  • TRABALHO: NOVOS E VELHOS CONTEXTOS

    •
  • IN THE WINGS OF THE CAPITAL: EMBRAER, financialization and implications
           about the workers

The object of analysis in this article is the process of increasing financialization in the leading aeronautics company in Brazil, Brazilian Aeronautics Company S.A, (nowadays, only called EMBRAER S.A), and the impact on their direct and indirect workers. EMBRAER is the third biggest manufacturer of commercial airplanes in the world; thus, the level of competition makes the company privilege hegemonic organizational trends of global level. This investigation, centered on content analysis from official documents and scientific research published until then, verified four main moments of interconnections between productive capital and fictitious capital since its privatization in 1994, until 2012 when the research was finished. Thus, four moments come to light: 1) the 1990s, when the company was privatized; 2) in a determinant way, the beginning of the 2000’s with the manufacture of commercial airplanes EMBRAER 170/190; 3) the posterior pulverization of capital in 2006; and, finally, 4) the change of the corporate name for the purpose of expanding the areas of activity of the company in 2010. The context of such changes is that of the globalization of capital and the predominance of fictitious accumulation of capital with strong impacts in the intensification of workforce use.

  • THE QUALIFIED-SPECIALIZED FACE OF IMMIGRANT LABOR IN BRAZIL: temporality
           and flexibility

The object of this article is the qualified-specialized characteristic of immigrant work related to the legalized circuit of immigration. The references and the different theoretical backgrounds are evaluated highlighting the relevance of the “global market for qualified human resources”. The manifestation of these fluxes in Brazil (2007-2014) is analyzed based on the statistics of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labor and Employment about the visa regime, the composition of gender and nationality. A section is dedicated to “global maritimes”, and Cuban doctors, because they represent an emblematic case in the new sociohistorical bases of development of the immigration phenomenon in the country. Finally, a balance will be made about the link between these issues and the movements of labor precariousness, in particular those regarding temporality and flexibility.L’objet de cet article est la face qualifiée du travail immigré, lié au circuit d’immigration légalisé.

  • THE WORK IN THE CLOTHING INDUSTRY IN SÃO PAULO: the new forms of
           precariousness

This article analysis the work in the clothing sector based on a research made in the city of São Paulo. • RECUPERATED FACTORIES BY WORKERS: the dilemmas of collective management of
           work

This article aims to analyze the dilemmas of the collective management in factories recuperated by workers in Brazil organized mostly in the 1990s. These factories were structured either as cooperatives or as hybrid forms of management, in a context of economic restructuring and of rising unemployment, in order to keep jobs. Generally, they had the support of labor unions, and progressively became part of the Solidarity Economy movement, which was institutionalized in the following decade. 20 years after the advent of the first projects of this kind, we sought not only to verify how they remained in the market and how they adapted to the political-economic changes of the period, but also to analyze their relation to the original proposals of self-management. This article has a longitudinal scope, seeking to study factories analyzed previously (in the late 1990s), which remained in activity. In addition, interviews with leaders and workers of the projects were made, as well as with leaders of support institutions such as ANTEAG and UNISOL Brazil.

  • ABOUT THE DIVERSITY OF FORMATS AND SOCIAL ACTORS IN THE FIELD OF
           SOLIDARITY ECONOMY

This article presents a comprehension of solidarity economic projects from the multiform reality of solidarity economy in Brazil. This article is a varied set of initiatives still seeking institutional identity and a proper legal framework, since they do not fit into traditional cooperativism or the so-called third sector. Using a set of studies conducted both in terms of conceptualization and of typological formulation such as ethnographic design, this study discusses the plural configuration of solidarity projects, analyzing different social actors in focus, such as urban, rural and traditional environments. It tries to demonstrate the cultural and symbolic diversity that exist, as well as its multiple origins and current challenges, as an example of the search for a specific legal milestone for the field.L’article présente une compréhension des entreprises économiques solidaires à partir de la réalité multiforme de l’économie solidaire au Brésil.

  • DEATH FROM OVERWORK

This paper aims to analyze death from overwork, describing and analyzing work conditions in the sugarcane sector in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP). We seek to trace a relationship between overwork and the requirement of production targets, and working conditions analogous to slavery. It is also presented the hypothesis that the occurrence of deaths of workers from overwork is due to poor working conditions combined with high performance exigencies. The methodological procedures consist of the analysis of death certificates of eight workers, and the causae mortis of twenty dead workers while working at cane cutting. The declared causes, such as cardiac arrest, pancreatitis, hemorrhagic stroke, myocardial infarction, unknown cases, among others, are investigated. Interviews were made with relatives (father, mother, wife or widow, siblings) in order to determine the health condition of the workers before they started working in cane cutting. Based on this methodology, the results obtained permit us to maintain the hypothesis that death from overwork is also present at the sugarcane sector.L’objet de cet article est la mort par épuisement au travail.

  • REVISITING THE EFFECTS OF PLACE: segregation and access to labor market in
           a Brazilian metropolis

This article proposes to discuss the so-called “territory effect” comprehended as the benefits or losses that affect some social groups in consequence of its localization in the urban space. In order to do so, it is analyzed how the place of residence interferes with the access and the incorporation in the labor market based on a research made in the third largest Brazilian capital, the city of Salvador. Firstly, this article directs itself to the previous literature about this phenomenon and, then, to the current discussions about the adverse impacts of segregation. It is also presented the specificities of the city of Salvador from the point of view of the occupation and the differentiation of its territory and of its occupational conditions. Finally, based on RAIS and Censo 2010 special tabulations properly spatialized, this study emphasizes how the “territory effect” operates adversely to the population that is concentrated in the poor periphery, more distant and less occupied, in addition to other factors. This fact also contributes to the occupational vulnerability of their residents and to the reproduction of social inequalities.

  • WHAT DO PROPERTY OCCUPATIONS IN CENTRAL AREAS MEAN'

Taking as an empirical reference the housing movement of the São Paulo downtown, the objective of this article is to analyze the meaning of occupations of unoccupied real estate promoted by actors of this movement in the central area of the city. We try to demonstrate that the role of the social movements as actors who place themselves in the position of challengers of ideas, discourses and hegemonic values in society. By the speech of the activists engaged in this mobilization, it is also discussed how the right of living in downtown became a political agenda gradually built by popular sectors. The method of the study is predominantly qualitative, as it consisted in theoretical review, data collection of documents, journalistic material, and interviews with activists. As a conclusion, we suggest that the main meaning of occupations in the central areas consist in the questioning of the hegemonic model of urbanization in Brazilian society, which historically moved the poorer strata toward the peripheries of the cities.

  • BUSINESS RITES IN THE RELATION WITH RURAL COMUNITIES IN THE AMAZON REGION
           OF MARANHÃO

This article presents two forms of action taken by representatives of large corporations with communities in the interior of the Maranhão state, in the Northeastern region of Brazil. We seek to demonstrate, through the concept of business rites, how large companies, in their relationship with rural communities, strategically develop these rites. The methodological procedure adopted is qualitative focused on descriptive and explanatory analysis. Semi-structured interviews with representatives from the communities and the companies were performed, as well as the analysis of official documents of open access and internal documents, which were granted access for this research. As a main contribution, we hold that large companies develop the capacity to interfere directly in the evaluation made by the community. It starts from the moment the companies select the representatives, who have experiences related to causes sustained by their antagonists, in this case, the social movements in the rural area; or when they transform the financial investments into positive references for their action in the communities.

  • USES OF A CITY OF LIBERTY: african students in the city of

This study analyzes the presence of foreigner students in the city of Redenção, state of Ceará, Brazil. The objective of this study is to understand the resignifications that Guineans produce of the urban space. This study aims to dialogue with researches made about the ongoing African diaspora in Brazil. In these studies, the emphasis in national identities recreated by dislocated individuals is highlighted. However, it is observed an under valorization of the spatial conditions when interpreting the location of these individuals in the “land of the other”. We argue that the foreign uses occur at a moment when Redenção experiments the growth of an imaginary of a city of liberty because it was the first urban nucleus to free slaves at the end of the nineteenth century. After the installation of the University for International Integration of the Afro-Brazilian Lusophony in 2010, the new spatial milestone of this topography of liberty, the city began to appropriate symbols that compound a mosaic of contrasting historical temporalities.
