  • Doing Justice: Introduction to the Special Issue
    • Authors: Wyatt, J; Diversi, M.
      Pages: 1 - 4
Abstract: In this article we argue that the contributions to this special issue are examples of the ‘acts of activism’ D. Soyini Madison (2010) speaks of. Such acts, though always late, are necessary and urgent as qualitative researchers seek for their work to do justice.

  • Learning Is Such Sweet Sorrow
    • Authors: Harris A. M.
      Pages: 5 - 16
Abstract: We learn by returning. To our classrooms, our publics, our bodies. This performance text returns us to these places which remain the relics of affective encounters, the sticky sites of emotional residue, historical fragments that tell us what we can bear to remember about ourselves. These histories rely on ‘the moving, the deja-felt in all of its uncanniness’, (Manning, 2013, p. 84), a now which coagulates the push and pull of memory, interiority, and external struggle in time and space or spacetime. We return by building, commemorating, protesting, and then tearing down. Research, activism, education, and love intersect in lives of engaged social action and through a sometimes-reluctant return to sites of consciousness-raising with one common aim: Let us learn.

  • Like the Moon Rising: Standing in the Brexit Dawn
    • Authors: Dunlop M.
      Pages: 17 - 26
Abstract: A personal choice taken within a specific sociopolitical context, now needs reevaluation, as the political framework shifts under the shadow of Brexit. I recall a life-changing decision made young, to move from Dublin to London for university and consequently to stay in the United Kingdom. I look back on my early experiences in London, on a sense of immersion within collectively shared European history, particularly the long shadow cast by the trauma of war. I examine my national and European identities, and how I grew to inhabit a hybrid, non-binary notion of national identity. I question my position and the effect a challenge to polarise identity has upon me and consider the value of maintaining presence as a complex, embodied self who holds a pluralistic notion of national identity as a strategy of resistance against discourses that seek to deny the existence of such subjectivities.

  • 'B for Brexit or for Belonging'
    • Authors: Georgiadou L.
      Pages: 27 - 35
Abstract: In this article, I use my personal experience of being a UK-based EU national and researcher during ‘Brexit’ as a vehicle to explore how the ‘rise of the right’ may be affecting qualitative researchers, their practice, and the context in which their inquiry takes place. In particular, I explore the shift in my sense of belonging as a result of the Brexit vote and the impact that this has on my willingness to remain in Britain and on my research practice. I conceptualise ‘belonging’ as fluid and relational, and I highlight the central role that ‘welcoming the other’ can play in facilitating such processes. This then forms the foundation of my exploration of what I think we, as qualitative researchers, can do for our communities as a response to the recent political developments discussed in this special issue.

  • "Mexican, Not Latino": A T-shirt as an Artifact of Creative Subversion
    • Authors: Puebla; C. A. C.
      Pages: 36 - 41
Abstract: In this brief piece, I introduce "state terrorism" and "accumulation by dispossession" as a framework to represent Donald Trump as a specific personification of a large group of past and current presidents who have led or actually are leading some nations in a particular way. It is formulated as a demand to study the daily life using qualitative methodologies and create new ways of producing useful knowledge to actively transform our societies. A T-shirt is depicted as an artifact of creative subversion in the context of a permanent dialogue between Mexicans and Americans on public themes such as a wall on the border.

  • Between Brexit and Trump: Looking at the Stain on the Floor
    • Authors: Murray F.
      Pages: 42 - 51
Abstract: This article asks how leaders emerge out of moments and movements of whiteness. It asks how we sit with, endure through, or protest against the new values that are created as we tumble into the interstices of this political space. This article, based on the author’s assumptions and imaginations about a postgraduate student’s silence in class discussion, explores possibilities of finding new modes of participation in class and therefore in democracy and in our globalized lives. Through thinking with Liang, a Chinese student in a university classroom in Scotland, this inquiry begins to articulate the implications of the current political landscape for the work done in the university. This article, in its original form, was presented at the European Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in Leuven, Belgium, on February 2017 and was written in the aftermath of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union.

  • Brexit: Six Days in June
    • Authors: Higgins, K. W; Wright, J. K.
      Pages: 52 - 59
Abstract: A response to Brexit from two qualitative researchers from the different disciplines of counselling and human geography use a fragmented form to examine the personal and emotional together with a critique from a more mainstream research perspective, but not necessarily a more mainstream political perspective. This collaboration across disciplines and within different approaches to inquiry aims to interrogate some of the emotions and practices of shock, rage, and resistance to the EU Referendum result.

  • From Latin America: About Illusios, the Rise of the Right, and Critical
           Qualitative Resistance
    • Authors: Chapela C.
      Pages: 60 - 69
Abstract: I present a Latin American perspective of the rise of the right in the world, how this affects the qualitative academy and Latin American universities, and the resistance possibility of hope. To further resistance, I propose we need to put together the efforts of researchers who are adherent to different methodologies, with the unifying condition that each has critical intentions and has the aim of creating communities conformed as immunitary democracies where we find ways to place our listening, knowledge, and instruments in the hands of the people.

  • Becoming a Conscientious Objector: What Would My Dad Think'
    • Authors: Price M.
      Pages: 70 - 76
Abstract: The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, ‘Brexit’, continues to create ripples of concern and seeming political paralysis. Connecting emotionally to the process of ‘conscientious objection’ of previous generations provides inspiration for accepting embarrassment, taking a personal stance, and a making a renewed commitment to trusting our future to young people, including a continued commitment to the role of fostering criticality within academia.

  • Europe in Fragments
    • Authors: Goode J.
      Pages: 77 - 84
Abstract: In this autoethnographic response to Brexit, the author tries to make sense of feelings of profound loss following the UK referendum decision to leave the European Union. In exploring questions of what it is that has been lost, who ‘we’ are, and how we might recover, she traces key strands in her family, cultural, and professional life that highlight both points of division and points of connection with others (and with those doing ‘othering’), in our increasingly polarised and fragmented world. Stories she listened to in her professional capacity, told by politicians on the one hand and by those who had long felt excluded and ‘left behind’ on the other, take on a fresh significance in light of the decision to ‘leave’. In these uncertain and insecure times, one thing seems sure: Progress lies in connecting to others, reaching out, crossing borders, holding hands, healing wounds, re-creating community.

  • Research-Creation Walking Methodologies and an Unsettling of Time
    • Authors: Springgay, S; Truman, S. E.
      Pages: 85 - 93
Abstract: This article examines two walking events that explore questions of sovereignty, borders, histories, and time through strategies of speculation, counter-cartographies, and anarchiving practices. To the Landless by Dylan Miner and Miss Canadiana’s Heritage and Cultural Walking Tour: The Grange by Camille Turner ask us to imagine a past, present, and future that are radically different from ongoing settler colonialism and White supremacy. Stepping ‘out of time’ has important implications for the kinds of research-creation events it germinates. Chronological time is so pervasive and powerful that we as qualitative researchers are often caught up in its neoliberal progress narrative. Walking with scholars and artists who refuse time’s organization and the fixing or preservation of state narratives disrupts colonial legibility and the repeated imposition of the normative order. Unsettling time becomes a model for research and education that are outside colonial, neoliberal, and dominant ideologies. To unsettle something is to open it up to possibility.

  • Responding to Brexit Through a Song: 'This Country, Professional Sport,
Seamless Boarders, and Working in Europe
    • Authors: Douglas K.
      Pages: 94 - 104
Abstract: As a European citizen I have enjoyed great freedom working and travelling across the European Union since I was in my early 20s. During this time I have made strong, lasting friendships with many people but not least in France, Sweden, and Portugal. Following the ‘Brexit’ referendum, many of these friends asked, ‘Why leave'’ ‘What is happening to the UK'’ I had no answers and also found it difficult to convey in words the mixture of sadness, disappointment, disillusion, anger, and frustration that I felt. Qualitative researchers are often drawn to arts-based methodologies when words fail us. Here, I draw on a song to help communicate a complex and emotional landscape which includes how a refugee crisis, an influx of asylum seekers, and immigration conflicts in 2015 seemed to create a groundswell of fear and contribute to a ‘leave’ vote being registered by 51.9% of those who completed the ballot form.

  • Article 50 and Beyond
    • Authors: Wyatt J.
      Pages: 105 - 107
Abstract: Written in early 2017, in the aftermath of the United Kingdom’s vote in June 2016 to leave the European Union and the election, in November of that year, of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, this brief article argues for an activist scholarly ethic. The author calls himself and the qualitative inquiry community to (re)commit to urgent political and moral intent.
