I have lost count how many times I've seen or read a news story or watched a program and thought "this is perfect for- "Such and such a topic, an example of 'whatever' concept- etc, etc, and "I should show this to my Society and Culture class". Or gone into school raving to colleagues about some documentary/ film/article and then proceeded to show and tell a torn out page of a magazine, emailed them a link to a webpage or some other attempt at spreading it around the department and the students of their classes.

    • Abstract: Kalinic, Christina
The activity below can be used as an introduction to the nature of 'adolesence' as a social construct within the topic Personal and Social Identity. Discussion could also take place to examine other ideas within the topic such as a recap of the development of identity and the social self and the influence of media on the development of personal and social identity. Students analyse the lyrics in relation to course concepts (see table over page). As an extension to this activity, students could then select another song to analyse that has meaning to them individually.

Standing before you all tonight right now is truly a surreal experience for me. Last year, I would never have even dreamt of doing so, instead, I was continuously working, researching and collating information for my Society and Culture project, wondering when it would be finally done so I could be free. I am sure that all the award recipients would have had the same feeling but looking back I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore my identity as well as my cultural roots. Being of Persian decent and growing up in a Baha'i family, I have always possessed a strong sense of self as well as an underlying fascination for the culture of my ancestors, having never journeyed to Iran.

According to Chartrand and Bergh (1999), conformity takes place when people adjust their behavior or thinking to coincide with a 'group standard.' Specifically, conformity manifests itself as a direct result of an individual's willingness to accept others' opinions about reality. The degree to which people conform in any given situation is dependent upon a number of common factors.

  • Volume 106 Cross-generational study of the processes of socialisation
    • Abstract: Francis, Tamara
Socialisation is the process whereby individuals learn how to behave within and be productive members of their society. Through agents of socialisation, the socialisation process encourages internalisation of the appropriate behaviours, values, expectations and rules of an individual's cultural and social world (Donnelly et al., 2008). Consequently, socialisation is the method through which individuals learn to function effectively within their particular society, allowing them to gain the foundations for the development of an enduring personal and social identity. Though socialisation is a continuous process, in Western societies it usually reaches its influential peak during adolescence, a period characterised by the search for identity and belonging (Ballantine and Roberts, 2009). Accordingly, Eric Erikson's psychosocial theory of personal and social development places emphasis on the importance of adolescence in the construction of a secure identity; and the development of a distinct social role; which then guides an individual's future participation in society. During adolescence, individuals often look for appropriate role models to guide behaviour and identity development, and it is a period where various agents of socialisation can have a significant and enduring (Duchesne, McMaugh, Bochner and Krause, 2013; Howitt and Julian, 2009). Present within the micro, meso and macro levels of an individual's social world, agents of socialisation are processes through which social and cultural norms and roles are transmitted. Micro-level agents include family, peer groups; meso-level agents include education, culture, religion, and media; and macro-level agents include national or global institutions (Ballantine and Roberts, 2009).

  • Volume 106 Understanding the nature of social and cultural continuity and
           change
    • Abstract: Smith, Keith
In the Core topic we are required to explore the nature of continuity and change. The syllabus states:

The focus of this study is to understand the nature of social and cultural continuity and change and to examine it, through the application of research methods and social theory, in relation to a selected country.

In other words our task as teachers is to introduce differing ideas to explain change (and continuity). This is an excellent opportunity to build on our work in Year 11 and apply the social theories in a more sophisticated way. These are some theorists, ideas and strategies I have used in class.

  • Volume 98 Belief systems - Islam
    • Abstract: Baker, Steve
As Islamic states from the Gulf to South East Asia have become more developed, they have each faced a key challenge: how to build a competitive economy that stays true to the Islamic beliefs of their citizens' How have combined the strict code of Shariah practices with the one-size-fits-all model of globalisation, of which Margaret Thatcher famously proclaimed "there is no alternative." The combination of a 1400 year old set of business guidelines with the cutthroat world of modern finance seems at odds, if not absurd. However, many Muslim states, motivated by the dual desires of religious piety and business zeal, have created a pragmatic economic system that satisfies both motives. Not only have they been largely successful in achieving their aims, but they have outdone the Western economic model in many regards. By regulating their markets according to Shariah law and Islamic tradition, they proved more stable and equitable than the Western economies that were barely regulated at all.

  • Volume 98 Continuity and change in rural Japan - a case study of a rural
           Japanese family in Kyotango
    • Abstract: Mizoshiri, Sally
The concept or image of inaka (countryside) is one which invokes nostalgia amongst most Japanese people. Even though most Japanese today live in urban centres, most people have a furusato (hometown) which they belong to for life even if they reside in an urban area. The identity of Japanese people is also intrinsically connected to the countryside through their belief systems and religion. The Shinto religion is linked to nature and so are certain aspects of Buddhism. There is a saying in Japanese shizen to jibun no ittaika (unity with nature) which illustrates the connection of identity to nature.
