  • Un-Making Sense of Alleged Abkhaz-Adyghean Inscriptions on Ancient Greek
           Pottery
    • Authors: Alexei Kassian
      First page: 177
Abstract: Source: Volume 22, Issue 2, pp 177 - 198A large number of Ancient Greek vases dated to the 1st millennium BC contain short inscriptions. Normally, these represent names of craftsmen or names and descriptions of the depicted characters and objects. The majority of inscriptions are understandable in Ancient Greek, but there is a substantial number of abracadabra words whose meaning and morphological structure remain vague. Recently an interdisciplinary team (Mayor et alii 2014) came up with the idea that some of the nonsense inscriptions associated with Amazons and Scythians are actually written in ancient Abkhaz-Adyghe languages. The idea is promising since in the first half of the 1st millennium BC the Greeks initiated the process of active expansion in the Black Sea region, so it is natural to suppose that contacts with autochthonous peoples might be reflected in Greek art. Unfortunately, detailed examination suggests that the proposed Abkhaz-Adyghe decipherment is semantically and morphologically ad hoc, containing a number of inaccuracies and errors of various kinds. The methodological and factual flaws are so substantial that it makes Mayor et alii’s results improbable.

  • Female Elite Grave in the Necropolis Luchistoe-2 (Southern Crimea)
    • Authors: Valentina I. Mordvintseva; Aleksander V. Lÿsenko Vyacheslav V. Masyakin
      First page: 199
Abstract: Source: Volume 22, Issue 2, pp 199 - 261The article is a publication of the Grave 1 excavated in the necropolis of Luchistoe-2, which is so far the only known archaeological site in Southern Crimea with burial structures of the Early Roman period. The article includes suggestions regarding the scale and date of the necropolis, as well as the funerary rite, costume and cultural connections of the society using the burial-ground. It was established that the published grave contained the burial of a woman of high social status (probably a priestess) dated from the late-1st or early-2nd century AD. Analysis of the archaeological material in conjunction with information about the location of the necropolis and data from epigraphic documents and ancient litterary tradition, leads to the conclusion that the burial-ground was located in ‘Taurica’ – the territory between the Greek polis of Chersonesos and the Bosporan kingdom. It was used by the population, which was designated in the written sources as Scytho-Taurians (Plin. NH ., IV, 85-86; Arr. PPE . 30). These peoples were bearers of the so-called Late Scythian archaeological culture and belonged to the sphere of the Bosporan state’s cultural influence. This information can be used in further reconstructions of the ethno-political situation in the Crimea in Roman times.

  • Elite, Wine Consumption and Status Symbols in Ancient Chorasmia
    • Authors: Michele Minardi
      First page: 262
Abstract: Source: Volume 22, Issue 2, pp 262 - 294This paper analyses two objects of Hellenistic taste related to wine consumption unearthed during the archaeological excavations of Akchakhan-kala in Ancient Chorasmia: a fragmentary ivory rhyton and a terracotta mould in the shape of a satyr’s head used to decorate ceramics. These items are only the latest evidence regarding wine consumption and selective reception of Hellenistic culture in 1st century BC-2nd century AD Ancient Chorasmia. Although these two finds show a remarkable Hellenistic influence, it is assured that in Chorasmia wine consumption and vine cultivation were already widespread in the 5th century BC when the local elite used precious vessels of Achaemenid style for their tables and when the lesser strata of the population imitated these toreutics specimens and related practices. Once again the “isolated” Chorasmia shows its remarkable tendency to select foreign artistic/artisanal elements for its crafts and to adopt/import alien status symbols for concepts shared by the elites of the Hellenised east.

  • On Post-Hellenistic Influence in South-East Asia
    • Authors: Sergey Lapteff
      First page: 295
Abstract: Source: Volume 22, Issue 2, pp 295 - 320For a long time South-East Asia was thought to be out of the reaches of the influence of Hellenistic and Post-Hellenistic cultures. However these notions need to be changed now, especially due to new findings in Thailand and Cambodia. Analyzing different types of archaeological objects (some types of beads, Greco-Roman cameos, Roman coins etc.) we come to the conclusion that continental South-East Asia experienced various kinds of influence from Post-Hellenistic cultures, which can be traced not only on the sea shores, but also in the inner regions of the Indochina Peninsula. The relationship of some objects to Central Asia, gives us grounds to suppose that, together with India, this region could be one of the inter-links between both cultures, though we suppose the sea route as the main way of the spread of Post-Hellenistic cultural influence to South-East Asia.
