  • Introduction
    • Authors: Poulos C. N.
      Pages: 213 - 214
Abstract: This special issue offers a series of takes—from scholars at various stages of their careers—on the promotion and tenure process in an environment of turmoil in higher education and the wider world. As Norman Denzin and others have pointed out, qualitative inquiry is under fire. In matters of promotion and tenure, this problem comes into sharp focus.

Abstract: When you are notified that your graduate advisor is under investigation...When you are in year one of your first tenure-track job at a prestigious university...When you learn that the investigation has elements of fraud and forgery...When you begin to question everything...When you try to sever ties but realize the graduate-doctoral advisor link is not so easily broken...When you are afraid to tell your story, but know you must not be alone...When you wonder how dark the other stories out there are...When you are brave enough to break the silence. The silence must stop.

  • At Play in the Fields of Qualitative Research and Autoethnography: A
           Strange Account
    • Authors: Rambo, C; Pruit, J. C.
      Pages: 219 - 242
Abstract: This "playful," layered performance autoethnography is a strange account of spoiled identity, gatekeeping, and the fear surrounding qualitative research and autoethnography. Based on the theoretical sensibilities of Georg Simmel and Jacques Derrida, the strange account is advanced here as a technique for writing about secrets or threatening situations. Strange accounts place readers in safe proximity to the secret while keeping the secret "in play." Strange accounts serve practical, relational, and analytical purposes by disguising or omitting information about the situation, the identities of those involved (including the authors), when and where the events took place, and its meaning, while also following a guideline of compassion and an ethic of care.

  • Promotion, Tenure, and Qualitative Research in Troubled Times: Answering a
           Moral Call
    • Authors: Kaufman J.
      Pages: 243 - 248
Abstract: After the author was told that her work would not be considered for promotion to full professor because it was too radical, too short, and needed to make rather than use theory, she fell into a depression. Mucking through this depression took two years. In the following, the author shares vignettes of this journey as well as a resistance to a call to answer. In this giving and holding, she hopes to trouble the currents of a current neoliberal desire and an ancient academic mandate to know.

  • I Mean Theres Nothing to Worry About...Until Theres Something to Worry
About: An Autoperformance of Tenure, Promotion, and Annual Review in a
           Right-to-Work State
    • Authors: Scott; J.-A.
      Pages: 249 - 257
Abstract: This autoperformance script maps the journey to tenure and promotion to full professor of a personal narrative researcher and performance artist in a supportive, affirming communication studies department in a regional state university with the Carnegie classification of "higher research activity." The writer/performer/researcher enacts an autoarchaeological analysis of annual review comments combined with autoethnographic (re)creations of collegial interactions. The script illuminates underlying tensions surrounding interpretive, creative, qualitative scholarship. The writer/performer/researcher asserts that while autoethnographic performance scholarship has gained legitimacy through the success of multiple high-profile scholars and publishing outlets, questions and vulnerabilities linked to the postpositivist biases endure and require our continued attention.

  • Gatekeepers, Grace, and Getting Tenure: A Womanist1 Wa/onders to Sing a
           Black Girls Song
    • Authors: Scott K. D.
      Pages: 258 - 262
Abstract: Pursuing a path to the academy I find the same system of privileged gatekeeping that ended my passion for journalism—"stories" are not facts and lived experiences don’t matter in a quest to change the world. In teaching I find certainty this is where I belong but publish or perish is a constant companion navigating the abyss. On my wa/onderings, grace greets me with mentors at every phase who know how to guide and provide for a womanist to tell stories of Black women’s lives. Generosity, opportunity, community, and care support my path to tenure and beyond. The stories I tell give voice, create knowledge, decolonize—and a new vision for gatekeeping affirms a Black girl’s song matters.

  • Tenure in Times of Polarized Politics and Systemic Defunding of Public
           Universities
    • Authors: Diversi M.
      Pages: 263 - 267
Abstract: The need for academic freedom continues to be just as central in today’s polarized political and ideological worlds as it was at its outset. Tenure is a system intended to offer protection against donors, state representatives, faculty, and administrators who may not understand one’s line of inquiry. Qualitative researchers have additional burdens in proving the validity of interpretive and critical paradigms. While there has been more space for such alternative paradigms in the last three decades, the organized starvation of public universities in the last decade has made the tenure trajectory particularly challenging for interpretive and critical qualitative inquiry.

  • Trouble in Paradise
    • Authors: Poulos C. N.
      Pages: 268 - 277
Abstract: Over the last 25 years or so, the academic world has experienced an explosion of new qualitative approaches to social inquiry in many fields. As scholars began to push the boundaries of what counts as knowledge, the "old guard" began to attack, apparently attempting to maintain a hold on the territory that was shifting underneath their feet. These attacks on qualitative inquiry—particularly toward the new/alternative modalities such as autoethnography and performance—have persisted, especially within the so-called social sciences. These attacks often seem to take the form of questioning the legitimacy of the methodology or methods employed in these works. In this autoethnographic essay, I take on the attacks and offer fitting responses from my personal journey.

  • The Exhaustion of Wood Buffalo National Park: Mikisew Cree First Nation
           Experiences and Perspectives
    • Authors: Vannini, P; Vannini, A.
      Pages: 278 - 303
Abstract: Wood Buffalo National Park is Canada’s largest and the world’s second largest national park. For the last half century, industrial mega projects such as BC Hydro’s W.A.C. Bennett Dam first and tar sands oil extraction later have been exhausting the "natural resources" of the park, decimating wildlife, and severing the sacred relations among Indigenous people, their ways of life, and their land. This extractivist regime has led to a point when, in 2014, the Mikisew Cree First Nation—frustrated by the Canadian government’s continued unwillingness to listen to their grievances—filed a petition to ask UNESCO to add Wood Buffalo National Park to the list of the world’s endangered World Heritage sites. In this article, we describe how such events unfolded and what the current situation signifies for environmental politics, wilderness conservation, and Indigenous relations with settler society within a colonial state.

  • Mama Taught Me: Storied Blackgirl Reflections
    • Authors: Hartley J.
      Pages: 304 - 322
Abstract: There is often a single stereotyped story told of Black single mothers and their children. By reducing these mothers and their children to stereotypes of poor, uneducated, never married, and lacking resources, their humanity is limited. To move beyond this deficit framework, I use autoethnographic methods and poetics to offer counternarratives. As a Black woman who was raised by a Black single mother, I know firsthand the importance of humanizing Black single mothers and their children.

  • Deleuze and Collaborative Writing in the Dance of Activism
    • Authors: Gale, K; Wyatt, J, Gullion, J. S, Hou, N, Jeansonne, C, Linnell, S, Reaves, M. A, Reilly, R, Rhodes, P.
      Pages: 323 - 338
Abstract: Drawing upon and infused by the ‘micropolitical’ moves of Deleuze and Guattari, this article arose out of a participative workshop at the 2018 International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry that took up Braidotti’s proposition to explore how collaborative writing ‘like breathing, [is] not held into the mould of linearity, or the confines of the printed page, but move[s] outwards, out of bounds, in webs of encounters with ideas, others, texts’ (Braidotti, 2013, p. 166). We worked with the view that collaborative writing is a political act, a ‘minor gesture’ (Manning, 2016), a world making that opens up to the new and challenges the sedimented. This is an article that engages in and with collaborative writing, that dances with ideas of what collaborative writing might be and, crucially, what it might do.
