  • Lifestyles among the Porfirian elites in the city of La Paz, Mexico

: This paper aims to explain the way of life among the elite of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico during the Porfiriato, from three aspects of material culture: housing, food and clothing. It starts from the idea that commercial activity helped modernity, understood as the change in consumption patterns that became a new cultural behavior in the lifestyles of wealthier social sectors, distinguished by their luxury and comfort, which was taken from the French capital, considered the symbol of universal culture. The strategy to promote that change was focused on the architectural design of the buildings, particularly, in the departmental organization of these commercial sites and the advertisements in the local press.

  • Traditional circus in Chile. The form of life and image of art

: Regardless of its peculiarities, it is usual to suppose that the circus is an art like theatre or contemporary dance. Through this consideration, a temptation of using the image of art in order to understand what occurs in the traditional circus in Chile rises. In this article this temptation is addressed into question through a description of some features related to the members of the traditional circus form of life. My objective it is not questioning the practical use of the affinity between the art and circus, but to show the limits of the image of art to make an epistemic approach of the traditional circus. Hence, that discussion it is held that a better way to understand the dynamics related to the traditional circus is the image of the professional associations.

  • Contentions by the city: criminalization, deaths and political
organization around sexual diversity in Tijuana

: This article examines how gender and sexuality are part of the internal boundaries of Tijuana. With the analysis of the discourses of the newspaper, in contrast to interviews with its key informants, it is noted that there are disputes for the internal boundaries of the city. Located between the decades of the seventies and nineties, the study emphasizes how the control and regulation of sexualities account for the political actions of subjects acting, they reinvent themselves and are involved in the production of the city. It is exposed, first, a conceptual discussion on the delimitation of the borders regarding sexualities subsequently referred to the political and social conservatism in Tijuana, then mention the repression and killings against the mujercitos it is mentioned. As a conclusion, the disputes and political organization around sexual diversity make the internal borders in Tijuana.

  • Deportation and forced family separation at the San Diego-Tijuana Border

: Deportations from the United States have led to the separation of thousands of undocumented mothers and fathers from their children. Focusing on the San Diego-Tijuana border, this article explores how immigration policy came to permit, if not prescribe, forced family separation. By employing a multi-dimensional analytical framework, it focuses on the interplay of: the globalization of expulsion; the historical use of deportation as a form of population control in the border area; the interconnections of the immigration and child welfare systems; and the day-to-day praxis of deportation. It is argued that forced family separation has deep roots in the San Diego-Tijuana border, the legislative regimes of immigration and child welfare and their praxis, all of which have led to its “normalization” in the region.

  • The history of independent theater in Buenos Aires: the importance of
           Boedo and Florida

: In the 20s, many of the intellectuals of Buenos Aires were divided into two groups: Boedo and Florida. The first advocated a social art, to invite the workers to act. The second sought to renew the literature for aesthetic purposes. The Florida expressed his gaze through the newspaper Martin Fierro; and Boedo did it from the magazines Los Pensadores and Claridad. Tribuna del pensamiento izquierdista. In turn, on November 30th, 1930, the boedista Leónidas Barletta created the Teatro del Pueblo, with this starting the movement of independent theaters in the city. The purpose of this paper is to analyze how the theatrical art is discussed in the mentioned means to observe what link with the theater proposes each one and what traits, which would then be promoted by Barletta and independent theater, had been scattered in them.

  • Sociocultural and demographic characterization of trans people in Cuba.
           Discriminatory attitudes towards them

: The objectives of this article are to identify sociocultural and demographic characteristics of the trans people in Cuba, and to know the attitudes of Cubans towards these people. As part of the methodological design of the work was included a set of questions that made it possible to have the information to achieve a reasoned approach to the proposed objectives. At the national level, the study is valuable because, for the first time, the trans population can be treated in a differentiated way according to their particularities. Nevertheless, there are no precedents in this respect that allow to know the evolution of the associated characteristics and problems. Results show that the number of trans surpasses three thousand people, whose sociocultural characteristics point to them as a poorly favored group and that the discriminatory attitudes they suffer differ according to the demographic attributes of the population that exerts them.

  • Attitudes toward Yucatec Maya among bilingual speakers in Cancun’s
           90 th borough

: This study attempts to identify the linguistic attitudes toward Yucatec Maya held by a group of bilingual (Maya/Spanish) Yucatecos residing in Cancun’s 90th borough (Región 90). These attitudes were examined using a sociolinguistic questionnaire exploring attitudes within families, schools and urban contexts. The results show that participants thought it is important to speak Yucatec Maya in those spaces. Despite the limitations inherent to the questionnaire as a research method, this paper is a contribution to understanding the situation of Yucatec Maya in the city of Cancun, where positive attitudes for the Mayan language seem to prevail.

  • Infanticide and popular discipline in Sonora, Mexico’s judicial
           system between 1855 and 1929

: The objective of this article is to explore why local communities began to use their judiciary in new ways to discipline women accused of infanticide, abortion, and infant abandonment during the Porfiriato. This work uses gender analysis of criminal trials to uncover changes in the local gender order and to argue that disruptions in masculine identities contributed to increased policing of women’s sexual conduct and efforts to use the State to maintain a traditional moral order during a period of rapid change. Infanticide trials provided a space for discourses of ethnic, economic and gender inferiority towards women, especially young single women who hid their pregnancies. This study finds that State agents were not unified in their treatment of female criminality, but popular pressure still played a role in expanding the reach of State power to impose moral order and provide a platform for public shaming of female sexuality.

: The objective of this article is to explore why local communities began to use their judiciary in new ways to discipline women accused of infanticide, abortion, and infant abandonment during the Porfiriato.
