  • The Tsar’s Two Bodies
    • Authors: Edward L. Keenan; Russell E. Martin
      First page: 3
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 3 - 28Originally delivered as a lecture at Columbia University in the fall of 1974, this classic text has circulated among Professor Edward L. Keenan’s students and colleagues for decades, but has never been published. The lecture draws upon the author’s textual work, including his then recently published book challenging the provenance of the Correspondence attributed to Tsar Ivan IV and Prince Andrei Kurbskii, to explore how his conclusions about this and other texts impinge on the received historiographical traditions about power, dynasty, and the life and reign of Ivan IV “the Terrible.” The lecture employs the model developed by Ernst Kantorowicz in his The King’s Two Bodies to understand the biographical details of Ivan IV, including the results of the autopsy of Ivan’s remains. The lecture provides an early, yet penetrating glimpse into the thinking of one of the most influential historians of Russia in the sixteenth century and of the reign of Ivan the Terrible.

  • Three “Hands” and Literacy in Muscovy during the Reign of
           Ivan
    • Authors: Charles J. Halperin
      First page: 29
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 29 - 63Some recent historians dissent from the widespread opinion that Muscovite society during the reign of Ivan IV was overwhelmingly illiterate. This article adduces three types of evidence that more optimistic assessments of the extent of literacy are nearer the truth. Analysis of the use of the terms “to know letters” and “to affix one’s hand” and explanations of why principals or witnesses to a legal transaction did not “affix their hands” demonstrate conclusively that they meant to be literate and write their signature on a document. Therefore, signatures prove practical literacy. Documents written by a non-scribe principal demonstrate an even higher level of literacy. The absence of documents handwritten by boyars reflects not boyar illiteracy, but boyar snobbism, facilitated in part by use of personal slave/servant “writers” to handwrite their charters. Literacy in Ivan’s Muscovy was more widespread among the elite than pessimistic assessments allow.

  • The Concept of the “New Soviet Man” and Its Short History
    • Authors: Maja Soboleva
      First page: 64
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 64 - 85The concept of the New Soviet Man remains a topic of on-going scholarly interest for a number of reasons: it reflects a vital part of Russian history, it remains associated with positive and negative connotations that still need to be explored, and it functions as a crossroads for different scholarly perspectives. It remains a topic of interest also because there are still a number of unexplored questions about the concept from the perspective of the history of ideas and philosophy. This article focuses on the reconstruction of the ethical concept of a New Soviet Man over time. It argues that there were three periods in the history of this concept: The first period – between the 1900s and 1930s – can be called the period of theoretical reflection on the nature of a New Man. The second period – from the 1930s to the 1950s – can be characterized as the period of the development of norms of Soviet morality. The third period – since the 1960s – is marked by the transition of ethical thought from the ideology propagating socialist morality to moral theory and Marxist scientific ethics. This article argues that the process of forming a new type of man was not a continuous and unilineal process of change throughout the entire period of socialism. On the contrary, this dramatic process can be successfully analyzed with the help of the ethical concept of the New Soviet Man.

  • Creating a Religious Community in Siberia
    • Authors: Isolde Thyrêt
      First page: 87
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 87 - 104This article explores how Nektarii, the third archbishop of Siberia and Tobolsk (1636–1640), contributed to the creation of a lasting Russian Orthodox community in his diocese by manipulating traditional Muscovite social rituals and the Russian Orthodox practice of venerating miracle-working icons. Challenging the traditional view that the conversion of Siberia was guided primarily by Muscovite imperial policy, Thyrêt instead focuses on local religious developments that were initiated by the Siberian hierarch in order to deal with obstreperous government officials and the unruly flock of his border diocese. The article shows how Nektarii creatively established his ecclesiastical authority in Tobolsk and laid the foundation for a community following a regulated Christian life in Siberia by connecting his arrival in Tobolsk with an impressive ceremonial entrance that was styled after royal welcoming rituals and by engineering the cult of the first Siberian miracle-working icon, the image of the Virgin of Abalak.

  • The Origins of the Old Belief in Viatka
    • Authors: Evgeny Grishin
      First page: 105
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 105 - 121This article examines three different narratives about the origins of the Old Belief in Viatka that represent parallel, rather than mutually exclusive, viewpoints. It scrutinizes the historical accounts of a local Old Believer community, the official documents originating from the Viatka civil and ecclesiastical authorities, and, finally, contemporary scholarly works. Without privileging any of the three views, the article demonstrates crucial disparities in their understanding of what the Old Belief/“Schism” was. It becomes evident that the categories of “Schism” and Old Belief employed in scholarly studies should be reassessed in the light of the historical contexts they emerged and evolved in.

  • The “Quaker Heresy” in Siberia
    • Authors: Eugene Clay
      First page: 122
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 122 - 136In the 1670s, from his underground prison in Pustozersk, the Old Believer leader Archpriest Avvakum, misled by Anglican propaganda, equated the “Quaker heresy” with bestiality. Decades later, the Russian sought to eradicate a religious movement that it mislabeled the “Quaker heresy” (better known as the khlysty or flagellants): two special commissions in 1733–1739 and 1745–1756 arrested, imprisoned, and exiled hundreds of peasants and townsmen who had participated in secret meetings, where they prayed, danced, prophesied, and spoke in tongues. Rather than destroy the movement, however, exile only encouraged the spread of the “heresy” into Russia’s eastern frontier. By 1760 the “heresy” had appeared in Viatka and Tobol’sk dioceses, where the Ukrainian metropolitans Varfolomei (Liubarskii) and Pavel (Koniuskevich) tried to eliminate it, without much success. Using printed and archival sources, this article examines the Siberian “Quakers” and the discourse surrounding them; the portrayal of the heresy in legal documents emerged from deep conflicts about the nature and role of Orthodoxy in the Russian empire. The so-called “Quakers” insisted on their Orthodox piety, while their accusers portrayed them as practitioners of a dangerous alien faith.

  • Orthodox Communities on Russia’s Frontiers
    • Authors: Matthew P. Romaniello
      First page: 137
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 137 - 141This essay is a brief comment on the preceding essays, highlighting two issues of significance raised by these authors. The first is whether the frontier itself influenced the evolution of Orthodox belief. Did distance create an opportunity to expand the faith? The second question considers the impact of the Russian Empire on its religious communities, and examines the way in which religion can reveal the tension between center and periphery. To address these issues, this comment adds a reflection on the conversion mission among the Muslim and animist communities in and around Kazan in the early modern period.

  • In Memoriam Edward Louis Keenan Jr.
    • Authors: Russell E. Martin
      First page: 143
Abstract: Source: Volume 51, Issue 1, pp 143 - 157On Friday, September 25, 2015, in Memorial Church at Harvard University, a memorial service was held to celebrate the life and career of Professor Edward L. Keenan Jr., Andrew W. Mellon Professor of History, Emeritus, who passed away on March 6, 2015. The memorial service gathered together hundreds – family members, former colleagues and students, and countless friends. The eight speakers at this memorial described Edward (Ned) Keenan’s influence on them, but also his inestimable impact on the field of Russian history; and his widow provided a window into his thinking about the many roles he played over the course of a diverse and significant career that spanned four decades. The memorial service marked a sad moment in the field of Russian studies, and the words offered at it are important for understanding how the field of Russian history in the United States grew and was transformed in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
