  • Cuerpos de Mujeres, Ciudadanía y Violencia / Women's Bodies,
           Citizenship and Violence

    • Authors: Ximena Goecke
This paper proposes a reflection on women’s citizenship in Chile. Chilean women, struggled to become recognized as citizens for decades, getting that legal status in the second third of the twentieth century. However, when examining the conditions under which women´s citizenship unfolds, it is clear that this process was not successful. Chilean women got an incomplete and imperfect citizenship, and they are daily victims of symbolic and even physical violence, whenever they get involved in politics. Therefore, their political status was not only a matter of law, but the result of the conditions of subordination and dependency which constitute the pillars that our socioeconomic system requires for its reproduction. Getting a truly full citizenship, with pluralistic and equal participation of women requires a discussion about the kind of democracy we want, and from the women perspective -just like Julieta Kirkwood stated- A new democratic ideal which may challenge the interweaving between the neoliberal system and this exclusive democracy. A debate which is particularly relevant nowadays, when Chileans are searching for a formula to produce a new Constitution.

avenue. Cultural festivals and public space in the construction of an
           imaginary of democracy

    • Authors: Carla Pinochet Cobos
This article pays attention to the rol that cultural festivals have played in the building of a social imaginary of democracy, in the Social Democrat governments after the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1989). Unlike marches and political demonstrations (that were suppressed and criminalized) these cultural uses of the streets were one of the few ways in which the subjects exercised massive forms of sociability, strengthening citizen ties, and a significant key in the building of political legitimacy. Taking the analysis of two contemporary festivals as a starting point, this paper seeks to develop a reflection on how these exceptional cultural dynamics played a role in instituting an imaginary of democratic life, offering spaces for a symbolic problematization of us.

reexistencia cultural latinoamericana / Mesianism and baroque ethos:
critical figures for Latin American cultural resistance and re-existence

    • Authors: Christian Soazo Ahumada
This paper describes the critical figures of mesianism and baroque ethos as fundamental categories to understand Latin American subaltern praxis. Considering the figure of the baroque ethos as a category that confronts the crucial elements of modern episteme, its functional and fictional logic, it is considered a baroque resistance as a form of survival to the logic of Western domination. In the case of mesianism as political category is postulated a way of re-existence by appealing to the critical exteriority of the excluded, those that come from both the Semitic culture facing the Greco-Roman Totality and indigenous cultures from the Spanish conquest, with the common aim to do inoperative the system of domination, through a withdrawal into the mere contingency and the reconsideration of the forms and particular uses of life, which cannot be subsumed for the capitalist system and the political and legal order.

Teófilo Cid / The road of the mirror and the river of the night: around
           the poetry of Teófilo Cid

    • Authors: Claudio Guerrero Valenzuela
This article focuses on the post avant-garde work of Chilean poet Teofilo Cid. This is not usually part of the repertoire of critical reception.            Estado de seguridad social chileno, 1920-1930 / The political meaning of
family during the Chilean Welfare State institutionalization, 1920-1930

    • Authors: Francisca Rengifo
This article examines the Chilean State’s commitment to the families' welfare, and the specific policies that it designed and implemented to achieve this goal. The analysis of the articulation of benefits in public health and pensions during the formulation and the institutionalization of the Social Security in the 1920s and 1930s, shows that there was an important gap between the legal model of family and the specific ways in which those policies were based applied. At the same time, by analyzing the relation between the state and families, it is possible to understand how the state operated at the social base, and to reassert the political relevance of the family.

body and affection in sociological theory

This article seeks to contribute to the understanding of subjectivity within sociological theory, specifically in the sociology of action. To this end, it is proposed as a hypothesis the need to understand the affections to analyze the responsiveness of the subject to the systemic processes that determine it. In this direction, it is recognized, in first place, the importance of subjectivity to diagnose the crisis of the modern project, a central element in classical sociology. Second, the sociology of the subject outlined by Alain Touraine -identifying the problematic relationship between subjectivity and body- is reviewed. Finally, Spinoza and Butler's ontology of the body is used to identify the affection nature of the responsiveness of the subject.

homicidio de Natalia Gaitán como caso / Sexualities as limits of the
Integrated World Capitalism. The homicide of Natalia Gaitan as a case

Recognizing the problem of the subject as product of the power of the legal system, and taking the homicide of Natalia Gaitan as a case, the article analyses the resistances of the legal system, the mobilization of  LGBT and human rights movements, and the impact of the case on the actors’ perspective.

  • Ciudades de Sísifo. Urbanismo Colonial y Contingencia / Cities of
           Sisyphus. Colonial Urbanism and Contingency

    • Authors: Rodrigo Castro Orellana
The article studies the kind of rationality that would be at stake in the process of founding of colonial cities in America. It is intended to establish that the conquest-urban during sixteenth Century would be the realization of a supposed classic-Cartesian reason, nor the condition of possibility of modern dream of total order of reality. By contrast, the urbanizing dynamic obey to practical criteria and situational needs that tried to respond to the vulnerability faced by the conquerors. This hypothesis is shown by describing the phenomenon of nomadism of Hispanic urban complexes studied by Alain Musset. This research shows that the colonial city was the result of a series of supervening facts and that the colonizing power was always conditioned by contingent realities and specific practices of Spaniards and Indians.

  • Vida y comunidad en la fotografía de Sergio Larraín / Life and community
in the photography of Sergio Larraín

In this paper, through the observation of photographs of children and animals by Sergio Larrain, the study of its technical procedures (framing, offscreen, the use of deph of field and the presence of blurred images) and through the reading of some of his letters, in which he reflects about photography and life (understood as bios), I intend to question the modern reading which represents the author's work as humanist. These photographs provide presence and mobility to children and animals, so that in his work a continuity can be traced starting from the notions of community and immunity, as defined by Roberto Espósito. Thus, from a biopolitical point of view, the work of Larrain acquires a contemporaneity that questions the traditional ways of understanding art, life and community.
