  • Francisco Toledo, artista de tierra

    • Authors: Alejandra Ortiz Castañares
      Pages: 8 - 22
Abstract: The peculiarity of the art of Francisco Toledo (1940) - considered one of the greatest living Mexican artists - has consisted, since its origin, on the recover of the prehispanic culture as an aesthetic and ethical resource, in dialogue with international contemporary culture. A dialectic that is analysed throughout this text, including particularly problematic aspects of his biography, beginning from his identification with the pre Hispanic culture. It is therefore a bird's eye study, which selects certain founding characteristics of the artist and his work.

  • Leonora Carrington: El Mundo Magico de los Mayas

    • Authors: Giulia Ingarao
      Pages: 23 - 34
Abstract: El Mundo Magico de los Mayas is one of the most significant works of Leonora Carrington, who was the only foreign artist invited to decorate one of the rooms of Mexico City new National Museum of Anthropology in 1963. She was commissioned to decorate the room where artefacts coming from contemporary Maya civilization would have been displayed. The result was a multi-layered composition in which classical themes of surrealism coexisted with countless references to the Mayan culture.

  • Un poeta mapuche che scrive in spagnolo

    • Authors: Antonio Melis
      Pages: 35 - 44
Abstract: The indigenous literature revival in America has continuously increased its importance and impact to become one of the most significant phenomena of the culture of many Latinamerican countries. Besides elements in common, also deep differences emerged, linked to the different historical backgrounds and different literary traditions of the American languages. One of the key issues was the relationship established between the two languages, the indigenous and the hegemonic, especially starting from the self-translation practice commonly used to allow the reading of the texts produced in two different cultural worlds.

  • Lila Downs e il riscatto delle lingue indigene

    • Authors: Laura Veglia
      Pages: 45 - 51
Abstract: In Mexico, indigenous’ culture vitality can be shawn by its presence in ambits far from academism, as music. We can consider at this purpose Lila Dawn’s musical production: during her career she sang both original songs and others that belong to mexican popular tradition, most of them in amerindian languages. In her work, multilingualism is always present: she writes in english and spanish; moreover, her albums contain songs in indigenous mexican languages, showing the power of preservation of these cultures.

  • Lautaro en el ciber-espacio: memoria y nuevas practicas identidarias en un
           contexto Mapuche

    • Authors: Edoardo Balletta, Sofia Venturoli
      Pages: 52 - 74
Abstract: In this text we want to reflect on the complexity and creativity of the recognition and self-recognition path developed by Mapuche young generation born in the marginal urban areas of the city of Bariloche. The group, which defines themselves as mapurbe, builds its multiple identity also from the texts of the mapuche poet David Aniñir, and from the texts produced by them in the fanzine Mapurbe'zine. From these texts, as well as from other cultural practices involving music and theatre, the group negotiate and manage its own memory and culture for the construction of an urban indigenous identity.

  • Huellas del universo guaraní en la memoria escrita del paraguayo
           Augusto Roa Bastos

    • Authors: Paco Tovar Blanco
      Pages: 75 - 89
Abstract: Marcel Dominguez (1868-1936) wrote on the history of Paraguay, valuing the traces of the indigenous peoples; Eloy Fariña Núñez (1885-1929) interpreted the poetic dimensions of the Guaraní universe, composing the "Secular Canto"; The anthropologists Kurt Unkel (1883-1945), Leon Cadogan (1899-1973) and Bertomeu Meliá (1932) showed an interest in those same people, exploring their roots and ways of life. In Augusto Roa Bastos’ works, an awareness of historical order, similar poetic dimensions and human reach is once again represented. All this is done through a language where, without "alibis or civilizing betrayals", he tells the good use of myths, allowing us to read the reality, all our reality. The genesis of the Guarani (1948), Son of Man (1960), (1993) confirm Roa’s success, a writer who speaks of his Guaraní legacy, Yo el Supremo (1974) and El Fiscal handles from his writing a colonial heritage and expiate with words of a common language the memory of Miguel Vera, the records of an anonymous compiler and the notes of the outlaw Felix Moral.

Abstract: This paper aims to investigate the way in which native cultures are represented in Mario Vargas Llosa’s literary works. • Memoria antica e memoria indiana: discorso sulle divinità indigene
           nell’opera di Fray Juan Torquemada

    • Authors: Sergio Botta
      Pages: 101 - 119
Abstract: The Monarquía indiana - published in Seville in 1615 by Fray Juan de Torquemada - represented one of the most significant efforts to include Indigenous religions within a global view of religious diversity. As a product of a modern process of “mondialization”, the work of Torquemada reflected on the nature of Mesoamerican gods from a ground-breaking point of view. The Franciscan produced an evolution of the missionary methods and strategies used during the first part of colonial history. In the context of modern discourses on religion, the work of Torquemada does not represent only an "ethnographic" attempt to understand the complexity of Indigenous religions in order to promote evangelization. On the contrary, the missionary reflection on Indigenous gods established a key stage in the modern construction of a global theory of polytheism.

    • Authors: Irene Theiner
      Pages: 120 - 140
Abstract: This paper examines the strategies employed by the first Franciscans in Mexico in order to translate the elements of the world they needed to know seeking to build a new (indo)christian world. The aim is to analyze in the texts of Toribio de Benavente (1482?-1569), Diego Valadés (1533-¿?), Bernardino de Sahagún (1499-1590) and Jerónimo de Mendieta (1525-1604) their translation of the indian language.

  • La tradizione drammatico-performativa della cultura náhuatl nel teatro di
           evangelizzazione francescano

    • Authors: Sara Poledrelli
      Pages: 141 - 160
Abstract: The research follows, on one hand the evolutionary stages of evangelization theatre, on the other, traces a panorama of the different existing performative styles in pre-Hispanic times, to detect which elements of the para- dramatic indigenous rituals and protocols survived in religious theatre set up by Franciscans in the American-hispanic ground. We want to underline how the contents and the forms are the result of miscegenation and syncretism, that were folklorized after the fall of the missionary theatre, and crystallized into a popular dramatic repertoire which exhibits strong survivals of native culture, sometimes only subtly hidden under the Christian and European appearance.

  • La memoria fiorita. Scrittura, memoria e materialita’ del colore
           nell’antica Mesoamerica

    • Authors: Davide Domenici
      Pages: 161 - 180
Abstract: The paper presents a cultural-historical interpretation of the data deriving from scientific analyses carried by the mobile laboratory MOLAB (SMAArt, University of Perugia-CNR) carried out on Mesoamerican manuscripts, providing hints on pictorial techniques and on the relationships between technological traditions and linguistic, stylistic and thematic issues. Comparing different data, we will explore the emic perception of the manuscripts’ materiality, linking the use of organic dyes obtained from flowers with indigenous notions about writing, chanting, brilliance and flowers’ colour.

  • El depósito ritual. Una práctica mesoamericana de larga

    • Authors: Danièle Dehouve
      Pages: 181 - 206
Abstract: Mesoamerica is a cultural area known by the resistance of several of its features to the passage of time. One of them remained in existence in the long duration: the "ritual deposit", also named offerings, is defined as a figurative ritual, based on material and miniaturized representations, generally accompanied by the sacrifice of animals or men and / or the gift of food ; it has a great antiquity and persists in use in the indigenous contemporary populations. The article examines the evidences of this ceremonial practice, as well as its characteristics.

  • Imaginarios en el arte popular de Chiapas

    • Authors: Jesús Morales Bermúdez
      Pages: 207 - 230
Abstract: Under the guidance of intuition, in this paper I concentrate on the theme of certain imaginaries and representations in Chiapas from a rare point of view. It traverses some route of conception of the world and of the language inscribed in the craft objects, objects useful in first instance for its creators, before its decorative function or aesthetic stimulation for the consumers. This conception of the world does not exist as an explicit formulation in objects but our effort derives them from substrates of imagination, orality and literature, from which I try to draw a line, derived from myths, rites, poems. Apart from humanizing with our hands, we also humanized ourselves with the word.

    • Authors: Rosa Maria Grillo
      Pages: 231 - 253
Abstract: In the framework of the ‘gender studies’ dedicated to forgotten women in history, a prominent place is occupied by Tecuichpotzin Ichcaxochitzin (“Cotton flower, the revered daughter of the lord”)   daughter of Moctezuma II, was probably born at the end of the first decade of the sixteenth century. Baptized as Isabel de Moctezuma, she lived a life straddling two worlds and two eras: daughter and wife of kings, repudiated by Cortés, she is sometimes described as the anti Malinche, loyal to her people but perfectly integrated in the colonial system. This paper will compare different sources – historical chronicles of that time and subsequent periods, historical fiction   in order to provide a credible profile and to correctly interpret such contradictory comments and opinions.

A path is traced from the vanguards to the socio historical and political context of the  80s Peru, not to mention the innate inclination of the poet for marginal realities.

en El llamado de la especie de Sergio Chejfec

    • Authors: Daniela Alcívar Bellolio
      Pages: 294 - 319
Abstract: Space, as a narrative device, has a decisive role in Sergio Chejfec’s essays, poems, short stories and novels. This article examines the ways in which landscape as a notion, in interaction with the gaze, provides a series of narrative possibilities that put in question notions conventionally related to narration forms in El llamado de la especie. Progress, development, causality are some of the issues that end up destabilized in the story as the space becomes the central concept of this narrative work.
