the persistence of its specific set of values are questioned. The results of the multivariate regression analysis on the county level show that the share of agricultural population from the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s – and not the social costs of war and transition in the 1990s – is a significant predictor of the county level of ES at the beginning of 2016, thus confirming the hypothesis of its persistence. The results of this paper imply that the ES is an inherited set of values which still affects everyday life in Croatia today, thus aggravating its socioeconomic development.

  • Emotional Determinants of Exhaustion and Job Satisfaction of Elementary
           School Teachers

    • Authors: Ivana Macuka, Irena Burić, Ivana Batur
      Pages: 227 - 248
Abstract: The teaching profession can be considered an emotionally demanding one since teachers usually experience a wide variety of pleasant and unpleasant emotions of significant intensity. Such emotions, as well as the strategies teachers may implement in order to regulate them, can have a significant impact on teachers' well-being, burnout, job satisfaction and their intention to stay in the profession. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of different pleasant and unpleasant emotions that teachers experience in relation to their students, parents, colleagues and the educational system in general, as well as the emotional labor strategies they implement to regulate such emotions, in explaining teachers' emotional exhaustion (as a key component of burnout) and job satisfaction. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that teachers' emotions and emotional labor strategies have a unique significant contribution in explaining the variance of emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction. Teachers who experience higher levels of unpleasant emotions of fatigue, anger and disappointment, and use surface acting more frequently, also experience higher levels of emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, teachers who experience joy and pride in relation to their students more intensely, and freely express their naturally felt emotions, are more satisfied with their job. Finally, teachers who experience a higher intensity of fatigue and disappointment, and those who use surface acting more frequently, are less satisfied with their job.

  • How Much, Why and How Adolescents Watch Television: Implications for
           Affective Well-Being

    • Authors: Jadranka Pavić, Majda Rijavec, Lana Jurčec
      Pages: 249 - 267
Abstract: This study was conducted in order to assess the contribution of the amount of television viewing, television viewing motives and cognitive involvement in the explanation of affective well-being of younger adolescents. The sample comprised 537 7th and 8th graders in ten primary schools located in Zagreb. In addition to self-assessment of the amount of television viewing, Television viewing motives scale, Cognitive involvement scales and Positive and Negative Affect Scale for Children – PANAS C were applied. Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that television viewing motives explained a rather high percentage of negative affect and somewhat lesser percentage of positive affect. Cognitive involvement in viewing explained a small amount of variance, while the amount of television viewing was not found to be a significant predictor of either positive or negative emotions. Generally, it can be concluded that how much adolescents watch television is not related to their affective well-being, how they watch it is weakly correlated, while why they do it has the biggest role, especially for negative emotions.

  • Strategic Geography. The Relationship between Geographical Space and
           National Power

    • Authors: Marinko Lozančić, Borna Fuerst-Bjeliš
      Pages: 269 - 289
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to determine the subject of study of strategic geography as a geographic subdiscipline and to define its theoretical concept within the context of the interdisciplinary field of geography. The emphasis is placed on defining the significance of geographical space in the function of the synergy of national power as well as on formulating national interests and their strategic operationalization in the process of achieving national goals in an international environment. The paper presents a theoretical and methodological concept of studying geographical space which implies an interdisciplinary approach and comprehensiveness of the study of an interactively and functionally interconnected living environment. The aim of the study of strategic geography is scientific knowledge and an evaluation of the role of geographic factors in the modification of spatial and functional dynamics. Its singling out as a separate scientific subdiscipline is the result of an internal subject of study based on the analysis and singling out of dominant geographic characteristics relevant from the point of view of the analysis and synthetic judgement of the geographical sources of potential national power. Geographical space, i.e. geographic factors, processes, connections and relations as potential sources of comparative advantages in the process of defining national interests, and in the formulation and implementation of national strategies, represent strategic geography's subject of study. The most important study procedure of strategic geography is directed at geographic and resource advantages of national space and human potential in the international context.
