  • Forward-Looking Information Disclosure and Corporate Governance: Empirical
Evidence from Year 2013 Listed Firms in Ghana (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Ben K. Agyei-Mensah
Abstract: Source: Page Count 29This study investigated the influence of corporate governance on the disclosure of forward looking information by firms listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange. The forward-looking information used in this study were obtained from statements made for management in either the Managing Director or Board Chairman’s reports regarding future operating outcomes. The results of the extent of disclosure of forward looking information, mean of 35%, indicate that most of the firms listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange did not disclose sufficient forward looking information in their annual reports. The low level (35%) of forward looking information disclosure will also make it very difficult for the firms’ stakeholders to determine future performance of the company. In a country where corruption, even within the judiciary, is high one way of hiding corrupt practices is to hide information from the users of the financial reports. The results of the regression analysis indicate that board ownership concentration is the significant variable that explain the level of forward looking information disclosure.

  • Towards a Framework for Understanding the Outcomes of Economic Engagements
with Africa: A Human Capital Development Perspective
    • Authors: Motolani Agbebi; Jari Stenvall Petri Virtanen
Abstract: Source: Page Count 26In the last few decades, the world has experienced significant economic and political transformation, which has led to adjustments in economic interaction between countries. However, this new pattern of economic engagement has not attracted adequate investigation from management researchers. This paper aims to fill this gap in the literature by advancing a conceptual framework that can guide researchers towards investigating new patterns of economic engagement across countries. Chinese economic engagement in Africa is used to exemplify how the conceptual framework can be used. The paper concludes by providing directions for research.

  • The Complexity of Contemporary Rural Society: Agricultural
‘Betterment’ and Social Realitiesin Semi-arid Zimbabwe
    • Authors: Vusilizwe Thebe
Abstract: Source: Page Count 19Modernist assumptions have guided rural development interventions in Zimbabwe since the mid-twentieth century. As a result interventions were not firmly grounded on rural socio-economic and physical realities. The aim was not only to create a society of ‘modern’, ‘progressive farmers’ who followed a predetermined agricultural path, but also, the quest for order and modernity was clearly manifest through centralization measures and increased emphasis on prudent land husbandry. This article seeks to demonstrate that these rural development initiatives were ill-suited to the socio-physical realities in some rural societies. Using a case study of a communal area in semi-arid north-western Zimbabwe, it stresses the importance of the physical conditions, the socio-economic dynamics and the particular livelihood trajectories of rural households. It concludes that, even if the state in Zimbabwe was to succeed in imposing an agrarian order driven by these models, such a policy was more likely to end in dismal failure.

  • The Effects of Greek Society and Culture on Ayvalık Architecture:
Architectural Typology and Vernacular Settlement (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Bedriye Asımgil
Abstract: Source: Page Count 29Ayvalık town is a traditional and urban formation that is of the outcome of centuries of optimization of material use, construction techniques and climate considerations, that the traces of the Greek architecture is seen. In this study, traditional building designs having various typology is evaluated. It is concerned with the layout of the buildings (orientation, climate, aspect ratio). This study is concerned with the layout of the buildings, such as building orientation, climate, aspect ratio, the proximity of houses (site planning), the air movement, the size-position of building openings, and the building facade (walls, construction materials, thickness, roof construction detailing). This paper evaluates specific vernacular dwelling types and their response to climate, based on passive design principles that could be adapted to current architectural practice in the area, in order to optimize the relationship between site, building and climate, in Ayvalık.

  • Preparedness and Economic Integration in Africa – A Case with
           Reference to (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Faisal Ahmed
Abstract: Source: Page Count 50The ideas of governance and African integration and the inter-linkages between them are consistently defining policy-making in Africa. This paper analyses the Lagos Plan of Action and makes an assessment of various sub-regional integration pursuits within Africa, which is integral to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). The paper also analyses the business environment and economic governance in African sub-regions by assessing their participation in international trade and investment flows, besides discussing the trade-related institutional frameworks in Africa. Moreover, the paper analyses few indigenous best practices in the areas of infrastructural development, trade facilitation, competition regime, and, agricultural development, among others and also reflects on the pertinent concerns. It calls for a broad-based multi-stakeholder participation to help enhance Africa’s preparedness and global outreach.

  • Coverage of The United States-Pakistan Relations in American Newspapers
           (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Saqib Riaz
Abstract: Source: Page Count 26The relations between the United States of America and Pakistan have a significant impact on the world’s politics as well as in shaping the future of the globe. However, the relations between the two countries have been passing through a lot of ups and downs during the last seven decades. Media have a pivotal role in framing and shaping this ‘love and hate’ relationship. The purpose of this study was to investigate the coverage of the United States-Pakistan relations by the American newspapers because the media coverage shapes the public opinion. Two major newspapers of the United States were content analyzed for a period of one year with the help of Lexis and Nexis and the coverage of Pakistan was measured and analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The results of the study revealed that the American newspapers portrayed a highly negative image of Pakistan and most of the coverage about the bilateral relations was found as negative.

  • The Essence
    • Authors: N. Oluwafemi Mimiko
Abstract: Source: Page Count 16The Yoruba, predominantly of southwest Nigeria, comes with a long history of deep cultural consciousness and identity defined by the omoluabi essence – a sense of, commitment to, and pride in pristine and honorable conduct, individually and corporately. This paper interrogates the different, yet intricately linked perspectives articulated in Encyclopedia of the Yoruba on the cosmology, culture, and sociology of the Yoruba; the impact of modernity on its being; and the basis of the resilience of much of its wider cultural forms in different spatial and temporal contexts. It notes that the basic outline of the Yoruba culture predates its contact with the West, and is indeed comparable to the best of the latter in significant respects. A more autochthonous existence for the Yoruba, predicated upon this uniquely profound and composite cultural essence, within the Nigerian federation, has limitless possibilities for social cohesion and advancement of the development agenda.

  • South Korea’s Aid to Africa and Compliance with International Norms
           (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Hyo-sook Kim
Abstract: Source: Page Count 23Previous literature on Korea’s official development assistance (ODA) has tended to focus on Korea’s national interest in providing ODA, in a way that is biased toward accepting the assumption of a realist paradigm and ignoring the aspect of international cooperation observed in Korea’s aid behavior. To fill this gap in the literature, I examine the impact of the poverty reduction norm in determining Korea’s aid behavior. I adopt qualitative research methods and examine two aspects of the impact of the norm of poverty reduction in Korea’s ODA: the incorporation of this norm into ODA policy and transformations in aid allocation to African countries. I also conduct an analysis at the level of the system and the unit to identify the factors that encourage Korea to sensitively respond to the poverty reduction norm. I argue that norm internalization has led Korea to increase aid to Africa.

  • Expatriates Go, Let Us Grow
    • Authors: Deepanjana Varshney
Abstract: Source: Page Count 31The employment situation in Saudi Arabia and the dynamics of the labor market are the results of a series of decisions to grow the economy fast after the discovery of oil. Since the locals were not equipped and prepared with the required knowledge and expertise, to build up the nascent economy at rapid speed during that phase, there was a massive inflow of expatriates. The current research highlights the changing labor market in Saudi Arabia, unemployment among locals, remedial policies framed by the government, their drawbacks, and effect on the overall economy. The key antecedents are the preference of Saudi youth for the Public sector, unemployment, the role of the Education System, the private sector, the Nitaqat (job localization) system and expatriate factor. Finally, I propose a viable human capital development model that suggests a collaborative role for expatriates and employability enhancement programs for sustainable economic and social development.

  • The Role of Media Usage on Building Social Capital: Multiculturalism in
           Korea Case (Advance Article)
    • Authors: Chang-Hyun Jin
Abstract: Source: Page Count 28The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the use of mass media by immigrant women in Korea and their capacity to form and build social capital, centering on their use of media such as; television, newspapers and the Internet. To achieve this research goal, the concept of social capital was reviewed and the relationship between trust, civic engagement and socio-political participation, which are components of social capital, were investigated. The study (n=335) measured the effects of consuming major media types on the formation of social capital within the sample population and identified the relationship between generic consumption patterns associated with individual media and the formation of social capital. In addition, this paper sheds light on the notion that a person’s socio-demographic background affects the formation and building of social capital and that trust and civic engagement affects socio-political participation.

  • Contested Foreignness: Indian Migrants and the Politics of Exclusion in
Early Colonial Zimbabwe, 1890 to 1923
    • Authors: Francis Musoni
Abstract: Source: Page Count 24The British South Africa Company’s conquest of Zimbabwe in the 1890s opened the country to settlement by immigrants from Europe, South Africa, India and other regions. Using their position as benefactors of the emerging colony, the British-born settlers deployed various notions of foreignness to marginalize the indigenous populations and other groups. Focusing on thirty-three years of company rule in Zimbabwe, this article examines how Indian immigrants contested the British attempts to foreignize them in the emerging colony. Rather than presenting Indian migrants as passive victims of discrimination and marginalization, the study emphasizes their creativity and determination to establish their own destiny, against all odds. It also shows that foreignness in colonial Zimbabwe was a key factor in the politics of power, identity formation and nation-state building. In that respect, the article explores the constructed-ness as well as the malleability of foreignness in processes of nation-state formation in Africa.
