  • Continuing the Struggle
    • Authors: Sujoy Dutta
      First page: 5
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 5 - 26This paper demonstrates how, in three villages of Uttar Pradesh, poor Dalits and lower castes sustain their assertion against local power structure by adopting everyday politics. This proves that defiance under uncompromising circumstances need not be quiet, disguised and anonymous; rather, it can be noisy, public and open. The analysis from the field indicates that disadvantaged castes have not been able to bring about a broad structural transformation, as most opportunities are controlled by the local power structure. Despite this, a section of poor labourers has benefited from everyday protests. This transformation is a result of the enhanced politicisation of poor households under the political banner of the Bahujan Samaj Party, which has a strong presence in UP villages. This has not only empowered the disadvantaged castes, to confront the powerful dominant castes, but has made them politically and socially aware of their rights, helping them to reconfigure their ties with the powerful, dominant castes.

  • The Politics of Race, Nationhood and Hindu Nationalism
    • Authors: Tejaswini Patil
      First page: 27
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 27 - 54The discussion on Hindu-Muslim conflict in India has revolved around religious or ethno-nationalist explanations. Employing the Gujarat riots of 2002 as a case study, I argue that dominant (Hindu) nationalism is linked to the ideas of “race” and has its roots in Brahminical notions of Aryanism and colonial racism. The categories of “foreign, hypermasculine, terrorist Other” widely prevalent in the characterisation of the Muslim Other, are not necessarily produced due to religious differences. Instead, social and cultural cleavages propagated by Hindu nationalists have their origins in race theory that accommodates purity, lineage, classification and hierarchy as part of the democratic discourses that pervade the modern nation-state. It focuses on how the state and non-state actors create discursive silences and normalise violence against minority communities by embodying emotions of fear, hate and anger among its participants to protect Hindu nationalism.

  • Space of Deprivation
    • Authors: Sumit Chakrabarti
      First page: 55
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 55 - 72A much neglected section of the 19th Century imperial bhadrolok population during British rule in India was the Bengali clerk or the kerani. While his English education and caste identity likened him to the middle-class gentleman, his pattern of work, low salary, lack of opportunities for improvement, pushed him closer to the labour class. But was this neglected section of the “bhadrolok” always without his representational space? In this paper, I shall study examples from clerks’ memoirs and from contemporary literature and read them alongside the violently repressive The Clerk’s Manual published in 1889, to see if the clerk was secretly discovering a heterotopia of his own.

  • Qualitative Research in Public Health
    • Authors: Meerambika Mahapatro
      First page: 73
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 73 - 92Qualitative data is now increasingly used within public health research, and domestic violence widely is recognized as a serious public health problem. India is one of the most socio-economically diverse nations in the world, where language, culture and customs differ from place to place within the country. In order to carry out research on domestic violence in a multi-centre cross-cultural environment, it is imperative to pay attention to methodological issues. This paper aims to understand how domestic violence is addressed in research and identifies lessons from the methodological gaps in understanding health research. These gaps are analyzed at four levels; conceptualization, setting, ethics and cross-cultural adaptation of research instruments. The research was a multicentre study covering 18 states of India. A wide range of methods were used to narrow the methodological gaps. Despite the inherent difficulties in defining domestic violence in a cross cultural set up, the paper reflects the cumulative efforts of investigators to recognize and systematically deal with the methodological gap in addressing multi-centre research.

  • Perspectives on Women’s Menopausal Health in India
    • Authors: Vibha Tiwari; A.K. Sharma
      First page: 93
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 93 - 125With an increase in the survival rate and shift in the age composition of women, menopause is emerging as one of the major health issues in the sociology of health. Thanks to demographic transition, a sizeable number of women will now spend one-third to half of their life as post-menopausal. The present paper focuses upon the prevailing discourses on women’s menopausal health in the Indian setting. It suggests that though women’s health beliefs, behaviour and coping patterns in the Indian context differ from their Western counterparts, huge similarities are found in socio-cultural and medical discourses on menopause. In most of these discourses women are marginalised and seen as inferior to men. However, the epidemiological studies on women’s menopausal health in India suggest that menopause is a normal life event where menstruation ceases; it is not associated with the bio-psycho-social morbidity paradigm as prevalent in the West.

  • “Saved a Generation”
    • Authors: Smitha S. Nair; Rajesh Kalarivayil
      First page: 126
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 126 - 148The last three decades have witnessed campaigns in India by the women’s health movement against provider-controlled contraceptives, i.e., long-acting contraceptives, non-surgical sterilisation and anti-fertility vaccines. These campaigns are examined to understand and analyse the engagement of women’s groups with contraceptive technology in opposing the entry of these contraceptives into the Family Planning Programme (FPP) of the country. The rise of social movements challenging scientific knowledge and scientific institutions is attributed to the “scientisation” of politics; however, we argue that the politicisation of contraceptive technology and its research was the result of women’s collective action in India. The paper explores collective action strategies and intersecting frames of overpopulation, development and technology used by women’s groups to consistently oppose the provider-controlled contraceptives from entering the FPP of the country. The paper uses the internal documents of women’s organisations, media reports and personal interviews to explore the engagement of women’s collective action with contraceptive technologies.

  • The Role of Life Satisfaction on Election Voting Preferences in Malaysia
    • Authors: Jason Wei Jian Ng; Santha Vaithilingam Gary John Rangel
      First page: 149
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 149 - 175Ethnicity and urbanisation have been the most studied predictors of electoral outcomes in Malaysian general elections. In this study, we examine life satisfaction in the political science literature that can also influence Malaysian electoral outcomes. Using data from the World Values Survey conducted in Malaysia shortly before the General Election in 2013, we leverage on responses to a survey question asking respondents to indicate the political party they would vote for if a national election were held the next day, and empirically investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and voting preferences. We find that respondents with higher levels of life satisfaction will have a higher probability of voting for the ruling party, with the magnitude of this effect relatively comparable to that of the ethnic effect. We also empirically show that this outcome is due to the preference for status quo, defined on two levels, in the Malaysian political scene.

  • The Lagged Effects of Corruption Control, Business Environment and
Economic Growth on Foreign Direct Investment in the Philippines
    • Authors: Prinz P. Magtulis; Sauk-Hee Park
      First page: 176
Abstract: Source: Volume 45, Issue 1-2, pp 176 - 204Despite vast natural resources and geographic advantages in the Asia-Pacific region, foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Philippines was ranked among the lowest in the region for the past 30 years. Some challenges, including high-level public corruption, low economic development and the government’s inability to establish a good business environment, are seen to have reduced FDI. Moreover, the Philippines still remains lagging in the South East Asian region in terms of FDI despite recent developments, such as good GDP figures and the reforms put in place by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. This may imply an interval between the reforms made and their impact on FDI. Thus, this study investigates the lagged effects of the government’s anti-corruption stance, reforms undertaken to facilitate business and economic growth on FDI in the Philippines. In the process, it draws on both qualitative and quantitative data: The latter utilises an auto-regressive distributed lagged model to find possible time intervals on the impact of variables with each other, while the former provides support through a narration of historical developments, trends and explanations rooted on theoretical foundations.
