  • Smugglers who cheat migrants: rule or exception

Abstract: This article, based on a qualitative methodolog y that includes in-depth interviews with 90 migrant smugglers, 20 procurers and 60 immigrants from Central America, examines the smugglers who cheat migrants. The results of this research indicate that many migrant smugglers only have the purpose to rob, kidnap or abandon migrants;that sex trafficking networks, which operate with some degree of deception, are growing ; and that more and more migrant smugglers leave this industry, voluntarily or involuntarily, to join drug cartels. However, the main conclusion from the discourse of the interviewees is that there are more smugglers who lead migrants safe and sound to the United States than those who attack and do not care about them.
  • Mobile communication technologies and ontological security

    • Abstract: Abstract: This paper analyzes the relationship between everyday life and the mass use of mobile communication technologies, especially smartphones. From a methodological point of view, qualitative research was used in order to grasp the meanings people give to the use of such technologies. Data were gathered through 24 focus groups and 20 in-depth interviews with youths aged between 16 and 25 years of age in Santiago de Chile between 2014 and 2015. Results show that the people’s uses of mobile communication systems would be creating changes in the daily experience of time and space, and in the way in which they give stability, structure and meaning to the intersubjective world. The article concludes that the concept of ubiquitous everyday life, or hyper everyday life, may explain the meaning of the current transformations.
  • Phases of Kirchnerism: from rupture to particularistc assertion

This paper analyzes Kirchnerism as a populist political process. Using specific literature, it is possible to reconstruct the change in the political and social alliances of the government, marked by the conflict with the agricultural fraction of the bloc in power in 2008.This conflict caused a change in the emphasis on the political strategy of the government, which modified its discourse and alliances. On this basis, the article proposes a periodization of the process in two stages, changing from the populist rupture to a particularistic affirmation of the Kirchnerist identity. The article shows in detail the new features of the political order after 2008.
  • Citizen Journalism. Analysis of opinions of journalists from Spain, Italy
           and Belgium

Abstract: One of the most significant changes in journalism over the last decade has been the participation of citizens in the information process, establishing various forms of interaction with professional journalists and the media. This development has established a new journalistic culture based on dynamic interaction with the audience that improved information processes in various ways. However, this active role of the audience can not substantiate the so called citizen journalism, because it lacks the necessary conditions to ensure quality information that secures constructive and civilized public debate.
  • Journalistic infotainment in election coverage. The case of presidential

Abstract: Journalistic coverage of elections is increasingly about conflict, scandals, horse race coverage and gaffes, a phenomenon called infotainment, which is detrimental to the political content of elections, this is to say, the candidates’ proposals and leader profiles. To assess the scope of these tendencies in the Mexican press, we focused our research on the coverage of presidential debates in the 2012 campaign, events with profuse political content, and undertook a content analysis of five national newspapers to measure frames related to infotainment (N=209 units). We found that the coverage was focused on the conflict between actors and performance assessment of the event, with little reference to the candidates’ political positions and profiles.Such treatment is detrimental to the potential of civic formation of the debates, a significant feature of democracy.
  • Peruvians in Cordoba: migration, garment workshops and community

Abstract: Based on the findings of an ethnographic research, this paper proposes to analyze the labor trajectories in “informal” garment workshops of Peruvian migrants who live in territories of urban relegation of Cordoba (Argentina), regarding their strategies to access the city and family reproduction. Moreover, it explores the community practices, as resources of local organization intended for self-management, mobilized in neighborhoods in connection with the development of garment workshops. This study shows how some processes that exceed migration itself —such as presence/absence (selective) of the State in urban spaces, informal labor networks and difficulties to access housing— are related to mobility and labor insertions, making it possible and stimulating the existence and proliferation of informal garment workshops in specific places of the city.
  • Framing climate change in Chile: discourse analysis in digital media

Abstract: This article presents a discourse analysis of four digital media press in Chile with regard to mitigation and adaptation to climate change. The research, unprecedented for the Chilean case, is aimed at acknowledging the news framings by means of which climate change is communicated, since the media are the main source of information on climate change for decision makers and citizens. The results show that the primary definers of the topic are the governmental actors of national level and the invisibilization of individuals and civil organizations in the process. Thus, we see a high degree of consensus between the visible actors with regard to the framing of economic opportunity and the absence of framings of critical ecolog y. The conclusions point that this imbalance might influence a design of public policies with a technocratic bias, losing the possibility of building an integral vision of the development of the country.
  • Media literacy and advertising discourse in three schools in Guayaquil

Abstract: The advent of new technologies in everyday life has brought about a major shift in determining both the relationships between subjects, and the ways in which reality is interpreted and understood. Therefore, media literacy is posed today as an indispensable discipline in educational systems worldwide. This article presents the results of an experiment with high-school students. The aim of the experiment is to see to what extent media literacy can be useful to enhance the interpretative competence of students. The sample consists of students of 14-15 years of age, studying the Tenth course in three schools of Guayaquil. The independent variable comprised five advertisements. The results highlight the fact that, regardless of the socioeconomic context, students who were media literate showed a higher decoding and interpretative capability than those who were not.
  • The economic contribution of women in Chilean households

Abstract: Based on the information provided by the National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey for 1990 and 2013, carried out by the Ministry of Social Development, the demographic changes of the sources and breadwinners in the household as well as the impact that a set of variables on women’s economic contribution to the household would have are analyzed by means of Binomial Logistic Regression Models. The importance of the economic contribution of women to the household is observed, especially when it is obtained in remunerated work in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups and at female-headed households. Meanwhile, the State subsidiarity stops having woman as the only reference.
