  • Introduction - The Cavalry of the Clouds' New Research in the
Development and Experience of Air Power in the British Empire during the
           First World War

    • Authors: Ross Mahoney, Michael Molkentin
Abstract: In October 1917, the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, evocatively and memorably described Britain’s military aviators as ‘the cavalry of the clouds [...] the knighthood of this war’.1 In doing so, Lloyd George drew on a cultural motif that had been developing in Britain in the previous two decades. As aircraft became a practical reality, advocates of the new technology had influenced the public to see them as representative of a new epoch in human civilisation – the air age – and to perceive the aviators who flew them as ‘a special breed - that of the ultimate hero’.2 Ideas about aviation’s exceptionalism extended into the predictions and expectations that many had regarding its impact on future conflict. The most ardent adherents of the new religion of air-mindedness foresaw in the aircraft a decisive weapon: one that might even supplant the traditional arms of land and sea power in exercising a strategic influence in warfare.

  • Learning to Fly: The Royal Flying Corps and the Development of Air Power

    • Authors: David Jordan
Abstract: The history of Britain’s air services in the First World War has long been coloured by a fascination with fighter ‘aces’. Although scholarship over the last 20 years has challenged this perception, the work of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force is still often seen through the lens of air fighting. While the struggle for control of the air was of great importance, it arose from the need to ensure freedom of action for those supporting troops on the ground. This article examines how the support roles – reconnaissance, artillery observation and attack – developed within the RFC, and their interaction with the contest for air superiority. It highlights the growing importance of aircraft to British operations between 1914-1918, how air power was integrated into the land battle and the uneven way lessons were learned and implemented as the RFC and RAF developed into a highly effective force.

  • The Royal Naval Air Service and Anti-Submarine Warfare in the North Sea,
           1917 – 1918

    • Authors: Alexander Howlett
Abstract: This paper examines the role of the Royal Naval Air Service in the anti- submarine warfare and convoy protection campaigns of 1917-1918. During this crisis of the naval war, Britain’s naval aviators carried out coastal air patrols, directly bombed Germany’s submarine bases in Belgium, and flew aerial escort missions in support of merchant convoys. These operations are rarely considered in the literature on anti-submarine warfare, but form an integral component of the Royal Navy’s holistic approach to defeating Germany’s U-boats, and ultimately directly contributed to the allied victory in the First World War.

  • Bloody April Revisited: The Royal Flying Corps at the Battle of Arras,
           1917

    • Authors: Mike Bechthold
Abstract: The Battle of Arras, 1917 is generally considered a land battle where aircraft played minor roles in scouting and counter-battery work. Meanwhile, a parallel but separate air battle known as “Bloody April” was waged overhead where German pilots, enjoying significant technical and geographic advantages, inflicted very high losses on the British and French flying services. In reality, the ground and air battles were inextricably linked. The Royal Flying Corps under Major-General Hugh Trenchard made great strides towards the development of a modern air campaign. Local and distant bombing raids and air superiority missions made it possible for near continuous reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and contact patrol flights providing invaluable support to the ground forces. As a result, the RFC made a significant contribution to the outcome of the Battle of Arras though there were major problems with this nascent air campaign. Nevertheless, it was an integral step in the development of air power in the First World War.

  • The Dominion of the Air: the Imperial dimension of Britain’s war in
           the air, 1914-1918

    • Authors: Michael Molkentin
Abstract: It is now well established in the historical literature of the First World War that manpower and materiel, provided by the colonies and self-governing dominions, figured importantly in Britain’s war effort. One area, however, in which the war’s imperial dimension has yet to be properly analysed, is the air war – perhaps the very epitome of the ‘total war’ struggle that British society faced between 1914-18. This article evaluates the imperial contribution to Britain’s war in the air. Besides revealing the considerable extent of empire involvement in the British flying services, it demonstrates something of the distinct and nuanced relationships that colonial authorities had with London, and the way this shaped their respective involvement in the empire’s war effort.

  • ‘Say it with Music’: Combat, Courage and Identity in the Songs
           of the RFC/RAF, 1914-1918

    • Authors: Emma Hanna
Abstract: This article examines the role of songs and singing in maintaining morale and squadron identity in the Royal Flying Corps/RAF on the Western Front during the First World War. Using song books, published memoirs and officers’ personal papers from the Royal Air Force Museum and Imperial War Museum, the development and dissemination of the songs will be discussed in the context of RFC/RAF squadron culture. This analysis will show that music and songs had several key functions for men serving with the RFC/RAF; they helped to dissipate fear and anxiety, to maintain airmen’s morale and enhance the squadron’s esprit de corps.

  • The Nervous Flyer: Nerves, Flying and the First World War

    • Authors: Lynsey Shaw Cobden
Abstract: This is not an article about ‘shell-shock’. It explores the military medical response to nervous disorders in the Royal Flying Corps. The First World War exposed the propensity of pilots to the nervous and psychological rigours of aerial warfare, but their unique experiences have been overlooked in favour of ‘trauma’ in infantrymen. This represents a critical lacuna in the historiography of military medicine, for flying personnel were studied apart from ‘shell- shocked’ soldiers. This article will show that flyers were believed to be medically different, and what set them apart from men in the trenches was their unique employment. The war necessitated, and provided the conditions for, the study of the medical problems of flying, including the significant nervous strains. Medical officers quickly established that flying not only affected bodily functions, but also ‘wore down’ the nerves that regulated psychological responses. This article will therefore present the medical view. It will study the research of air-minded medical officers and the conclusions reached on the nervous disorders of flying personnel.

  • Trenchard’s Doctrine: Organisational Culture, the ‘Air Force spirit’
and the Foundation of the Royal Air Force in the Interwar Years

    • Authors: Ross Mahoney
Abstract: While the Royal Air Force was born in war, it was created in peace. In his 1919 memorandum on the Permanent Organization of the Royal Air Force, Air Marshal Sir Hugh Trenchard outlined his vision for the development of the Service. In this strategy, Trenchard developed the idea of generating an ‘Air Force spirit’ that provided the basis of the RAF’s development in the years after the First World War. The basis for this process was the creation of specific institutions and structures that helped generate a culture that allowed the RAF to establish itself as it dealt with challenges from its sister services. This article explores the character of that culture and ethos and in analysing the early years of the RAF through a cultural lens, suggests that Trenchard’s so-called ‘doctrine’ was focussed more on organisational developments rather than air power thinking as has often been suggested.
