  • Traditions of Selecting Coptic Patriarchs over Two Millennia
    • Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: From the earliest days of the Coptic Orthodox Church to the 2012 election of Pope Tawadros II, the methods of selecting 118 Coptic patriarchs have been multifarious and in some aspects unique in the history of Christendom. Existing scholarship on the traditions of Coptic patriarchal selection often includes generalizations in place of rigorous statistical analysis. This study remedies the deficiency through historical and quantifiable analysis of the methods of patriarchal selection over the nearly two thousand-year history of the Coptic Orthodox Church. The following eight methods of selection were identified in order of frequency: consensus among clergy and laity, election by the presbyters of Alexandria, appointment by predecessor, election by laity acting alone, casting of lots among final nominees, governmental interference, divine appointment or vision, and election by bishops acting alone. Despite the variety of methods — and despite the social and political trials of the Copts — a democratic thrust has continued to exert itself, with the most recent patriarchal election being no exception. The study also includes critical examination of the current patriarchal election law, decreed in Egypt in 1957, which formalized casting of lots among the top three elected candidates.

Abstract: This collaborative article focuses on recent excavations in the ancient church at the Monastery of St. Shenoute — i.e. the White Monastery — in Sohag, Egypt, as part of the Yale Monastic Archaeology Project (YMAP). In it, we report on the discovery of manuscript fragments that shed light on the history of the White Monastery library, a collection that contained over 1,000 books, the largest in medieval Egypt. A large percentage of extant Coptic literature — including the writings of the monastic leader Shenoute — originally derived from that collection, and as a result the monastery has played a central role in the development of Coptic studies as a historical field. Our paper has four parts. First, we describe the archaeological context, and our methods of excavation, cataloguing, and photographic documentation. Second, we report on the data discovered, including the material and number of fragments, the languages and scripts represented, patterns of ornamentation, and text types. Third, we present a case study related to the discovery of a Coptic fragment that belongs to the Shenoutean corpus. Fourth and finally, we draw conclusions about the implications of this find for our knowledge of the textual and architectural history of the site, including the light it sheds on where manuscripts were stored in the monastery.

  • Pour une nouvelle histoire de la découverte et de l'état primitif
           du codex Bruce (1769-1794)
    • Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: This paper delves into the modern history of the Bruce Codex (Bodleian Library, Oxford, MS Bruce 96), a Coptic manuscript acquired in Egypt in the eighteenth century by Scotsman James Bruce. Very little is known of the modern history of this papyrus codex, which contains some of the first direct 'Gnostic' sources available to scholars (the so-called 'Books of Jeu' and 'Untitled Text of the Bruce Codex'). We propose that a careful examination of sources from the last decades of the eighteenth century, however limited they may be, can shed new light not only on the circumstances surrounding the discovery and the purchase of the codex, but also on the condition of the manuscript at the time of its acquisition. This paper will cover the history of the Bruce Codex from 1769, when it was allegedly purchased, to 1794, date of death of the original owner.
