  • Defining the others: academic narratives about diversity at school

    • Abstract: Resumen: Este artículo indaga en los usos académicos del concepto diversidad en el ámbito escolar a partir del análisis de la literatura científica española. El método se basa en el análisis documental partiendo de una exhaustiva búsqueda y revisión de 218 artículos publicados entre 2006 y 2012 en revistas indexadas en CSIC-ISOC y DIALNET. Se aplicó un esquema estructural de análisis que permitió identificar diferentes configuraciones narrativas en torno a la definición del "otro" en la escuela. Los resultados señalan dos relatos hegemónicos: institucional, basado en las clasificaciones legislativas del alumnado en función de sus capacidades y rendimientos escolares; e intercultural, sustentado en categorizaciones en torno a las diferencias culturales derivadas de la condición inmigrante-extranjera. Concluimos que en ambos relatos se proyecta predominantemente una visión esencializada de la diversidad construida desde parámetros dicotómicos y excluyentes, sin apenas considerar otras categorías sociales y económicas en la conformación de las diferencias y desigualdades educativas.Abstract: The present paper reviews Spanish social scientific literature analyzing the employment of the "diversity" concept applied to the school field. The research methodology started with detailed scrutiny and examination of the Social Sciences journals indexed in CSIC-ISOC and DIALNET databases, published between 2006 and 2012, followed by the documentary analysis of 218 articles extracted from those sources. Discourse analysis enables us to single out distinct narrative configurations about how "the other" is defined at school grounds. Results show two hegemonic narrative patterns: an institutional narrative based upon the legal sorting of students classified by scholar results and abilities, and an intercultural narrative constructed around cultural categories that would differentiate nationals from foreigners. We conclude that both accounts unveil predominantly essentialized views of the "diversity" idea and its conceptualization, failing to ponder over other social and economic categories when addressing school related inequalities and differences.
  • Intercultural discourses and assimilationist practices: some
           contradictions in the spanish educational system

    • Abstract: Resumen: En este artículo se analiza el grado de coherencia entre el discurso legal, teórico y formal acerca de la gestión de la diversidad y la realidad de las prácticas pedagógicas en las instituciones educativas formales. Con este fin se aborda una revisión teórica de las distintas leyes educativas, de los discursos del profesorado y de las prácticas pedagógicas a partir de investigaciones precedentes. El principal resultado apunta a la existencia de algunas contradicciones: el concepto de asimilación cultural al mismo tiempo que se desprecia, tanto en la legislación educativa como en el discurso explícito y consciente del profesorado, acaba siendo el adoptado en la mayoría de las prácticas educativas. Este hallazgo conduce a algunas conclusiones respecto a la necesidad de repensar y redefinir el concepto de asimilación cultural desde la perspectiva de la igualdad y de una concepción crítica de la etnicidad y de la identidad.Abstract: This article analyzes the degree of coherence amongst the legal, theoretical and formal speech about diversity management and the reality of the pedagogical practices in formal educational institutions. To that end is addressed a theoretical review of the different educational laws, the speeches of the teaching staff and educational practices from previous researches. The main result points to the existence of some contradictions: the concept of cultural assimilation at the same time that it is despised, both in educational legislation and in explicit and conscious teaching staff speech, ends up being the one adopted in most of the educational practices. This finding leads to some conclusions regarding the need to rethink and redefine the concept of cultural assimilation from the perspective of equality and a critical conception of ethnicity and identity.
  • Isocrates and the origin of civic education. Validity of a classical

    • Abstract: Resumen: Isócrates ha sido descuidado como una figura señera entre los grandes pensadores políticos de la Grecia antigua. El presente ensayo rescata el legado de este filósofo, particularmente su trabajo como educador cívico, hoy tan necesario para construir ciudadanía. El método que utilizó para promover la democracia fue la deliberación pública, no solamente a través de la discusión verbal sino también de la difusión de escritos. En consecuencia, Isócrates contribuyó a crear espacios de discusión muy semejantes a lo que ahora conocemos como "esfera pública". Lo que ponemos de relieve es que Isócrates creyó en el papel de la palabra como eje transformador tanto de los hombres como del régimen político. El ideal de democracia que tuvo en mente fue el régimen instaurado por Solón y Clístenes. Siempre tuvo en cuenta ese modelo para restaurar la vida cívica en Atenas y en las ciudades Estado de la Grecia antigua.Abstract: Isocrates has been neglect as one of the main figures of the main political thought. This essay tries his philosophical legacy, particularly his work as civic educator. Today it is necessary because it is indispensable to construct citizenship. His method in order to promote democracy was public deliberation not only to verbal discussion but also to the diffusion of his writings. Isocrates promoted the creation of public spaces in which the deliberation was possible. That is why he is consider a contributor of the "public spaces" as we know it today. What we underline is that Isocrates believed in the value of the word as the main transformation of the man and the political regimes. The democracy that he had in mind was the regime set up by Solon and Clistenes. He always took into account this model in order to restore the civic life in Athens and the good government in the political communities in Greece. Isocrates was enemy of the barbarians and demagogues.
  • Impact of intercultural teaching induction training. A review of research

    • Abstract: Resumen: El avance teórico y normativo de la educación en y para la diversidad cultural ha subrayado la necesidad de adecuar la formación inicial del profesorado al carácter plural de la realidad social y educativa. Este artículo centra su atención en las investigaciones empíricas desarrolladas entre 2005 y 2012 y destinadas a analizar el impacto que tienen los programas de formación inicial docente comprometidos con la diversidad cultural en los futuros profesores. Los resultados proporcionan información sobre los factores clave que influyen en el éxito o fracaso de las propuestas de formación, así como de las acciones formativas que tienen más impacto y de las limitaciones metodológicas más frecuentes de esta línea de investigación.Abstract: The theoretical and normative advance of multicultural education has stressed the need to adapt preservice teacher education to the plural nature of social and educational reality. This article focuses on the empirical research conducted between 2005 and 2012 and aimed to analyze the impact of preservice teacher education programs committed to cultural diversity on future education professionals. Findings provide information on key factors that influence the success or failure of teacher training proposals, as well as training actions that have the most impact and the methodological limitations most frequent in this research area.

    • Abstract: Resumen: En este artículo se analiza la participación de las familias en la escuela, indagando sobre las problemáticas específicas que pueden presentar las familias extranjeras, actuando como elementos fronterizos para una eficaz comunicación entre escuela, profesorado y núcleo familiar. Los objetivos a los que responde el artículo son: 1) analizar el modo como las familias autóctonas y extranjeras participan en el ámbito escolar, así como 2) conocer las actividades organizadas desde los centros con la intención de promover la participación. Con un enfoque metodológico etnográfico, la recogida de los datos se ha realizado en dos contextos geográficos: Sevilla y Jaén, donde se ha desarrollado un estudio de caso en un centro educativo de cada una de las ciudades citadas. A la luz de los datos obtenidos, se hace hincapié en que la participación de las familias en los centros educativos no depende directamente de la extranjeridad de las mismas, pero sí del interés familiar por la educación y la escuela y las prácticas y actuaciones puestas en marcha desde los colegios para posibilitar el acceso igualitario en la participación.Abstract: This article analyzes the participation of families in the school, inquiring about the specific problems that they can present the foreign families, acting as border elements to effective communication between school, teachers and family. The objectives that responds the article are: 1) analyze the way in which foreign and native families participate in schools, as well as, 2) the activities organized since the centres with the intention of promoting participation. An ethnographic methodological approach, the collection of data has been done in two geographical contexts, Seville and Jaén, in which a case study has been developed in a school of each of the above cities. In the light of the data obtained, stresses that the participation of families in schools not depends directly on the foreignness of the same, but the family interest in education and school and practices and actions implemented since the schools to provide equal access to participation.
  • Epistemological assumptions on social mobility's analysis

    • Abstract: Resumen: El presente artículo tiene como objetivo general identificar la corriente que hegemonizó los estudios de movilidad social desde sus inicios, las implicancias políticas de la misma (en relación con la idea de igualdad), y a la par presentar una alternativa para no desechar la idea de movilidad social, pero insertarla en el estudio complejo, relacional y combinado de los procesos de estructuración de clase. De manera particular, buscamos dar cuenta cómo ambas propuestas tienen efectos diferenciales a la hora de explicar los procesos de igualdad-desigualdad en las sociedades latinoamericanas contemporáneas. Se presenta una síntesis de la postura estructural funcionalista sobre la movilidad social, poniéndola en relación con las inferencias (interpretativas y políticas), que se pueden hacer a partir de la misma y luego una propuesta alternativa para pensar la movilidad social en el ámbito de los procesos de estructuración de clases en los cuales las políticas sociales tienen un rol fundamental, al promover diferentes gradientes de distribución del ingreso, entre otros elementos, con efectos regresivos o redistribuidos sobre la desigualdad de clase. Las trayectorias de clase aparecen como el concepto que conjugarían dichos procesos, dentro de una mirada relacional de las clases sociales.Abstract: The main objective of this article is to identify the hegemonic perspective on social mobility studies, the political assumptions of this, and present an alternative. This alternative would allow us to use the social mobility concept but regarding the study of the social class structuring processes. Particularly, we try to show how both alternatives have different explanations for social inequality on Latin American societies. A synthesis of the functionalist vision is presented, in association with the interpretative and political inferences that emerge from it. Then, an alternative proposal that allows us to consider social mobility in the field of class structuring processes, in which social policies have a key role by promoting different gradients of income distribution, with regressive or redistributed effects on class inequality. Class paths appear as the concept that joins these processes within a relational view of social classes.
  • Domination, masculine sexuality and prostitution in Spain: why do Spanish
           men consume paid sex'

    • Abstract: Resumen: Este artículo se centra en el estudio de los clientes de prostitución en España, con el propósito de entender por qué los hombres acuden al sexo de pago. Para responder a esta interrogante, se analizaron los discursos de los hombres consumidores de prostitución mediante entrevistas en profundidad semidirigidas, entrevistas grupales y grupos de discusión. Con el fin de estructurar coherentemente las narraciones obtenidas y clasificarlas en categorías se aplicó el marco teórico del "frame analysis". Se obtuvieron cuatro tipos ideales de cliente: misógino (odio a la mujer); consumista (todo se compra y vende); amigo (afectivo aunque abusa); y crítico (ocasional y arrepentido). Desde nuestra perspectiva, la compra de sexo de pago no se produce por la búsqueda de sexo de calidad, diversión y disfrute hedonista, sino que es una estrategia de refuerzo de una masculinidad conformada por una identidad que gira en torno a la exhibición frente al grupo de pares.Abstract: This paper studies focuses on clients of prostitution in Spain in order to understand why these men pay for sex. We analyzed the narratives of users clients of prostitution through in-depth semi-directed interviews, group interviews, and discussion groups. This material is given structure by the application of the theory of frame analysis. We obtained four ideal client types of clients were obtained, namely: misogynist (hatred of women), consumerist (everything is for sale), friend (affectionate but abusive), and critic (ocasional and repentant). We reach the conclusion that From this point of view the purchase of sex has nothing to do with is not due to the searching for quality sex, fun and hedonistic pleasure, but rather it is a strategy to that reinforces a masculine identity that conforms molded by to the expectations of the peer group.
  • The role of the State before population aging: case of Chile

    • Abstract: Resumen: Los Estados deben establecer las bases para que las personas envejezcan con condiciones de vida adecuadas en todos sus ámbitos. Considerando este desafío, se ha planteado como propósito cardinal de la presente investigación describir el papel que ha jugado el Estado chileno, para enfrentar el Envejecimiento Poblacional (EP), desarrollando para ello un análisis que determine la relación entre las medidas implementadas y los objetivos de la política pública creada para este fin. Para lograr los propósitos indagativos, se realizó un estudio exploratorio-descriptivo, analizando las principales variables que conforman el proceso e identificando los componentes esenciales del mismo. Si bien se han tomado medidas que buscan enfrentar este contexto, no está claro si responden a lineamientos estratégicos definidos o a medidas reactivas surgidas de la respuesta tardía a problemas ya existentes; lo que queda claro es que los Estados deben actuar oportunamente frente a este desafío que se presenta.Abstract: States must establish the basis for people to age with adequate living conditions in all areas. Therefore, the cardinal purpose of this research is to describe the role played by the Chilean state to face Population Aging, PA, developing for this an analysis that determines the relation between the implemented measures and the objectives of the public policy created for this purpose. To achieve the research purposes, an exploratory-descriptive study was carried out, analyzing the main variables involved in the process and identifying the essential components. Although actions that seek to face this context have been taken, it is unclear if they respond to defined strategic guidelines or reactive policymaking arising from the delayed response to existing problems, what is clear is that States must act promptly to deal with this present challenge.
  • Language and ideology. Apropos of the new Spanish abortion draft bill

    • Abstract: Resumen: Este estudio se centra en el análisis de los titulares de prensa relacionados con el anteproyecto de la ley del aborto desde un punto de vista lingüístico e ideológico. Para llevar a cabo este propósito, hemos creado un corpus de cincuenta titulares de prensa donde se alude a la nueva ley que pretende regular el aborto en el Estado español. Los datos se han estudiando a la luz del paradigma discursivo siguiendo una metodología cualitativa. Tras el análisis pragmático y discusión de los resultados, podemos afirmar que los titulares de la prensa conservadora se caracterizan por una postura antiabortista, mientras que los de centro-izquierda defienden la ley orgánica 2/2010. Por tanto, se puede concluir que, en España, la prensa de derechas apoya al gobierno actual en cuestiones relacionadas con el aborto, mientras que la prensa más liberal se opone frontalmente a esas medidas.Abstract: This linguistic study examines headlines across Spain's national press featuring the new abortion draft bill from an ideological point of view. In order to achieve this goal, we have compiled a corpus with fifty headlines taken from Spanish written press where the new bill is discussed. Data have been interpreted in the light of the discursive paradigm using, hence, a qualitative methodology. The pragmatic analysis carried out and the discussion of the results evince that right-wing press is antiabortionist while left-wing newspapers defend the organic bill 2/2010 about sexual and reproductive health, and the voluntary interruption of pregnancy. Thus, we may conclude that in Spain, conservative press adheres to current government's abortion policies, while liberal press is against these measures.
