  • A Fairy Legend, a Friendship, a Painting: Thomas Crofton Croker, James
McDaniel, and Daniel Macdonald’s Sídhe Gaoithe/The Fairy Blast
    • Abstract: Daniel Macdonald (1820–53), Sídhe Gaoithe/The Fairy Blast (1842), oil on canvas, 35 x 45.3 in (89 x 115 cm), National Folklore Collection, University College Dublin. The Cork artist Daniel Macdonald (1820–53) was preeminently a painter of national character, arguably the artist of the vernacular in his time.1 His characters play music, dance, court, and marry; they make poitín and get drunk; they go to school and to Mass; they pray to God and fear the fairies; they fight, die, and are waked and buried. He painted the beautiful and winsome; the strutting and cowering; the ridiculous and devil-may-care; musicians and actors; fools and lunatics; undertakers and stonemasons; laborers, farmers, and ... • Frank Roney and the Fenians: A Reappraisal of Irish Republicanism in 1860s
           Belfast and Ulster
    • Abstract: Did you ever hear that proverb, “There are none so blind as they who do not wish to see?” This essay is a preliminary reassessment of the Fenian movement in Ulster, especially in Belfast and its hinterland, during the 1860s. It is based largely on contemporary published sources, with Frank Roney’s neglected memoir, which inspired the inquiry, as a central focus. One key contention is that certain claims in Roney’s memoir—for example, about the numerical strength, military efficacy, and denominational composition of northern Fenian circles—which have caused many historians to dismiss it as exaggerated or unreliable, are corroborated by other contemporary printed sources, some of which are well known ... • World War I and the Legacy of the Dublin Lockout, 1914–16
    • Abstract: Although the employers’ chief William Martin Murphy concluded that militant labor had “met its Waterloo” over the winter of 1913–14,1 subsequent events did not support this analysis. Truthfully, the Lockout was more akin to the indecisive Battle of Borodino—with the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU) stunned rather than defeated—even if misplaced confidence induced Murphy and other vindictive employers to impose a Carthaginian peace. International events, however, confounded this strategy, for as World War I progressed, labor shortages and other factors gradually propelled the union into an advantageous position. Nevertheless, in the interim between the Lockout and the 1916 Rising ... Read More

  • Maeve’s Legacy: Constance Markievicz, Eva Gore-Booth, and the Easter
           Rising
    • Abstract: In spring 1916 as Dublin suffered the British empire’s stern reprisals for an insurgent movement she had helped to lead, Countess Constance Markievicz waited with uncharacteristic passivity in her Kilmainham Gaol cell. The Easter Rising had failed, and with Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, Michael Mallin, and other republican leaders, she had surrendered to the British authorities. Her sister Eva Gore-Booth traveled to Ireland from England and brought Markievicz news of Dublin’s plight as well as of the fates of her comrades. By the end of the spring Markievicz had listened to gunshots that signaled the deaths of insurgent leaders; her own sentence was commuted to life in prison “for the sole reason of her ... Read More

  • Padraic Colum: Patriot Propagandist for the Poets’ Revolution
    • Abstract: Shortly after Patrick Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside Dublin’s General Post Office on Easter Monday, 1916, his fellow revolutionary Joseph Plunkett sent seven men across the street to the Atlantic Wireless School of Telegraphy, from which they broadcast to the world that the Irish Republic had been declared.1 Meanwhile, members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood seized the telegraph office on Valencia Island off the southwest coast of Ireland and dispatched a message in code to John Devoy and his fellow Clan na Gael leaders in America: “Tom successfully operated today.”2 With these actions the leaders of the Easter Rising demonstrated that they understood that their insurrection ... • Review Essay: The Material and Performative Culture of 1916
    • Abstract: The centenary of the 1916 Rising has seen a plethora of books, performances, exhibitions, conferences, concerts, parades, websites, and many other events and products to mark the occasion. A welcome development has been new scholarship on the material and performative culture of the period. Because of the availability of new archival sources, it is possible to track all kinds of themes, environments, behaviors, locations, and objects in a way that could not be done before now. For example, if you search for the term “biscuits” on the website of the Bureau of Military History, you will find 104 results, ranging from the biscuit-gorging of the 1916 garrison in Jacob’s Biscuit Factory to the lice-ridden ... • Masculinity and Nationhood in the East Clare By-Election, 1917
    • Abstract: Eamon de Valera won his first electoral victory in East Clare in July 1917. With the wave of executions that followed the Rising, the future taoiseach had already become, almost by default, one of the highest-ranking survivors of Easter 1916. Found guilty of treason, de Valera spent just over a year in various prisons before being released as part of an amnesty in June 1917. His release roughly coincided with the death on 7 June of Willie Redmond, an officer in the Royal Irish Regiment, the brother of John Redmond and the sitting MP for East Clare. The major’s death provided a welcome political opportunity for the reemergent Sinn Féin. With a suspiciously convenient dramatic flair, Robert Brennan, who would ... Read More

  • Divided Loyalties: Irish American Women Labor Leaders and the Irish
           Revolution, 1916–23
    • Abstract: The centennial celebrations of the Easter Rebellion in the spring of 2016 brought refreshing new light to a range of historical issues, including the role of women in the fighting and the significance of Irish American fraternal and nationalist organizations in funding both the Rising and the subsequent Irish War for Independence.1 Yet unsurprisingly, one theme remained largely neglected: the efforts of Irish rebels and their U.S. supporters to court Irish American labor leaders and to align both the American Federation of Labor and the more radical Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) behind the Irish Revolution. Although such efforts may seem quixotic in today’s hostile labor environment, in the early ... Read More

  • “Decorticated” Brains and “Steriliz[ed]” Minds: Samuel Beckett and
           Irish Censorship
    • Abstract: Divided into two sections, Samuel Beckett’s 1951/551 novel Molloy traces the inner lives and actions of two figures: its crippled, eponymous protagonist as he tries to locate his mother, and Jacques Moran, a policeman tasked with apprehending Molloy. The connection between these figures has long mystified scholars. What is the nature of the relationship between Molloy and Moran? Are they distinct characters, as a literal reading of the text suggests? Or are they two manifestations of the same person, one suffering from (among other conditions) schizophrenia?2 Whereas Matthew Feldman is surely correct in asserting that “there is no single key capable of unlocking Molloy . . . using psychological (or any ... • Punishing the Lyric: Seamus Heaney and the Poetics of a Communal Europe
    • Abstract: In 2009, on the heels of the world recession that ravaged the European Union’s economy, an article in the Guardian posed a peculiar question: “Will the future of Europe be decided by the voice of a poet?” (Ash). The piece highlights Seamus Heaney’s “Beacons at Bealtaine,” an occasional poem written for the European Enlargement Ceremony in 2004; it depicts a Europe where “new meanings flare . . . / From middle sea to north sea, shining clear” (“Beacons” 94). When Heaney again read the poem in 2009—this time in a video made to endorse the controversial Treaty of Lisbon—Europe was in crisis. At an economically, socially, and even culturally precarious moment the Treaty of Lisbon proposed greater power ... Read More

  • “The Totality of Relationships”: The Haughey-Thatcher Relationship and
           the Anglo-Irish Summit Meeting, 8 December 1980
    • Abstract: There is a broad consensus in the relevant literature that the summit meeting between taoiseach Charles J. Haughey and British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, held on 8 December 1980, marked a new chapter in Anglo-Irish relations. Stephen Collins, for instance, wrote that Haughey “astounded” his critics by “making a good stab at fulfilling his dream of launching a major political initiative.”1 This summit meeting, Collins argued, “heralded a genuinely important breakthrough” as it helped to pave the way for future intergovernmental dialogue between the British and Irish governments.2 Martin Mansergh has supported this claim, noting that the Anglo-Irish summit meeting of December 1980 contained a “radically ...
