  • Editor's Introduction
    • Abstract: On 16 September 1991 the Philippine Senate voted against a proposed treaty to extend the presence of United States military bases in the Philippines. To observers the rejection of the treaty was unexpected, even contemptuous of the US, the lone superpower at the end of the Cold War. How did the unthinkable happen' In his professorial address, based on his keynote address at a conference organized by this journal to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the historic Senate vote, Roland G. Simbulan narrates the convergence of predisposing factors: the prohibition against nuclear weapons in the 1987 Constitution, the hubris of the US as manifested in the undiplomatic ways of its negotiating team, the US ... • The Historic Senate Vote of 16 September 1991: Looking Back and Looking
           Forward Twenty-Five Years After
    • Abstract: If what happened on 16 September 1991 was a victorious battle, we should be celebrating it as an official national holiday. But why don't we' And why is our nation not officially celebrating the Battle of Mactan and the victory at Balangiga as triumphs to inspire our continuing struggle for the defense of national sovereignty' All the more significant is the fact that the historic Senate vote on 16 September 1991 was a battle won without a single shot being fired, yet there is no official celebration of this event at all.I welcome this conference for serving as an occasion for academics and historians to look back at those momentous and historic events that took place on 16 September 1991, twenty-five years ago to ... • Facebook and the Intricacies of Migrant Self-Making among Ilonggo OFWs in
           South Korea
    • Abstract: When I did fieldwork among Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong from 2007 to 2008, communication between migrants and their families in the Philippines occurred mainly through overseas calls or text messages (SMS) by way of mobile phones. Only one of my research participants then was familiar with email. The proliferation of smartphones in the last few years and the rise of social media have clearly altered the digital communication landscape, creating unprecedented communicative opportunities. The emergence of a plethora of internet- and smartphone-based platforms has not only expedited and brought down the cost of communication but also created "new conditions of possibility" (Pertierra 2010, 6). It is said ... Read More

  • Aljamiado Hispanofilipino: The Spanish Language in Philippine Jawi Script
    • Abstract: From the fourteenth century onwards, the Arabic alphabet plus some additional letters shaped one of the most important cultural tools in Islamized Southeast Asia—the Jawi script. Javanese, Malay, and other languages in the region were written using this script, creating a significant volume of epigraphic, historical, and literary materials. The Jawi script connected Southeast Asia with the wider Islamic civilization, the Abode of Islam or Dār al-Islām. Locally Jawi replicated a phenomenon that had occurred elsewhere when Islamized cultures adopted the Arabic script to write their own languages. In the same manner, the Moros adopted the Jawi script in writing their languages, mainly Tausug and Maguindanao. When the ... Read More

  • Patterns of Filipino Migration to Guam: United States Military Colonialism
           and its Aftermath
    • Abstract: The largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islands and the largest island in Micronesia, Guam is known in Philippine history as apart of the Islas Ladrones that Magellanen countered on his crossing of the Pacific in 1521. It is also the place where Pedro Calungsod, the lay missionary companion of the Jesuit Diego de San Vitores, was martyred in 1672 (Schumacher 2001a, b). Once Spain's grip on the islands was consolidated with the help of Filipino soldiers, men and women from the Philippines (and later Mexico) moved or were brought to Guam to repopulate and work in the island, with most of the men intermarrying with indigenous Chamorro women. Indeed, numerous prehistoric and historical ties link the Philippines and ... Read More

  • Cyclones & Earthquakes: The Jesuits, Prediction, Trade, & Spanish Dominion
in Cuba & the Philippines, 1850–1898 by Aitor Anduaga (review)
    • Abstract: Possessing a command of both social and physical science research, Aitor Anduaga writes about the history of meteorology and seismology, institutional scientific networks, and scientific ideologies and discourses in the second half of the nineteenth century, an important period in Spanish contemporary history. Evident in his works, namely, Geofísica, Economía y Sociedad en la España Contemporánea (CSIC Press, 2009), Meteorología, Ideología y Sociedad en la España Contemporánea (CSIC and AEMET, 2012), and Geophysics, Realism and Industry: How Commercial Interests Shaped Geophysical Conceptions, 1900–1960 (Oxford University Press, 2016), are the correlations between scientific development and the greater social and ... • The End of National Cinema: Filipino Film at the Turn of the Century by
           Patrick F. Campos (review)
    • Abstract: If there is one thing to be gleaned from this voluminous book, it is that Patrick Campos is passionate about Philippine cinema. This passion is perhaps what drove him to deconstruct it so that we can appreciate it with newer lenses. There are a number of reasons why The End of National Cinema: Filipino Film at the Turn of the Century differs from other works in the field of Philippine film criticism. First, unlike other film scholars, Campos does not frame his analysis strictly within a socio-realist tradition, the art versus commercialism debates, or nativist and indigenization perspectives. His work is influenced by various theoretical approaches ranging from political economy to spatial analysis, from geopolitics ... Read More

  • Liberalism and the Postcolony: Thinking the State in 20th-Century
Philippines by Lisandro E. Claudio (review)
    • Abstract: In his first book, Taming People's Power: The EDSA Revolutions and their Contradictions (Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2013), Lisandro Claudio examines different interpretations of the People Power Revolution to understand how their competing narratives influence contemporary Philippine politics. He concludes by criticizing both mainstream ideologies, which occlude the role of the left, and the communist movement, which often "instrumentalizes" the people. Disillusioned by both, Claudio seeks solutions to Philippine problems elsewhere. In Liberalism and the Postcolony, he proposes one such solution by exploring the political praxis of liberalism in twentieth-century Philippine history. As such, this book has ... Read More

  • Dance and Other Slippages: Critical Narratives on Women, Dance, and Art by
           Rina Angela P. Corpus (review)
    • Abstract: The literature on Philippine dance by Filipino writers is so scanty that every published contribution is considered valuable. Rina Angela P. Corpus's Dance and Other Slippages, however, begs to move outside that category of "just-another-valuable-contribution" toward being a piece of substantial scholarship that could pave the way for a shift in perspectives in Philippine dance studies.Corpus was a volunteer and meditation teacher at the Brahma Kumaris Center for Spiritual Learning in Tagaytay City. In that tranquil city south of Manila she finalized her two books on dance, Defiant Daughters of Dancing (University of Hawai'i Press, 2017) and Dance and Other Slippages—the former, based on her master's thesis; the ... • The Neo Abu Sayyaf: Criminality in the Sulu Archipelago of the Republic of
the Philippines by Bob East (review)
    • Abstract: Bob East is an independent researcher with a PhD in International Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. His previous works on the topic of criminality and the Abu Sayyaf include Terror Truncated: The Decline of the Abu Sayyaf from the Crucial Year 2002 (2013) and 472 Days Captive of the Abu Sayyaf: The Survival of the Australian Warren Rodwell (2015).The question of whether fundamentalism can be used as an ideological smokescreen—purported end justifying means—for acts such as kidnapping, bombings, extortion, and murder has long been a subject of intense scholarly debate, more so in the case of scholars of conflict in the southern Philippines. • Passionate Revolutions: The Media and the Rise and Fall of the Marcos
           Regime by Talitha Espiritu (review)
    • Abstract: The emergence of leaders like Rodrigo Duterte and Donald Trump has strengthened the notion that the age of populism or "irrational politics" is upon us. Astonishment, anxiety, or disgust over the supposed predominance of emotion over "reasoned" politics has characterized discourses in mainstream and social media. Notwithstanding its focus on the Marcos era (1965–1986), Talitha Espiritu's book, Passionate Revolutions: The Media and the Rise and Fall of the Marcos Regime, has much to contribute to the ongoing debates on the nature of democracy, populism, and authoritarianism in the contemporary Philippines. As a Philippine-born Filipino American scholar whose family was closely tied to but eventually had a falling ... Read More

He used to be a lecturer both at the Department of History and the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature of the said university. At present, he is the director of Abung na Panagbasay Pangasinan (House of Pangasinan Studies), an independent research center promoting Pangasinan studies. • Elites and Ilustrados in Philippine Culture by Caroline S. Hau (review)
    • Abstract: The 2016 presidential election brought back the spotlight on an age-old quandary that has inundated the Philippines: the social and political predominance of the elite in a destitute country. Throughout the election period, politicians roused the Filipinos' imagination of the elite, as some were vilified while others disassociated themselves from this privileged segment of society. As candidates tried to establish themselves as representatives of the masses, the term "elite" became increasingly conflated with the opulence of rich businessmen, the extravagance of socialites, and even the detachment of middle-class intellectuals from impoverished Filipinos, who end up victims of their economic and intellectual ... • Weaving Cultures: The Invention of Colonial Art and Culture in the
Philippines, 1565–1850 by René B. Javellana (review)
    • Abstract: The dedication page of Weaving Cultures: The Invention of Colonial Art and Culture in the Philippines, 1565–1850 adumbrates its content, as the author cites the varied provenance and affiliation of family members and friends, "Filipinos all." They represent the flesh and blood of Philippine colonial history, engendering mestizaje (denoting miscegenation and cultural hybridity). René B. Javellana addresses the central question of Philippine cultural identity, tracing its development to a mesh of encounters that, with Spanish colonialism, thickened as well as expanded to the Americas and Europe, veritably constituting an early stage of globalization. Broadly, this monograph resonates with the core ideas of Nick ... Read More

  • Interrogations in Philippine Cultural History: The Ateneo de Manila
Lectures by Resil B. Mojares (review)
    • Abstract: In 2013 the Ateneo de Manila University bestowed upon Resil B. Mojares the prestigious Tanglaw ng Lahi award, which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to Filipinism and Filipino identity.
